A New #1 in USHR Prep Poll
The Gunnery, which edged previous #1 Kent 2-1 last Monday, has taken over the top spot in this week's USHR Prep Poll.

To be honest, though, this is more of a #1 and #1-A scenario. Each team has beaten the other once. However, Gunnery's win came more recently - and that's really about all that separates these two teams. Even subjectively, it's hard to say which team is better, mainly because they play such wildly divergent styles. Kent is a big, strong, grinding, highly-defensive team. Gunnery has a fleet of quick forwards. They can put up fearsome numbers against pretty much everyone except... Kent. Both teams are getting excellent goaltending.

Nobles and Belmont Hill are nipping at their heels - neither team has lost a game since the Christmas Tournaments.

And the last two times we saw Avon - against Kent on Jan. 16 and vs. Choate on Sat. - they've looked like the best team in prep hockey. Quick, aggressive, hard-working. The Winged Beavers need to keep playing like that to wipe away the damage of December, when they hosted their annual Xmas Tournament and laid an inexplicable egg.

Here's a team to watch this week: Dexter. They are 16-0-0 and host Pomfret (Wed.) and hit the road to Andover (Sat.). The following Saturday, Feb. 13, they face Tabor. If they win all three, things could become very interesting indeed.

Other teams not in the Top 10, but bubbling under, are Salisbury, Berkshire, and NMH.

USHR Prep Poll: Week of Feb. 1, 2010

Sat. Jan. 30 Highlights
Kent 2 @ Westminster 0 - Recent Brown recruit Marco De Filippo stopped all 33 shots he faced for the shutout. Kent got the first of its two goals from Matt McDonald, who walked in off the right half wall and roofed one on Westy's Patrick Spano for an unassisted goal with two minutes left in the second. Early in the third, Noel Acciari, off the draw, pushed it to Drew Brown, who snapped one home from the slot. #6-ranked Westy outshot #1-ranked Kent 33-28 but, despite the shot totals, there were very few good scoring opportunities in this game - for either team. However, Kent did a good job recognizing chances when they arose, making quality shots that resulted in a couple of goals.

@ Avon Old Farms 4, Choate 1 -- #10-ranked Avon Old Farms outworked and outhustled #3 Choate from the opening faceoff, and Morgan Mullen put the Winged Beavers on the scoreboard a little over a minute into the game. Having set the tone, Avon added two more - from Quinn Smith and KJ Tiefenwerth -- before the end of the first. Connor Doyle added a goal midway through the second to make it 4-0. Choate began to pull together midway through the second, and got an Alex Hagen goal to make it 4-1. But the Wild Boars could get no closer.  Josh Dionne had another strong performance in the Avon net, kicking out 35 of 36. Avon is undefeated in their last seven games.

@ Cushing 1, Exeter 1 - A goaltenders' duel between Chad Hardy (38/39) and Max Fenkell (26/27) produced no winner.

@ Deerfield 5, Hotchkiss 3 - A resurgent Deerfield squad got goals from five different scorers. In net, Connor Riley kicked out 30 of 33 shots, besting Jay Williams (24/29).

@ Salisbury 4, Berkshire 1 - Max Edson broke up a 1-1 tie with a pair of goals 38 seconds apart early in the third period. Gabe Antoni had 29 saves on 30 shots.

Belmont Hill 6 @ Berwick 1 -Mike McNamara (1g,2a), Devin Albert (2g), John Caldwell (1g,1a) and Nick Tierney (2a) paced the offense for #5-ranked Belmont Hill. Derek Metcalfe kicked out 22 of 23 shots for the win.

@ Delbarton 10, Fairfield Prep 2 - Yale recruit Kenny Agostino (5g) and Princeton recruit Michael Ambrosia (2g,4a) led Delbarton, now 15-0-0 on the season.

