Holiday Tournament Guide Ready

The 2024-25 Holiday Tournament Guide is complete. Just click on the link at the top of this page.

This is a handy thing to have on that third weekend in December, and then on into the New Year. We just print out a copy and carry it with us. By January it looks like something a crazed mongoose ate for lunch.

We've been doing these Holiday Guides for a while now. The initial inspiration for the guide sprang from a story told us by an assistant coach at a Div. I college out west. One year, he had the Lawrence/Groton Tournament on his list of stops. He saw Lawrence, Mass. on the map, figured the Lawrence Academy rink must be there, and headed off in his rental car. Getting off Route 495 at the Lawrence exit, he went up over a small bridge, and there, below and to the right, he spied the Valley Forum and its dimly lit parking lot. He squeezed into a spot, grabbed his notebook, headed inside... and found a pee-wee game in full tilt.

Someone pointed him in the right direction. Of course, this was before Google Maps. And probably before Google itself.

Austin Prep 3 @ Wilbraham & Monson 1 --
At the Albany Academy Tournament, juniors Jackson Guy and Ayden Badikian and senior Cameron Morrow each scored a goal. AP outshot W&M 49-15. Cougars junior netminder Liam Burke stopped 14 of the 15 shots sent his way.

Portsmouth Abbey 1, Hebron 0 (Forfeit)

@ Albany Academy 3, Somang Prep 0 -- At the Albany Academy Tournament, Cadets' PG Aiden Mumm scored on a penalty shot two minutes into the game and Albany Academy never looked back. Juniors Oliver Tellier and Mason Keramidas also scored — their tallies were separated by just 84 seconds of game time, but spanned the first intermission. In net, PG Silas Stanek-Streed picked up the win with a 13-save shutout.

@ Belmont Hill 5, Lawrence Academy 1 -- Lawrence struck first -- on a PPG from senior Laz Giardina in the first period — but the final five goals all belonged to Bel Hill. Sextants' sophomore Harry Lavoie scored twice, while Jake Tavares, Michael Sullivan, and Matthew Carorlan each added a goal and a helper.

@ Brunswick 5, Westminster 1 -- ’Wick senior Oliver Czaja notched a hat trick, with each goal leg assisted by sophomore linemate Keegan Kazan as the Bruins (5-0-1) extended their season-opening unbeaten streak. Senior Tucker Spiess, a Princeton lacrosse recruit, picked up a goal, while Joe Salandra added an empty-netter. Between the pipes, Brunswick junior Dylan Lee-Stack (23/24) starred in the win, while his counterpart, junior Jack Fitchthorn, went (30/34) in the loss for the Martlets (1-2-0).

@ Rivers 7, Groton 4 -- A stretch of six straight goals between the midpoints of the first and second periods lifted Rivers (3-2-0) back above .500. Red Wings junior Justin Graf (1g,3a) led the way, while the duo of freshmen Finn Sears (2g,1a) and Carter Meyer (1g,2a) -- who already spent a full varsity season together as eighth-graders -- each added three points. So too did Zebras senior Zach Baker (1g,2a) and junior Owen Cronan (1g,2a). In goal, Rivers frosh Will Torres (15/19) got the win.

Brooks 4 @ St. Mark's 4 -- Brooks senior captain Brendan Peck scored twice in the final three minutes — the latter with 43 seconds remaining in regulation -- to complete a hat trick and force overtime, but the extra period wasn't enough to determine a winner. Earlier, before Peck's heroics, St. Mark's (4-1-1) had surged ahead with goals from sophomores Will Manchuso and Cam MacPherson, each of whom assisted on the other's score. Senior goalie Cassidy Kittredge (20/24) shouldered the loss for the Lions (2-1-1).

Tabor 3 @ North Yarmouth Academy 0 -- Despite outshooting NYA 43-15 for the game, Tabor, try as it might, couldn't crack Panthers' senior netminder Vincent Ouellet (40/43) for most of the game. Finally, in the third period, the Seawolves exploded for three goals in a seven-minute span to earn the win. Tabor junior d-man Marcello Martinelli paced his team with a goal and a helper, while goalie Owen Byers picked up a 15-save shutout in net.

