Exeter Remains Undefeated; Brunswick Hands Loomis First Loss

@ Exeter 3, Brooks 2 -- Exeter knocked Brooks from the ranks of the undefeated today, but it didn't come easily. After Brooks F PJ Kelleher notched his second goal of the day to make it a 2-2 game midway through the second, Exeter's Ben Solin, with his second goal of the day, scored what held up as the game-winner. The goal came on the PP at 11:35 of the second, and that was it for the day's scoring. The goalies took care of things the rest of the way. Bryan Botcher (22/24) got the win for Exeter. Max Prawdzik kicked out 20 of 23 in a losing cause. "Coming off the layoff, it wasn't a sharp or crisp game," Exeter coach  Dana Barbin said. "But it was a hard-fought game. Brooks is solid, tough, and smart with the puck. They battled hard."

@ Brunswick 4, Loomis-Chaffee 3 -- Brunswick (14-3-0), which has been causing havoc for a lot of teams thus far, pulled off a big one today, knocking off  #1-ranked and previously unbeaten Loomis. Host Brunswick fell behind 3-2 in the second period, but junior Colin Slyne tied it at 3-3 with his second of the day, a PP tally with 1:22 left in the second period. Early in the third -- at 1:10 -- sophomore Christian LeSueur gave Brunswick the lead and senior G Matteo Esposito (28/31) barred the door the rest of the way. Sophomore D Phil Kemp (1g,1a) and senior D Michael Faulkner (2a) also figured in the Wick's attack.

Nobles 4 @ St. Sebastian's 0 -- Junior F Mike Fahie and soph. F Cam Burke each scored two goals. Senior F Miles Wood had two assists, as did juniors Danny Jacobs and Luke Stevens. Nobles outshot St. Seb's, 25-20. Junior Brendan Cytulik notched the shutout.

Lawrence Academy 4 @ BB&N 3 -- After BB&N senior Fuller Winton and freshman Jack Studley scored a pair of goals 40 seconds apart with a little over five minutes to go in the third period, Lawrence soph Craig Needham scored the game-winner with 1:01 on the clock. Needham (2g,1a) and senior Evan Dahl (1g,1a) each had multiple points for LA. Junior F Chris Butler and sophomore F Alex Cohen each had two assists for BB&N.

@ Choate 6, Kingswood-Oxford 2 -- Senior D Brendan Russ (2g,1a) and junior F Henry Marshall (1g,2a) each had three points to lead the Wild Boars' attack.

Pomfret 3 @ Deerfield 1 -- Pomfret junior goaltender David Altman kicked out 31 of 32 shots to lead his team to a road win at Deerfield. Pomfret junior D Raphael Guillebon had three assists and forwards Cam McGuire (1g,1a) and Andrew Shields (1g,1a) each had two points.

@ Belmont Hill 1, Milton 0 -- A first-period unassisted goal by sophomore Christian O'Neil was all the offense the home team needed today. Junior goaltender Matthew Barrow (22/22) took care of the rest. Milton senior Drew Hotte (32/33) had a strong game too.

Proctor 4 @ Tilton 3 -- A goal by sophomore Tate Singleton with one second left on the clock lifted Proctor to a 4-3 road win. Singleton (1g,1a) and senior Derek Britner (1g,1a) each had two points for the Hornets. Senior Justin Goldman (2a) had the same for the Rams. Proctor outshot Tilton 33-19.

St. Mark's 5 @ Berwick 0 -- Junior D Peter Housakos (2g,1a), and junior forwards Luke O'Brien (1g,1a)  and Zach Tsekos (1g,1a) led the Lions today. Junior Ryan Ferland got the shutout, kicking out 23 shots.

@ Dexter 5, Rivers 2 -- Juniors Kevin Hock (2g,1a) and Patrick Daley (2a), and seniors Bryan Green (2g), Ryan Donato (1g,1a), and Sam D'Antuono (2a) led the Dexter attack. Senior Joe Sacco and sophomore Charlie Lawerence each scored a goal for the visitors.

@ Groton 5, Moses Brown 1 -- Junior Michael Brown (2g,2a), freshman Chris Brown (3a), and soph Kei Nawa (2g) paced the Groton offense. Junior Ben McLean, in his first start of the season, stopped 17 of 18 shots. Groton outshot the Quakers 49-18, who are having a tough season (1-14-0).

