KUA Remains #1 in USHR Prep Poll

Once again -- and for the fifth time in seven weeks -- Kimball Union (21-3-1) is #1 in this week's USHR Prep Poll.

In addition, there are a couple of new teams in the polls, as well as the usual movement.

Two teams from last week's poll didn't make the cut this time around: Belmont Hill, which has lost two of four, and Loomis, which has lost three in a row.

USHR Prep Poll, Week of Jan. 30, 2107

Sat. Jan. 28 Highlights

-- A Tyce Thompson 4x4 goal in the second period allowed #8 Salisbury to escape with a 1-1 tie at Berkshire. The goaltending -- Berkshire's Tom Draper (29/30) and Salisbury's Jonah Capriotti (26/27) -- was the story here.

-- A breakaway goal by junior Kai Duenez with 23 seconds left in OT gave Groton a 4-3 road win at Roxbury Latin and a sweep of the season series. Groton trounced RL 7-2 back on Dec. 7th. Roxbury Latin drops to 12-4-0 and has lost two in a row for the first time this season. Groton is 4-1-1 over its last six games.

--  A Tao Ishizuka goal at 4:46 of OT lifted Governor's to a 2-1 win at Brooks. Senior G Sam Best (21/22) got the win while Johnny Trotto (30/32) took the loss. Ishizuka, a junior, has 5 goals over his last 3 games.

-- A PPG goal from sophomore D Kevin Lassman with 4:56 remaining in the third lifted host Williston-Northampton to a 1-0 win over Brunswick. Junior Xander Rogers picked up the 22-save shutout, while Brunswick senior Strauss Mann (34/35) was the tough-luck loser.

-- #4 Rivers got goals from four different scorers and junior Aidan Porter (19/20) picked up the win. Middlesex sophomore Joe Stanizzi was kept extremely busy, kicking out 57 of 61 in a hard-luck loss. The win was Rivers's 8th in a row.

-- Senior D Marshall Rifai scored two goals, both assisted by classmate Chris Theodore, to lead host Hotchkiss to a 4-0 win over Deerfield. Senior Tyler Haywood (27 saves) earned the shutout.

-- An Eric Fournier PPG with ten seconds remaining broke a 2-2 and lifted NMH to a 3-2 road win at Tilton. Junior G Eric Green (25/27) picked up the win.

-- Senior D Josh Labonte (2g,1a) and sophomore G Peyton Durand (24/26) led Pomfret to a 4-2 road win at Canterbury. Junior Connor Amsley scored both Canterbury goals, one of them short-handed. Pomfret improves to 11-5-1.

-- Cushing edged #9 Belmont Hill 4-3 on the road as senior Joey Halstrom kicked out 40 of 43 to lead the way. The Penguins first goal was scored by senior Andrew Charmin, just called up from Cushing's "B" team. Sophomore Andrew Ide, junior Vilho Saariluoma, and senior Alec Andreucci also scored for Cushing. Bel Hill soph Connor Hopkins (14/18) took the loss. Sam Hesler (2g) and Christian O'Neill (1g,2a) provided all the Belmont Hill scoring.

-- Sophomore F Lynden Breen (3g,2a) and PG Harrison Piper (1g,2a) led the New Hampton attack in an 8-3 win at Brewster. New Hampton improves to 12-7-3.

-- #5 Exeter got goals from eight different scorers in an 8-0 win over the visitors from BB&N.

-- Nik Allain (2g,1a), Matteo Mangiardi (1g,2a), Jordan Tonelli (3a), and Misha Mrotchek (3a) led the Taft attack in a 7-1 home win over Trinity Pawling. Senior G Andrew Farrier (26/27) got the win. The Rhinos are now 10-5-1.

-- After going down 1-0 to #7 Loomis, host Andover scored four unanswered goals -- two from junior Quinn Doyle -- to take a 4-1 lead into the third. Loomis made things interesting with a pair of third period goals, a PP tally from junior Joey Cipollone and a 4x4 goal from sophomore Reilly Connors, his second goal of the game (and second of the season), to cut to 4-3. Andover PG Kyle Martin (33/36) picked up the win. Loomis, which outshot Andover 36-22, has lost three in a row and falls to 9-6-1.