Holderness 7 @ Vermont Academy 1 -- Holderness sophomore Henry Colbert scored twice and junior teammate Viktor Samal added a goal and two helpers in the Bulls' (4-1-0) dismantling of Vermont Academy (1-6-0). All told, 13 Holderness skaters registered at least a point, while VA's lone score, a PPG by junior Alex Reed, was assisted by Aiden Ayojiak and Levi Jones in the third. In net, sophomore Henry Li (5/5) and junior Mark Bierwirth (9/10) split the win, while Wildcats' senior Declan Ginty did well to save 59 of Holderness' 66 shots on goal.

@ Kimball Union 6, Brewster 0 -- Wildcats' seniors Mickael Tissier (2g1a) and CJ Watroba (1g,2a), a Merrimack College commit, plus junior Xander Boutillier (3a) each tallied three points in a KUA (7-0-1) drubbing of Brewster (0-5-0). The Wildcats outshot the Bobcats, 59 to 7. Brewster senior goalie Joey Pearl made 53 stops in the loss.

@ Avon Old Farms 4, Trinity-Pawling 1 -- T-P (1-2-0) took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission after Andrew Migliore's PPG 13 minutes in, but Avon (3-1-0) responded with two goals in the second to take the lead and two more in the third -- both courtesy of Loomis transfer Indiana Grossbard -- to ice the win. In the blue paint, AOF senior Michael Heinke (34/35) was the winner, while Pride senior Ondrej Matousek (34/37) took the loss.

@ Nobles 7, Berwick 0 -- Nobles' MacAusland brothers scored three times in the first period -- senior Ted the first and junior Billy the next two -- to give his team a lead they never relinquished. In the second, senior Kyle O'Leary scored twice, including a shorty. In net, Justin Lee (16/16) picked up a shutout win, while Berwick's DJ Patriss (30/37) took the loss.

@ New Hampton 3, Andover 2 (OT) -- New Hampton post-grad Luke Gerardi scored the OT game-winner with 39 seconds left in the extra frame to lift the Huskies (1-4-0) to an upset of Andover (3-1-1). Earlier, in the opening stages of the third, NH senior Jack Mombouquette scored the goal that eventually sent the game into OT. The Big Blue's goals came from sophomore Kieran McIntosh and senior Grayden Robertson-Palmer.

Governor's 6 @ Milton 2 -- Senior teammates Eli Heinze and Ian Crowley each scored a goal and added two assists to pace Gov's to its third win in four games. In total, five visitors tallied multiple points. Milton junior Brody Sharpe logged a goal and a helper, but the Mustangs (0-4-0) dropped their 12th game in 16 tries, dating back to last season. Zach Ericson (26/28), Gov's senior goalie, earned the win.

@ Berkshire 5, Lawrenceville 2 -- Berkshire sophomore Jonah Rainisch scored twice and teammates Josh Williams and Matt Lacombe added two assists as the Bears (5-0-0) remained undefeated. Lawrenceville (1-4-0) was paced by senior Shane Sullivan (1g,1a).

@ Loomis Chaffee 1, Canterbury 1 (OT) -- Just over five minutes after Canterbury junior Parker Farnham broke a 43-minute stalemate with a third period goal, Loomis senior Graham Wiggenhauser potted his first career goal to send the game to OT, where neither side prevailed. It was a goalie battle to the end, with Loomis senior Liam Joyce (20/21) and Canterbury junior Cody Hew (33/34) dueling all the way through.

@ Deerfield 3, Choate 1 -- Big Green senior Justin Tavares broke a 1-1 tie nine minutes into the second with his second goal of the day, and that tally held up as the game-winner. His teammate, Ben Paterson, added an ENG in the final minute. Deerfield (3-0-0) got a strong showing in net from Elliot Lennon (19/20), while Choate (2-1-0) junior Jacob Saldanha (38/40) took the tough-luck loss.

@ Kent 4, Salisbury 2 -- Salisbury (2-1-1) had a 46-27 shot advantage for the game, but took the loss. A three-goal third period surge, highlighted by Dartmouth recruit Stefano Pietrantonio's two goals, propelled Kent (4-2-0) to its second straight win. Salisbury's goals came from seniors Owen Knights and Connor Davis, a Northeastern commit. Kent junior Jacoby Weiner (44/46) dazzled in the win, while Salisbury's Steven Luciano (24/27) took the loss.

