Sat. Jan. 29 Highlights
@ Choate 3, Avon 2 --
Choate scored the upset of the day, knocking off #2 Avon with a 3-2 win. This one was no accident, as the Wild Boars outshot the Winged Beavers, 37-24. Dan Linell (1g, 1a) had a perfectly average night by his standards; the Choate senior averages two points per game.

@ Albany Academy 4, Williston 1 -- Albany Academy, entering the most recent Prep Poll at #10, just keeps rolling. Today the NEPSHC’s best non-New England entry used three third period goals to break a 1-1 deadlock with Williston. Junior Mark Knowlton had two goals for Albany. Sophomore Tim Keegan had a busy afternoon, seeing 57 shots in 53 minutes between the pipes for Williston.

@ Trinity-Pawling 2, Taft 1 -- Senior captain Josh Roberts (1g, 1a) struck 2:35 into overtime to give T-P a 2-1 win over Taft. T-P senior Zach Kizitaff stopped 33 of 35 shots for the hosts to pick up the win. Taft has now lost three in a row and six of eight.

@ Holderness 7, Pingree 0 -- Holderness thumped Pingree 7-0, getting big days from a couple of Canadian forwards: senior Derek Pimentel (1g, 4a) and sophomore Francis Parenteau (3g, 2a) each had five points. Junior goalie Andrew Munroe kept a clean sheet, making 30 saves.

@ Kent 3, Westminster 2 -- Kent scored two late third period goals – including the winner by senior Connor MacPhee with one second left – to get a big win over #6 Westminster. Kent seems to have regained momentum after a midseason hiccup with two wins this week.

@ Rivers 4, Middlesex 0 -- Rivers goalie Ryan Colena, just an eighth grader, made 38 saves to shut out Middlesex. Colena now sports a tidy .931 save percentage, having seen most of the minutes this season for the Red Wings. Senior forward Michael Whouley had two goals and an assist to pace the Rivers offense.

Governor’s 5 @ Winchendon 3 -- Governor’s junior goaltender Nick Commesso turned away 35 of 38 shots to lead his team to a win on the road at Winchendon. Winchendon trailed 4-1 going into the third period but came up just short in its comeback attempt as senior Nick Wirth’s second goal of the game – an empty netter – sealed the deal for Governor’s.

@ Cushing 6 Exeter 4 -- #4 Cushing took care of business at home, beating Exeter 6-4. The game was perhaps closer than the Penguins would have liked, but senior captain Nevin Lawler (2g, 1a) iced the game with an empty netter with ten seconds left on the clock.

Tilton 4 @ NMH 2 -- Tilton used four third period goals – including three in the final three minutes – to get a 4-2 come-from-behind win at Northfield-Mt. Hermon. Junior Kyle Larson and PG Chris Healy had two goals apiece for the visitors.

@ Andover 5, Loomis Chaffee 2 -- Andover scored five unanswered goals in the second and third periods to beat Loomis at home. Sophomore Austin Heffner (2g, 1a) had his first three points of the season to lead the way offensively for the hosts.

Salisbury 2 @ Berkshire 1 -- Taking ten penalties on the road generally isn’t a formula for success, but fifth-ranked Salisbury made it work, slipping past Berkshire by a score of 2-1. The Knights are riding a seven game win streak, while Berkshire sees its five game unbeaten streak snapped. Salisbury netminder Tim Ernst made 25 saves to earn the win.

@ BB&N 7 Worcester Academy 1 -- BB&N got four first period goals and never looked back, rolling past Worcester Academy at home by a score of 7-1. BB&N outshot its visitors 44-15.

@ Milton 8, Thayer 1 -- Senior defenseman Pat McNally had four points (2g,2a), and senior forward Woody Hudson had a pair of goals. Seniors Sean Okita, Dan Merenich and George Pantazopoulos each had a goal and an assist. Junior D Robby O'Gara had a pair of assists.

Pomfret 3 @ Canterbury 2 -- Pomfret sophomore goaltender Nick Ellis kicked out 32 of 34 shots to allow Pomfret to nip Canterbury, 3-2, on the road. Senior Danny Palumbo and PG Brian Hickey each had a goal and an assist for Pomfret. Shots favored Canterbury, 34-21.

The St. George's @ St. Sebastian's game was cancelled by St. George's.

Other scores:
Groton 5, Roxbury Latin 1
Deerfield 4, Hotchkiss 1

Thurs. 1/27/11 -- Worcester @ Brooks, postponed from yesterday to today, has been postponed again. No makeup date.