@ Albany Academy 9, Portledge 4 -- Senior Nick Boyagian (2g,2a), soph Liam Bove (2g,1a), PG Tyson Araujo (2g,1a), and junior Kevin O'Neil (1g,2a) paced then Cadets' attack. For Portledge, junior F Eric Linell (2g,2a) and senior D Joe Deszak (1g,3a) each had four points.

Millbrook 5 @ Berkshire 3-- Millbrook broke open a 2-2 game with three consecutive third-period goals, the last an empty-netter. Junior Massimo Luciani (1g, 2a), senior Jacob Moreau (2g), and soph Matt Gosiewski (1g,1a) led the Mustangs' offense. Junior goaltender Owen Johansson (30/33) picked up the win. Berkshire junior G Sam Merrill (21/25) suffered the loss.

@ Gunnery 3, Kent 2 -- Junior F Cam Donaldson scored with 35 seconds left to lift host Gunnery to a 3-2 win over Kent. PG Alex Hopkins and freshman Zach Pellegrino scored Gunnery's other goals. Senior F Max Kaufman (1g,1a) and junior D Greg Krisberg (2a) figured in both Kent goals. In net, Gunnery junior Trevin Kozlowski (23/25) got the win. Kent sophomore Peter Negron (32/35) took the loss. Gunnery has won seven of their last eight.

North Yarmouth Academy 4 @ Kents Hill 3 -- Junior Josh Chapman (1g,2a) and freshman Michael Pitts (2g) led NYA.

Sat. Jan. 31 Game Highlights

-- Interns Needed

Due to travel, there will be no game highlights for tonight. Please accept our apologies.

As usual, box scores will appear on the scoreboard page.

While we are on the subject of game highlights, we wish to announce that we are looking for one or more interns to handle part of this job for next season -- and possibly other writing assignments as well. While we are calling this an 'internship', it is actually a paid internship. The reason is simple. We do not approve of companies -- most with resources we can't even imagine  -- asking interns to work for free. So we won't do it. However, the pay will be on the nominal side. However, there will be chances for an increase.

Our search will center on prep, high school, or college students who are interested in sports journalism as a possible career. Someone recently out of college can also apply. Strong writing skills, which includes spelling and grammar, are requirements. Primary qualities we are looking for center around reliability, a desire to get the facts right, and an understanding of how news stories are constructed -- i.e., who, what, when, where, and (sometimes) why. Much of this will be learned by doing. The ability to write a great lede, from which the rest of any news story flows, takes a lot of practice. Writing game highlights is, essentially, writing a lede.

We don't care if applicants are male or female, or wish to work on the boys side of USHR, or the girls. We would like to at least try one or two applicants out between now and the end of the season.

Please send a writing example, be it journalism or any form of expository writing that you think represents your best work. Ideally, we would like to see submissions consist of one sports piece and one piece of expository writing on another subject. We're not picky, though. We're looking for promise. If you are proud of what you have, just send it along. And tell us a little something about yourself.

Please send to cwarner "at" ushr.com

Thank you.

Wed. Jan. 28, 2015 Highlights
Avon Tops #1 Loomis; Wood Ejected in Nobles Win

@ Avon Old Farms 5, Loomis-Chaffee 2 – After playing well but coming up short in a 3-2 loss to Westminster Monday, the host Winged Beavers came out flying against #1 Loomis, building a 4-1 lead after the first period en route to the 5-2 win. John Giatrelis (2g,1a) had three points for Avon; and Patrick Harper (1g,1a), Tyler Carangelo (1g,1a), Brendan Ashe (2a), and Ben Mirageas (2a) each had two. Tucker Weppner (28/30) earned the win; Tim Birarelli (20/25) took the loss.

@ Kimball Union 2, Exeter 2 – A Teddy Hart goal at 10:33 of the third lifted still-undefeated Exeter to a 2-2 tie with host Kimball Union today. Bobby Young and Ben Finkelstein scored for KUA, both in the first period, while Ben Solin scored #2 Exeter’s first goal, also in the first period. Bryan Botcher (30/32) and Peyton Porter (26/28) were the goaltenders.

@ Nobles 3, St. Sebastian’s 2 – St. Seb’s came out blazing and took a 2-0 first period lead on goals from Peter Mullin and Christian Reenstierna, but Nobles struck back with goals from Zach Janfaza and Cody Todesco in the final three minutes, tying the game at 2-2 heading into the first intermission. The game-winner, in a physical second period, came on a Pat Murray goal at 12:42. From there, the hosts held on. Nobles goaltender Brendan Cytulik (20/22) earned the win, while Danny Higgins (18/21) was the hard luck loser. The Arrows struggled on the power play, squandering 12 minutes of man-up play. Nobles’ Miles Wood was assessed a major/game misconduct for head-butting with five minutes left in the period. Nobles’ Murray got a major for cross-checking in the third. A Billy Carrabino penalty with 2:13 left in regulation gave St. Seb’s a chance to tie it up with the extra skater. For Nobles, Wood will miss Friday’s game vs. Rivers.