-- Matt Boldy (2g,2a) had four points and Jack Halloran (2g,1a), Jack Nisbet (2g,1a), Chase McInnis (1g,2a), John Femia (3a) and d-man Bobby Pearl (3a) each had three points as #3 Dexter trounced the visitors from St. Mark's, 12-1.

-- Sophomore G Spencer Knight (27/27) posted his fourth shutout of the season to lead Avon Old Farms to a 5-0 win at Choate. Juniors Nick Wildgoose and Matt Kirwan each had a goal and an assist. Junior forwards Tyler Madden and Will Christensen, and junior d-man Mac Wiseman each had a goal. Avon improves to 10-4-3.

Things Are Getting Interesting
With nearly two-thirds of the prep season completed, and with every game played adding weight to the RPI and JSPR comparisons, here are some observations going into Saturday's action.

1. The East is way ahead of the West this year in terms of number of teams at the top of the RPI. There are no truly dominant teams in the West -- there is no Avon, Salisbury, or Gunnery with only one, or no, losses. If you look at the top 15 teams in terms of winning % there are 10 eastern teams and only five western teams. Is it simply a matter of there being true parity in the west? Perhaps, but it could also be about the number of games played. The top 10 teams in the East have averaged 17.8 games played -- let's round that to 18 -- while the top five teams in the West have averaged 16 (without Gunnery's 20 it is only 15).  There are four East teams with just 2-3 losses, but, apart from them, the numbers of losses is about the same as that of the teams in the West. It is indisputable that the advantage of 2-4 more wins truly affects winning percentage. Take Albany Academy for example. They only have two losses, but they haven't played a very good schedule -- no knock, as it takes time to build a strong schedule --  but Albany is high in RPI because they have only lost two games (to Thayer and Salisbury, teams ranked above them). If Albany loses another game or two it will drastically affect their winning percentage and probably drop them significantly. In other words, they have a small margin of error. Exeter, on the other hand, just lost to KUA, a 'good' loss, but the fact that they have four losses is covered up in large part by the fact that they also have 15 wins. Kent (9-4-2) and Avon (9-4-3) each have four losses -- and some ties -- but with only nine wins each they don't have the same margin for error that Exeter does. In the end, games played really do matter, especially when the range of games a team plays -- from 25 up to 35 -- varies so much. If everyone played 70-80 games it wouldn't make much difference. But given the smaller sample, it definitely does. This will smooth out over the next four weeks as the number of games played mounts.

2. There are three small schools -- KUA, Dexter, and Rivers -- that look like they will probably make the Elite 8.  This is impactful all the way down the line because, typically, there are only two small schools that make the Elite 8. The small schools usually dip below the large schools for the #6-8 slots in the small school tourney, therefore having another small school in the Elite 8 means an additional low-ranked small school will finish around .500 and make the post-season while a large school with both a better record and strength of schedule will not be playing in March. This has been a consistent source of debate and will likely continue to be.

3. Unless more than one from the group of Avon, Salisbury, or Kent go on a run, there may be only one West team in the Elite 8, which is kind of crazy when you think about it. This is likely about winning percentage but additonal insight could be gained by looking at the records of East vs. West matchups this season, something we haven't had the time to calculate. Still, from simply seeing all these teams in action, it's difficult to say definitely that eastern teams, overall, are that much stronger than western teams this year. It would be easy to say, "Well, it will all come out in the wash once the playoffs start." But if strong teams miss the playoffs, even that becomes questionable.

4. If you look at the current RPI leaders in groups of 10 -- i.e. 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, etc. -- the East teams are near the top of that group of ten five out of six times. In other words, the top 10 teams in each grouping have seven East and three West teams, with the top five teams all east, with the next five consisting of two east and three west. This is happening across the board because the East teams play each other a lot -- and a number of them have great winning percentages. Hence, when compared to teams with similar RPI they come out ahead.

