#3 KUA Edges #4 NMH, 2-1

Gill, Mass. -- KUA, behind a second-period game-winning goal from junior Sullivan Mack and the goaltending of junior Veeti Kohvakka (24/25), wore down a game NMH squad, 2-1, this afternoon at air-conditioned McCollum Arena.

This one was a bit of a textbook win. In the first period, both teams played hard and fairly evenly. In the second, KUA, the deeper team, began to establish its game by taking greater possession time, playing a heavier game, getting to pucks quicker, and making better decisions. Midway through the second, KUA post-grad wing Zach Taylor made a nice pass across the top of the crease and junior wing Paul Dore, at the far post, redirected it past NMH goalie Connor Hasley at 7:17.

Nearly five minutes later, Mack, on what turned out to be the game-winner, took a perfect pass from junior linemate Tomas Mazura and beat Hasley with a high wrister to make it 2-0.

Late in the period, with under a minute left -- 56 seconds, to be precise -- KUA gave up one of those goals coaches hate, as NMH would make it a one-goal game. It came about when senior Jack Quinn was driving down the slot, but had the puck knocked off his stick. It wound up with senior center Devan Tonque, who sent it right back to Quinn for the latter's team-leading 17th goal of the season.

In the third period, with the one-goal lead, KUA did a nice job hemming the Hoggers in their end, staying strong on the puck, and not giving them much in the way of quality scoring chances at the other end. In addition, the Hoggers, in going for that tying goal, had the top line of Quinn, Tongue, and Theo Hembre out there every other shift, while KUA could roll its lines.

For the game, KUA outshot NMH, 28-25.

"The first period was kind of even," said KUA head coach Tim Whitehead. "In the second, we established possession, but then they scored that goal late in the period. They're a good team. We knew they were going to hang around."

"I thought both teams played a hard and clean gaame," added Whitehead, "and both goalies were great."

"We love playing NMH. They play hard, plus a lot of the kids know each other from fall hockey with the GBL Bruins. There's no garbage going on."

NMH head coach Kevin Czepiel said,"I thought the first period was even, but I thought in the second period we were on our heels. We never got in a rhythm. (KUA) competed hard, but our execution was lacking, and KUA was more physical. We were out-battled a bit. That's the dissapointing part for us."

Notes:

-- This typist hit a snow squall on the way back, just as the National Weather Service predicted. White-out conditions. Not fun.

-- Whitehead cited his d-men tonight. "We didn't give up a lot of Grade A chances."

-- KUA's Mack leads his team in scoring (18 goals) and he isn't even on the top PP unit. How often do you see that?

-- KUA is now 19-4-0 in NEPSIHA play, with games coming up this weekend at Holderness (Fri.) and home vs. New Hampton (Sat.). NMH is 14-5-1 and is at Vermont Academy Saturday.

Salisbury #1 in USHR Prep Poll -- Again

Salisbury did lose for the first time in 16 games -- to St. Andrew's College, 5-2, at the MacPherson Tournament, hosted by St. Andrew's at the school's campus in Aurora, Ontario. But that's not enough to knock them off the top of USHR's Weekly Prep Poll.

However, eight of the ten teams shifted positions, and two new teams, both of which had been in the poll before, returned.

There is still time enough for things to change, but we think the top five teams in the poll could be fighting for home ice for the playoffs.

#7 Dexter Ties up #2 Lawrence, 1-1

Groton, Mass. -- In one of the best prep games this correspondent has seen this season, #7 Dexter tied undefeated and #2-ranked Lawrence, 1-1, here today.

"It was a hell of a game," said Dexter head coach Dan Donato. "As a fan, it was a great, great high school game. Both teams have lots of talent and speed and a good transition game."

Robbie Barker, LA's head coach, echoed Donato's sentiments. "It was a back-and-forth game -- certainly exciting. The kids played really hard against a strong, talented team."

LA came out of the gate hard, but it was Dexter getting on the board first, when John Farinacci took a pass from defenseman Bobby Pearl, entered LA's end with speed, and unleashed a slapshot from the top of the right faceoff circle that whistled past Spartans senior goaltender Ian Graiff high to the far side at the 3:29 mark.

