Sat. Nov. 24 Jamboree Results
Belmont Hill Jamboree
@ Belmont, Mass.
Sat. November 24, 2012

Note: All below games are scrimmages.

8:30 am -- Belmont Hill 3, Winchendon 1 -- Senior Mike Najjar, junior Dan Seibel, and senior Dan Doherty (off a nice pass from Najjar) scored Belmont Hill’s goals and junior Ryan McConnell picked up the win in net. Winchendon’s goal was scored by Mike Busconi.

10:00 am -- Governor's Academy 3, Proctor Academy 1 -- Governor’s got goals from senior defenseman Geoff Sullivan, senior Cam Laughlin (off a nice pass from Colton Lafata), and junior Teddy Zimmerman (a rebound goal). For Proctor, junior Stefan Malmlund scored from a scrum in front. Gov’s incumbent goalie, Brendan McMenimen played two periods, allowing one goal. Freshman Liam Moore played the third, allowing no goals. Harvard recruit Merrick Madsen, a senior, took the loss for Proctor.

12:00 pm -- St. Andrew's College 5, Winchendon 0 -- SAC got a pair of goals from senior forward Jay Mackie; and single goals from senior D Brandon Cercone, junior forward Warren Foegele, and senior forward Burke White. Junior Brett Nichol had the shutout, stopping all 20 shots he faced.

1:30 pm -- Belmont Hill 3, Proctor Academy 1 -- Belmont Hill goals were scored by senior Tim Leary (from junior Matt Melanson), junior Will Golonka, on a breakaway, and senior center Carl Hesler, from Najjar. Junior Riley Whitham got the win in goal. Proctor’s goal was scored by senior defenseman Connor Simon, on a deflected shot. Sophomore Beau Collins was in net for Proctor.

3:30 pm – Governor’s 4, St. Andrew's College 4 (final)

Notes:

Belmont Hill’s all-senior first line of Dan Doherty, Dartmouth recruit Carl Hesler, and Mike Najjar led the way today, and will be expected to do so all year. We liked two of Belmont Hill’s young defensemen – sophomore Charlie Barrow, a ’97; and freshman Brian Matthews, a ’98… For Proctor, Harvard recruit Madsen played the first game today, and wasn’t at his best. Big senior defenseman Connor Simon and senior forward Ryan Glantz look like they could be good D-III prospects…Gov’s leading returning scorers are seniors Nathan Ferriero, a Northeastern recruit, and Ryan Scarfo, a Union recruit. The latter is out with a collarbone injury, hence it is a little hard to get a line on how, until his return, Governor’s will look. Scarfo, a sniper, was particularly missed on the PP. Junior forward Colton Lafata looked good. Senior Geoff Sullivan – Gov’s top defenseman -- is another top returning scorer. We expect he’ll be a coveted NESCAC-type blueliner – he can key a powerplay. In net, Brendan McMenimen will be a key to the Gov’s fortunes this year. Freshman ’98 goaltender Liam Moore, from the Syracuse Nationals organization, faced some pressure late in the third period of the Proctor game, and stood up to it nicely, allowing no goals…St. Andrew’s played a hard, up-tempo game, and hemmed Winchendon in their own end for most of the game we watched them in. Their clear-cut top forward today was senior Jay Mackie, a D-I prospect. Junior Warren Foegele played well too. And Brett Nichol, as we mentioned above, was flawless in net.

Scrimmage – Nobles @ St. Seb’s, 2:00 pm

Nobles 5, St. Sebastian’s 0 – Nobles lost a lot in the off-season – Calnan, Gilmour, Doane, et al -- but they might be better than we predicted in our pre-season poll. If, after what we saw today, we could do a rewrite, we’d put Nobles in the Top 10 – and take the Arrows out. Nobles’ top line of freshman Colin White, sophomore Cal Burke, and senior Will Sleeper was very good. Of all the players in the game, White had the greatest impact, and Sleeper was, well, the greatest sleeper – he looked like a solid D-I prospect out there. With key forwards having been lost to graduation and juniors, Sleeper has stepped up his game. Senior Tyler Wood, a Brown recruit, will be Nobles’ #1 d-man this season. Junior defenseman J.C. Brassard has a bigger role this season, and looked up to the task today. As for St. Sebastian’s, they just weren’t in sync today, and their goaltending was shaky. So we’ll just wait another day for the Arrows to come around. (Note: This scrimmage was a little hard to scout, as there were no rosters on hand. Fortunately, we know most of the players.)
