Lawrence 4, Thayer 3 (OT)

Greg Lauze roofed a shot off  a face-off with five seconds left in the
third period to tie the game and Tony Voce won it at 3:11 of the overtime
period with a short backhander to give Lawrence a dramatic 4-3 win over
Thayer. The overtime goal capped a great performance by Voce who finished
the day with a hat trick and an assist.  Thayer came out flying in the
first period, which led to Mike Mulligan converting a nice feed from Lou
Eyster to give Thayer the early 1-0 lead. Lawrence buzzed in the second
period, but Thayer's Tim Kane made many excellent saves to keep the score
1-0. Thayer upped their lead to 2-0 when Scott Selig ripped a slap shot
past Bo Christini right before the end of the second period. LA got on the
board early in the third period as Voce scored a power play goal early,
and Voce tied it with another power play goal with a little over five
minutes left in the game. The game appeared headed for overtime until
Steve Greeley made a great athletic play as he hit a rebound out of
mid-air to give Thayer the 3-2 lead with 2:01 left in the game. Lawrence
pulled its goalie as it enjoyed a power play to end the game. Voce won the
crucial face-off back to Lauze who walked in alone on Kane and buried a
shot in the upper left hand corner. The overtime saw fast and furious play
as both teams had quality scoring chances. Voce's goal was started on a
great play by Robbie Barker at the Thayer blue line to keep the puck in
the zone. The puck squirted out front where Voce knocked it by Kane with a
backhander. High school hockey does not get much more exciting than
today's game. Both teams put forth a great effort and it was a shame that
a team had to leave the rink on the short end of the score. The win helped
the Spartans clinch at least a tie for the title in the ISL Keller
Division.