Holderness 7 @ New Hampton 6 - This game was actually 3-2 going into the third, whereupon each team scored four goals. Eric Rochefort (2g,1a) was the big gun for Holderness. And John Humphrey (2g,2a) had a big day for New Hampton.

St. Paul's 6 @ Lawrence 2 - Jonathan Liau had three goals (the last was an empty-netter) for St. Paul's. Derick Roy was strong in goal, stopping 35 of 37.

Andover 4 @ Loomis 1 - Eric Yoon kicked out 26 of 27 shots, Garnet Hathaway had a pair of assists, and goals came from four different scorers.

Milton 4 @ Thayer 0 - Sean Dougherty had a 25-save shutout for the Mustangs.

@ Taft 3, Trinity-Pawling 1 - Michael Petchonka stopped 13 of 14 shots, and the Rhinos got goals from three different scorers.

@ Dexter 3, Brooks 1 - Dexter got goals from three different scorers, outshot Brooks 54-11, and improved to 17-0-0. Brooks goaltender Tyler Stillings stopped 51 shots for the hard-luck loss.

Hebron 6 @ Brewster 4 - Drake Hart (2g), Nate Dupere (1g,1a), and Andrew Bettencourt (1g,1a) each had two points for the Lumberjacks. Brewster's Yegor Bezuglyy had a hat trick.

Rivers 7 @ Middlesex 6 (OT) - A Tom Manna goal at 2:29 of OT lifted Rivers to a 7-6 win at Middlesex. Mike Whouley and Connor Dempsey each had two goals for Rivers. Joe Pascucci had a pair for Middlesex.

@ BB&N 6, Worcester Academy 2 - Eric Danilchuk had a pair of goals for BB&N.

@ Williston-Northampton 7, Albany Academy 3 - Garrett Lessard (3g) and P.J. McCadden (1g,2a) led the Williston scorers.

Playoff Race Taking Shape

The 2009 - 10 prep season is moving along quickly, with many NEPSIHA teams having passed the 15-game minimum, and many more soon to do so.  With that in mind, we feel it is time to publish the RPI standings to give teams a chance to get a rough idea as to where they stand in terms of making the playoffs. First, though, a few notes:

As not all of the teams have reached the 15-game mark, the data is still volatile, meaning the possibility of change is high, and making this a very early look into the possible playoff teams. Data is based on games submitted to USHR and is current through Saturday's games.

The RPI represents the largest single component of the playoff formula, and changes with each NEPSIHA game played. The top eight teams in the RPI will not necessarily be the eight teams in the top tier of the NEPSIHA Championship Tournament. As you may know, the RPI is just one part of the playoff  formula.  That said, it's quite useful for gaining a feel for where teams stand. The statistical sample is plenty large enough for that.

Right now, we're going to concentrate on the top 16 teams, as measured by RPI. Those 16 teams include two former Div. II teams - Dexter and Berwick.

The mathematics suggests a top tier that looks like this:

1. Kent
2. Nobles, Gunnery, Cushing
3. Westminster, Choate, Dexter, Belmont Hill, KUA, Milton

We will be fairly surprised if any of these ten teams don't wind up finishing in the top 16, and be a team under consideration for the top tournament.

Concerning Dexter:  Dexter is currently seventh in the RPI and they have not lost or tied a game all season.  However, they are one of only seven teams whose opponents' average winning percentage is below .400. As of now, their opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (which accounts for 54% of RPI) is last among teams under consideration and ranks 49th in NEPSIHA. The fact that they are in the top eight puts them in an advantage position in the second part of the overall playoff formula, but in order to assure a playoff berth Dexter must maintain perfection (or something very close to it).  Their three games in February against Andover, Pomfret, and Tabor are must-win games if Dan Donato's boys hope to make the top tournament. When determining Dexter's strength through comparing mutual opponents, these three games will factor heavily.

The difference between teams in 16th and 17th place is a mere .008021.

These numbers are very fluid.  Naturally, each game between two NEPSIHA teams affects the standings in many ways, so each game matters.