5. Pomfret, Proctor, New Hampton, Holderness, Proctor, and Tilton are all bubbling under the Top 16  going into Saturday's games. These schools will have a big impact on the JSPR because their wins and losses against the top 16 teams will totally change the TUC part of the comparison. Again, this is one of the reasons why JSPR is still so volatile. In another 7-10 days, history shows that there will have been enough games played so that the Top 16 only changes by one or two teams through the remainder of the season.

Wed. Jan. 25 Highlights

Avon Blanks #7 Loomis
#1 KUA Edges #5 Exeter
#8 Salisbury Shuts Out Gunnery

Avon, Conn. -- Sophomore Trevor Zegras (2g,1a) and junior Tyler Madden (1g,2a) led Avon's attack and sophomore goaltender Spencer Knight was perfect, kicking out all 26 shots he faced, as the Winged Beavers topped Loomis 4-0 this afternoon.

Avon came out hard and got on the board just 50 seconds into the game when a Nick Wildgoose shot from the slot broke off the glove -- and dropped in behind -- Loomis goalie Adin Farhat to give the Winged Beavers a quick 1-0 lead. The goal also put a quick end to Farhat's two-game shutout streak.

At the 3:03 mark of the second period sophomore Trevor Zegras made it 2-0 on a wide-angle shot from the right faceoff circle.

Just 1:11 into the third, with Avon on the PP, Zegras struck again on a hard wrister -- this time from the left faceoff circle -- that beat Farhat short side to the top corner. At 8:04, again on the PP, Madden beat Farhat with a high wrister from the right faceoff circle to wrap up the day's scoring.

This was a good, clean, up-and-down prep game between two good teams. The difference? Avon capitalized on their scoring chances and got excellent goaltending. Loomis didn't capitalize on their chances and Farhat had an uncharacteristically bad game.

Avon had a 29-26 edge in shots.

"We played hard today," Avon head coach John Gardner said. "In Monday's debacle (a 2-1 OT loss to Westminster at home) we were outworked and outhustled. But today we moved the puck and did all the little things right. The defensemen did a nice job. Their passes had a purpose.  A couple good PKs helped us too. Plus Zegras had a couple nice snipes."

Avon, which improved to 9-4-3, is at Choate Saturday night. Loomis falls to 9-4-1 and is at Brunswick on Friday and Andover on Saturday.

Last Weekend's Belated Highlights

Last weekend, this typist drove too many miles, saw plenty of hockey, found the one hotel whose wi-fi network was impossible to connect to and... instead of beginning the catch-up process Sunday, went to another game in the afternoon, then drove home to watch the Patriots-Steelers on TV --- and fell asleep with the game on.

So forgive me.

Forgive me because, as always, there were some pretty fine performances, and we want to shine some light on them -- albeit in an abbreviated form -- before the next round of games begins tomorrow.

-- We started out Saturday at Groton and saw a couple of periods of their game against Middlesex. It was a very good day for Groton junior center -- and leading scorer -- Santeri Hartikainen, who had all four goals in his team's 4-0 win over Middlesex.

-- From there, we continued west to Deerfield and watched Choate forward Jack Hoey (4g,1a) figure in all five goals as the Wild Boars topped the Big Green in their rivalry game. This typist was gung-ho to write these games up, but, alas, was let down by modern technology. (Don't worry, USHR will not be going back to its pre-internet days as a Xeroxed newsletter!)

-- Sunday morning, in a driving rain, we headed over to NMH and watched a couple of good goalies, Taft's Andrew Farrier (29/30) and NMH's Big Eric Green (30/32), battle it out. Taft won it 2-1 on a Shea Courtmanche goal with 4 seconds left in the second period.

In other games:

-- Exeter junior Kyle Jadatz (1g,4a) figured in all 5 of his team's goals in a 5-1 win over Hotchkiss.

-- Newly-minted Union recruit Mike Hardman (2g,2a) notched 4 points in Winchendon's 8-6 win over Kents Hill.

-- St. Mark's freshman Sean Farrell has scored half his season's goal total over the last two games. The Harvard recruit had 2 vs. St. George's Saturday, and then addded 4 in St. Mark's 6-2 upset at Tabor on Monday.

