Corey Postpones; Cushing Romps

Ashburnham, Mass., Mon. Jan. 4 --

Lawrence Academy coach Charlie Corey delayed the Watkins
Tournament Championship game until 6 PM tonight. In
retrospect, he should have made the thirty minute drive from
Groton up route 119 to Ashburnham yesterday (the roads
weren't that bad), because the result could not have been any
worse. Cushing got a hat trick from Brad Nizwantowski and
two goals and two assists from Mike Woodford en route to an
8-3 drubbing of Corey's team this evening.

Final Tournament Stats

Tabor Takes Tabor Tournament

Marion, Mass. Sun. Jan 3 --

Tabor, behind goals from Tony O'Shaughnessy, Bob DeLong, and Scott McGrane, won its tournament this afternoon.

Josh Klimkiewicz scored for St. Seb's.

Both goalies had strong games. BC-bound Tim Kelleher, who on Saturday night led St. Sebastian's to a 3-1 win over the Junior Coyotes, today stopped 21 of 24 shots for the Arrows. Junior Artie Imbriano stopped 17 of 18 for the Seawolves.

Watkins Championship Postponed

Ashburnham, Mass. Sun. Jan. 3 --

The E.G. Watkins Tournament championship game has been postponed due to the weather. The game between Cushing and Lawrence has been rescheduled for Monday, January 4 at 6 PM.

Tournament Stats

Shattuck Outlasts Berkshire

Ashburnham, Mass. Sat. Jan. 2 --

Just when it appeared Berkshire would tie the game while on a two man advantage, Shattuck-St. Mary's A.J. Walker broke free and beat Berkshire netminder Trapper Clark to take a 5-3 lead with one minute remaining in the second period. Shattuck would go on to win 6-4, getting a goal each from Jeff Jurek, Max Bull, Tony Gill, Ryan Caldwell, and Brent Maclellan.

Gabe Gauthier, Todd Ballaban, Jeff Winchester, and Dave Dorman scored for the Berkshire Bears, who play Vermont Academy Sunday at 8 am.

Cushing Overpowers Kent

Ashburnham, Mass. Sat. Jan. 2 --

Cushing notched ten power play goals en route to a 11-0 thumping of Kent this evening.  The Penguins got two goals each from Yale Lewis, Ben Murphy, and Kurt Wright.  Brian Doherty, Brad Nizwantowski, Tony Mallozi, Dan Murphy, and Steve Whitney each added single goals for the victors.

Ryan MacNeil and Mike Boudreau shared the goaltending duties for Cushing, stopping all ten shots.

Cushing Gets Two Past McCullion

Ashburnham, Mass. Sat. Jan. 2 --

Berkshire #2 goaltender, senior Pat McCullion, kept his team in the game, but in the end it wasn't enough as Berkshire bowed 2-0 to a deeper Cushing squad.

McCullion faced 26 shots, stopping 24, many of which were quality chances. Cushing's Ryan MacNeil picked up the shutout on 10 saves.

Cushing's first goal, by Brian Teixiera, came at 4:18 of the first period. Assists went to Kurt Wright and Michael Woodford.

MacNeil came up big for Cushing in the second period with a tough two-pad save off talented Berkshire freshman Gabe Gauthier.

It looked like Teixiera had his second goal of the game midway though the third, but it was waved off, the referee ruling the puck hadn't crossed the line.

Hence it was still a 1-0 game when in the final minute when, with Berkshire about to pull McCullion in favor of the extra skater, Cushing's Ben Murphy, off a pass from Brad Nizwantowski, put the game on ice.

Cushing will meet Lawrence Academy in the championship game tomorrow at 2 pm. Northfield-Mt. Hermon will meet Shattuck in the 3rd place game at noon. At 10 am Kent will meet Gunnery. At 8 am Vermont and Berkshire face off.

Lang Lifts Seawolves into Final

Marion, Mass. Sat. Jan. 2 --

Sophomore Jeff Lang's goal with 49 seconds left in regulation gave Tabor a 4-3 win today -- and a berth in tomorrow's championship game.

Junior Paul Muniz and Junior Mike Weber also scored for Tabor. Junior Ryan Foley had a pair of assists.

Justin Fishman and Brett Mackey scored for GDA.

Goaltenders were Paul Morrissey (GDA), and Mark Taylor (Tabor). Save totals not available.