For a detailed explanation of how the new playoff system works, please refer to the USHR News of 11/1/09.

Current RPI Leaders:

1. Kent, 2. Nobles, 3. Gunnery, 4. Cushing, 5. Westminster, 6. Choate, 7. Dexter, 8. Belmont Hill, 9. KUA, 10. Milton, 11. Berkshire, 12. Berwick, 13. Avon, 14. NMH, 15. Salisbury, 16. Andover, 17. Brewster, 18. Exeter, 19. Tabor, 20. Hotchkiss, 21. Proctor, 22. Taft, 23. Pomfret, 24. Deerfield, 25. St. George's, 26. Hoosac, 27. Canterbury, 28. St. Paul's, 29. South Kent, 30. BB&N, 31. Brunswick, 32. St. Sebastian's, 33. Lawrence, 34. Tilton, 35. Governor's, 36. Middlesex, 37. New Hampton, 38. Groton, 39. Hebron, 40. Vermont Academy, 41. Winchendon, 42. Williston, 43. Kents Hill, 44. Holderness, 45. Loomis, 46. T-P, 47. Millbrook, 48. Thayer, 49. Rivers, 50. Brooks.

Kent Holds Onto Top Spot in USHR Poll
Once again, Kent is the #1 team in the weekly USHR Prep Poll.

Two teams have gotten the heave-ho since last week: Salisbury, which fell to 7-5-2 after losses to Choate and Kent sandwiched around a win over T-P. And Berkshire, which beat Hotchkiss, but then lost to Choate and Avon. They're still a very respectable 12-6-0, but haven't yet found consistency.

Check out the poll and see which are the two new teams.

Kent Remains #1 in USHR Prep Poll
The Kent School, despite losing their first of the year yesterday at Avon Old Farms, remains at the top of this week's USHR Prep Poll.

Only one team was bounced out this week: Andover.

USHR Prep Poll: Week of Jan. 18, 2009

Sat. Jan. 16 Highlights
-- Avon Hands #1 Kent Their First Loss

Avon, Conn. - Unranked Avon outhustled and outplayed previously undefeated Kent, skating off with a convincing 4-1 win here today in a performance that suggested there just might be one more player in the Founders' League race before all is said and done.

The pace to this game was fast, making it one of the better prep games we've seen this year. And it was Avon, which has excellent team speed, that dictated the tempo from start to finish.

Avon went up early, as senior Kevin Tiefenwerth snapped one from the slot at the 9:39 mark, beating Kent senior goaltender Matt Madrazo low stick side. Kent, however, came back several minutes later on the power play, with junior Drew Brown taking a nice pass from senior Dave Dupuis, and, from the corner of the crease, sweeping it past Avon goaltender Josh Dionne to tie the game at 1-1.

In the second, Avon took a 2-1 lead when junior forward George Welles, forechecking aggressively, stripped the puck from Kent defenseman Mark Higgins and tucked it past a surprised Madrazo at the 8:27 mark.

Avon went up 3-1 on a 5x3 power play when senior Quinn Smith converted a nice pass in the low slot from Colin Sullivan at 11:53 mark.

With the two-goal lead, Avon increased the pressure, and there was great up-and-down action for the remainder of the second. In the final couple of minutes, Avon was swarming all over Kent.

In the third, Avon didn't sit back. They took away space from Kent, using their speed to jump on guys as soon as they touched the puck, giving Kent no time to set up and get much in the way of quality shots.

Quinn Smith added his second goal of the day, an empty-netter, with 49 seconds remaining. For the record, the Tiefenwerth-Smith-Mike Pereira line figured in three of Avon's four goals. It may have been the best game we've seen Tiefenwerth play in his Avon career. Sophomore defenseman Colin Sullivan had a couple of assists for the Winged Beavers. Senior right shot defenseman Patrick MacGregor had a strong game throughout. And Dionne made the saves he had to make. Avon outshot Kent 34-24.