-- Dartmouth recruit and Belmont Hill senior Sam Hesler (3g,2a) figured in all five goals in Belmont Hill's 5-2 win at St. Paul's Saturday.

-- Millbrook soph Greg Koutsomitis (2g,4a) and junior Zach Taylor (2g,3a) led the way in a 9-1 win over Hoosac.

-- Canterbury senior Mike Perrone scored the game-winner in OT to upset the visitors from Taft, 3-2.

-- Senior Tyus Watson-Tummings scored in OT to lead Vermont Academy past Académie Saint-Louis, 3-2.

-- On Monday, a Tasso Housakos PPG in OT lifted Westminster to a 2-1 win at Avon Old Farms.

Now, we already mentioned Green and Farrier, so how about some more on goalies?

-- The biggest news on the goaltending front was Peter Negron's 54-save shutout as Kent blanked Salisbury on the road, 4-0. Kent is 4-1-1 in the new year.

-- Loomis's Adin Farhat had a 27-save shutout in a 4-0 win over Westy on Saturday. The next day, Farhat posted a 15-save shutout in a 2-0 Pelicans win over Cushing.

-- Lawrenceville tied up NMH, 3-3 -- and L'ville junior goaltender Karl Szabo's 48 saves had more than a little impact on that outcome. SOG for the game were 51-13 in favor of NMH.

-- Avon sophomore Spencer Knight posted his third shutout of the season in a 3-0 home win over Berkshire.

-- Proctor senior Ville Lassonen (26/26) upset visiting LA, 3-0.

-- Pomfret soph Peyton Durand stopped 38 of 39 shots in a 1-1 tie at Albany Academy. Pomfret is now 10-5-1. Last year, they lost 19.

-- BB&N freshman and '02 birthdate Gavin FitzPatrick (44/48) held Rivers to 4 goals in a 4-1 loss.

-- Holderness senior Logan Bateman (40/42) led his team to a 5-2 win at Brooks.

-- Brewster senior Joe Benedetto kicked out 48 of 52 shots, but still took the loss in a 4-2 decision to New Hampton.

-- Andover PG goalie Kyle Martin (39/41) came up big in a 4-2 win over at Nobles.

-- In his first start of the season, NYA senior Jeremy Thelven (27/27) shut out Worcester Academy, 1-0.

O'Brien Leads Thayer Past Belmont Hill

Belmont, Mass. -- Thayer junior center Jay O'Brien notched a hat trick and added two assists to lead #10 Thayer to a 6-3 win at #8 Belmont Hill this evening. Linemate Casey Carreau (2g,1a) also had a big game, and junior d-man Jason Dobay chipped in with a goal and an assist. Junior Tristan Amonte had a couple of assists as well.

The game started inauspiciously for Thayer as Belmont Hill, charged up by the loud Friday night student section, came out hard and scored just nine seconds in as senior Sam Hesler, off a nice pass from Jonathan Folsom, fired a high wrister past Thayer junior goaltender Jimmy Scannell. Just 1:02 later, at 1:11 of the period, senior Christian O'Neill converted off a nice passing sequence with Max Fields and Mike Armstrong to make it 2-0.

As the period moved along, Thayer, which on Wednesday had also gone down 2-0 in the first couple of minutes before coming back to edge Cushing 4-3, began to reestablish their footing, getting a key goal with 1:30 left in the period when Carreau, off a goalmouth feed from O'Brien, took a shot that deflected off the stick of Belmont Hill goalie Connor Hopkins to make it a one-goal game.

Thayer tied it up 2-2 on a power play goal just 1:12 into the second when O'Brien took a pass from Dobay and fired home a wrister from the left faceoff circle. With 6:27 left in the period, O'Brien struck again with a high top corner wrister to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.

At 3:56 of the third, Belmont Hill tied things up on O'Neill's second goal of the game, a wrister from the slot, assisted by Peter O'Connell.