Coyotes Hammer Holderness, 6-1

Marion, Mass. Sat. Jan. 2 --

Jon DiSalvatore, Craig Cushing, and John Luszcz each had a goal and two assists as the New England Coyotes coasted to a 6-1 win today. Peter Zingoni, Michael Komisarek, and Eric Tkacz also scored for the Coyotes.

Jon Boyle scored Holderness' only goal of the game, an unassisted effort which put his team up 1-0 -- for a few minutes.

Goaltenders were Chris Frechette (Coyotes), and Jamie Arbeau (Holderness).

Sullivan's Pair Propels St. Seb's

Marion, Mass. Sat. Jan. 2 --

Junior John Sullivan of Newton, Mass. scored his second goal of the game at 11:07 of the third period to give St. Sebastian's a 4-3 win over the Hill School.

Junior Tim Coskren and senior Gil Schipani also scored for St. Sebastian's. David DePalma, Steve Calderera, and Zecheriah Klann tallied for Hill.

Tim Kelleher (St. Seb's) and Craig Schnappinger (Hill) were the goaltenders.

The Kids Are All Right

Ashburnham, Mass.  --

The rumour of Cushing's demise is false. Ben Murphy scored
two goals as the Penguins defeated highly-touted
Shattuck-St. Mary's, 5-4 , in opening night action at the E.G.
Watkins New Year's Tournament tonight in Ashburnham.
Brian Doherty, Jeremy Wilson, and Kurt Wright also scored
for Cushing.

O'Shaughnessy Bails Out Tabor

Marion, Mass. --

A Tony O'Shaugnessy goal with 2:25 left in regulation allowed Tabor to salvage a 3-3 tie with Noble & Greenough in opening night action at the Tabor New Year's Invitational.

In the first period, Tabor jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by junior Ryan Foley and senior Scott McGrane, but allowed Nobles back into the game when senior Justin Dziama scored at 14:53. At 8:23 of the second, Dziama struck again, knotting the score at 2-2. However, 31 seconds later, sophomore Ben McManama put Nobles up, 3-2, a lead it would hold until O'Shaugnessy struck with time winding down.

There was no scoring in overtime, and even though  the game went into the books as a tie, there was a shootout (for seeding purposes only). Tabor won that, 3-1, as Paul Muniz, Craig Falite, and Foley beat Scott Annan. At the other end, Tabor's Artie Imbriano held Nobles to a lone goal by, once again, Justin Dziama.

In Other Action at the Tabor Tournament...

Providence-bound RW Jon DiSalvatore had a goal and two assists to pace the New England Jr. Coyotes to a 5-1 win over The Hill tonight.

Peter Hanbury, Craig Cushing, Greg Raymer, and Ryan Morton also scored for the Coyotes. John Luszcz and Chris Seifert each had a pair of assists.

Hill's only goal, by Jeremiah Klann at 2:33 of the first period, gave his team a 1-0 lead which lasted for only... 25 seconds.

Craig Schnappinger was in goal for the HIll; Chris Frechette for the Coyotes.

***

St. Sebastian's got a goal early in the first from John Sullivan, early in the second from Tony Coskren, and early in the third from John Toffey to take a 3-0 lead that was quickly cut to 3-2 as Jon Boyle and Jason Rowe struck back for Holderness.  Gil Schipani put St. Seb's up, 4-2, before Holderness junior defenseman Trevor Dean cut it to   4-3. Late in the period, a pair of goals by sophomore Mike Morris -- the second an empty-netter -- put the game out of reach.

BC-bound Tim Kelleher was in net for St. Seb's, while Jamie Arbeau was in goal for Holderness.

***

Dartmouth-bound senior Mike Murray had two goals and two assists to pace Nobles to a 6-2 win over Governor Dummer this afternoon. Junior defenseman Alex Ficarelli also had two goals for Nobles, while Scott Darcy and Wally Siggins added single goals. Jake Clapton had three assists for the winners.

Jim Clair and Brian Hobbs scored for GDA.

The goalies were Mike Morrison for GDA, and Scott Annan for Nobles.

***

In the opening game of the Tabor Inviational, host Tabor easily handled St. Mark's, 6-2. After two, Tabor, with goals by Mike Weber (2), Ryan Foley, P.J. Przybylowicz, Ryan Lochhead, and Pat Kane, had a 6-0 lead.

