@ Northfield-Mt. Hermon 6, Vermont Academy 1 – PG Matt Greenwood scored four goals to help NMH to their fourth win in a row. Greenwood, a native of Oakville, Ontario, scored a natural hat trick to give his team a 3-0 lead and then added a fourth in the third period. PG goaltender Kyle Redmond (24/25) got the win. NMH is now 14-6-0 in NEPSIHA play.

St. Sebastian’s 3 @ Tabor 2 – St. Seb’s junior D Matt Doherty, with an assist to senior Nick Flanagan, scored the game-winner in the third period, a powerplay goal. Junior Danny Higgins kicked out 22 of 24 shots in the Arrows’ net.

Groton 2 @ BB&N 1 – Freshman Tristan Smith scored a powerplay goal early in the third to give Groton the win. In net, senior Matt Pompa stopped 32 of 33. BB&N outshot Groton, 33-15, but came up short on the scoreboard. Groton, unbeaten in its last four (3-0-1), is now 11-5-3 in NEPSIHA play; BB&N is 11-8-1.

St. Mark’s 7 @ Moses Brown 0 – Junior Adam Lee (2g,2a), and sophs Luke O’Brien (2g,2a) and Zach Tsekos (1g,2a) led the way offensively for the Lions. In net, sophomore Ryan Ferland (21 saves) got the shutout. St. Mark’s, which has won three in a row, improves to 12-6-4 in NEPSIHA competition.

@ Kents Hill 4, Pingree  2 – Sophomore Joey Savinsky had a pair of goals, and senior Jared Cockrell had a pair of assists to lead Kents Hill, which outshot Pingree 47-17.

@ Andover 4, Dexter 3 (OT) – Visiting Dexter held a 3-2 lead after two, but PG Robert Devaney tied it up in the third, and PG Thomas Bishop, with an assist from Devaney, scored the winner in OT. Andover junior goalie Eric Wurman kicked out 19 of 22 for the win. Andover outshot Dexter 33-22. Junior Ryan Donato had two goals for Dexter. Andover is undefeated in its last six games (3 wins, 3 ties), beating two Top 10 teams – #6 Nobles and #9 Dexter -- in the process. Andover is now 10-5-3 in NEPSIHA play; Dexter falls to 13-5-0.

Albany Academy 8 @ Winchendon 3 – AA, despite being outshot 39-33, snapped a four-game losing streak. Juniors Shawn Knowlton (2g,2a), Jake Marrello (4a), and Sean Dempsey (1g,2a); and seniors Jake Mayette (2g,1a) and Sean Phillips (2g,1a) led the scoring parade. Junior Jake Watson (36/39) got the win for the Cadets. Winchendon got a pair of goals from junior Ozzie Borrero.

Delbarton 3, Catholic Memorial 0 – In a game played at Yankee Stadium, Delbarton freshman goaltender Troy Kobryn (19/19) shut out Catholic Memorial. Delbarton got goals from three different scorers – and senior D Michael Gilfillan assisted on all of them.

Berwick 3 @ Tilton 2 – Junior Lucas Michaud scored the game-winner with 2:07 left in the third. Junior G Joe Lazzaro (37/39) earned the win. Berwick, 11-7-0 in NEPSIHA play, has won four in a row.

@ Brooks 4, Middlesex 2 – Senior Ian Speliotis scored the game-winner at 9:59 of the third period, and sophomore D Connor Moore added an empty-netter for the 4-2 win, which enabled Brooks, now 13-7-1 in NEPSIHA play, to snap a two-game losing streak. Junior G Max Prawdzik (32/33) earned the win. Soph Tristan Collins was the hard-luck loser for Middlesex.

ELITE 8 (Stuart/Corkery Tournament):

#1 Salisbury 3, #8 Cushing 2 (Double OT)
#4 Exeter 5, #5 Nobles 3

Playoff Seedings, and Saturday's Highlights

As everyone knows, Saturday was the last day of the regular season. What follows is the ranking of the Teams Under Consideration. The Top 8 is the Elite 8, while the bottom 8 will be reseeded (utilizing the RPI strictly) for postseason play. We posted an Elite 8 earlier in the evening which was incorrect. Not terribly incorrect, as all the right schools were reported, but the order in the bottom half was incorrect. (One school tonight didn't report its game, which threw things off (it's a sensitive system!). Once we realized that game was missing, we tracked it down -- and then recalculated (sounds like a GPS, right?). The new calculations showed that Westminster had dropped out of the TUC -- and Rivers had taken its place. That changed things a bit. Here, then, is the correct JSPR Ranking.