In Massachusetts, the snow will start later in the afternoon, and continue overnight.

Wed. Jan. 26 Highlights
(#8) St. Sebastian’s 5 @ (#9) Nobles 4
-- Junior forwards Joe Prescott and Danny O’Regan led the way as St. Sebastian’s roared back from a 3-0 deficit, skating off with a huge 5-4 win at Nobles, and sweeping the season series between the archrivals. This game also had massive Keller division implications, as both teams entered the afternoon with only one league loss.

Trailing 3-0 with 7:50 remaining in the second, an O’Regan powerplay strike got the visitors on the board. Less than a minute later, Prescott found the back of the net to cut the deficit to one. With 4:41 left in the period, O’Regan tied the game with another powerplay goal, and the teams went to the locker room tied at 3-3. The Arrows picked up right where they left off to open the third, getting a goal from junior Brendan Burke to take the lead. Prescott added an insurance goal, and by the time Nobles junior Phil Sciretta scored with the extra skater on it was too late. Sciretta also had an assist, and along with sophomore forward Chris Calnan (2g), were the only two Bulldogs to have multiple points on the day.

Exeter 3 @ (#3) KUA 0 -- Exeter got three third period goals to pull off a huge upset at #3 Kimball Union. Junior Brian Hart (2g) and PG Billy Sellers did all the scoring for the visitors, while sophomore Ben Veres (30 saves) was perfect between the pipes. KUA has been sliding a bit recently, going 1-2-2 in its last five after losing only twice in its first 17 contests.

(#4) Cushing 5 @ NMH 3 --
Two goals (one empty-net) by sophomore Robbie Baillargeon in the final two and a half minutes earned the #4-ranked Penguins the win as they rallied back from their second one-goal deficit of the game. PG Sam Kane (1g,2a) and sophomore Garrett Hehir (2a) were integral to the rally as well. Cushing junior goaltender Liam Moorfield-Yee picked up the win in the Penguins net, while PG Dave Donzanti kicked out 31/35 in a losing effort for the Hoggers.

@ (#2) Avon Old Farms 5, Loomis-Chaffee 3 -- A Greg Gozzo (3g,2a) hat-trick squashed the Pelicans second rally of the game to earn a home win for #2 Avon. Senior Mark Naclerio (1g,3a) also had a big night for Avon. Loomis senior goaltender Steve Michalek kicked out 42 of 47 for the loss, while goaltender Ben Freiberg (20/23) picked up the win in Avon’s crease. Avon’s powerplay was on fire, capitalizing on three of the five Loomis penalties.

@ Deerfield 4 (#6) Westminster 0 -- Deerfield won its third in a row, upending #6 Westminster at home. Sophomore goaltender Jake Thoubboron earned the shutout with 26 saves for Deerfield, which got goals from four different players.

Groton 4, @ BB&N 3 (OT) -- Nils Martin (2g) was the OT hero for the Zebras, stopping BB&N from coming all the way back from a 3-0 hole by scoring 14 seconds into the extra frame. James DiBlasi (1g,1a) started BB&N’s rally mid-way through the second. Luke Turchetta scored Groton’s two other goals.

@ Tilton 7, New Hampton 2 -- Juniors Kyle Larson (3g,2a) and Anthony Flaherty (3g,4a) both got to work on their hat trick efforts within the first five minutes, leading the Rams over New Hampton with a three-goal performance in the first, and capping it off with a three-goal third. New Hampton used two goaltenders in a losing effort, while senior goaltender William Flachsbinder (23/25) held the fort for the Rams.

Lawrence Academy 6 @ Governor’s 2 -- Senior Michael Jamieson (2g,1a) had a big night for the Spartans as they benefited from the scoring efforts of five different skaters. The Spartans set up shop in the Governor’s Academy crease, and Governor’s used three different goaltenders to stop 42 shots. Junior Nathaniel Heilbron stopped 14 of 16 for the Spartans win.

@ Kent 5 , Taft 2 -- Kent got back in the win column with a 5-2 home win over Taft. Kent, likely tired of losing games, jumped all over the Rhinos with four first period goals and coasted the rest of the way. Senior Captain Drew Brown had a hat trick to lead the home side.

@ Berkshire 5, Hotchkiss 3 -- Berkshire got its second win over Hotchkiss in nine days, again by a score of 5-3. Berkshire, unbeaten in its last 5, got two goals and an assist from Junior forward Kevin Rooney.