Five minutes later, at 8:02, Belmont Hill gave up an odd-man rush capped off by Amonte sliding the pack across the top of the crease to Carreau to make it 4-3 and give Thayer a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

A  little over a minute later Thayer stuck the dagger in, O'Brien scoring a power play goal to make it 5-3. Carreau added an empty-netter with 15 seconds to play.

This was a hard-fought game with plenty of up-and-down action. Normally, Belmont Hill plays a very sound team defense. But Thayer, with its quick transitions leading to odd-man rushes, was a handful for Belmont Hill tonight. The Tiger's also had two power play goals to none for Belmont Hill and were pretty lethal moving the puck below the dots -- and finishing. That's something Belmont Hill had a hard time doing once Jimmy Scannell settled into his game. Meanwhile, Connor Hopkins might want to put this one in the rear-view mirror.

"We gave the puck away early," said Thayer coach Tony Amonte afterward. "They are quick, they forecheck hard, and on the big ice they are always a challenge. It took us half a period to adjust. But we didn't panic. We just started chipping away. As the game went on we were able to slow them down a bit, limit turnovers, and get our power play going."

"And Jay O'Brien," Amonte added, "was a beast tonight. He really wanted it. He and Carreau had that extra jump."

Thayer is off until Wednesday, when they host St. Paul's. Belmont Hill, meanwhile, heads to St. Paul's for a road game tomorrow.

The Thayer-Belmont Hill rematch is Friday Feb. 10 (4:00 pm) in Canton.

-- An Andrew Somerville PPG with 1:27 remaining lifted host Tilton to a 5-5 tie with Vermont Academy. Strange game: Tilton got four in the first, Vermont answered with four of their own in the second, and each team had one in third (and, of course, none in OT). Tilton's Callahan Johnson had a three-point afternoon, as did VA's John Peloso and Robbie Ferreira.

-- Junior Kevin Wall had a hat trick, Jacques Bouquot had two goals, and senior goaltender Jonah Capriotti kicked out 21 of 23 shots to lead #8 Salisbury to a 7-4 win over host Westminster. Salisbury had an abysmal first period -- serious bus legs -- and allowed Westy to jump out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals 29 seconds apart. But Salisbury came back with a pair early in the second -- and added five more goals in the third. Jack Flanagan scored on a penalty shot for  Westminster. Salisbury is 8-3-1 now.

-- Senior D Josh Labonte (2g,3a) and PG forward Phil Satin (2g,3a) each had five points in host Pomfret's 6-1 win over Millbrook. Sophomore G Peyton Durand (34/35) earned the win. Pomfret improves to 8-5-0.

-- After a scoreless first period Tabor scored three goals in a four-minute span of the second period to take charge. KUA, on a Chris Konin goal, cut it to 3-2 but host Tabor held on and knocked off the #1 Wildcats. Senior goaltender Jeremie Forget stopped 26 of 28 shots for the big win. Jay Cote, Ed Hannon, and Eric Pedro scored the Seawolves' goals.

-- A goal from senior defenseman Graham Rutledge late in the second period turned out to be the game winner as #9 Exeter edged archrival Andover 4-3 today at Andover. Exeter outshot Andover 37-20.

-- New Hampton bounced back from a 2-0 first period deficit to edge host Hebron 4-3. New Hampton got goals from four different scorers. Senior Waltteri Rannisto had two goals for Hebron. New Hampton improves to 7-7-3.

-- Sophomore Sean Dennehy gave host Choate a 1-0 lead after one, but Taft came back with three straight goals -- from Ryan Colwell, Jeremie Lavallée, and Matteo Mangiardi -- to go ahead 3-1. Choate's Chance Gorman added a third period goal to make it 3-2 but the Wild Boars could get no closer. Senior Andrew Farrier (26/28) earned the win while junior Cal Stewart (35/38) took the loss. The Rhinos improve to 7-3-1.

-- Host Berwick spotted visiting Worcester Academy a 3-0 lead but came roaring back with four unanswered goals -- the last from senior Byron Welch -- to take a 4-3 win.