Lawrence outshot Dexter, 11-7, in the first, but it wasn't until there was 6:32 left in the period before the home team got on the board. On a nice goal, too, as Lawrence RW Tyler Young made a great pass across the low slot to Sam Colangelo, who had plenty of net to shoot at, and didn't miss. That made it 1-1. There would be no more scoring for the rest of the day, but there were some close chances.

After Lawrence had killed a penalty in the second, the Spartans' Graiff made a nice stop on Dexter's Aidan Connolly point-blank shot from the front of the net. Later in the period, LA's Young clanged one off the post. In OT, Dexter poured on the pressure. Farinacci hit a post, and Graiff stopped him on a good opportunity with about 30 seconds left.

And that was it, a 1-1 tie. It looked to us like a W for both teams.

There was also no nonsense to the game. All four of the game's penalties were called on LA, and they killed each one successfully. Both teams played the game right. There was no tedious extracurricular pushing and shoving after the whistle.

The final shots favored Dexter, 31-24. Both goalies were excellent. Graiff was forced to come up with some big saves. Mullahy didn't have particularly tough chances, but his positioning is so strong that he can make big saves look routine at times.

Notes:

There were a lot of NHL scouts at the game, which featured four players -- Dexter's Farinacci and Mullahy, and LA's Braden Doyle and Young -- from Central Scouting's recently released Midterm Rankings.

With Farinacci back in action and centering Dexter's top line, Donato has junior Chase McInnis and 6'1" sophomore Doug Grimes as his wings. Barker had Ethan Bastien centering Connor Sweeney and Sam Colangelo; and David Sacco centering Tyler Young and Riley Duran.

LA is now 10-0-6, and leads the league in ties, passing Trinity-Pawling, Belmont Hill, and Hotchkiss, each with 5. Last year, Kent finished the season with 7. LA has plenty of time to pass them. They're certainly on pace to do so.

Prep Highlights of Sat. Jan. 26th
-- Benchich Caps #10 Westy's Comeback in OT
-- Quinn, Hasley Lead #6 Hoggers Past #4 Tilton
-- Berkshire Wins on Last-Second Goal from Whitney
-- Middlesex G Joe Stanizzi Stops 52, Loses to Rivers, 2-1
-- Menes, Beran Lead SPS Comeback
-- Wilder Shuts Out #3 Deerfield

@ Berkshire 4, Delbarton 3
-- A last-second goal -- literally, at 17:59 -- from junior Jack Whitney, assisted by junior F Aidan Thompson and senior D Aidan Metcalfe gave Berkshire the win. Whitney (2g) and Thompson (3a) were the leading scorers for the Bears. Senior F Michael Balzarotti (1g,2a) figured in all of Delbarton's goals. In case you were wondering -- and we hope you weren't -- there are 11 Aidans in prep hockey this season.

@ Williston 6, Brunswick 3 -- Williston goal goals from 6 different scorers today. PG goaltender Kyler Breland (22/24) earned the win. Williston has won 3 straight.

#10 Westminster 4 @ Kent 3 (OT) -- An OT goal from junior Darion Benchich -- the first goal of his prep career -- lifted Westy, which was trailing 3-0 late in the second period, to its 5th straight win.

@ Rivers 2, Middlesex 1 -- A third-period goal by senior F John Kantaros broke the 1-1 tie. Rivers outshot their guests, 54-15. Middlesex senior Joe Stanizzi (52/54) was the hard-luck loser -- and not for the first time -- in this one. Stanizzi has the second-highest save % in prep hockey. His numbers have gotten better in each of his 3 years at Middlesex.

#8 Exeter 3 @ Cushing 1 -- Senior F Garrett Foster scored the GWG in the 2nd and senior F Andrew Seaman added an insurance goal in the third. Somehow, Exeter PG defenseman PJ Garrett got 4 penalties in the 3rd -- two minors, a major, and a misconduct. Junior Ryan Welch (33/34) earned the win; Joe Sharib (18/21) took the loss.