@ Millbrook 7, Williston-Northampton 1 -- A hat-trick from junior Carl D’Amour-Belizario (3g,1a) capped off a five-goal burst in twelve minutes, rewarding the Mustangs with the win. Millbrook senior goaltender Tim Cooney kicked out 27 of 28 for the win. The Mustangs are slowly clawing their way back to .500 and improve to 8-10-2.

@ Winchendon 2, Andover 1 (OT) -- A short-handed tally wasn’t enough for Winchendon PG Mike Cherpak (2g), who added the game-winner in the extra frame. Winchendon sophomore goaltender Simon Jasmin kicked out 39 of 40, while junior Tyler Kirsch was the hard-luck loser, stopping 43 of 45 shots.

St. Paul’s 4 @ Thayer 0 -- St. Paul’s extended its win streak to three, beating Thayer on the road. Senior netminder Derick Roy stopped all 22 shots he faced to earn the shutout in a game that was close until St. Paul’s got three third period goals – including two in the last four minutes – to ice the win.

@ Berwick 6, Proctor 4 -- Berwick beat Proctor 6-4 in a game that featured ten different goal scorers. Berwick junior Marc-Olivier Lehoux provided offense from the blue line, picking up three points (1g, 2a).

Sat. Jan. 22 Highlights
Berkshire 5 @ Avon Old Farms 4 (OT) – Berkshire, after a rough December, has been picking it up since the holiday break and today cashed in with an OT road upset at #1 Avon Old Farms. The winning goal was scored by junior Brendan McGovern. Trevor Mingoia (1g,2a) had three points for the Bears, while Greg Gozzo had a pair of goals for Avon. Senior Mitch Gillam earned the win in net, kicking out 34 of 38.

@ St. Paul’s 3, Belmont Hill 2 (OT) – A goal by junior Josh Dickman at 4:49 of overtime lifted St. Paul’s past Belmont Hill. Senior goalie Derick Roy stopped 37 of 39 to earn the win for St. Paul’s. Belmont Hill junior Dave Cunningham stopped 34 of 37 in a losing cause. Belmont Hill is 1-3-1 over their last five.

St. Sebastian’s 6 @ Governor’s 3 – St. Seb’s went on the road and picked up their eighth win over their last nine. Juniors Joe Prescott (2g,1a) and Danny Regan (1g,2a) each picked up three points. Junior Brendan Burke (1g,1a) and senior D Desmond Bergin (2a) each had two points.

@ BB&N 5, Rivers 3 – Juniors Luke Griffin (1g,3a) and Matt Pugh (2g,1a) led the BB&N attack. Senior Sam Parker kicked out 21 shots for the win.

@ Middlesex 4, Groton 1 – Middlesex, behind senior goalie Zach Arnold (34/35), won their third straight. Middlesex got goals from four different scorers.

Taft 3 @ Canterbury 2 (OT) – Senior Mike Moran scored at 3:55 of OT to lift the Rhinos to the .500 mark with a road win at Canterbury. Junior Jimmy Harrison kicked out 24 of 26 for the win. Canterbury PG Scott Steele stopped 34 of 37 in a losing cause.

Milton 2 @ Kimball Union 2 – In a heavyweight battle up north, #3 Milton came back from a 2-0 deficit after the first period to earn a road tie against #5 Kimball Union. After juniors Dennis Kravchenko and Elie Vered scored in the first for KUA, Milton’s Sean Okita scored in the second, and senior George Pantazopolous tied it up with 3:04 left in regulation. Pat McNally assisted on both Milton goals. Senior Sean Dougherty kicked out 34 shots for the Mustangs, while senior Steve Mastalerz stopped 26 for the Wildcats.

Lawrence 5 @ Proctor 1 – Seniors Michael Jamieson (2g) and Andrew Cerretani (1g,1a) led the scoring for LA. Senior Jordan Nathan kicked out 23 of 24 shots for the win.

Hebron 3 @ Tilton 1 – Lumberjacks sophomore Guillaume Belanger-Therien  stopped 40 of 41 shots to lead Hebron to a 3-1 win at Tilton.

Northfield Mt. Hermon 3, Lawrenceville 2 -- NMH scored three unanswered goals including two in the third period to squeeze past Lawrenceville 3-2 at Trinity College.  Senior captain Real Huot had both goals for Lawrenceville in the loss.

South Kent 3, Kent’s Hill 1: South Kent beat Kent’s Hill 3-1 in a game played at Cushing Academy. Junior goaltender Nick Devine did all he could to keep Kent’s Hill in the game, stopping 43 of 46 shots.