-- Harrison Roy (1g,3a), Joey Cipollone (2g,1a), and Justin Grillo (3a) led the attack as #4 Loomis, now 7-2-1, celebrated the school's 100th year of hockey with a 5-2 win over Hotchkiss.

Rathbone Returns; Strikes in OT

Brookline, Mass. -- Star Dexter defenseman Jack Rathbone returned to action after a four-week absence due to concussion symptoms, and wasted no time making his presence felt, scoring a PP goal at 1:27 of overtime to lead his team to a 3-2 win over New Hampton tonight.

On the winning goal, which came with New Hampton forward Joe Dunlap in the penalty box due to a rather dubious slashing call, Dexter goalie Aidan Murphy passed the puck up to Rathbone on the far wall. The junior, a Harvard recruit getting a good look from the NHL scouts in the building, used his considerable speed to fly through the New Hampton defense and fire the game-winner stick-side past New Hampton senior goalie Thomas McLarnon.

This was a very good prep hockey game. Dexter scored the game's first goal, a Tommy Giandomenico goal at 3:59 of the first. New Hampton answered in the second on a power play tally by senior Chris Lemay. Dexter went ahead 2-1 on a Danny Shea goal, off a nice pass from John Femia. New Hampton tied it up 2-2 at 2:14 of the third on Lemay's second goal of the night, a quick-release shot high to Murphy's glove side. And that was all the scoring until Rathbone struck for the OT game-winner.

Shots on the game were 38-34 Dexter.

"It's good to have Jack (Rathbone) back," Dexter coach Dan Donato said afterward."I thought we played just OK. The kids had exams this week, so our first practice was yesterday. And that's a mature New Hampton team."

"I thought a key to the game was our goalie. (Murphy) played very well, stopping two key breakaways in the second to keep the game 2-1 us instead of 3-2 them."

New Hampton coach Casey Kesselring is looking for more scoring, as six of his team's seven losses thus far have been by one goal. This was also New Hampton's third 3-2 OT loss on the season.

"It was a good hard-fought game," Kesselring said. "We had chances, but our guys are gripping their sticks too hard. If we can get our lines clicking and just string some wins together we can gain some positive momentum. If we get on a roll and are fortunate enough to reach the playoffs I feel we could be dangerous. But we have to get there first."

Gale Kicks Out 40, Haggerty Scores in OT as Deerfield Upsets Loomis

Deerfield, Mass. -- Deerfield sophomore goaltender Thomas Gale, the MVP of the Flood-Marr Tournament last month, kicked out 40 shots and PG forward Chad Haggerty scored a breakaway goal with 33 seconds remaining in overtime as the Big Green upset #4 Loomis-Chaffee 3-2 tonight.

Loomis got on the board just 24 seconds into the game as Joey Cipollone converted a Justin Grillo goalmouth pass to put the visitors up 1-0. There was no other scoring in the first. Despite the lead, Loomis, having played no games since the Avon Tournament, looked a little rusty and ragged in the first. However, their goalie, junior Patrick Pugliese, was on his game, and kept Deerfield at bay.

Deerfield tied things up 1-1 at the 10:35 mark of the second when Justin Masella banged home the rebound of a Thomas Dale shot. That was the only goal of the second period. Loomis outshot Deerfield by a 15-7 margin, but Gale put on a clinic, as the Loomis forwards swarmed him, firing shots from all over.

Gale was in a zone, coming up with numerous 10-bell saves.

Loomis got to him in the third, however, as center Johnny Barbieri, on the PP, deflected a shot from the right point at 3:22 to give the Pelicans a 2-1 lead. It was the second and final goal Loomis would score on the day.

Deerfield tied it up 2-2 on a great individual effort from PG forward Danny Farr, who beat a couple defenders as he motored wide down the right side, beating Pugliese short side at the 7:05 mark. That was the final goal in regulation, though not for lack of trying: Loomis, with a 13-5 edge in shots in the period, just poured it on Gale,

With about two minutes left, Loomis junior D Andrew Lucas sprung Justin Grillo on a breakaway. Gale came up with the stop of the game.