St. Paul's 4 @ Belmont Hill 2 -- SPS scored 3 consecutive third-period goals to overcome a 2-1 deficit. Senior Julien Menes (2g,1a)  scored the game-tying goal and the game-winner for the Pelicans. Senior G Andy Beran came up huge (41/43). Beran leads all prep goalies with a .945 save percentage. SPS (13-5-1) has won 4 in a row.

New Hampton 4 @ Brewster 2 -- The Huskies scored 4 straight goals in the 3rd to come from behind. Juniors Marcus Joughin (1g,2a) and Isaac MacLeod (2g) led the way,

St. Mark's 7 @ Tabor 1 -- Sophomore D Ian Moore (5a), junior F Danny Ciccarello (2g,2a), junior D Tucker Hartmann (1g,3a), and senior F Nolan Moore (2g,1a) led the Lions' attack. Senior G Alex Cardonick (27/28) got the win.

@ Hotchkiss 1, #3 Deerfield 0 -- In the first period, Bearcats PG forward Alex Mozian scored the game's only goal. This was a goalie's battle. Hotchkiss junior Henry Wilder was perfect (29/29) and Deerfield senior Alex Gale (25/26) was close to perfect.

@ Andover 5, Loomis Chaffee 2 -- Andover got goals from 5 different scorers and junior Charlie Archer kicked out 34 of 36 for the win. Since a 3-game losing streak, Big Blue has bounced back with 3 wins in a row.

@ Brooks 2, Governor's 2 -- On the strength of two goals from junior F Mitch McGinn, Gov's took a 2-0 lead early in the 2nd. But Brooks bounced back with goals from soph Michael Bencivengo and senior Colin Voloshin to escape with a tie. The goaltenders -- Govs' junior Drake Wheelden (28/30) and Brooks' senior Spencer Pierce (26/28) -- both gave their teams a chance to win it.

@ NYA 7, Portsmouth Abbey 1 -- Junior forwards Jared Buckner (2g,1a) and Damon Dulac (1g,2a) led NYA's attack.

#6 NMH 3 @ #4 Tilton 1 -- In a big game between top 10 teams the visitors from NMH, led by 2 goals from senior F Jack Quinn, topped Tilton. NMH junior goalie Connor Hasley (33/34) earned the win. The Hoggers are 7-0-1 in their last 8.

Trinity-Pawling 4 @ Taft 3 -- T-P held a 4-1 lead with less than 8 minutes to go, then Taft senior Dennis Franklin scored a pair to cut it to 4-3. But that was as close as the Rhinos could get.

Groton 5 @ Roxbury Latin 0 -- Groton got goals from 5 different scorers to win its 9th consecutive game and improve to 12-5-2.

@ Canterbury 1, Pomfret 0 -- A first-period goal from senior Martin McDonald was the only goal the Saints needed today to put an end to their 13-game losing streak. Senior Connor Cherry (31 saves) picked up the shutout. Pomfret senior Peyton Durand (12/13) took the loss.

Avon Old Farms 7 @ Choate 2 -- Junior forwards Nick Cyprian (1g,2a), Timur Alishlavov (1g,1a), and Tabor Heaslip (2a), and sophomore forwards Tyler Boucher (2g) and Timothy Heinke (1g,1a)  led the Winged Beavers' attack. Avon outshot Choate, 30-18.  Sophomore G Connor Callaghan (16/18) got the win.

#5 KUA Blanks #8 Exeter

Meriden, NH --  #5 KUA, behind the shut out goaltending of junior Zach Paputsakis (20 saves) and a pair of second period goals, blanked #8 Exeter, 2-0, here today.

The first period was a feeling-out frame -- a good pace, but not much happening. KUA hit a post and Exeter's Michael Pitts was stopped by Paputsakis on a breakaway.

By the midway point of the second period, KUA began to create more scoring opportunities, but Exeter junior G Ryan Welch was able to handle everything. KUA went ahead at 12:23 of the period, capitalizing on a defensive mistake when junior D Jacob Matthews pinched at an inopportune time, leaving PG defender PJ Garrett flat-footed in the neutral zone. Speedy Wildcats junior F Sullivan Mack blew by him, breaking in alone and beating Welch to make it 1-0.