Albany Academy 4 @ Pomfret 3: Junior Tyler Hynes’s second goal of the game gave Albany Academy an overtime win at Pomfret. Junior defenseman Jeff Taylor had a goal and two assists for Albany, winners of 11 of 12 since losing to Salisbury on Dec. 15th.

@ Salisbury 5, Kent 2: # 2 Kent dropped its fourth in a row, this time at the hands of #9 Salisbury. Junior John Knight had three points (1g, 2a) and classmate John Stevens had two goals to pace the Salisbury offense. The Knights seem to be rounding into form, having won five straight since starting 2011 with a disappointing loss to Deerfield.

@ Nobles 7, Andover 3: Nobles had no problem with Andover, coasting to a 7-3 home win. A hat trick by junior Stephen Miller led the way for the Bulldogs, who appear to be headed back in the right direction after some inconsistent play over break. The test will come on Wednesday when rival St. Sebastian’s comes down the street for a game with ISL and NEPSIHA implications.

@ Deerfield 4, Choate 3: Junior Kevin Roy’s overtime goal gave Deerfield a huge upset win over #4 Choate. The Wild Boars had come back to tie the game with two third period goals, the second being a powerplay strike by senior Kyle Criscuolo with just 31 seconds remaining. Choate, ranked #4 in the prep poll, finishes a tough week that also included a loss to Salisbury and a tie with Berkshire.

Westminster 3 @ Loomis-Chaffee 2: #10 Westminster managed to come out of Loomis with a win – but barely. Junior forward Chris Izmirlian tied the game with just over six minutes to go and then freshman Francesco Iannatuono got the winner with 59 seconds left in the extra session. Loomis senior goalie Steve Michalek (49 saves) kept his team in the game, as he does every game: he has not allowed more than four goals the entire season.

Pantazopolous Hat Trick Leads Milton

Milton, Mass. -- #3-ranked Milton Academy rolled over Lawrence Academy 6-2 here today, avenging a 3-1 loss at Lawrence in early December and, in the process, positioning themselves as the Keller division favorite. Milton has a record of 5-2 and two games left with archrival and defending champion Nobles. (Note that Milton’s Flood-Marr win doesn’t count as a Keller game.)

The game was missing some star power as Milton senior defenseman Pat McNally, a dominant offensive force from the blueline, sat out, having been ejected from Sunday’s win over South Kent; and Lawrence forward Tyler Whitney (younger brother of BC forwards Joe and Steve) was out with an arm injury, which will cost him the rest of his junior season. Additionally, Lawrence captain Michael Jamieson was playing with a significant knee injury.

Just 1:49 into the game, Milton senior Michael Godwin carried the puck deep into Lawrence territory and, circling the cage, tossed a bad-angle wrister on net that snuck through the pads of junior goaltender Nathaniel Heilbron, getting the Mustangs on the board early. The rest of the first produced few quality chances either way, and the teams went to their respective locker rooms with Milton up 1-0.

After a good penalty kill to start the second period, senior George Pantazopolous tipped home a Jake Turrin shot to make it 2-0 Mustangs. Halfway through the second frame, Turrin – who was a force all night bouncing between forward and defense – flew down the left wing, cut in, and slid one five-hole on Heilbron. At this point, Lawrence coach Kevin Potter made a goaltending change, lifting Heilbron in favor of senior Jordan Nathan. The move appeared to pay off as Lawrence, finding some jump in their step,  ripped off two goals in a 1:01 span. However, Milton struck back on a Dan Merenich powerplay goal with 2:31 left in the second that swung momentum back to the hosts.

In the third, Pantazopolous picked up two more goals to complete a hat trick, with Merenich assisting on both.

Milton coach Paul Cannata was pleased with the win but mentioned that his squad has a “big test” on Saturday when they travel to Kimball Union to play a game that could have significant playoff implications. On the other side, Potter called his team’s effort “lackluster” and said that “against a good team you need to bring your ‘A’ game and we didn’t do that today.” His Spartans play host to Nobles on Friday in what amounts to a must-win if they are to stay in contention to win the Keller.

Three Stars:

1. JakeTurrin: Senior captain switches between forward and defense and makes it all look easy as he finishes with a goal and an assist
2. George Pantazopolous: forward bangs in three and now leads the team with 12 goals
3. Dan Merenich: senior wing picks up three points (1g, 2a) and, along with linemate Woody Hudson, provides a physical presence up front.