Overtime was a little less frenetic, and, just as it looked as if a tie was in the cards, Deerfield junior D Bret Pastor sent Haggerty in on the breakaway that would give Big Green the win with just 33 seconds on the clock, as the Deerfield student section and players celebrated.

"We'll take a win any way we can," said Deerfield coach Tim McVaugh. "But Gale stole one for us tonight."

"Also I really liked the way we responded," McVaugh added. "Both times Loomis scored we got it right back. I think that resilience bodes well for the future."

Loomis coach JR Zavisza could only shake his head in wonder, as his team played two dominant periods but left with nothing to show for it.

"Their goalie played out of his mind," he said. "He stole three or four goals."

Final shots on goal showed Loomis with a 42-30 edge.

Deerfield is playing without its top d-man, 6'3" senior tri-captain Justin Marler. He's out with a shoulder separation.

KUA Again #1 in USHR Prep Poll

Kimball Union (15-2-0) is once again #1 in the USHR Prep Poll, as the Wildcats picked up wins in both of their games last week, a 2-1 decision over New Hampton on Wednesday, and a 5-0 blanking of Cushing on Saturday.

Because some teams had no games scheduled for Wednesday -- and many games were snowed out on Saturday -- there was a definite shortage of big games that would have caused large, multiple shifts in the poll.

There are changes, though. For starters, Gunnery and St. Sebastian's -- #9 and #10 respectively last week -- have  been unceremoniously bounced from this week's poll.

Click below and see who's taken their place.

Wed. Jan. 4, 2017 Highlights

-- Roxbury Latin Opens New Rink

Roxbury Latin played their first game at their impressive new rink this afternoon, but couldn't wrap it up with a bow as St. George's senior Toby Almeida scored through a screen at 1:23 of OT to lift the visitors to a 1-0 win.

This was a goalies' game, as both St. George's senior Shane Conlon, a '99, and Roxbury Latin senior Bryan McGrath, a '98, were excellent.

As for the skaters, Roxbury Latin's star is 6'1" LD -- and Providence recruit -- Mike Callahan. He was paired with 8th grader Peter Frates, who is quick, mobile and plays with a lot of assurance for an 8th grader with an October '01 birthdate. You'll be hearing a lot more from him over the years.

Up front, junior Jimmy Duffy was the best forward on either team. He's grown some and played a little more physically than we recall from last season. Duffy has skill, is a strong skater, sees the ice, and had a lot of opportunities but just couldn't bury any of them. A junior and an '00 birthdate, Duffy has the potential to play Div. I down the line. 5'7" sophomore winger Jack Luca was also interesting, but it's too early to say whether he is a D-I or D-III prospect. He's on the small side now, so a lot depends on whether he can grow and fill out some.

St. George's got strong performances from senior F Toby Almeida, who is going to Conn College for lacrosse, LC Gordan Gurnell, a repeat junior from the Conn. high school ranks, and junior D Max Thomson.

As for RL's rink, it's just one facet of the new on-campus Indoor Athletic Facility -- its formal name -- and on Friday Jan. 20th at 7:30 pm will be formally dedicated prior to that night's game vs. Pingree. Roxbury Latin has played its home games at Dexter's Thorndike Rink for 40 years, so the building is a real boon for coach Dave Cataruzolo's program. It's easy to imagine a potential recruit's eyes lighting up as he walks around the spacious, light-filled arena with numerous cathedral-style windows and yards of glass. An impressive weight room looks down on the ice from one corner. There are offices, a reception room with fireplace, a concessions area, a trainer's room, and impressive locker rooms with hardwood stalls. With a balcony on one side and the benches and penalty boxes on the other, it bears a resemblance to the rinks at Belmont Hill and Rivers. The rink is not instantly recognizable as a rink from the outdoors because it is connected to the rest of the athletic facility, which in turn is connected to the school. The long red brick building looks out over the recently re-turfed football fields. As part of the construction, the school has also built new baseball and soccer fields, as well as tennis courts.