Choate 3 @ Trinity-Pawling 2 – Host T-P held a 2-0 lead halfway through the second, but the Wild Boars came back with goals from Nick Sanchez and Charley Borek to send it to the second intermission at 2-2. Borek scored the game-winner – and his second goal of the game – at 7:40 of the third. Sam Tucker (33/35) earned the win. Felix Marcotte-Hetu (25/28) took the loss.

Westminster 7 @ Deerfield 4 – Juniors Taggart Corriveau (4g,1a) and Johnny McDermott (1g,4a) led the charge with five points apiece.

Cushing 6 @ NMH 3 – Cushing broke out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. Jack Carroll (2g,1a), David Cotton (1g,2a), and Jake Simons (1g,2a) led the Penguins attack. Goalies were recent Arizona State commit Joey Daccord (21/24), and Conor O/Brien (40/46).

Salisbury 1 @ Gunnery 0 – A Mike O’Leary goal in the first period, and a shutout from Bailey MacBurnie (28/28) was all Salisbury needed today. Both teams played a good, hard game. And both goalies, Salisbury’s MacBurnie and Gunnery’s Trevin Kozlowski (26/27) played well.

@ Berkshire 6, Hotchkiss 2 – Ryan Keelan (2g,2a) and Barclay Gammill (2g,2a) each had four points in the Bears win over the Bearcats. Spencer Cookson (24/26) picked up the win.

@ Kent 6, Taft 2 – Teddy Simson (1g,2a), Conor Landrigan (2g), and Greg Krisberg (2a) led the Lions. Peter Negron kicked out 25 of 27 for the win.

Tilton 2 @ New Hampton 1 (OT) – A Justin Goldman goal at 3:58 of OT lifted the Rams to victory. Alexander Gerasimenko (25/26) got the win.

@ Kingswood-Oxford 2, Pomfret 1 – Brendan Lantieri scored both of the Wyverns’ goals and Nick Bridges stopped 23 of 24 for the win. David Altman (33/35) was the hard-luck loser for Pomfret.

@ Williston 4, Millbrook 2JoJo Carbone (2g,1a), Jack Kelly (1g,1a), and Tyler Scroggins (1g,1a) led the Williston offense. Goalies were Owen Johansson (31/34) for Millbrook, and Shane Mason (26/28) for Williston.

Brewster Academy 3, Holderness 2 – Holderness kept it close, but Brewster never trailed in this one despite being outshot 38-24.  Kevin Lacroix (36/38) earned the win.

No Losers in This One

Exeter, NH -- Dexter came close to knocking off undefeated Exeter tonight, but didn't and had to settle for a 2-2 tie in a game as good -- and as hard-fought -- as any we have seen this season.

"It felt like playoff hockey," Exeter coach Dana Barbin said afterward.

It did indeed.

For the first half of the game, it looked like Exeter, which held a 1-0 lead courtesy of junior center Devin Moore's rebound goal 25 seconds into the second period, was on the verge of taking control. Dexter was playing well, but it was also a slightly cautious, not-to-lose approach. Senior goaltender Nick Lanni, who has taken over as the Dexter's #1 goalie, was facing a lot of shots. And for the first half of the game he kept it a one-goal game.

Things became interesting when Dexter junior forward Patrick Daly scored after slipping a defender and breaking in alone on Exeter goalie Bryan Botcher. This, by the way, was a pure speed goal that not many prep players can make. Like Exeter's Teddy Hart, Daly is a player opponents have to be constantly aware of when he's on the ice. If he gets behind the D, he's off to the races, and that's what happened here.

Daly's goal changed the tenor of the game. From that point forward, the game was ratcheted up a couple of notches. Dexter, which previously had their hands full just trying to keep Exeter at bay, came to life, and, for the first time in the game, forced Exeter back on their heels and controlled play for a long stretch.

Exeter was allowing Dexter too much puck possesion time, and, not surprisingly, less than four minutes later, with 1:55 remaining in the period, junior Kevin Hock put Dexter up 2-1, a lead the visitors took into the second intermission.