Less than three minutes later, KUA made it 2-0 on the PP, with Tomas Mazura moving it to Jack Clamer who passed it to Teddy Griffin at the left point. Griffin's shot was tipped home by junior Brian Carrabes to make it 2-0.

There was no scoring in the third. KUA has now won 11 of 12 and heads to #4 Tilton on Friday. In the only other meeting this season between the two teams, on Dec. 8th, Tilton edged KUA, 2-1.

"It was a good hockey game," said KUA head coach Tim Whitehead. "From a fan's point of view it might not have been exciting -- there weren't a ton of chances. Usually our games with them are like 6-4 or something."

"Otherwise, we played well defensively at both ends, and our mistakes didn't wind up in the back of the net. We wanted to bring our best defensive game. I also thought this was Paputsakis's best game. He was very controlled."

Exeter head coach Dana Barbin thought his charges played a good road game. "But you can't win if you don't score. They scored and we didn't. Their PP scored, and our's didn't."

"KUA is a good team. They played well."

Notes:

Whitehead said he felt that Senior F/D Kyle Penney, a Cornell recruit, has been his MVP so far. Penney, who was a forward until the middle of last season, moved back to D to fill a need and has played valuable minutes, contributing offensively and defensively while logging a ton of ice time. Sounds like a Mike Schafer kind of guy to us.

Injuries: Senior D Christian Felton was out for KUA, and sophomore F Tommy Gannon was out for Exeter.

Again, Salisbury #1 in USHR Prep Poll

Elsewhere in the poll, there's plenty of activity as teams have been shuffled around -- and two that were in last week's poll have gotten the golden boot.

Enjoy!

Carso, Archer Lead #4 Andover Past #2 Tilton

Andover, Mass. --  A Mac Carso goal at 13:49 of the third period capped off the Big Blue's comeback from a 2-0 first-period deficit as #4 Andover outlasted #2 Tilton here this afternoon.

On the winning goal, Thomas Manty took a solid hit from a Tilton defender at the top of the left faceoff circle, but rolled off, kept his feet moving, and got the puck to Carso, who cut in front and stuffed it short side on Tilton PG goaltender Owen Cuddyer.

It was the second goal of the game for the Manty-Christian Powers-Carso line, as the trio also started the comeback just 23 seconds into the second period, with Powers winning the opening draw and getting it to Carso, who moved it to Manty. And, just like that, Andover, which had given up a pair of powerplay goals in the first period, both low, hard pinpoint shots off the stick of the Rams' lanky junior D Jagger Benson, was back in the game.

Andover got the tying goal at 9:21 of the second when senior Jonathan Assayag, flying down the right side, unleashed a shot that found daylight short side.

That set up the third, and the hero here was Andover junior G Charlie Archer, who appeared to get stronger period-by-period, and repeatedly stoned Tilton's relentless attack in the third. Archer would finish with 35 saves, while Cuddyer finished with 17.

The game was a gut-check for Andover, which suffered a raft of injuries in Monday's highly physical 6-6 tie vs. Proctor that put F Tyler Little, and d-men Victor Malzahn and Carter Giampietro out of action. Little, a Middlebury commit, is out for the season. On top of all that, today a fourth player went down, as yet another defenseman, junior Ray Galasso, had to leave the game after a first period ankle injury. Jacob Lapp, a JV defender playing his first varsity game, and Matt Veneri, a forward who moved back, helped round out a depleted group of blueliners.

"I'm extremely proud of the way the team played,"Andover coach Paul Tortorella said. "We had two new D, but we pulled together and met the challenge of facing a very good team. Part of being a team is sticking to a game plan, and that is what they did today."

"Archer played a magnificent game," Tortorella added. "He controlled the pace."

Tilton coach Brooks McQuade also had words of praise for Archer. "He settled in and created stability for them, and that's what you need."

