Cushing Tops Gilmour Again

Ashburnham, Mass. – This morning, host Cushing topped Gilmour Academy for the second time in three days, this time by a 2-0 score.

Steve MacClellan put Cushing up at 15:01 of the first after being sent in alone by Brad Malone. Ben Ewing made it 2-0 off a give-and-go with Ryan Duff at 14:13 of the second.

Freshman TJ Massie recorded the shutout in his first Cushing start, making 17 saves.

Alex Petizian had a great game for Gilmour, stopping 45 of 47 shots.

We just provide, at no cost to the schools, a secure system whereby coaches are able to input schedules, rosters, and box scores. If there are any prep coaches out there who didn’t receive our mass e-mailing earlier this month, please let us know, as that e-mailing contained all necessary information on uploading info to the site.

If there is any way we can be of technical assistance, please write admin (at) ushr.comFor hockey news and all editorial matters please email editor Chris Warner at cwarner (at) ushr.com or information (at) ushr.comPlease replace the (at) with the traditional @.

We will be adding in the remaining Christmas/New Year’s tournaments by tomorrow evening.

Many prep schools have not, as of Monday, finalized their rosters.

Thank you.

St. Andrew’s Wins Berkshire Tournament

Sheffield, Mass. -- St. Andrew’s College beat the Nichols School, 4-1, in the championship game of the Berkshire Thanksgiving Classic this afternoon.

Host Berkshire and St. Andrew’s were in the same division, had identical won-lost records, and their head-to-head matchup Saturday night ended in a 3-3 tie. St. Andrew’s won the division, though, by goal differential – a 12-2 thumping of Williston on Friday turned out to be the major factor – and moved on to today’s final.

Look for the goal differential format to be scrapped next season when the tournament, officially known as the Berkshire/Shady Side Thanksgiving Classic, moves to Pittsburgh. The sites will alternate every year, much as Nichols and Belmont Hill do with their Christmas tournament.

Cushing Opens With Convincing Win

Ashburnham, Mass. --  Host Cushing defeated Gilmour Academy 5-2 in its season opener here today. For the Penguins, goals came off the sticks of senior Sammy D’Agostino, junior Keith Yandle, sophomore Sean Coughlin. PG Scott McClellan (ex of Catholic Memorial), and Scott Soborowski, an ’88 from Novi, Mich. native who played for Honeybaked last season,

Cushing, down by 1-0 less than a minute into the game, scored four goals in the second period to break the game open. Cushing also hit about six posts.

In goal, junior Richard Backman was solid, picking up the win for the Penguins. Sophomore Richard Sillery was in net for Gilmour.

D’Agostino, a UMass recruit, had an exceptionally good game for Cushing. He, along with Soborowski and Pat McLaughlin, who played at Hotchkiss last season, made up Cushing’s top line this afternoon. Yandle was strong from the blue line, his goal coming on a blast from the point.

Also looking good for Cushing, which played a hard-nosed, competitive game, were forwards Aaron Bogosian, who played for the Cornwall Colts last season; and 6’2” Brad Malone, a sophomore from Miramichi, NB.

Cushing, which lost forwards Chris Bourque, Billy Ryan, Boomer Ewing, Danny Rossman, and Alex Berry off last year’s team, has refashioned itself into a more blue-collar team, with less high-end skill than recent years, but with possibly more depth.

Cushing and Gilmour, which is in Gates Mills, Ohio, just outside of Cleveland, will meet again Monday morning at 10 am in Ashburnham.

What Goes for College, Goes for Preps

Prior to Exeter’s 5-1 win over Hebron on Wednesday, game officials notified both benches that it was a new era, and that they would be calling games in a manner that mirrors what we’ve been seeing in college hockey this fall.

Despite the advance notice, there were 28 penalties in the game, 16 on Exeter, and 12 on Hebron.

Sophomore forward Michael Doherty, the younger brother of former Andover and UNH and current Des Moines (USHL) defenseman John Doherty, opened the scoring for Exeter in the first period. Exeter added three more in the second and one in the third.

For Exeter, junior forward Phil Negus had a pair of goals, senior forward Patrick Collins had a goal and an assist and junior forward Evan Crosby and junior defenseman Wade Houston each had a pair of assists.

Exeter outshot Hebron 44-18. Hebron got a strong performance from their goaltender in a losing effort, and Exeter PG Chris Mannix, ex of Belmont Hill, kicked out 17 shots.

Thanksgiving Tournaments, Part II

Here are some additional Thanksgiving tournament/jamboree schedules. If you add these to the previous list (scroll down the page to prep news of 11/10), there will be seven schedules in total.

Also, Cushing opens its regular season with a game on Sat. Nov. 27, hosting Gilmour Academy at 2:00 pm. They will also play Gilmour on Mon. the 29th at 10:00 am.