Hoosac 2 @ Wyoming Seminary 1 (SO) -- At the Albany Academy Tournament, a pair of powerplay goals -- from Wyoming junior Heli Deseve in the first and Hoosac post-grad Jack Browing in the second -- were enough to force OT, where the Owls secured the win on senior Max Delage's shootout score. Jackson Green (23/24) was the winner in net.

Exeter 3, St. Sebastian's 1 -- Exeter (3-4-1) took the lead on post-grad Brendan St. Peter's first-period strike, then scored twice more in the third period. The lone goal for Seb's (2-2-0), from senior Brendan Keaveny with five minutes left, was a case of too little too late. Each team took 28 shots, but Exeter junior Lucas Mesika saved 27 while Seb's sophomore Tommy Saulnier stopped 25 in the loss.

Millbrook 7 @ Northfield Mt. Hermon 5 -- Millbrook (5-1-0) got a hat trick from senior David Ambuhl, plus goals from three others to outlast NMH (2-5-0). The Hoggers got their five scores from five different goal-scorers. In a goalie's nightmare of a game, junior Dean Repaci (22/27) earned the win between the pipes for the Mustangs. NMH senior Luke Laurino (25/31) was charged with the loss.

@ Cushing 7, Hill 0 -- The Penguins (4-2-0) got a pair of goals from three different skaters -- senior Max Dineen, senior Eric Lund, and sophomore Joseph Covelluzzi -- en route to a pounding of Hill in Ashburnham. In net, Cushing senior Zach White, the regular backup, needed just seven saves for the shutout in his first start of the year. Hill senior Troy Wright (33/40) got the loss.

Frederick Gunn 6 @ Williston Northampton 2 -- Behind six different goal scorers and three-point days from seniors Matthew Nacinovich (1g,2a) and Will Jackson (3a), Gunn (3-1-1) took it to Williston (2-3-0) on the road. Senior goalie Collin Logan (25/27) was solid in net for the Highlanders. Williston senior Zack Tremblay (13/19) had a rough go in the loss.

Taft Senior G Brady Morris Sparkles in 2-2 Tie at Salisbury
Taft senior goaltender Brady Morris came up big for the Rhinos, kicking out 42 of 44 shots to enable the Rhinos to eke out a 2-2 tie in a season-opening game at Salisbury Wednesday.

Taft came out blazing in the first -- "a tactic" Taft coach Ryan Shannon noted afterward, with a wry smile -- taking a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals a minute apart midway through the period. On the first, senior F Matt Lemay banged home a pass out from behind the goal. On the second, senior D Theo Wiseman, seeing a scrum in front pinched, found the puck on his stick, and didn't miss, firing a shot past Salisbury senior goaltender Steven Luciano. Taft junior wing Jason Rothstein, a  Harvard commit who was buzzing all period, had assists on both goals.

The second period was entirely different as Salisbury came out skating, playing with a purpose missing in the first. And it paid off quickly, as senior Connor Davis, a Northeastern commit, banged home a rebound goal to cut Taft's lead to one goal. Senior Jake Novak had the assist. The Scarlet Knights kept on coming, but that was it for the second.

Salisbury continued the pressure in the third, hunting that tying goal. Taft made them work, playing a strong team defensive game, blocking shots and putting up a wall at their blue line to limit odd-man rushes. But with 5:04 remaining, Salisbury senior Oliver Morris found himself at the bottom of the right face-off circle, and flung a wrister that eluded Morris. Morris beats Morris. And the game is tied at 2-2, with Novak picking up another assist. With momentum on their side, Salisbury kept pressing furiously, right through the end of regulation and overtime, too. But Morris barred the door, making some terrific stops in OT. The final shot count? Salisbury, 44-16.

"We defend well," noted Shannon. "When the highest talent buys in and plays a 200-foot honest game it's infectious. And Morris was unbelievable."

Taft plays its traditional night game on Saturday at Berkshire for the D'Arco Cup. Salisbury is off until Monday, a road game at Millbrook.
