U.S. Junior Camp Roster Announced

Forty-two players -- 25 forwards, 13 defensemen, and four goaltenders -- have been invited to USA Hockey's World Junior Summer Showcase in Plymouth, Michigan July 29th-Aug. 5th.

There are seven returnees from last season's gold medal-winning U.S. National Junior Team: goaltenders Jake Oettinger and Joseph Woll; defensemen Adam Fox and Ryan Lindgren; and forwards Joey Anderson, Kieffer Bellows, and Patrick Harper.

Camp invitees include '98s (22), '99s (19) and one '00 (Oliver Wahlstrom).

By state, Minnesota is the biggest roster contributor, with 12 players. Michigan is sending nine, Missouri five, and Connecticut four. Two each are going from Mass., Florida, and Illinois. California, NY, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington are sending one apiece.

Road to College Rosters & Schedule

The 10th annual Road to College Showcase will take place the weekend of June 22-25 at Babson College.

The tournament, run by former Harvard goaltender Chuck Hughes and former BU defenseman and current Dexter coach Dan Donato, is a showcase for top non-committed players (primarily, but not exclusively from the East coast). In addition to three days of games, the tournament features numerous workshops designed to aid players in the finer points of the college recruiting and admissions process.

The tournament is limited to seniors/PGs, juniors, and select sophomores. As for birthdates, there are a few '97s, but the bulk of the players are '98s, '99s, '00s, and '01s.

Coaches this year are Darren Reaume, Sean McCann, Rob Gagnon, Matt Plante, Steve Palmer and Chris Dyment.

All six teams will practice Thursday night. Games begin on Friday. Here's the schedule:

Fri. June 24rd at 2:00 pm, 3:40 pm, and 5:20 pm
Sat. June 25th at 2:00 pm, 3:40 pm, and 5:20 pm
Sun. June 26th at 11:00 am, 12:40 pm, and 2:20 pm.

Players who are entering the tournament with DI attention include 6'4", 185 lb. '01 LD Xavier Henry, a 4th round OHL pick (Hamilton) who will be at St. Andrew's College this fall. Henry played for the Toronto Titans Minor Midget AAA last winter. Also getting a lot of recent interest is Selects Academy U16 forward Shane Pinto, an '00 from NYC.

Note:
Belmont Hill's 6'7" John Copeland, a '99 rising senior who is converting to defense, was injured last night, so his place on the Grey team's blue line will be taken by '97 RD JJ Layton (Middlesex Islanders).

Liberty Bell Games Rosters & Schedule

The ninth annual Liberty Bell Games will be held this weekend, June 2-4, at the Red Bank Armory Ice Complex in Red Bank, NJ.

The tournament, which we've been to a number of times, is run well, and features an invitation-only list of top '00s, '01s, and '02s from the Atlantic District as well as NYC/Long Island, Baltimore/Washington, and on down to the Southeastern District.

Ottawa Senators scout Lew Mongelluzzo has run the tournament from its inception.

If you haven't been before, the tournament's rink is a beauty,  a World War I era armory repurposed in 1998. With exposed brick, gleaming hardwood, and numerous windows bringing in natural light, it's one of our favorite arenas in the Northeast. The town is nice, too -- smallish (pop. 12,206) but with a downtown featuring plenty of good restaurants and shops, all within walking distance of the rink. The town sits on the south bank of the Navesink River, with Sandy Hook, a six-mile long barrier beach reaching like a finger into the Atlantic, just minutes away. The great Count Basie, who most people assume was from Kansas City, was actually born in Red Bank in 1904 and, just a couple blocks from the rink, there’s a beautifully renovated concert hall named after him. If you have time, poke around a bit.