Wed. Jan. 19 Highlights

Avon Old Farms 4, Northfield –Mt. Hermon 3 (OT) -- In a rematch of last season’s New England Championship Finals, Avon emerged victorious again, rallying back from a 3-1 deficit midway through the third frame. Senior captain Marc Naclerio (1g,1a) sparked the Avon rally but it was junior John Carricato (1g) who would emerge as the OT hero.

@ Taft 4, Loomis-Chaffee 0 -- Taft bombarded Loomis’ net, pouring on 64 shots and getting four goals for their efforts, from four different scorers. Taft junior goaltender Jimmy Harrison kicked out thirty shots for the shut-out effort. For Loomis, Harvard-bound goaltender Steve Michalek made a valiant effort, kicking out sixty of sixty-four.

Hotchkiss 6 @ Kent 4: The wheels are off the bus at Kent: the Lions dropped their third game in five days and second straight to a team with a losing record, bowing  to Hotchkiss 6-4 at home. Hotchkiss got goals from six different players and 30 saves from senior Ryan Maseau to pull off the upset.

Proctor 5 @ Rivers 2 -- Proctor returned to their season with a statement as junior Ryan Rumble (1g,1a) and PG Jack Hyman (1g,1a) had strong nights. Senior goaltender Frankie McCormick earned the win in Proctor’s net.

Cushing 4, Thayer 1 (at Babson) -- Cushing picked up four goals, all from different scorers, and Liam Moorfield-Yee (29/30) earned the win in the Penguins’ crease.

@ Salisbury 6, Trinity-Pawling 0 -- Host Salisbury thrashed visiting Trinity-Pawling, pouring the shots on TP’s goaltender Zach Kizitaff (45/51). Pomfret’s sophomore goaltender Nick Ellis stopped 33 shots to overcome a 35-30 shot advantage in favor of Winchendon.

@ Hebron 5, Bridgton 1: Hebron overmatched a Maine rival for the second consecutive game by cruising past Bridgton Academy. Junior forward Andrew Graham had a hat trick to lead the Lumberjacks’ offense.

New Hampton 4 @Berwick 1: It is not often that you can take 18 penalties on the road and still win the game, but that’s exactly what New Hampton did in beating Berwick 4-1. Post-grad Dave Caracino had two goals and an assist.  New Hampton. senior netminder Max Schwann made 27 saves on 28 shots.

@ St. Sebastian’s 6 Andover 2: St. Seb’s just keeps rolling, beating Andover at home. Junior forwards Brendan Burke (2g, 1a) and Danny O’Regan (3a) each had three points for the home side. The boys from Needham are now unbeaten in their last eight and have risen to #8 in the prep poll: they are 7-0-1 since a loss to Thayer on Dec. 18th that left the Arrows at 3-4. St. Sebastian’s outshot Andover 36-24 on the afternoon.

Gunnery 8 @ Millbrook 1: After a huge 6-5 upset of Kent on Monday, Millbrook did not have another one in the tank: Gunnery pounded them, 8-1. Sophomore Anton Frondelius earned the victory in net, turning away 23 shots, and senior defenseman Craig Wyszomirski chipped in two goals for Gunnery.

@ Albany Academy 6, Hoosac 0: Albany Academy ran its record to 15-4-1 with a 6-0 thrashing of Hoosac. Shots were 53-19 Albany. Junior forward Tyler Hynes had a hat trick and senior captain Albee Daley had three assists to lead the offense for Albany, while senior goalie Josh Holmes did all that was asked of him, earning a shutout by making 19 saves between the pipes.

Berkshire 6 @ Choate 6: 59 minutes of hockey was not enough to separate Berkshire and Choate as the two sides skated to a 6-6 tie. It looked as if Berkshire might be able to pull off the big road upset, but Choate senior and leading scorer Dan Linell banged one in with the goalie pulled to knot things up with 48 seconds remaining in regulation.

@ Pingree 3, NYA 2: Junior d-man Conor Clement had two goals to lead Pingree past North Yarmouth. Though NYA had a 34-23 shot advantage, junior netminder Scott Caradonna was strong in net for Pingree, making 32 saves.

@ Lawrenceville 4, Portlege 4: Senior Eddie Lang of Lawrenceville put his team ahead with a shorthanded goal at 6:42 of the third, but a goal by Portlege freshman Sonny Milano with a mere four ticks left on the clock tied things at 4-4. Lawrenceville junior goalie James Lawrence kept his side in it, making 41 saves.

@ Governor’s 3, BB&N 1: Governor’s junior forward and leading scorer Alex Minter picked up a pair in a 3-1 home win against BB&N. Governor’s is now 9-1-1 in its last 11.

