Championship Game: Belmont Hill 2, South Kent 1 -- Senior Joe Tierney banged home the rebound of a Mike Blake shot from the right point with 3:59 remaining to lift host Belmont Hill to a 2-1 win over South Kent in the title game here today. Earlier in the game, at 6:27 of the first, South Kent center Jeff Silengo won a draw back to Dillon O'Hara, who beat Belmont Hill goalie Mike Condon with a shot from the point. Brendan McNally found Connor Brickley at the far post and Brickley tipped it by South Kent goalie Tyler Scott to tie the game at 1-1 at 12:15 of the first, and that's where it stayed until Tierney's game-winner. The difference in the game, and the tournament, was the play of Condon, a junior, who kicked out 24 of 25 shots today, and only allowed a total of four goals in the tournament. South Kent goalie Tyler Scott, who stopped 34 of 36 shots, was sharp as well today. Both teams, though tired, battled hard.

Rogers Lifts Arrows to 3-3 Tie in Mutch Cup
Allston, Mass. -- St. Sebastian’s junior forward Steve Rogers snapped off a shot from about 15 feet out to lift the Arrows to a 3-3 tie with Catholic Memorial in the annual Kevin T. Mutch Memorial Game at Harvard University's Bright Hockey Center tonight.CM, ranked #1 among Mass. Public/Parochials, played a strong game, particularly in the second when they got an early goal from sophomore Derek Colluci and a pair from senior Mike Collins to turn a 1-0 deficit after the first into a 3-1 lead going into the third. Big senior right shot d-man Peter Starrette, who was being watched tonight by BU head coach Jack Parker (Harvard is also reported to be in the picture), assisted on all three goals. Starrette, who suffered a concussion on Saturday, was only cleared to play hours before the game.
St. Sebastian’s, which was playing without Michael Hoban (mono), Ryan Coffey (ineligible due to game misconduct), and Bobby Sugrue (conc.), cranked it up a notch in the third, getting an early goal from senior Ryan Harrity to cut the CM lead to 3-2.
It was looking like CM would slip out of the building with their fourth Mutch Cup in five years when Rogers, back at St. Seb’s after a year in Ann Arbor with the NTDP, got the puck in a prime scoring area and cleanly beat CM sophomore goaltender Tom Conlin glove side to make it 3-3.
Starrette had one final rush, but nothing came of it, and that was the game.
The game was played under Mass Interscholastic Athletic Association rules, meaning 15-minute periods and no overtime, the latter aspect giving the game, which was a good, well-contested one, an anti-climactic feel. (Someone at the MIAA needs to consider the virtues of a five minute OT – after all, regulation is only 45 minutes as it is.)
“This game is always a good test for both teams,” said St. Sebastian’s head coach Steve Dagdigian. “I don’t think we handled the puck well tonight, but we competed. In the third period we showed a willingness to battle.”
Catholic Memorial head coach Bill Hanson said, “We had a great effort. Our kids played hard. I like the direction this team is headed in. And we had a chance to win at the end with our best guy coming down.”
Hanson cited the work of Collins, specifically his puck skills. “The Collins-Colluci-Carey line did a great job for us tonight.” (Note: Billy Carey, a sophomore, is the brother of BC recruit Paul Carey, currently playing in the USHL).
Scoring Summary:
First Period: SS – Jancaterino (Donato) 8:15 Second Period: CM -- Colluci (Noonan, Starrette) ppg 3:55; CM – Collins (Colluci, Starrette) 8:33; CM – Collins (Starrette) 13:15. Third Period: SS – Harrity (McNamara) 1:40; SS – Rogers (Jancaterino, Fine) 14:21. Goaltenders: Conlin (CM); McGuirl (SS).

Midway through the third, on the power play, Merrick Friedman buried the rebound of an Antoine Laganiere shot to make it a 2-1 game, but senior goaltender John Yanchek held the fort. Deerfield outshot Hotchkiss 29-19.

Storm Warnings
There are two winter storms in the forecast that will affect travel to and from the prep tournaments. The first is for this afternoon/evening, a fast-moving winter storm which at its height could feature snow falling at the rate of three inches an hour, which makes driving an ordeal. As for snow amounts, up to 12” of snow is expected in the Hartford area and 6”-8” in the Boston area. Then, on Saturday night and into Sunday morning, a powerful Northeaster will affect the region. The exact track of the storm is uncertain, though. Please check your local weather, and drive safely. We value our readers!
12/13/07 updated 10:00 pm
Note: The word is good from the Flood-Marr. They're set to go at 9:00 am (at Milton Academy). If anyone knows of any tournaments that are having weather-related troubles that will affect Friday's schedule, please let us know at information@ushr.com Thanks.
Thurs. Dec. 13 Tournament Results
2:45 pm update -- The Gunnery team bus is still on the road, so the 3:00 pm Avon-Gunnery game is being pushed back to around 4:00 pm. Kent, scheduled to play Berkshire in today's second game, is actually the only school that has arrived at Avon.
3:30 pm -- Exeter and Culver have begun their game at Exeter. We are trying to determine the fate of the Holderness-Pomfret, Tilton-South Kent, and Glades-Northwood game. (Update: They are all on.) However, the late game, the Junior Bruins vs. the New Hampshire Monarchs, an EJHL league game, has been called off.
The 6:00 pm Wyoming Seminary @ GDA game has been called off. No word on a makeup date, or if there is even going to be one.

