42 Selected for U.S. World Junior Showcase

USA Hockey has released its initial roster for the 2018 World Junior Summer Showcase, a week-long event running from July 28th to August 4th in Kamloops, B.C. The showcase will feature Canada, Finland, Sweden and the United States taking part in 11 games.

Of the 42 players, there are six returnees from the squad that won bronze at the 2018 WJC in Buffalo, NY: forwards Josh Norris, Ryan Poehling, and Brady Tkachuk; and defensemen Mikey Anderson, Quinn Hughes, and Dylan Samberg.

Twelve states will be represented at the camp: Michigan (10), Minnesota (8), Massachusetts (6), Illinois (4), Florida (3), New Jersey (3), Connecticut (2), New York (2), California (1), Missouri (1), Ohio (1), and Pennsylvania (1).

John Vanbiesbrouck is the U.S. general manager. The head coach is Mike Hastings. He will be assisted by David Lassonde, Steve Miller and Scott Sandelin. Guest coaches at camp will be Chris Clark and Pat Mikesch.

The 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship runs from Dec. 26 through Jan. 5 in Vancouver and Victoria, BC.

57 Former Prep Players in NHL in '17-18

At Christmas, we made a list of former prep players who had appeared in one or more NHL games in the 2017-18 season.

There were 48 former prep players on that list, which was restricted to NEPSIHA schools and NEPSIHA affiliates. But, over the remainder of the season, it grew to 57 as nine players, each of whom is denoted below with an asterisk, joined the ranks.

Thirteen of the former players were first round NHL draft picks. Twelve were undrafted.

If a player's school and date are in parentheses, that indicates the player left prep school at that time, generally for the NTDP, USHL, Major Junior, etc.

Prep players in NHL, by round:

Round 1: 13
Round 2:  6
Round 3:  8
Round 4:  7
Round 5:  6
Round 6:  3
Round 7:  3
Undrafted: 12

Cushing, with five former players in the NHL, is the most-represented school, followed by Deerfield, Belmont Hill, Nobles, Thayer, Salisbury, all with four. St. Sebastian's, Andover, Avon, and Tabor each have three. And there are a dozen other schools that sent either one or two.

So, as the NHL draft gets underway tonight in Dallas, keep in mind that there are almost as many former prep players who were undrafted as there are first round picks. And, we should point out, all of those undrafted former players graduated from prep school and went on to college where, if I'm not mistaken, completed four years.