***
-- At the Berkshire School this afternoon, a Jack Lloyd
goal with the extra attacker on and :07 on the clock tied things up at 3-3 but the visitors from Millbrook -- in the person of sophomore Jake Gagnon -- scored at 2:42 of OT to give the Mustangs the win. Junior Greg Brassard (22/25) got the win. Millbrook is now 7-3-2 in NEPSIHA play.

-- Matteo Mangiardi (2g,2a) had four points in host Taft's 8-4 win over Brunswick. The Rhinos improve to 5-2-1 in NEPSIHA play.

-- Chris Theodore and Alex Bourhas each had a goal and two assists in Hotchkiss's 5-0 shutout of Lawrenceville.

-- Senior Thomas Dale had two goals in Deerfield's 6-3 win over Pomfret. One goal was an empty-netter and the other came on a penalty shot. Deerfield is 6-3-0 in NEPSIHA play.

-- In a battle between #5 Dexter and #2 Rivers, host Dexter came out on top, 3-2. John Femia's second goal of the game, at 6:28 of the second period, turned out to be the game-winner. But it was controversial, as Rivers, as well as many impartial observers, felt that the play had been whistled dead after a high stick but before the puck crossed the goal line. This was a good, hard-fought game between two teams that could meet again in the post-season.

-- Sophomore G Greg Iverson kicked out 35 shots in Williston's 3-1 win over Canterbury.

-- A Ryan Farley goal with 4:07 to play lifted #6 Thayer to a 3-2 road win at Winchendon. Junior Jimmy Scannell kicked out 25 of 27 shots for the win. It was Winchendon's fourth game in three days. Thayer is now 9-3-0.

-- Kent sophomore goaltender Alex Contey kicked out 43 of 45 shots to lead his team to a 4-2 road win at Gunnery. Senior D Troy Daniels scored the GWG in the third and Kent added an empty-netter for the final margin of victory. Kent's #1 goalie, Peter Negron, has been under the weather, but is expected back at school tomorrow (Thurs.).

-- Senior Rich Steinberg's first goal of the season was a big one, coming in the third period and lifting host Tilton to a 2-1 win over Proctor. Tilton is 9-5-0 in NEPSIHA play.

-- Brendan Schneider and Jericho Petkovich each had two goals and an assist in host Albany Academy's 7-1 win over Portledge.

-- Junior Bobby Murray (1g,2a) had three points as host Exeter topped Brooks, 4-1. Exeter improves to 9-3-0 in NEPSIHA competition.

-- Henry Thrun, Sean Farrell and Mike Nantais each had four points as host St. Mark's crushed Worcester 8-2. In addition, Colby Bailey, Tyler Young, Connor Berry, and Justin Biela each had two points. After losing five straight to start the season, a young St. Mark's team has rebounded with wins in three of its last four games.

-- Derek Muse (3g,1a) and Greg Stohrer (2g,2a) each had four points in Berwick's 7-2 road win at Pingree.

-- Holderness senior goalie Logan Bateman (25 saves) shut out Vermont Academy 3-0. Holderness improves to 8-2-0 vs. NEPSIHA competiton.

-- Nobles got scoring from five different scorers in a 5-1 win at St. Sebastian's. Junior G Matt Lane kicked out 24 shots for the win.

-- Senior Clay Ellerbrock's goal at 9:34 of the third lifted Kents Hill to a 6-5 win over host NYA.

-- Freshman Gunnarwolfe Fontaine (2g,2a) scored a SHG with 1:53 to play to lift Moses Brown to a 4-4 tie at Groton.

KUA Back at #1 in USHR Prep Poll

Kimball Union Academy, just back from winning the Nichols-Belmont Hill Tournament in Buffalo, NY, is now 13-2-0 in NEPSIHA games, and returns to the top spot in this week's USHR Prep Poll. The Wildcats were #1 in our first poll of the season, before being moved out by Loomis in the Dec. 19th poll.

We expect plenty of changes before the end of the season, but the spate of tournament games over the past 2-3 weeks has built up the sample size to a fairly respectable point. We're beginning to see who the stronger teams are. We feel that the top six teams in this week's poll have set themselves apart. The teams in the 7-8-9-10 slots have had good moments and bad moments but could well be in the hunt until the end.