"It was a good back-and-forth game,"McQuade added. "At the end of the day, they worked hard and had fight. It's an unforgiving league."

McQuade, though, was not happy seeing the lead slip away. "We'll bounce back," he said, "but we're angry. My kids are angry. My assistant coach is angry. I'm angry."

"We're a cometitive group."

Tilton (10-2-0) hosts Vermont Academy on Saturday at 3:30 pm, while Andover (9-2-1) hosts archrival Exeter at 5:30 pm.

Salisbury Remains #1 in New USHR Poll

After a 2-2 start, Salisbury has now won eight in a row and remains in the top spot in this week's USHR Poll.

Beyond that, there is a lot of volatility in this week's poll, with all remaining teams changing positions. In addition, three teams in the last poll are on the outs this time around. Those teams are Exeter (1-2-1 over its last four), Dexter (2-1-2 over its last five), and Nobles (2-4-1 over its last five).

That, of course, means there are three new teams have entered our Top 10 this time around. See who they are .

Tilton Rolls into Second Half

Milton, Mass. -- As of this morning, this reporter had seen all of the top teams in prep hockey, with one notable omission: Tilton. That's now been taken care of.

Tilton moved to 9-1-0 with a decisive 8-3 win over Milton here this afternoon. Junior center James Cates had two goals and two assists for the Rams, who got scoring from all four lines, outshooting Milton, 52-15.

This is a good team, with an empasis on 'team.' It wouldn't surprise us in the least if they reach the Elite 8 this season.

"They play fast, they're quick, skilled, have mobile D, are disciplined and work hard," said Milton coach Paul Cannata. "You can see why they have had success."

Tilton lacks name players, but have shown they can beat strong teams -- such as defending prep champion KUA. They keep their feet moving, move the puck quickly and efficiently, and don't let up. They are tough to play against.

"There's a lot of buy-in from the kids," said Tilton coach Brooks McQuade, who has spent the last several years working towards a team like this.

"They are committed to helping each other on and off the ice," McQuade added. "Today they executed the game plan, and didn't veer away from playing disciplined hockey. They didn't just wing it and hope to be lucky. They stuck with the plan."

In the middle of the first period, Cuddyer stopped a Milton breakaway and, shortly afterward, lanky junior RD Brett Lockhart scored on a wrister from the blue line. A couple of minutes later in the period, Cates scored to make it 2-0, and, when Milton took a penalty late in the period, junior Tae Lee, from Seoul, South Korea, took advantage, scoring with nine seconds left on the clock to put the Rams up, 3-0.

Fifty-six seconds into the second, Cates, an Anaheim native, scored off a beautiful pass from junior Quebec native Jack Seymour to make it 4-0. Those two were a force all day.

Milton came back with goals from sophomore Max Andrade -- a short-handed breakaway -- and junior Shane O'Sullivan, a powerplay goal on a rebound of a Quinton Fox shot. That made it 4-2, but Milton took another penalty, and once again got burned, as Seymour scored on a wrister from the top of the right faceoff circle to make it a three-goal game again. Senior Brendan Sjostedt scored to make it 6-2, at which point Milton goalie Erik Voloshin was lifted for sopohomore Chris DeMers. A couple minutes later Tilton PG Ryan Hannigan, the third member of the Cates line, found himself alone in front, and made it 7-2 -- and that's how the second period ended.

By then the game was far out of reach for the Mustangs. Early in the third, the teams traded goals, with Jeffrey Lee scoring for Milton, and Jack Mitchell for Tilton.

"We took a bad penalty at the end of the first that made it 3-0," said Cannata. "Going forward, a lot of lessons to be learned."

In additon to Cates's four-point day, three other Rams -- Lockhart, Lee, and Seymour -- each finished with a goal and two asssists.

Tilton hosts Worcester Academy Sunday, and then travels to Andover on Wednesday.

