Tkachuk, Wilde Shine in Buffalo

Buffalo, NY -- In the sixth annual CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game at KeyBank Center, Team Leetch (Blue), on a Brady Tkachuk goal with 5:07 remaining, edged Team Chelios (White), 6-5.

The game wasn't as exciting as the final score suggests. While the pace was high -- and the talent likewise -- the game featured a lot of wide open up-and-down play, though with a pronounced lack of sustained pressure. There was only one penalty called -- in the entire game. No tong war here. Despite the abundance of high-end talent, it was still just a September exhibition game.

The first period started slowly, with poor puck management and a lack of physical play. Blue (Leetch) got things going on a goal by the NTDP's Jake Pivonka at 6:01. But Team Blue started turning over the puck a bit, giving the White team opportunities. Paul Cotter of the Lincoln Stars evened things up for White (Chelios) late in the period. The two teams combined for only 11 shots on the period, which was boring. Pivonka and Bode Wilde were the two standouts for us in the period.

In the second, there were more plays off the rush, though positioning was sloppy at times. Players took chances to create offense, which led to odd-man rushes the other way. While there was more goal scoring, at times it looked like a high-paced men's league game, with a number of stretch passes and guys hanging behind the play.

In the third, an additional four goals were scored, but there was a lot of weak defensive coverage, primarily bad turnovers in the slot. Both goaltenders got little to no help.

As for standouts, Brady Tkachuk, with the game-winning goal and an assist, was named player of the game. On D, Bode Wilde was our top guy.

Our Rankings:

Forwards:

1. Brady Tkachuk -- BU freshman simply has a terrific feel for the game. Plays a different style than his brother, Matt. More finesse. Better passer. Smooth skater. Excellent hands. High-end skill set. Good on the rush. Moves the puck quickly and smartly. Sets up teammates well. Did all of that -- and more -- here.

2. Jake Wise -- NTDP center and BU recruit was very crafty moving the puck. Worked well with Tkachuk. Set up a lot of offensive opportunities.

3. Joel Farabee -- BU recruit from upstate New York showed high skill with the puck. Excellent vision. Swift skater. Had the puck on a string and moved it well.

4. Ryan Savage -- Fargo forward and Miami recruit had two goals -- was the game's top finisher.

5. Oliver Wahlstrom -- Quick hands and a good release. He and Farabee were the two standouts on Team White (Chelios). That said, the NTDP forward did have stretches where he disappeared. A Harvard recruit.

6. Jake Pivonka -- Good release and good speed. Disappeared at times but was very strong early in the first, and also early in the third. Notre Dame recruit.

7. Jack Randl -- Michigan recruit had a goal and two assists, made plays consistently. Strong skater.

8. Jay O'Brien -- Good speed and also showed a willingness to get to the hard areas. Scored nice goal coming across the middle and sniping one over goalie's glove. Had some very good shifts, but not enough of them. Thayer center is a Providence recruit.

9. Jack Jensen -- Had a great shift in the third, picking up a pair of assists 54 seconds apart. Solid. Gopher recruit plays at Eden Prairie.

Defensemen:

1. Bode Wilde -- Top d-man in the game, maybe even the best player. Nifty hands. Good defensively. Strong. Good body position. Just very impressive. Recently committed to Michigan.

2. Quinn Hughes -- Michigan freshman is excellent with the puck on his stick. Great hands, feet, and vision. At 5'9", 168 lbs. he's definitely on the small side, but was very good battling along the boards. Makes up for his lack of size with his pace, his competitiveness, and his overall effectiveness.

3. Christian Krygier  -- Good stick. Made a great play to set up Tkachuk on the game-winning goal. Showed a really good feel for the game. Smart player. Made good decisions both with and without the puck. Knew where to be on the ice -- and where to go -- both offensively and defensively. Plays for Lincoln (USHL) and is committed to Wisconsin.

4. Mattias Samuelsson -- Big and strong -- at 6'4", 217 lbs. an obvious NHL prospect. Good defensively, strong body position. Good stick. Jumped up into the play at times, but overall keeps it simple. Michigan recruit.

5. K'Andre Miller -- Excellent offensively. Not so good defensively -- a little reckless in own end. A bit of work in progress there. 6'3", 206 lbs. and plays a physical game.

6. Alec Regula -- A good PP d-man. Is confident with the puck on his stick, and is willing to hold onto it, sometimes too long. Turned it over for Team Leetch's second goal. Needs to improve play without the puck.

7. Jordan Harris -- Kimball Union senior settled in during the second, when he began using his feet, which are quick. Made good decisions in moving the puck. Picked up an assist on an end-to-end rush and fired a backhand off the far pad to create a rebound. Liked him more the deeper the game went.

Goalies:

Team Chelios (White) -- Michigan State recruit Drew DeRidder (13/11) wasn't tested much in his half. Ben Kraws, a Miami recruit, kicked out 15 of 19 shots and was hung out to dry a few times. However, he showed mental toughness battling through a tough start and lack of defensive coverage most of the night. Never seemed to get rattled. Just made the next save.

Team Leetch (Blue) -- The NTDP's Jonathan Mor (12/10), who is uncommitted, made some excellent saves, though he didn't see  a lot of action. As for Jake Kucharski, the Providence recruit kept his team in the game, kicking out 14 of 17 and giving them a chance to win it on Tkachuk's GWG.

Box Score:

DeSantis, who was a standout at Select 15s, has visited several schools. Quinnipiac has offered him.

The U16 team is loaded. The top returning scorer from last year's U15 team, Will Margel (uncommitted) is back. Other top forwards include F Josh Lawrence, a BU recruit; and forwards PJ Fletcher and Ethan Phillips, both Quinnipiac recruits. And let's not forget RD Ruben Rafkin, a Denver recruit.

The Unnamed Tournament

How refreshing: no classic this, no showcase that. Just a bunch of games played over three days at four different college campuses: St. Anselm and Holy Cross (Fri. Sept. 9), Northeastern (Sat. Sept. 9), and UNH (Sun. Sept. 10).

Four teams from the tuition-free National Collegiate Development League (NCDC) teams will be taking part: the Islanders Hockey Club, South Shore Kings, Junior Bruins, and Northern Cyclones. In addition, there will be a few Premier League teams on hand, as well as the U18 teams from the Cape Cod Whalers and the Little Bruins.

All games are exhibition games and will be played as two 25-minute halves.

Schedule

Update:

The schedule for Sunday Sept. 10 at UNH has been revised, as the midget teams -- the Cape Cod Whalers U18s and Little Bruins U18s -- will not be playing the junior teams. To be precise, the Little Bruins and Whalers U18s will not be playing anyone on Sunday. Nor will the Bruins NCDC Split Season team and the NH Monarchs Premier team.

Instead of the originally scheduled six games, there will now be four games, starting at 10:00 am. All are exhibitions, with 25-minutes halves.

Here's the new schedule:

10:00 am -- Islanders Hockey Club Premier vs. Bruins Premier
12:00 pm -- Islanders Hockey Club NCDC vs. South Shore Kings NCDC
2:00 pm -- Bruins NCDC Black vs. Northern Cyclones NCDC
4:00 pm -- Bruins NCDC Gold vs. NH Monarchs
