JSPR Explained
Last Friday, we shared with you an explanation of the RPI and how those numbers are calculated. The RPI however, is merely the first step in considering which teams are selected for the Stuart/Corkery, i.e. the ‘Elite Eight” tournament, which is designed to showcase the top eight NEPSIHA teams, regardless of school size.

So how are the teams selected?

This article explains the math behind the rankings. And here we go:

Once the RPI numbers are calculated, the top 16 teams based on RPI – referred to henceforth as "teams under consideration" or “TUC” for short -- are then shuttled into what is known as the JSPR Ranking. This system, analogous to the Pairwise Ranking used by the NCAA to determine seeding for the Men’s Div. I hockey tournament, provides a second level of evaluating teams based on four criteria, which we will get to shortly. This first step is necessary, in that it affords a deeper comparison of the top RPI teams. Only 16 teams are put into the JSPR system and analyzed because 16 teams presents a large enough sample size to determine the top eight teams overall. It would be extremely time consuming -- and with no corresponding benefit -- to evaluate all NEPSIHA teams under the JSPR system because if a team fails to crack the top 16 in RPI, there is virtually no chance that it would crack the top eight in the JSPR system. It would lack a sufficient number of wins against the top teams.

So how does the system work? Essentially, the JSPR Ranking is a means of doing a virtual comparison between any two given teams. The ideal, of course, would be to have one large tournament in which each of the top 16 teams play each other but, as that is not going to happen, the JSPR system fills the breach by utilizing statistical data to determine which team, on paper, would win any theoretical matchup. It would, of course, be ideal to set up a computer simulation, knowing the strengths and weaknesses of every player on each team, or maybe even design a computer game simulation. Since that is not possible, we can only look at the numbers to which we have ready access. The JSPR does this well, using four categories in which to compare any two teams, and, in the process, determining which would win these simulated games. This is the heart of the system, and the means by which the 16 Teams Under Consideration are arrived at and, from that, the Elite 8 is derived.

The four categories that are included in the JSPR are:

1. Head-to-head result(s), i.e., if the teams have actually played each other on ice.

2. Comparing two teams' RPI, i.e., how do they stand against all other NEPSIHA teams, so that the RPI is still a critical component of the JSPR Rankings.

3. Record against mutual opponents, i.e., if two teams have played the same opponents on the ice, how have each fared.

4. Record against Teams Under Consideration, i.e., how have the two teams played against other top 16 teams as determined by the RPI.

The easiest way to show how JSPR works is to do a comparison based on some data. Because we've been using a variation on the same article for several years here, we're going to be comparing Kimball Union and Berkshire. When this article was first drafted, those two teams were, respectively, the first place and third place teams in the RPI.

In that year, KUA and Berkshire did not play each other head to head, so neither team won the first comparison on ice. But at the time, KUA had the higher RPI so they won that comparison and got one (1) point. However, at that same time, Berkshire had a better record against mutual opponents. Because of that, they won that comparison and earned one (1) point. And finally, KUA had a better record against Teams Under Consideration and thus earned a point in that category as well.  So, when this virtual comparison between KUA and Berkshire was done, KUA came out on top in two categories while Berkshire was ahead in only one. So KUA was declared the winner.

Here's how it looked:

Since an even number of categories are being compared, there is always a chance that the two teams in question will end up tied in our simulation. In such a case, the first tiebreaker is the head-to-head record (the best indicator of the comparative strength of the two teams), the second is RPI (the most all-encompassing category), the third is record against mutual opponents, and the fourth is record against Teams Under Consideration. In the above example, this process is then carried out for KUA against each of the other 14 teams, and they are awarded their ‘JSPR points.' In the end the ‘winner' of each virtual comparison is shown in table form, as follows:

Each team is therefore involved in 15 comparisons and, once the table is completed, the total number of ‘wins' for each team is added up. The team with the most 'matchup points' garners the top seed in the tournament, the team with the second highest amount of points gets the second seed, and so on. In the case of  teams winding up tied in points in the final table, the winner of the individual JSPR comparison gets the higher seed. And that's it. When these computations are complete, the top eight teams in the JSPR are ranked -- regardless of school size -- for the Elite 8 Tournament. At that point, the remaining NEPSIHA teams (including the eight that were looked at in the JSPR but did not get into the Elite 8 tournament, i.e teams that finished in the #9-16 JSPR slots) are compared solely by RPI and school size. The top remaining large schools in RPI are selected to play in the Martin/Earl ‘Large School Tournament,’ while the top remaining small schools in RPI are selected to play in the Piatelli/Simmons ‘Small School Tournament.’

