USHR 2000 New England Prep Player of the Year

Michael Woodford, RW, Cushing Academy

Junior

Westford, Mass.
Last season, Woodford won the USHR's Most Improved Player Award, This season, he went right through the roof, notching a 34-35-69 line to help lead Cushing to a 30-3 record. Woodford and his linemates, Brian Doherty and Ben Murphy, accounted for 44% of Cushing's goals.

Recently, Woodford made a verbal commitment to play for the University of Michigan in the fall of 2001.

USHR 2000 New England Prep Defenseman of the Year

Mick Mounsey, D, Avon Old Farms

Senior

Concord, NH
He may still be Tara Mounsey's baby brother, but on Sunday he made a big name for himself by leading Avon Old Farms to the 2000 Prep School championship -- and in his home state, no less. The culmination to Mounsey's senior season came when, early in OT, Mounsey faked a shot at the blue line, cooly stepped around his defender, and fired a low shot on net. When the puck deflected off a Deerfield player, it landed right on the stick of Avon forward Chris Higgins, who buried it, setting off a wild celebration.
Mounsey, a native son of New Hampshire, will be skating for UNH this fall.
Previous Winners
1998: Peter Metcalf, Cushing Academy
1999: Trevor Byrne, Deerfield Academy

USHR 2000 New England Prep Goaltender of the Year

Rick Massey, BB&N

Senior

Weymouth, Mass.
Every time we saw BB&N this year, it was the Rick Massey show. While the team in front of him struggled -- and that's putting it as nicely as possible -- Massey stole several wins for them and kept them in a bunch of other games they had no right being in. The game that might have encapsulated Massey's prep school career was a 1-0 overtime loss to Andover on Feb. 5. On that day in Cambridge, Massey was a wall, facing 40 shots and kicking them all out until, with four seconds remaining in overtime and his team killing a penalty, Andover finally got one by him for the 1-0 win. (By the way, his counterpart in the Andover net that afternoon, Theo Novak, picked up the win and the shutout - but only had to make seven saves!)
Previous Winners
1998: Dan Lombard, G, Belmont Hill
1999: Tim Kelleher, St. Sebastian's

The Donnie Richardson Award

Tim Graham, C, St. Paul's School

Junior

North Reading, Mass.
Graham, a gritty, 5'7" center who can either make the play or bury it at high speed, is the winner of this year's Donnie Richardson Award, named in honor of the former Canterbury forward (class of 1998).

The award honors hockey skill combined with tenacity and toughness, which Graham personified. The junior had a 29-32-61 scoring line this season (and seven short-handed goals).

2000 USHR New England Prep Most Improved Player

Ryan Shannon, C,  Taft

Junior

Darien, Conn.
Often a player who has "improved" has actually just taken advantage of an opportunity placed in front of him. All we know is that when we saw Taft last season, Shannon didn't get a lot of ice time. This year, in the first Taft game we saw (this was back in early December), Shannon was the best player on the ice, as he would be in many, many Taft games this year.
Shannon, a 5'8", 165 lb. right shot center, is smart, opportunistic, clever with the puck and has a nose for the net. He put himself on the map this season while helping lead Taft to a 20-1-3 record.

2000 USHR New England Prep Coach of the Year

John Gardner  Avon Old Farms
John Gardner is the answer to a good trivia question. At Avon in the mid-80's he coached, in baseball, Juan Nieves, who went on to throw a no-hitter in the major leagues as a member of the 1987 Milwaukee Brewers, and Brian Leetch, a sure-fire NHL future Hall of Famer. We just thought we'd throw that in, but it also shows that Gardner's been around the block a few times. It's no surprise, then, that he has a bag of tricks. Still, not many thought that this year's Avon team, the #4 seed in the West, had much of a chance facing undefeated Taft on the road in the prep quarterfinals. But, utilizing a masterful game plan, Avon shut down the offensively-gifted Rhinos. The 3-0 win filled the Winged Beavers with confidence, and when they got to Salem last weekend, they knocked off Lawrence, 2-0, and Deerfield, 3-2 in OT, to take all the marbles. Defense wins championships, and, as everyone who's coached kids knows, it can be a hard sell. When the season was on the line, Gardner clearly had the ears of his team.