St. Mark's made it mildly interesting with a pair of late third-period goals, by Josh Staples and freshman Brendan McGonigle.

Brian Baczewski had 22 saves for St. Mark's while Mark Taylor had eight for Tabor.

Games of Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998:

Deerfield Takes Flood-Marr -- Again

Dedham, Mass.  --

Midway through the first half, Deerfield blitzed Hotchkiss with three goals in a four-minute span. That, combined with the shutout goaltending of senior Mike Aroesty, gave Deerfield a 3-0 win here today and its second straight -- and third in four years -- Flood-Marr championship.

With 14:14 left in the first half, junior Chip Canner broke down the right side and unleased a slapshot from inside the face-off circle that tipped past the glove of Hotchkiss goaltender Eric Smith. With 10:54 remaining, big Deerfield winger Rob Fried  picked up a rebound at the side of the net and fired home a tough-angle shot that put Deerfield up, 2-0.  24 seconds later, Aaron Kim, who's been moved back to defense, fired a shot from the point that found net. And that was all she wrote.

Winger Tyler Kolarik assisted on all three goals.

Nobles Finds Consolation;
Milton Does Not

In the third-place game, Nobles topped Milton, 4-2. It was a 2-2 game at the half, as junior Mark Angeloni and freshman Rob Flynn scored for Milton, while Nobles got goals from senior Mike Murray and junior Chris Owen.

At the start of the second half, Nobles coach Tom Resor replaced starting goaltender Steve Belew with Scott Annan.

Shortly afterward, Jake Clapton notched the game winner, assisted by Kevin Lyons and Murray. An empty-net goal by Murray in the last minute sealed the win.

In the fifth-place game, Westminster topped Salisbury, 5-1.

In the seventh-place game, it was Andover 6-0 over Kimball Union.

Kim Named Tourney MVP

Dedham, Mass. Sun. Dec. 20 --

Deerfield's Aaron Kim, recently moved back to defense, was named MVP of the Flood-Marr after today's game.

The all-tournament team is as follows:

Deerfield: Kim, Bill Gilchrist, Tyler Kolarik, Trevor Byrne.

Hotchkiss: Brett Nowak, Adam Foote, Brent Robinson.

Nobles: John Cronin, Chris Owen, Mike Murray, Justin Dziama.

Milton: John Blanchard.

DeYoung Gives Choate De Championship

Geoff Chambers, who worked at the U.S. Hockey Report last year before returning to college, started his Christmas break by attending the Lawrenceville Tournament -- and filing this story

Lawrenceville, N.J. Sun. Dec. 20 ---

Defenseman Cameron DeYoung's goal with 5:12 remaining in the second period was all #3 Choate needed to defeat #1 Taft 1-0 in the final of the Lawrenceville Christmas Tournament this afternoon in New Jersey. The Pickering, Ontario native one- timed a hard low slap shot -- sophomore center  Steve Baldassarri had drawn the puck back off the face-off -- past Taft goaltender Mark Spadaccini.

Taft squandered several great opportunities to tie the game. The best came during two separate power plays in the last 3:49 of the third period. Taft's Denis Nam actually appeared to score the tying goal with 2:50 remaining, but the goal was disallowed on a high stick violation. Later, with Spadaccini off for the extra skater and only five seconds remaining, Jed Richard's tip-in attempt trickled just wide of the net.

Choate goaltender Dan Weinrieb finished with 26 saves. Spadaccini had 22 in the loss.

USHR's first star goes to Weinrieb, who made several big stops late in the game to preserve the victory. DeYoung wins second star honors for his game-winning tally. DeYoung is a talented defenseman. He skates beautifully and handles the puck with ease, but does he have the discipline and consistency necessary to star at the next level? Too often
he tries to make big checks which only take him out of the play. When he sticks to business, DeYoung has few peers on the ice in the preps. The third star goes to Taft's Nam. At one point the Yale-bound senior looked to be knocked out of the game on a big open-ice hit by Choate's Jeff Dwyer. He returned, though, and continued to work tirelessly for the tying goal. Nam and linemate Brad D'Arco never stop working and represent all of what is good in New England prep school hockey.

They don't pick an all-tournament team down here, but I have mine -- and here it is.