1. Salisbury (15)
2. Kent (14)
3. Thayer (13)
4. Exeter (11) -- Exeter beats Nobles in comparison
5. Nobles (11)
6. Berkshire (10) -- Berkshire beats Gunnery in comparison
7. Gunnery (10)
8. Cushing (7)
--------------------
9. Dexter (6)
10. St. Paul's (5)
11. Andover (5)
12. Choate (5)
13. KUA (4)
14. NMH (3)
15. Belmont Hill (1)
16. Rivers (0)

The Wednesday matchups for the Elite 8 will be:
#8 Cushing @ #1 Salisbury
#7 Gunnery @ #2 Kent
#6 Berkshire @ #3 Thayer
#5 Nobles @ #4 Exeter

We don't believe there any two schools in that group that are more than 2:45 apart, so we don't anticipate any neutral site Elite 8 games this coming Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Here are the seedings for the Large Schools Tournament:
1. St. Paul's
2. Andover
3. NMH
4. Choate
5. Belmont Hill
6. Loomis-Chaffee
7. Taft
8. Proctor

Wednesday's matchups are:
#8 Proctor @ #1 St. Paul's
#7 Taft @ #2 Andover
#6 Loomis-Chaffee @ #3 NMH
#5 Belmont Hill @ #4 Choate

We also don't believe any of the above will require neutral sites.

The seedings for the small school tournament are:
1. Dexter
2. KUA
3. Rivers
4. Westminster
5. Groton
6. Brooks
7. Canterbury
8. Millbrook

As neutral sites seem to be in the cards for #1 Dexter vs. #8 Millbrook, and #2 KUA vs. #7 Canterbury, we might want to see what the NEPSIHA committee decides on Sunday.

Sat. Feb. 22 Highlights

Cushing 6 @ Berwick 1 -- Sophomore Jake Simons (2g,2a) notched four points and junior goaltender Joey Daccord had 16 saves to lead the Penguins to a win which clinched them a spot in the Elite 8. Cushing outshot Berwick 60-17.

NMH 3 @ Tabor 2 -- Junior Ben Freeman scored a SHG late in the second period to put the Hoggers up 3-1. The goal, Freeman's second of the day, held up as the game-winner. Junior Conor O'Brien came up big in net, stopping 44 of 46 shots. Tabor outshot NMH, 46-17. Junior F Wiley Knight had assists on both of Tabor's goals.

@ Kent 4, Choate 3 (OT) -- Choate, in order to have a chance at making the Elite 8, had to win this game, and they couldn't have come closer, as junior Jeremy Germain scored the tying goal with nine seconds remaining in regulation and the goalie pulled for the extra attacker. However, that was as close as Choate got, as Kent senior D Bennett Morrison scored a powerplay goal in OT to win it for the Lions, who are entering the Elite 8 as the #2-ranked team.

Choate came out fast and determined in the first period, but still found themselves down 1-0 as Kent senior Anthony Rinaldi converted on a low wrister from the right faceoff circle just 3:53 in.

Choate evened things up at 1-1 in the second period as senior Owen Powers single-handedly beat two defenders, walked in on Kent senior goaltender Stephen Morrissey, and snapped a quick-release shot stick side.

Heading into the third at 1-1, it was anyone's game but Choate senior Joey Caffrey gave the Wild Boars their only lead of the game when he knocked home a rebound of a Jeremy Germain shot. But Kent responded less than three minutes later when senior James Ricciardi tucked one past Choate junior goalie Sam Tucker for a PPG at the 3:15 mark to make it 2-2. For the next ten minutes or so the action was back-and-forth and intense -- a playoff-type game.

With 5:16 left, Rinaldi notched his second of the game, connecting on a great back-door feed from Ricciardi to go up 3-2. Things didn't look good for Choate as the host Lions had a relentless forecheck going, but the Wild Boars kept hanging in there. With roughly a minute remaining in regulation, Choate head coach Pat Dennehy pulled Tucker for the extra skater and, with nine seconds left, the Wild Boars just threw the puck at the Kent net and Germain was there to bury the shot to send the game to OT.