Prep hockey recaps for Saturday, January 5, 2019

-- Brewster stuns Cushing
-- Avon's top line too much for Rhinos
-- Sinson, Beran lead SPS past Exeter

@ St. Sebastian's 2, Belmont Hill 1 -- A third-period SHG from junior Liam Devlin held up as the GWG. Junior goaltender Luke Garrity (24/25) earned the win; sophomore Michael Hauswirth (26/28) was the hard-luck loser. Seb's, now 10-3-0 overall, has won eight of nine.

@ Dexter 6, St. Mark's 0 -- Juniors Jack Dempsey (2g,1a), Ben Raymond (2g), and D John Fusco (1g,1a) led Dexter's attack. Senior Derek Mullahy (17/17) picked up his fourth shutout of the season.

Wyoming Seminary 5 @ Portsmouth Abbey 3 --  Senior Dalton Karl scored two goals for Wyoming, and soph Christophe Beluse (15/17) got the win in net. Freshman John Hoins scored two for PA.

@ St. Paul's 3, Exeter 1 -- Senior Eric Sinson scored two goals and classsmate Andy Beran (1.94/.947 on the season) kicked out 41 of 42 for the win. Exeter junior Ryan Welch (29/32) took the loss.  SPS has won four in a row and five of its last six to improved to 8-3-1. Exeter is going the other way, with a 1-3-1 record over its last five games.

@ Avon Old Farms 6, Taft 3 -- Junior Tabor Heaslip (1g,3a), senior Stefan Miklakos (1g,3a), and sophomore Tyler Boucher (hat trick) were on their game today. Senior Finn Walker had a pair of goals for the Rhinos. Avon senior G Alex Aslanidis (34/37) earned the win; Taft PG Thomas McAleer (40/44) was tagged with the loss. It was essentially a one-goal game, as Avon's last two goals were empty-netters. Avon is 7-1-1 since a season-opening loss.

@ Gunnery 5, Winchendon 2 -- Gunnery got goals from five different scorers and junior goaltender Carmine Andranovich kicked out 23 of 25 shots for the win. Gunnery is 9-0-1 over its last ten.

Berkshire 5 @ Williston 3 -- Berkshire got goals from five different scorers. Senior Cam Mariani had two of Williston's goals.

@ Governor's 2, New Hampton 1 -- Gov's freshman Ian Olenik's PPG midway through the third held up as the GWG.

@ St. George's 4, Pomfret 1 -- Senior Gianni Rodriguez (44/45) came up big in the Dragons' net, and soph B. Jenkinson (2g,2a) led the attack. Pomfret had a 45-23 edge in shots.

Brooks 3 @ Groton 2 (OT) -- A Charlie Alcorn overtime goal lifted Brooks to the road win. Senior Spencer Pierce (42/44) came up with a big game for Brooks.

@ Rivers 2, Proctor 1 -- A Phil Tresca third-period PPG gave the hosts the win. Freshman goaltender Connor Sullivan (15/16) earned the win; Hornets junior Cole Chingras (19/21) took the loss.

Salisbury 7 @ Deerfield 5 -- A game that was 3-3 after two turned into a shootout in the third. Junior forwards Justin Hryckowian (4g,1a), Lucas Mercuri (4a), and Nick Capone (1g,2a) were Salisbury's top guns. For the Big Green, seniors Michael Holland (3g,1a) and Tomas Zourikian (3a) led the way. The goalies -- seniors Thomas Gale (39/45) and Jared Levine (20/25) -- struggled. Nonetheless, Salisbury (10-2-0) still came away with its eighth consecutive win.

Hotchkiss 5 @ Millbrook 1 -- Junior Henry Wilder kicked out 27 of 28 shots and senior Jordan Ehrensperger scored two goals. Wilder is 1.77 and .936 on the season.

Brewster Academy 6 @ Cushing 2 -- Brewster PG goaltender Jack McGee kicked out 39 of 41 shots and senior Niclas Rosenberg, with a goal and three assists, led the way as Brewster went into Cushing's building and picked up an upset win. Brewster entered the game with a nine-game losing streak, while the Penguins were carrying a five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1). Cushing had not allowed more than four goals in a game this season. Junior Connor Wood scored both Cushing goals.