@Nobles 5, St. Paul’s 1: Nobles sophomore Connor Maher lost his shutout bid with just 1:09 remaining but still picked up the win, making 20 saves. Junior forward Andrew Doane had a goal and two assists for the Bulldogs, who had goals from five different scorers.

@ South Kent 6 Hill 2:  Senior Jimmy Gabrione had three goals and an assist to lead South Kent.

Proctor Getting Closer
Proctor Academy, two weeks after after 11 players were hospitalized due to carbon dioxide exposure after a Jan. 3 practice that took place after workmen had left the ventilation system off overnight, is getting ready to resume their schedule.

All the Hornets except one – senior Connor Hayes, who was the most sick -- have been practicing since last Thursday and hope to be playing Wednesday at Rivers, which would be their first game since Dec. 18th. They have had to postpone/cancel four games so far this month. Today, they scrimmaged Cardigan Mountain’s “A” team.

That game will determine if they’re ready to go Wednesday. We’ll let you know if that game, which we’ve marked on the schedule as tentative, will indeed take place.

St. Seb's Keeps Rolling Along

Needham, Mass. -- A goal by junior Brendan Burke with just under two minutes remaining gave St. Sebastian’s a 3-2 home win over St. Paul’s. With the win, the Arrows, who this week made their first appearance in the USHR Prep Poll at #10, improved to 7-1-1 over their last nine games.

After a scoreless first period, St. Paul’s went up 1-0 in the second period when senior Paul-Arthur Plaisir came flying down the right wing and beat St. Sebastian’s junior goaltender Gordon Donnelly over the shoulder. But with about six minutes left in the second, St. Sebastian’s coach Sean McCann decided to shake up his lines and put juniors Joe Prescott and Danny O’Regan alongside Burke. The move paid off almost immediately as Prescott banged home a rebound to tie the game at 1-1. McCann explained that with his squad not creating much offense, he put his three best offensive players together and hoped for the best.

About four minutes into the final period, O’Regan scored on a nice individual effort as he went by two St. Paul’s defenders and deked St. Paul’s netminder Derick Roy before sliding the puck into a gaping net. However, two minutes later, St. Paul’s junior defenseman Brad Smelstor – a force in the final two periods – jumped up into the play and, after turning a St. Sebastian’s defender on the right side, shoveled the puck toward the front of the net where it kicked off a skate, tying the game at 2-2. After some back-and-forth play, St. Sebastian’s big line struck one last time as Prescott, from the right corner, found Burke for the winner.

Coach McCann was happy to get the win after a hectic week in which – due to exams and Wednesday’s snowstorm – the team only practiced once. He called the effort “not bad” given the circumstances. On the other side, St. Paul’s coach Mark Bozek called St. Sebastian’s a good team but noted that “to be successful in this league you need to be able to win on the road. ” St. Paul’s will get a chance to take their coach’s advice Wednesday when they conclude a brutal three-game stretch by traveling to Nobles. St. Sebastian’s will host Andover.

Three Stars: 1) Joe Prescott: Moving Prescott to the first line energized the Arrows. 2) Derick Roy: Brown recruit made some excellent saves -- he had 30 in all -- and kept his team in the game. 3) Desmond Bergin: St. Sebastian’s defenseman controlled the game from the back end, logging big minutes in all situations.

Sat. Jan. 15 Highlights

Avon 3 @ Kent 0: In perhaps the biggest game of the young season, Avon goaltender Michael Santaguida stole the show with a 34 save shutout as #3 Avon traveled to Kent and knocked off the #1 ranked team in prep hockey. It was the big guns getting the job done up front for Avon, as their top three scorers -- Mark Naclerio, Greg Gozzo, and Cameron Hatch -- each had a goal in the win. The Beavers avenged a 4-2 loss to Kent earlier this season, and ran their record to 11-2. Kent falls to 9-2.

Berkshire 12 @ Williston-Northampton 2:
Berkshire scored the first six goals of the game and cruised to a 12-2 win at Williston. Senior captain Trevor Mingoia led the way for the Bears with five points (3g, 2a). Berkshire had 65 shots on net in the blowout.

@ Trinity-Pawling 6, Deerfield 5: A Paul Falanga goal with 10 seconds left in overtime gave T-P its first win since December 5th. Deerfield outshot their hosts 38-27 but nonetheless falls to 3-8-2 on the year.