Choate may have had momentum going into OT -- they pretty much silenced the rink -- but, just 14 seconds into the extra stanza, Choate was called for a trip. Kent went on the PP, and converted less than a minute in when senior D Bennett Morrison, from the top of the faceoff circle, blasted a slap shot past Tucker.

This was a great regular-season finale for both teams. Choate played with a great deal of heart and its top players -- Powers, Caffrey, Germain, et al -- were more than ready for the challenge. Kent, yet again, showed its depth and strength, often overpowering their opponent along the boards and in front. Today, it was the Rinaldi-Ricciardi combination that shined, but every time we see this team someone else steps up.

Choate misses out on the Elite 8, but finished strongly, winning eight in a row before losing their last two by the slimmest of margins, 1-0 to Loomis on Wednesday, and then today in OT.

@ St. Paul’s 6, Lawrence 4 -- St. Paul's played its fourth game in four days -- and came out with the win. SPS was trailing 4-3 midway through the third, but summoned up the energy they needed -- and struck for three straight goals, the final an empty-netter. Senior David Storto (1g,2a) led the St. Paul's attack with three points. John Laurito (1g,1a), Connor Sodergren (1g,1a), Cam McCusker (2g), and sophomore D Liam Flaherty (2a) each had two points. SPS finishes the regular season with an 18-8-1 NEPSIHA record.

Salisbury 6 @ Canterbury 1 -- Freshman goaltender Nick Sorgio kicked out 27 of 28 shots and senior Neil Robinson (2g,1a), and juniors Kale Kane (1g,2a) and Vimal Sukumaran (1g,2a) each had three-point games to lead Salisbury, which holds the #1 overall seed heading into next week's prep quarterfinals. Senior Derek Barach had two goals.

@ Gunnery 2, Berkshire 1 -- Junior Ryan Dmowski came up big for his team today, scoring both Gunnery goals, the first late in the second, and the game-winner with 51 seconds left in regulation. In net, both goalies -- Berkshire senior George Blinick (33/35) and Gunnery senior Matthew Schenider (28/29) -- were strong. On the winning goal, Dmowski, a UMass-Lowell recruit, picked up a pass in the neutral zone, juked a Berkshire d-man, carried it into the zone down the right side, cut toward the net and fired a quick-release, high-velocity snap shot that beat Blinick glove side. Afterward, we spoke to Gunnery head coach Chris Baudo who said, "Berkshire is a very talented team that works well off thier transition game, so we talked a lot (between the second and thrid periods) about having a balanced forechecking and neutral zone game to limit odd-man rushes. I thought we did a great job with that."
Gunnery goes into the Elite 8 with only one loss in their last 16 games.

Nobles 4 @ Milton 2 -- Milton outshot Nobles, 37-22, but came up short in its bid for an upset. Nobles, which never trailed in this game, got strong offensive performances from juniors Cody Todesco (1g,2a) and Miles Wood (2g), and freshman Cam Burke (2a). Andrew Godwin (1g,1a) figured in both of Milton's goals. Nobles sophomore goaltender Brendan Cytulik (35/37) earned the win.

@ Andover 3, Exeter 3 (OT) -- Andover, in a battle for the #8 seed in the Elite 8, took a 3-1 lead when senior D David Belluche drilled a shot from the right point past Exeter senior goalie Jack Parsons at 2:41 of the second.

But that would be as close as they would get, as Exeter sophomore D Spenser Young carried the puck with speed into the Andover end and spotted sophomore center Devin Moore, who snapped the puck home to make it a one-goal game at 11:19 of the second.

It stood there until late in the third, when, with 3:34 left on the clock, Exeter PG Kevin Neiley backhanded home a rebound from a scrum in front to tie the game at 3-3.

That's how it wound up, though OT was interesting, as both teams took penalties. But the penalty killing for both teams came through.

We hadn't seen Andover since the first half of the season, and can report that this was a different team, a team totally unlike the team that lost to Exeter 7-1 back in early January. As a matter of fact, Andover has lost only one game in its last 13 -- they finished the season on an 8-1-4 run. They competed hard, and if the season were a week or two longer they might have created some real damage.