Exeter, despite being unable to convert on any of their three power play opportunities in the game (Dexter had no power plays), got it back to 2-2 at the 2:49 mark of the third period when senior Andy Espinoza scored off a deflection in front.

With the score tied, 2-2, the third period featured great up-and-down hockey, missed chances, blocked shots, and some excellent saves. As the clock wound down, that game had that inevitability-of-overtime feel.

And overtime was the best of all. This was where Botcher had to come up big for Exeter, as Dexter controlled play early and in two separate sequences masses of players were all over the crease banging away at pucks, but Botcher stood tall and, while Exeter's winning streak is gone, they remain the only undefeated team in prep hockey.

"It was a great tie," Dexter coach Dan Donato said. "I think we found ourselves as a team. I think we played a more mature team game than we have lately. Our guys are understanding the system now. Our discipline on the forecheck didn't allow them to come up ice with speed. It was our best game in a while, but we still haven't put together a full game.

Donato reported that Lanni, Dexter's goaltender, gave a highly emotional speech in the locker room between the second and third period.

"He talked about a relative who had died of cancer. It was one of the best speeches I've ever heard," Donato said, adding, "It didn't leave me much to say."

T-P Ties Up Salisbury; Taft Puts a Scare into Loomis

Loomis 6 @ Taft 4
-- #1-ranked Loomis held a 5-0 lead over Taft going into the third period, but the Rhinos came out with a charge, scoring four consecutive goals -- led by a hat trick from sophomore Matteo Mangiardi -- in under nine minutes to put a scare into the visitors. Senior Ben Sharf (1g,2a) led the Loomis scorers. Loomis outshot Taft 32-29. The Pelicans are now 14-1-0.

Exeter 5 @ Tabor 1 -- #2 Exeter moved to 15-0-0 as the senior line of Andy Espinoza (2g), Stanley Brenner, (1g,1a), and Max Roche (1g,1a) each had two points. So, too, did junior D Trevor Cosgrove (1g,1a).

@ Westminster 5, Canterbury 1 -- Senior Jack Fitzgerald (2g,1a), and juniors Taggart Corriveau (2g), and Kevin O'Leary (1g,1a) led the charge for Westminster. Junior Nick Sanford (15/16) got the win.

@ Choate 2, Berkshire 1 (OT) -- A goal from sophomore D Billy Overby -- his first of the year -- at 3:57 of overtime gave the Wild Boars the win. Choate senior Andrew Tucci (27/28) and Berkshire junior Spencer Cookson (33/35) had strong games between the pipes.

Cushing 7 @ Thayer 2 -- Cushing senior Stephen Marsico had a hat trick (the third goal was an empty-netter) and an assist to lead the Penguins past Thayer. Junior Ty Amonte (1g,1a) and senior Lincoln Griffin (2a) had a hand in both Thayer goals. Cushing actually had two ENG in this one, as coach Tony Amonte pulled Mike Royer for the extra skater at the start of the third period and again at the end. While the score would indicate that Cushing dominated Thayer, that's not quite true. Thayer outshot Cushing, 40-32. But Joey Daccord (38 saves) was the better goalie, and #3 Cushing improves to 14-1-2 in NEPSIHA play.

Hotchkiss 3 @ Kent 1 -- A third-period power play goal from junior Will Somers broke the 1-1 deadlock, and senior Tim Allen added an empty-netter. Hotchkiss senior Louis-Philippe De Courcy (32/33) got the win and Kent junior Jackson Norris (36/38) was the hard luck loser.

@ St. Sebastian's 4, Andover 2 -- Senior Will D'Orsi (1g,1eng, 1a) and sophomore RJ Murphy (1g,2a) led the attack and senior G Danny Higgins (21/23) did the rest. Andover's Rob Bakerian was called for a hit from behind and given a five minute major and a game misconduct at 1:49 of the first.

Kimball Union 4 @ Deerfield 2 -- With the two teams tied 1-1 in the third, KUA went on a binge, striking for three straight goals in under two minutes. PG Oscar Flory (17/19) got the win. The #8 Wildcats improved to 15-4-0.

Pomfret 2 @ Worcester Academy 1 (OT) -- Junior F Christian Figliola scored his first goal of the season at 2:04 to lift Pomfret to the OT win. Pomfret senior Carlin Testa and Worcester junior Jack Moore (26/28) were strong in net.

Trinity-Pawling 3 @ Salisbury 3 --  The two teams traded goals throughout the game, but the final one, which allowed Salisbury to escape with the tie, came from junior Tom Lee who, with goalie Nick Sorgio pulled for the extra skater and 52 seconds on the clock, found the back of the net. #4 Salisbury outshot T-P 37-17. Senior Felix Marcotte-Hetu had 34 saves for T-P.