Lawrence 6 @ Thayer 2: Lawrence rebounded after coughing up a late 3-0 lead at Nobles yesterday by traveling to Thayer and coming away with a relatively easy win. The Spartans got big days from forwards Andrew Cerretani (1g, 3a) and George Hunkele (2g, 1).

Groton 8 @ St. George’s 0: Groton traveled down to Newport and blasted St. George’s by a score of 8-0. The ISL’s southernmost entry, once an Eberhart power, falls to 1-9 and has only scored more than two goals once this season. Groton captain Nils Martin had a hat trick in the win.

@ Cushing 3, Tilton 2: Robbie Baillargeon scored with just over two minutes remaining to lift Cushing to a 3-2 win over Tilton. The Penguins were outshot 29-23, but junior goalie Chad Hardy made 27 saves to earn the win.

@ NMH 7, Holderness 4: Senior captain Joe Birmingham had a huge afternoon putting up four goals and two assists as NMH knocked off Holderness. Sophomore Austin Cangelosi had a nice day as well (2g, 2a). Holderness has now lost 6 of its last 7.

@ Hebron 4, Kent’s Hill 1: Junior forward Andrew Graham had a hat trick to lead Hebron past Kent’s Hill. The Lumberjacks held a decisive advantage in shots, outshooting their guests 38-21.

Loomis-Chaffee 4 @ Hotchkiss 2: Hotchkiss outshot Loomis 49-23 but senior goalie Steve Michalek made 47 saves to steal a win for the visitors. Junior Tyler Tubinis had a hand in all four Loomis goals (3g, 1a).

@ Brooks 7, Roxbury Latin 2: It continues to be a long season for Roxbury Latin. Brooks poured 57 shots on net while only conceding 11 in a home win.

Gunnery 8 @ Winchendon 0: #8 Gunnery blasted Winchendon 8-0 at home. The game was scoreless halfway through the second but once Gunnery got going they really poured it on their hosts. Gunnery goaltender Robert Segin kept a clean sheet in picking up the win; the shots were 30 apiece.

@ Portsmouth Abbey 6, King-Low 2: Senior captain Sheamus Standish had a hat trick to lead the Abbey past visiting King-Low. The Ravens outshot their guests 40-18.

@ Andover 2, Exeter 1: Andover squeezed by rival Exeter at home 2-1 with Andover senior goalie Eric Yoon turning away 27 of 28 shots to earn the win. With both teams sitting below .500, the rivalry lacked the playoff implications of recent seasons.

Salisbury 3 @ Westminster 2: Connor Cunningham’s third period goal gave visiting Salisbury a huge win over #5 Westminster. Salisbury took 24 penalties yet came out even on the PK, getting a shorthanded goal but giving up a 5x3 goal in the second. Senior Adam Platt – Salisbury’s leading scorer – had a goal and an assist.

@ Albany Academy 8, Canterbury 2: Albany Academy got a hat trick from Junior Anthony Langevin, beating up on Canterbury 8-2. The game featured 46 penalties, with 27 of those assessed to the visitors from Canterbury.

@ Pomfret 3, Millbrook 2 (OT) -- Senior captain Danny Palumbo tied it up at 2-2 for the Griffins, sending the game into overtime. Then Bowdoin recruit Connor Quinn -- with 58 seconds remaining in the extra frame -- struck for his second goal of the day to win the tilt in dramatic fashion. Senior Penn Sednaoui (1g) had a strong game for the Mustangs, while sophomore goaltender Nick Ellis looked sharp for the Griffins.

Hoosac 7 @ Rye Country Day 2 -- Juniors William Flynn (2g) and Thomas Carlaccini (1g,3a) had big nights for Hoosac.

@ Choate 12, Taft 2 -- Kyle Criscuolo (2g,1a) and Joe Rausch (3g,1a) led the Wild Boars’ attack. Each team untilized two goaltenders. Choate goaltender Sal Magliocco stopped 21 of 22 in his two frames.

@ Tabor 2, Kimball Union 1 – A Cam Spiro goal with 28 seconds left lifted Tabor to a 2-1 upset win over #2-ranked Kimball Union. Earlier in the third, Tabor captain Mark Meads had tied the game at 1-1. Junior goaltender Shane Joyce (30/31) earned the win in the Seawolves net. KUA’s Steve Mastalerz was the hard-luck loser, stopping 38 of 40.

KUA Makes a Statement

If anyone still thought that Kimball Union wasn’t among the prep elite after losing in the finals of the Flood-Marr, those doubts were silenced today as the visiting Wildcats ran over Cushing Academy 7-0 in Ashburnham.