Kent 5 @ Loomis 2 -- Senior D Ian Pierce (1g,2a) and junior F Dane Dowiak (2g) led the Kent offense, and senior G Alex Contey (22/24) earned the win. After starting its season with a five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1), Loomis has lost four of its last five.

Kents Hill 5 @ Pingree 1 -- PG Mike Macchioni scored two goals and junior goaltender Max Macchioni kicked out 25 of 26 shots for the win. Kents Hill is 3-1-2 over its last six.

School's in for Winter

Wednesday was a good day for prep hockey, at least in Eastern Mass. St. Paul's, which reached the finals at the Avon Tournament, went all the way this time and won the Tabor Tournament, putting holiday tournaments to bed until next Christmas. There were also a couple of compelling prep games around Boston. And then it was time to watch the World Juniors on TV. Both Sweden and Canada are out, done, the latter suffering a 2-1 OT loss to Finland, a game they led until the final minute. It was the first time in the tournament's history that Canada failed to medal while hosting, and they've hosted 13 times. If only for the excrutiating way it ended, it has to be the most devastating loss the Canadians have suffered. Reading Canadian newspapers tomorrow should be interesting. Expect lots of gnashing of teeth.

Here at home, we stopped in first at St. Sebastian's, where the Arrows edged Nobles, 3-2, on a Liam Connors third-period powerplay goal. (Quite appropriate, as all three Seb's goals today were scored by a different Liam -- Liam Gorman in the first, Liam Devlin in the second, and Liam Connors in the third.)

This was a very physical, up-tempo game in which both teams went at each other hard. Definitely one of the better prep games this typist has seen this season, and possibly the best. The only down note for Arrows' fans was the departure of Liam Gorman, a BU recruit and the team's leading goal scorer. Gorman, racing for the puck, hit the end boards behind the Nobles' net midway through the second period, with his right shoulder taking the brunt of the impact. He immediately skated to the bench and was later seen with his arm in a sling.

This year's St. Sebastian's team is very good -- highly skilled, fun to watch, but young, with just a few seniors, and four '03 freshmen -- defenseman Will Elias and forwards Jack Hughes, Tim Delay, and Brendan Gorman -- skating a regular shift. We've seen young teams this year, like Rivers, but we don't think we've seen that many '03 freshmen. And they can all play. Junior D Jayden Struble was terrific, even if he does skate the puck into trouble at times.

Nobles has senior wing Ryan Stevens back from injury, and, given that he has been out four weeks, the Yale recruit looked very good. Seb's kept Nobles top line -- Stevens on one wing, Jack Cronin on the other, and Casey Severo at center -- off the board, which was a key to the game. Nobles' '03 freshman, Aidan Lyons, was excellent. Both teams' goalies -- Nobles junior Marc Smith (33 saves) and Seb's junior Luke Garrity (18 saves) -- had to be good, and they were.

After the game, this scribe headed over to Dexter for the Rivers-Dexter tilt, a 2-2 tie. Both teams came into the game with two days of rest after playing four tournament games over the weekend. The game lacked the energy and physicality of the Seb's-Nobles game, but it was a tight contest, with up-and-down action and both teams answering each other's tallies. After Rivers took a 2-1 third period lead on a Matt Cormier goal, Dexter junior Wes Gierkink tied it up at 2-2 with a bar-down shot from about 15 feet out.

Dexter is still without top center John Farinacci, who hasn't played since the first week of December, and, in the Cushing Tournament, Dexter lost junior forward John McElaney, who broke his wrist and is out for eight weeks. So goals have been hard to come by lately. Others have had to step up. 6'2" sophomore Vincent Gould was very much in the center of things today, so was junior Ben Raymond, and Gierkink certainly made an impression with his game-tying goal. We could name others. Dexter has the depth, defense, and goaltending to stay in games despite being without their top forward.

Both goalies were very good. We expect Dexter senior Derek Mullahy (25 saves) to be good every time out, but Rivers' freshman goaltender Connor Sullivan (23 saves), a November '03 birthdate from Westborough, is already good-sized and still has growing to do. He was very good today, and is definitely someone to keep an eye on.