Purdy Good!
Ashburnham, Mass. -- Exeter senior goaltender Ryan Purdy kicked out all 40 shots he faced to lead his team to a 1-0 win over Cushing here this evening. At the other end, Cushing senior T.J. Massie was pretty close to flawless as well, kicking out 33 of the 34 shots he faced. The only one that eluded him came on a shot from the right point by sophomore defenseman Brendan Cosgrove that appeared to deflect off a skate and into the net at 12:05 of the first period. The goal was credited to Brent Mayo.
Exeter remains undefeated at 6-0-0 while Cushing absorbed their first loss in prep competition. The game was clean, and hard-fought, with Cushing having the edge in play, though a lot of their shots did come from the perimeter and blue line.
The best chance for the Penguins came when senior defenseman Sean Whitney, a Cornell recruit, came close to tying it up when he clanged one off the post with four minutes to play and Cushing on the power play.
After the game, Exeter coach Dana Barbin said, “Considering they’re without all those guys, they gave us a real battle. There was no quit in that Cushing team. They may have been without a lot of players but the guys who were out there played really well. Massie was great.”
And, Barbin added, “I’m happy with my team. They played exceptionally hard from start to finish. Purds is the man, isn’t he? He came in here as a non-repeat 10th grader from the California Wave and has waited his turn and worked hard. Did you hear his teammates chanting “Ry-an Pur-dy, Ry-an Pur-dy” in there?”
We did, right through the walls, loud and clear.
Cushing coach Rob Gagnon said he was happy with the way his team competed. “When we get all our guys back,” he said, “I think we’ll be able to wear a lot of teams down. I am proud of our guys. They say adversity early in the year pays off in the long run... in most cases.”
“T.J. Massie once again did his job in net, and Purdy really competes. If he sees it, he’ll stop it. I tip my hat to that kid. He doesn’t have a lot of size/strength, but he makes up for it in mental strength and pride.”
Note:
Cushing was, as noted, extremely undermanned, as they have been for the last four games. Zach Bradanick, Grant Telfer, Joe Gagne, Neil Lavanchy, and Woody Woodworth, who have been out with suspensions for violation of a school rule, will be back for the Penguins’ next game, which will be Friday at the Lawrence/Groton tournament. In addition to those five, the Penguins played without Casey Brugman, who has been out with a broken collarbone suffered while playing football; and Jon Weintraub, who has a hand injury. They could be back in the lineup for the Lawrence-Groton tournament as well.

Bellotti, Milton Blitz Thayer
Milton, Mass. -- Milton Academy notched four consecutive second period goals – two by senior John Bellotti -- to turn a 1-1 game against visiting Thayer into a decisive 5-1 win.Milton took a 1-0 lead when senior Geoff Mucha poked home the rebound of a Jeremy Deutsch shot from the right point with 6:13 left in the first.
At the 6:39 mark of the second, Thayer scored a short-handed goal when captain Peter Oswald drove to the net and shoveled a backhander by Milton junior goalie Michael Baldino. But whatever lift Thayer got from the goal was short-lived as, less than two minutes later, big Milton freshman Michael Godwin picked up a bouncing puck that a Thayer defenseman was unable to handle in center ice, and broke in on net, beating Thayer goalie Matt Jimenez stick side to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.
There was no looking back for the Mustangs after that. Bellotti picked up a pass in the neutral zone from junior Adam Zacuto, curled into the Thayer end and fired one glove side, beating Jimenez to make it 3-1.
Several minutes later Bellotti struck again, knocking home the rebound of a pipe clanger off the stick of Zacuto to make it 4-1.
Late in the period, with 2:11 remaining, Milton made it 5-1 when junior Ryan Edwards made a great backhand pass to sophomore Chase Davis, who put it in the back of the net, chasing Jimenez. Sophomore Sal Tecci took over in net and held the fort for the rest of the second, and all of the third, kicking out all 16 shots he faced as Milton kept up the pressure.
For the game, Milton outshot Thayer 44-21.
"We had some fortuitous goals in the second period,” said Milton coach Paul Cannata. “We buried the chances we had, and there was some nice puck movement at times. Baldino played very well.”
Thayer coach Larry Rooney said, “Milton played well. They’re a good team. They beat us in every facet of the game. We didn’t come to play today. It’s as simple as that.”