There is one final wrinkle. In seeding the three 'tournaments within a tournament,' just as in the past, the top four seeds are considered home seeds and the bottom four will be the visitors. In the past, #1 played #8, and #2 played #7 etc. and if the travel distance was over 2 hours and 45 minutes the affected teams would play their quarterfinal matchups at a neutral site. In 2013, though, the tournament committee was given the power to shift the seeds so that more games will be played regionally at home sites. In other words, the #1 seed could be assigned to play the #7 seed rather than the #8 if,  by doing so, the need for a neutral site game could be eliminated. That becomes a moot point once the tournament gets past the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the highest remaining seeds will play the lowest remaining seeds, as they always have.

In summary, the RPI portion of the playoff calculation system starts by taking the results on-ice -- the best means of determining which teams have attained the best results from the most difficult head-to-head schedules. Next, the best teams are compared to each other via the JSPR, which rewards teams for winning games on-ice against the best teams in the New England prep ranks. In the end, the greater number of games that any given team wins against the best teams in the league, the better off they will be. That is the very heart of the system. It may seem complex, but we feel that, just like the NCAA system, it works. NEPSIHA has shown itself to be open-minded and always amenable to tweaks that will put an even finer point on the calculations. There have been several refinements since... well, last century.

Please keep in mind that the RPI and JSPR rankings USHR publishes are totally fluid and updated in real time, so changes can appear sudden and quixotic, though as the season moves along and the sample pool grows increasingly larger, the moves are less drastic. It's fun to watch, as there's a huge ripple effect and, while games between top teams can have an immediate -- and significant -- affect on the rankings so, too, can games that might appear less earth-shaking, i.e games that might lift a team from below .500 to .500 or above. The more games that are left to be played, the greater the potential volatility in the rankings. When the final accounting is made, the most-deserving teams will have reached the playoffs and, with three tournaments, a greater number of teams will experience the joy of making the playoffs.

We hope all this makes sense. We know it's a little complex mathematically, so if anything is fuzzy please let us know, as we are always tinkering with this explanation, trying to make it more easily understandable.

RPI Rankings: Check 'Em Out

We’re three weeks into January. Over 900 NEPSIHA games have been played, with most teams having played an average of 14-16 games. In other words, the sample size is plenty large enough for the numbers to have meaning.

This year, just like last year, the RPI results are calculated in real time -- just click the RPI link in the navigation menu at any time to see the latest results.

Before we get to the rankings, however, we feel a quick reminder of what goes into the rankings is in order, especially considering that every year we have some new readers. The RPI is set up as a way to rank NEPSIHA teams in an equitable manner, one that attempts to take into account both how well a team has performed as well as the strength of its schedule. With that in mind, here are some reminders:

1) All games between NEPSHIA teams and 2015-16 affiliates* count towards the RPI.

2) Games in tournaments decided after the first five minutes of overtime (i.e., via an extended overtime, or shootout) count as ties for both teams involved.

3) Only games against other NEPSIHA teams count toward playoff calculations.

* Académie Saint-Louis, Bishop's College School, Hill School, Lawrenceville, Nichols, Stanstead College, and St. Andrew's College (affiliate teams are not eligible for NEPSIHA playoffs).

RPI calculations are based on three categories:

1. The first portion of the calculation is based on a team’s winning percentage. Simply put, this is how well a team performs in its own games. This is important because a team needs a strong winning percentage regardless of whom they play. You can calculate your team’s winning percentage by adding the number of wins plus 1/2 the number of ties and dividing the total by the number of games played. Winning percentage accounts for 25% of the total RPI calculation.

2. The second portion of the RPI is a calculation of each team’s opponents’ winning percentage. In other words, how good are the teams that you are playing during the year in question? Winning percentage is calculated the same way as above, but this time the mathematics is based on the total number of your opponent’s wins, plus half the number of their ties. Next, divide that total by the number of games played by your opponents.  This category is worth 21% of the RPI calculation because how you play (your own winning percentage) should be worth a bit more than how your opponents fare (the second category).

3. The third portion of the RPI takes things a step further, and is based on your opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage.  This is, basically, a ‘strength of schedule’ component, and is an attempt to eliminate much of the variation that can happen to teams on a yearly basis in terms of wins and losses.  This helps eliminate the need/desire to change schedules because one team may be stronger or weaker from one year to the next.  It also eliminates the possibility that, by defeating another team, your own RPI could actually decrease. This third category is worth 54% of the total RPI calculation.