After a somewhat tentative start by both teams, a strong shift by KUA’s second line of Ryan Cole, Jonathan Charbonneau and Casey Miller led to a powerplay for the visitors. On the powerplay, some nice puck movement paid off as Yale recruit Ryan Cole activated from the point, took a cross-ice pass from Gabriel Veilleux and beat Cushing goaltender Chad Hardy. That was it for first period goals and KUA took the lead to the locker room.

Both teams came out with enthusiasm to start the second. Just after Kimball Union had killed off a Cushing powerplay, Phil Boucher curled out from behind the net and fired a wrist shot off Dion and in to extend the lead to 2-0. About halfway through the second, KUA senior goalie Steve Mastalerz made a spectacular glove save on a shorthanded bid by Cushing. With one second left and KUA on the powerplay, Cole had a rebound chance on a gaping net but couldn’t control a bouncing puck and missed wide left.

KUA began the third on the powerplay, and caught a break when Cushing forward Mike Walker was hauled down on a shorthanded breakaway but no call was made. Seconds later, Casey Miller’s pass deflected off a Cushing defenseman, and in; Cushing coach Rob Gagnon was justifiably irate but to no avail, and the Wildcats never looked back, notching four more goals in the third. The fifth KUA goal was a real beauty by Cole on a two-man advantage, as he took a pass, faked a shot – causing the defenseman to slide past him – and then ripped off a laser of a wrister short side high.

Kimball Union was understandably excited after the win, smiling and shouting as they came off the ice. Coach Ryan Miller acknowledged that the “game was closer than the score would indicate” and noted that Mastalerz (25 saves) kept the team in the game at the start. When asked how he plans to avoid a letdown after such a great win, he said that he told the players to “enjoy the win tonight, but then refocus because we have a tough stretch coming up.”

In the other locker room, Rob Gagnon was not thrilled with his team’s performance, but said “give [KUA] all the credit in the world, they are a good hockey team.” He added that “we knew they had a good powerplay, so the game plan was the stay out of the box and we didn’t do it. We gave them opportunities, and they took advantage.”

On Wednesday, Kimball Union hosts Exeter while Cushing looks to rebound on the road at Tabor.

Proctor Trying to Get Back on Feet

Proctor Academy is struggling to get the second half of the season going after 11 players were hospitalized as a result of nitrogen dioxide exposure at Monday’s practice.

The problem came about because technicians working on the rink’s ventilation system on Monday left it off, intending to turn it back on the following day. However, rink staff, unaware that the system was off, then used the Zamboni, which uses propane and emits nitrogen dioxide. When the team practiced that night it was in an unventilated building.

All twenty Proctor players wound up showing symptoms of nitrogen dioxide poisoning, which includes chest tightness, coughing, and shortness of breath. Ten players were hospitalized overnight Tuesday before being released. An additional player, diagnosed with pneumonia because of the exposure, was held longer.

Wednesday’s game at Andover was cancelled. So, too, were today’s scheduled home game vs. Holderness and tomorrow’s scheduled game at Northfield-Mt. Hermon.

The next game on the schedule for Proctor is on Wed. Jan. 12th, when the Hornets host New Hampton.

-- In a totally unrelated cancellation, the Governor’s @ Pomfret game, originally scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at 2:15 pm, has been scratched. Apparently, the ADs were unaware of the game, and hadn’t made the necessary plans for it.

Paint the Rink Pink
Saturday at Tabor Academy is Paint the Rink Pink Day, a fundraiser to fight cancer put together by the father of senior captain Mark Meads and parents of players on both the boys’ and girls’ teams.

During both the boys’ and girls’ games – the girls play at 3:00 pm vs. Williston; the boys at 5:00 pm vs. Tilton – a silent auction will be held with all sorts of interesting items. Jim Craig, whose daughter plays on the girls’ team, has donated Olympic and pro memorabilia.

A pink Tabor jersey with her name on the back will be donated to Kim Grondin. The mother of Tabor senior forward Kody Grondin, she is battling breast cancer, and the fundraiser is in her honor.

For those who can’t make it, donations can be mailed to Mark Meads; 21 Old Haswell Park Rd.; Middleton, MA 01949. Checks should be made out to The American Cancer Society.

Fri. 1/7/11 -- Today's Brunswick @ Westminster game was cancelled after the Brunswick bus tried to travel through the snow but wound up sitting in traffic for three plus hours.

Wed. 1/5/11 -- Today's Proctor @ Andover game has been cancelled due to sickness among Proctor players.