Condon, Silvia Lead Belmont Hill Past Nobles
Belmont, Mass. -- Junior goaltender Mike Condon kicked out 44 shots and senior center Jason Silvia notched three points (1g,2a) to lead Belmont Hill to a 5-2 win over Noble& Greenough here today.
Junior defenseman Dawson Luke (1g,1a), junior forward Michael Blake (1g,1a), and senior Joe Tierney (2a) each had two points for the Hillies. The game had a good pace, was pretty wide open, and featured plenty of scoring chances.
Belmont Hill broke out to a 1-0 lead when Silvia fired one from inside the right face off circle, beating Nobles sophomore goaltender Billy Burchill glove side at the 7:16 mark of the first period. Connor Brickley and Joe Tierney picked up assists on the play.
Minutes later, with Nick Raffone and Chris Steele in the box for Nobles, Belmont Hill had a 5-on-3, but couldn’t capitalize.
Nobles tied it up at 1-1 with 1:12 remaining in the first when senior Matt Marshall, from in tight, banged home the rebound of a Mike Reardon shot from the right point.
Nobles outshot Belmont Hill, 12-9, in the first period.
In the second, Belmont Hill scored a pair of goals less than a minute apart to take a 3-1 lead.
On the first tally, Dawson Luke took a low shot from the right point that found its way though at the 6:55 mark. Blake and Silvia picked up assists.
Forty-five seconds later, freshman forward Brandon McNally – a player to watch – shot one that ticked off the tip of Burchill’s glove and into the net to make it 3-1.
With 4:23 left in the second period, Nobles forward Michael Griffin stripped a Belmont Hill player inside the blue line, went in on Condon alone, firing it top shelf for an unassisted goal to cut the Belmont Hill lead to 3-2, which is where the period ended.
Nobles outshot Bel Hill in the second period, 16-8.
Early in the third, Jake Moscatel curled out of the right corner and picked the low far corner, glove side, on Burchill to give Belmont Hill a 4-2 lead.
A minute or so later, Condon stoned Nobles freshman Billy Arnold -- who was excellent in a losing cause – on a breakaway to keep it a 4-2 game.
At the 5:07 mark, Blake took a shot from the left faceoff circle that deflected off Burchill to make it 5-2 Belmont Hill. Burchill was replaced in goal by sophomore Gene Lane, who would hold Belmont Hill scoreless for the final 12:43.
With 4:36 remaining Silvia hit Nobles’ Arnold from behind – he was OK, taking his next shift -- and Moscatel took a two-minute interference penalty.
Nobles went on a 5-on-3 for two minutes and had a power play for the rest of the game. They used the time well, firing away at Condon. However, the shots that didn’t get through were blocked and time expired without Nobles getting any closer.
The final shots were Nobles 46, Belmont Hill 28.
”I thought our goaltender played great,” said Belmont Hill coach Ken Martin afterward. “Also when we went down two men with five to go, every kid out there did a great job blocking shots.”
Nobles coach Brian Day also gave credit to Belmont Hill’s goaltending and shot blocking. “But we have to be able to cash in on chances,” he said. “I like the fact that we’re getting the chances, but we need a better presence in front. Belmont Hill did a good job today.”

Bowse Shuts Out BB&N
Cambridge, Mass. – The Ben Albertson-Jason Bourgea-Alex Davidson line accounted for both goals and junior goaltender T.J. Bowse stopped all 21 shots he faced to lead the St. Paul’s School past BB&N here this evening.
BB&N’s senior goalie, Chris Venti, was strong in a losing cause, kicking out 35 of 37 shots.
St. Paul’s scored just 1:09 into the game, when Albertson knocked one past Venti from the far post.
Late in the period, it appeared that St. Paul’s had taken a 2-0 lead, but a Corey McGrath goal was waived off when it was ruled the net was off its mooring.
At 6:59 of the third period, new junior Alex Davidson buried a rebound to make it 2-0 St. Paul’s – and that’s how it ended.
St. Paul’s outshot BB&N, 37-21.
”We hung in there,” said St. Paul’s head coach Tim Pratt. “We kept our poise. (Venti) was terrific, and they blocked a lot of shots. Our goalie made a couple of big saves when he had to.”
Terrence Butt, BB&N’s head coach, said he was pleased with his team’s effort. “That’s the biggest thing,” he said, “and it’s been lacking in years past. But not this year.”
“That’s a good St. Paul’s team and our guys hung in there and worked hard from start to finish. That’s the thing I’m most proud of.
“Chris (Venti) was outstanding. He’s one of the top goalies in our league. After going up by one goal early, he responded and kept us in the game.”