@ Albany Academy 5, Hoosac 2 -- PG Tyson Araujo had a hat trick and sophomore Josh Sanchez and senior Nick Boyagian each had two points to lead the Cadets attack. Junior Giancarlo Ventre kicked out 36 of 38 for the win.

Roxbury Latin 5 @ Middlesex 3 -- Roxbury Latin got goals from five different scorers and sophomore goalie Bryan McGrath (19/22) got the win.

St. George's 3 @ BB&N 2 -- Host BB&N had a 2-0 lead late in the second, but St. George's scored the next three. The GWG was scored by sophomore Toby Almeida. Dragons junior G Colin Seely (20/22) got the win.

@ Avon 5, NMH 3 -- Senior Chase Zieky had a hat trick and junior Jamie Armstong (1g, 2a) and soph Patrick Harper (3a) each had three points to lead the Winged Beavers to their third straight win.

Gunnery 9 @ Millbrook 4 -- Gunnery had three power play goals, a SHG from junior Cam Donaldson, and a penalty shot score from senior Jake Marrello to account for five of their goals today. Marello (1g,3a) led all scorers with four points. Shawn Knowlton, Donaldson, Josh Gagne and D Nick Quillan each had three points. #5 Gunnery improves to 14-4-0.

@ New Hampton 3, Berwick 0 -- The hosts had goals from three different players and sophomore Thomas McLarnon stopped all 19 shots he faced.

@ St. Mark's 6, Holderness 2 -- Senior Adam Lee (1g,3a), and juniors Zach Tsekos (1g,2a), Luke O'Brien (2g), Derek Osik (2g) and Tyler Rogers (2a) led the Lions' attack. Junior Ryan Ferland kicked out 20 of 22 shots. The #10 Lions extend their unbeaten streak to eight games. O'Brien was taken from the game with 2:48 remaining in the second period after a hit to the head.

Proctor 4 @ Groton 1 -- This was a 2-1 game inside the final two minutes when Proctor notched a pair of  empty-netters. Senior Connor Fries and junior Jake Pappalardo each had two goals. It was a goalies game; senior Beau Collins (35/36) got the win; junior Matt Efros (37/39) took the loss.

@ Portsmouth Abbey 1, Pingree 1 -- Senior Harrison Wall scored with a minute to go and the goalie pulled for the extra attacker to lift PA to the tie at home. Soph Bailey Strangis (39/40) was in net for Portsmouth Abbey; senior Chris Devito (21/22) for Pingree.

@ Nobles 5, St. Paul's 3 -- This was a 4-3 game after SPS senior Austin Ricci scored a SHG with 2:14 left in regulation. St. Paul's pulled goalie Nathan Colannino for the extra skater and Luke Stevens scored an ENG with nine seconds on the clock to salt it away and extend Nobles' winning streak to seven games. The #6 Bulldogs are now 11-3-1. Ricci had a hat trick for St. Paul's and led all scorers in the game.

@ Dexter 2, Kents Hill 0 -- Senior Ryan Donato and junior Patrick Daly scored for Dexter and senior goalie Nick Lannie (18/18) earned the shutout. Junior Billy McLaughlin (36/38) was the hard-luck loser.

@ Brooks 1, Rivers 1 -- With the game tied 0-0 early in the third Rivers senior F Joe Sacco scored at the 4:05 mark. Brooks junior F Paul Cappozzi tied it up just 28 seconds later and that's the way it ended. Senior Max Prawdzik (22/23) was in net for Brooks; and freshman Aidan Porter (20/21) for Rivers. #9 Brooks is now 11-1-3.

RPI Rankings: Check 'Em Out

The Holiday Tournaments are done, we’re nine days into January and, through Friday, over 600 NEPSIHA games have been played, with most teams having played an average of 8-12 games. In other words, the sample size is large enough for the numbers to have meaning. And the meaning will increase by the day.

This year, unlike previous seasons when we published the RPI weekly, now the results are calculated in real time -- just click the RPI link in the navigation menu at any time to see the latest results.

Before we get to the rankings, however, we feel a quick reminder of what goes into the rankings is in order, especially considering that every year we have some new readers. The RPI is set up as a way to rank NEPSIHA teams in an equitable manner, one that attempts to take into account both how well a team has performed as well as the strength of its schedule. With that in mind, here are a couple of reminders. 1) Only games against other NEPSIHA teams count toward playoff calculations. 2) Games in tournaments decided after the first five minutes of overtime (i.e., via an extended overtime, or shootout) count as ties for both teams involved. 3) All games between NEPSHIA teams will count towards the RPI.