Afterwards, Kent coach Matt Herr said, "I thought it was a good hockey game. Big hits. Nice goals. It was a good game between two very good teams. We're a team that maybe needed something like this to keep our edge. I hope our guys take something from this game and regroup. Avon played very well, just great defensive hockey."

Avon head coach John Gardner said, "I thought we played well defensively. We didn't give up a lot of odd-man rushes. In the third period, we really limited their scoring opportunities. I think they only had six shots all period. I also thought we effectively used our speed to draw penalties. The word is that we're fast but soft. I think if they buy into the defensive end of things, they'll see good things happen. Hopefully, we can build on this win and realize what the recipe for winning hockey is."

Avon and Kent do not meet again in the regular season. They previously met on Dec. 18, in the Avon Christmas Classic. Kent won that one, 3-1.

Wed. Jan. 13 Highlights

@ Westminster 2, Taft 0 --  Patrick Spano kicked out all 25 shots he faced in leading #3-ranked Westminster to a 2-0 shutout of Taft. Ryan Tyson put Westy up 1-0 on a first period power play goal, walking out of the corner and roofing one on Henri Pitkanen at 10:43 of the first. In the second a shot from the left point by Alex Pascal deflected in off a Taft defender to make it 2-0. Taft, which had defeated Salisbury 4-1 on Monday, was flat today and totally unable to take advantage of a five-minute power play in the second (Westy centerman Daniel Hnatko will be missing his team's next game due to a hit from behind) and nearly two full minutes of a 5-on-3 to start the third. "That's about as bad a game as we can play," Taft head coach Dan Murphy said afterward. Westminster head coach Tim Joncas was happy with his team's effort. "I thought it was at a high level," he said. "It had to be vs. Taft."

Undefeated Kent #1 in USHR Prep Poll
The Kent School, undefeated at 10-0-0, is again #1 in the USHR Prep Poll.

Bounced out this week: Cushing and Exeter.

Taking up residence: Belmont Hill and Nobles.

On the outside looking in: Berkshire.

There are a couple Monday games to keep an eye on:

Salisbury at Taft (4:15 pm). This might be a good day for Taft to make a statement. With guys like Corbin McGuire, Sean McGovern, Aidan Cavallini et al the Rhinos have some offensive flair.

Gunnery at Hotchkiss (4:45 pm). It takes great goaltending to stop Gunnery's waterbugs. This could be a good test for Hotchkiss's Jay Williams.

USHR Prep Poll: Week of Jan. 11, 2010

Hagen Hat Trick Leads Choate
Allston, Mass. - Choate junior RW Alex Hagen notched a hat trick in leading Choate to a 5-2 win over Exeter in a game played at Harvard's Bright Hockey Center this afternoon.

The win capped a successful two-game road trip for Choate, winners at Andover Saturday, and Hagen, who had a six-point weekend. For Exeter, it was their third straight loss.

Both teams came out flat, but Choate picked it up halfway through the period, and shortly thereafter Hagen poked home the rebound of a Mike Doyle point shot to put the Wild Boars on the board. Choate added two more in the second, the first when junior Kyle Criscuolo used his speed to cut across the slot and drop a pass for Hagen, who beat Exeter's Max Fenkell top corner with a shot from the left faceoff circle. Choate went up 3-0 when Criscuolo finished off a nifty passing sequence with linemates Adam Patel and Hagen.

In the third, with Choate's Doyle off for boarding at the 7:49 mark, Exeter went on the power play. Exeter head coach Dana Barbin pulling Fenkell to make it a 5x3. And it took all of seven seconds to work, as Brian Saling tipped home a Brendan Cosgrove shot from the left point to cut the lead to 3-1.

However, Choate got it back less than two minutes later when Ben Foster found Will Laverack alone in the slot, and Laverack beat Fenkell with a low shot to make it 4-1.