The above RPI calculations, as utilized by NEPSIHA, mirror those used by Division I college hockey and were adopted for use in 2006, when Div. II was eliminated in boys prep hockey. However, the Stuart/Corkery ‘Elite Eight’ playoff tournament seedings are not determined solely by RPI. To arrive at the final seedings for the Elite 8 another step is required. That’s where the JSPR system comes into play. Just as college hockey has a system for comparing the top teams and how they fare against one another -- i.e., the Pairwise Rankings – prep hockey utilizes the JSPR system as a means of comparing how the top teams fared against each other. At this point of the season the RPI rankings give the best point of comparison, but we will shortly begin posting JSPR rankings (along with an explanation of how those numbers are calculated). Bear in mind that, in order for a team to be eligible for JSPR consideration, they must finish among the top 16 teams in RPI. When the regular season ends, and the top eight finishers, as determined by the JSPR formula, are arrived at. They become the Elite 8. The eight remaining schools, solely using the RPI, are then seeded for both the Big School and Small School Tournaments.

Notes:

-- First off, please note that, regardless of its RPI, if a team does not play 15 games against NEPSAC competition, they will not be eligible for the playoffs. This used to apply to a handful of schools, but those to whom it regularly happened – Hamden Hall, Harvey, King-Low, Rye Country Day, St. Luke’s, and St. Thomas More -- are no longer in NEPSIHA.

-- Of the teams that held the top 16 RPI spots on Jan. 21, 2015 --- exactly a year ago – 15 of them were still in the Top 16 at the close of the regular season. St. Paul’s, which had been #16 dropped to #23 in the end, while Thayer pulled up from #17 to #16. Of the teams ranked #1-9 a year ago, eight finished in the top 8, and the team that didn’t finished #9 overall.

We have a feeling there will be more movement this time around.

A good example of RPI at work can be seen with Tabor. They are 10-8-0 in RPI and, at #17, are just one spot behind Brooks, which is 10-4-1. Tabor is unique in that they have played a lot of strong teams. In eight games against the top 12 teams in RPI they are 4-4. They have beaten Milton, Cushing, Kimball Union, and Berkshire, while losing to Avon, Exeter, Gunnery, and Loomis. On the flip side of the coin, they have also lost to struggling teams, e.g. St. Paul’s picked up their only win of the season over Tabor. The Seawolves are tough to play against – except when they’re not – and despite their eight losses are very much in the playoff hunt.

Brooks Upsets #2 Exeter in OT

-- Win is School's First-Ever Over Exeter

North Andover, Mass. -- With the clock ticking down on overtime, Brooks sophomore Max Rand dug the puck out of the right corner and found junior Niko Price in the slot. Price, who had to spin around to get the shot on net, sent a low backhander past Exeter PG goalie Joey Lazzaro for the game-winner at 4:45 of overtime.

The win, a thrill for the home crowd, was also the first-ever for Brooks against Exeter, which is currently ranked #2.

Brooks was shorthanded going into the game, as all three of their freshmen were on a class trip. A couple of forwards -- Lewis Evans and Turner Cepuritis -- had to move back and play D.

Exeter got on the board first -- just 30 seconds into the game -- on a Devin Moore goal, but over the next four minutes, the hosts would tie it up on goals from Henry Cormier and Paul Capozzi to take a 2-1 lead.

The game would hang there through the remainder of the first, and all of the second. Finally, at 5:30 of the third, Exeter was able to tie it up at 2-2 on a Jordan Haney goal, a high shot from the point that found its way through traffic and beat Brooks junior goaltender Johnny Trotto over this left shoulder.

A key to the game came when Exeter went on a full 5-on-3 power play -- and got nothing. With players on the Brooks bench loudly urging the penalty killers on, players were blocking shots and closing off lanes.

"I am so proud of how hard they competed, and how disciplined they were for all three periods," said Brooks coach Dave Ries afterward.

"We kept our shifts short and protected the middle of the ice," added Ries. "That 5-on-3 penalty kill was a huge boost. The bench was just great. And, as he was all night long, Johnny Trotto was great in net."

Exeter coach Dana Barbin said, "The team that deserved to win this game won it. We weren't ready to play in the first. They won all the battles early. We woke up a little later. I thought both goalies played really well -- there were a lot of point-blank chances."

Asked about his team's full 5-on-3 man advantage in the third, Barbin said, "We let Brooks touch the puck too much. They got it out of the zone three times. On a 5-on-3 you shouldn't get the puck out of the zone even once. We could have won the game right there."

"I tip my hat to Brooks and Dave Ries," Barbin added. "He's worked hard to build that program to what it is today. His team is a reflection of that."