In addition, there are four affiliate NEPSIHA teams this season: Hill, Lawrenceville, Stanstead College, and Académie Saint-Louis. Their games against traditional NEPSIHA schools, as well as games amongst themselves, all go into the calculations.

RPI calculations are based on three categories:

1. The first portion of the calculation is based on a team’s winning percentage. Simply put, this is how well a team performs in its own games. This is important because a team needs a strong winning percentage regardless of whom they play. A team’s winning percentage is calculated by adding the number of wins plus 1/2 the number of ties and dividing the total by the number of games played. Winning percentage accounts for 25% of the total RPI calculation.

2. The second portion of the RPI is a calculation of each team’s opponents winning percentage. In other words, how good are the teams that you are playing during the year in question? Winning percentage is calculated the same way as above, but this time the mathematics is based on the total number of your opponent’s wins, plus half the number of their ties. Next, divide that total by the number of games played by your opponents.  This category is worth 21% of the RPI calculation because how you play (your own winning percentage) should be worth a bit more than how your opponents fare (the second category).

3. The third portion of the RPI takes things a step further, and is based on your opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage.  This is, basically, a ‘strength of schedule’ component, and is an attempt to eliminate much of the variation that can happen to teams on a yearly basis in terms of wins and losses.  This helps eliminate the need/desire to change schedules because one team may be stronger or weaker from one year to the next.  It also eliminates the possibility that, by defeating another team, your own RPI could actually decrease . This third category is worth 54% of the total RPI calculation.

The above RPI calculations, as utilized by NEPSIHA, mirror those used by Division I college hockey and were adopted for use in 2006, when Div. II was eliminated in boys prep hockey. However, the Stuart/Corkery ‘Elite Eight’ playoff tournament seedings are not determined solely by RPI. To arrive at the final seedings for the Elite 8 another step is required. That’s where the JSPR system comes into play. Just as college hockey has a system for comparing the top teams and how they fare against one another -- i.e., the Pairwise Rankings – prep hockey utilizes the JSPR system as a means of comparing how the top teams fared against each other. At this point of the season the RPI rankings give the best point of comparison, but soon we will begin posting JSPR rankings (along with an explanation of how those numbers are calculated). Bear in mind that, in order for a team to be eligible for JSPR consideration, they must finish among the top 16 teams in RPI. When the regular season ends, and the top eight finishers, as determined by the JSPR formula, are arrived at. They become the Elite 8. The eight remaining schools, solely using the RPI, are then seeded for both the Big School and Small School Tournaments.

Notes:

-- First off, please note that, regardless of its RPI, if a team does not play 15 games against NEPSAC competition, they will not be eligible for the playoffs. This used to apply to a handful of schools, but those to whom it regularly happened – Hamden Hall, Harvey, King-Low, Rye Country Day, St. Luke’s, and St. Thomas More -- are no longer in NEPSIHA.

-- If you are curious as to how things can change, or happen to be on a team that’s feeling pretty pleased with itself -- or not pleased at all -- consider this:

Last year at this time, Gunnery was 18th in RPI, but finished at #8 – and went on to reach the prep final, where they lost to Salisbury, 3-2 in OT. Nobles was at #10 a year ago, but pulled up to #5, and made it into the Elite 8. Conversely, KUA was at #5 and dropped to #10 – and didn’t make the Elite 8. (They won the Small School Tournament, however). Loomis was at #30 on this date a year ago and wound up 18th in RPI, and edged St. Paul’s, who was at #11, in the Large School final. Choate pulled themselves up from 27th to 14th and made the Large School Tournament. Ditto for Belmont Hill, who pulled themselves up from #28.

There were some teams that plummeted, the biggest being BB&N, which was #8 in RPI on this date a year ago, but fell to #30. (They had BU recruit Brien Diffley and a couple of solid seniors, but lack of depth caught up with them.) Also, Williston fell from #12 to 26.

In other words, the season is far from over. Every game affects everyone else. And what may seem like a relatively inconsequential loss -- at any point of the season -- can be the difference between playing in March or not. Every team that just misses the playoffs can always pinpoint that one they wish they could have back.

There are some big hockey games ahead and they just keep getting bigger as we make our way through February. We'll attempt to point them out when they arise.