Exeter senior Josh Richards beat Choate goaltender Nick BonDurant with a high wrister from the left faceoff circle with 3:56 left to cut it to 4-2. That was as close as Exeter would get.

Hagen almost had his hat trick when he hit the cross bar with 1:44 left. No matter, though, for less than twelve seconds later, Criscuolo had the puck behind the net and hit Hagen, flying down the slot, with a perfect pass. Hagen fired it past Fenkell for his hat trick and the goal that made it 5-2.

"We came up here and we played two very good teams and came out of it with two W's," said Choate head coach Patrick Dennehy. "Our strength is our speed and we played with poise. The Hagen-Patel-Criscuolo line was terrific."

Exeter head coach Dana Barbin wasn't letting the three-game losing streak get him down.  "I have a good group of guys," he said. "Even after this tough weekend they'll show up for the next game. Pat has a good group over there. I thought they were hungry and really had a passion to finish off plays. When they had the chances they buried the sucker."

Note:

Speedy Choate forward Dan Linell is out with mono, but could be back next weekend.

Belmont Hill Stages Furious
Fenway Comeback

Fenway Park, Boston -- Belmont Hill scored four goals in exactly six minutes -- the capper being John Caldwell's goal nine seconds into overtime -- to finish off a wild come-from-behind effort, skating off with a 6-5 overtime win in the first-ever official prep hockey game at Fenway Park.

The game-tying goal was equally dramatic, as it came with the goalie pulled and five seconds left in regulation. There was a scramble in front, a couple players took whacks at the puck, but Belmont Hill's Mike McNamara, who also scored in the first period, got wood on it, and knocked it past St. Seb's goaltender Don McGuirl.

Earlier, things were looking very good for St. Seb's, as they had, with the help of a couple goals from junior D Desmond Bergin, built a 5-2 lead by the time the game's only ice cut was made at precisely 9:15 pm. (There was a minute or two left in the second period at the time.)

And the Arrows, despite Bel Hill picking it up in the third, held that three-goal lead until 5:51 remained in regulation, when Brandon McNally scored to make it a 5-3 game. The goal seemed to give Belmont Hill life.

Just 1:15 later, with the Arrows' Mike Ewing in the box, Brendan Fadden scored his second goal of the game to cut the lead to 5-4.

Then, as we mentioned, Mike McNamara tied it at 5-5 with five seconds left, and Caldwell, nine seconds into OT put it into the books as a W. On the game-winner, Caldwell, a defenseman who has been converted to center for his senior season, pushed the puck forward off the opening faceoff, got a shot off, and then knocked home his own rebound.

This was an exhilirating win for Belmont Hill, and an extremely tough loss for the Arrows, who, with the help of a couple of dumb penalties, really handed this game to Belmont Hill, a classic snatching-defeat-from-the-jaws-of-victory scenario.

Note:

For Belmont Hill fans, this was certainly the hockey team's greatest comeback since the NEPSIHA association quarterfinals on Feb. 27, 2008, when Exeter took a 3-0 lead into the third period, but host Belmont Hill, like tonight, came up with three in the third to send it into OT where, in the third OT, Sam Choate finally won it for Bel Hill. The goalies in that one were Ryan Purdy for Exeter, and Mike Condon for Belmont Hill.

Tonight's game was disorienting due to the fact that there was no game clock visibile to the crowd, or even the coaches and players. The referee would at times update the coaches and players on how much time was left, but the fans had no such luck. So the dramatic nature of the final six minutes of regulation only became fully apparent after the fact.

Given the distance the 3,000 fans in attendance were from the sheet -- all were in the grandstand, from the near side of the visitor's dugout to the near side of the Red Sox dugout -- it was extremely difficult to read the Belmont Hill numbers, which are dark red on a dark blue background.

The weather was excellent for a night game outdoors, with temps holding at around 30 due to the cloud cover. There was a moderate breeze. The ice was good. And, of course, the field was entirely snow-covered.