F-Sam Paolini, Choate
F-Christian Jensen, Taft
F-Paul Kelly, NMH
D-Evan Nielsen, Taft
D-Cameron DeYoung, Choate
G-Dan Weinrieb, Choate

MVP--Weinrieb.

Taft-Choate to Fight for Title Today

Lawrenceville, NJ,  Sun. Dec. 20 --

In Saturday night action at the Lawrenceville Tournament, Taft and Choate both won, paving the way for today's final between a pair of teams ranked #1 and #2 in the most-recent USHR Prep Poll.

In the 7 o'clock game, Taft forward Erick Dalton, a native of   Middlebury, Vermont, notched the deciding goal in a 5-4 win over Belmont Hill.

Taft sophomore Christian Jensen scored two goals in a strong performance. Defenseman Evan Nielsen also scored for Taft.

Chris Unger, Chris Casey, Tristan Lush, and John Clifford scored for Belmont Hill.

In the 9 o'clock game, Choate rolled over Northfield-Mt. Hermon, 6-1.

NMH got on the board first, going up 1-0 on an unassisted tally by senior Paul Kelly.

In the second period, Choate took over on goals by Craig Wadman, Cameron DeYoung, and Robbie Harvey.

In the third, Choate added three more, as Steve Baldassari, Chris Snizek, and Ben Krantz lit the lamp.

In addition to his goal, Craig Wadman had a pair of assists.

Choate outshot NMH, 31-16. Corey LaTulippe was in goal for the Hoggers, replaced in the final minutes by Ben Crapser. Dan Weinrieb was solid for Choate.

This afternoon? Well, Vegas has no line on the game, but we do, and here it is: Taft 4, Choate 2. Why? Taft is deeper, and more skilled.

Games of Saturday, Dec. 19:

DiSalvatore Scores with Eight Seconds Left; Coyotes Wear the Crown

Lawrence, Mass., Sat. Dec. 19 --

With eight seconds left in regulation  Coyotes winger Jon DiSalvatore poked a loose puck past Bo Christini to give his team a 2-1 win and the championship of the Lawrence Tournament.

Tony Voce scored Lawrence's lone goal off a nice rush. J.R. Zavisza scored the Coyotes' first goal.

Randy Hevey was in net for the Coyotes. Lawrence Academy's Christini made several big stops  to keep the game at 1-1 before DiSalvatore's winning goal.

DiSalvatore was named the tournament MVP.

Cushing Gives it Away

In the other game, Cushing Academy squandered a 3-0 lead,   giving up three third-period goals and settling for a 3-3 overtime tie against Culver Military Academy.

Mike Woodford, Brad Nizwantowski, and Brett Peterson scored for Cushing. Culver came back with goals by Blake Thompson, Josh Priewe, and Mike Smith.

Ryan Anderson was in net for Culver; Ryan McNeil for Cushing.

Thayer Takes Barber Tournament

Concord, Mass., Sat. Dec. 19 --

Lou Eyster broke a 1-1 tie with an unassisted second period goal, and Luke Smith put a stamp on it in the final minute with his second goal of the game, an empty-netter, as Thayer took the 1998 Barber Tournament Championship with a 3-1 win over St. Sebastian's this afternoon.

In the first period, Matt Burke scored St. Sebastian's lone goal of the day, putting his team up 1-0, though not for long.

Marr Shuts Out Tabor;
The Cup Stays in Avon

Avon, Conn., Sat. Dec. 19 --

Marr was named tournament MVP, allowing only 2 goals over three games.

Games of Friday, Dec. 18:

Vail's Natural Hat Trick

Lawrence, Mass., Fri. Dec. 18 --

The man of the hour tonight was Lawrence Academy senior forward Chris Vail,  who in the first period of his team's 5-2 win over Cushing netted a natural hat trick. He did it every which way, too -- the first came on the power play, the second one was shorthanded, and the third was even strength. Vail also added an assist for a four-point game. Tony Voce had a goal (on a 5-on-3) and added two assists for Lawrence. Brian Tudrick also scored for the winners.

Senior Jeremy Wilson scored both of  Cushing's goals. Bo Christini was in net for Lawrence; Ryan MacNeil for Cushing.

Coyotes Shut Down Culver

Craig Cushing, Michael Komisarek, and Gregg Johnson scored a goal apiece and Randy Hevey got the shutout as the New England Coyotes downed Culver Military Academy in Friday night's early game at the Lawrence-Groton Tournament.