"Exeter is a good, well-coached team,." said Andover head coach Dean Boylan afterward. "Both teams competed hard. I told our team to be proud, we would have liked to have won this game, but the effort was truly there. We have come a long way as a team."

Exeter head coach Dana Barbin spoke of the importance of the late second-period goal -- when the sophomores, Young and Moore, combined to make it a one-goal game, and give his team a chance in the third.

"This was a game between two archrivals," Barbin said, "and Andover has played as well as anybody the last six or seven weeks. And they did that again tonight. We didn't outplay them. Jack Parsons held the fort for us."

Parsons, a senior, kicked out 27 of 30 to earn the win. For Andover, junior Erik Wurman was very good, too, stopping 21 of 24.

@ KUA 4, Proctor 2 -- Junior Brendan Riley had a goal and an assist and senior goaltender Paul Leger had 21 saves to lead Kimball Union to the championship of the 2014 Lakes Region Tournament. KUA outshot Proctor, 39-23.

Among the Teams Under Consideration, Dexter and Belmont Hill had Saturday off.

Taft 8 @ Hotchkiss 2 -- Taft enters the Large School Tournament with wins in three of its last four games, and there was a lot of offense tonight. Juniors Dan Quirk (2g,1a), Marcus Mollica (1g,2a), Ross Colton (3a) each had three points. Senior Cole Maier (2g), junior Peter Straub (1g,1a) had two points apiece. And sophomore Alex Milardo (1g) notched his first career point with the Rhinos.

Williston-Northampton 4 @ Pomfret 2 -- Juniors Rourke Ferguson (1g,1a), Brandon Bork (2a), and Tyler Scroggins (2a) led the Williston attack. Senior goaltender Tim Nowacki (24/26) earned the win.

Hebron 4 @ Kents Hill 3 -- The Lumberjacks came from behind to win this one, and snap a three-game losing streak in the process. After a first period in which the teams skated off tied 3-3, there was only one other goal in the game, a second-period tally by PG Jon Pallotta, Hebron's leading scorer.

@ St. Mark's 4, Groton 2 -- Freshman Ethan Kimball scored the game-winning goal at 14:38 of the third period. Despite that, Groton goes on to the playoffs while St. Mark's doesn't. Both teams had/are having good seasons. St. Mark's finishes 16-8-4 in NEPSIHA play and has come a long way in the past few years. Groton finishes 15-7-3 and moves on to the NEPSIHA small-schooll tournament.

Brooks 3 @ BB&N 3 -- BB&N senior D Connor Hegarty scored with 33 seconds left in regulation to lift the Knights to the tie.

Millbrook 5 @ Brunswick 3 -- In the consolation game at the Empire Cup, junior Jacob Moreau (2g) and senior Rory Gagnon (1g,1a) led Millbrook. PG goaltender Josh Davies stopped 22 of 24 shots for the win. Millbrook, 16-12-0 in NEPSIHA play, moves on to the Small School Tournament.

@ Tilton 5, Vermont Academy 2 -- In the Lakes Region Tournament consolation game, Tilton got offense from senior F Thad Asa (2g), senior D CJ Mulieri (2a), junior Justin Goldman (1g,1a), and sophomore Nick Waring (1g,1a). Rams' senior goaltender Kanoa Cook stopped 22 of 24 for the win.

The Weekend’s Key Games

This weekend’s games between Teams Under Consideration (TUC) – and we count four Top 16 vs. Top 16 games -- will have the greatest direct impact on the JSPR. And two of those four games are particularly crucial.

Berkshire @ Gunnery (Sat., 4:00 pm)
— This game is important not for the direct JSPR comparison, because if Gunnery wins (unless they jump Berkshire in RPI), they still won’t win the direct comparison with Berkshire. But whoever does win this game will improve their record vs. TUCs, causing a ripple that could significantly affect other comparisons.

Choate @ Kent (Sat., 2:30 pm) -- If Kent beats Choate they will essentially prevent the Wild Boars from getting into the Elite 8. Again, it isn’t about the direct comparison, as Kent is already beating Choate in their JSPR and a Kent win wouldn’t change that. Choate is winning a bunch of JSPR matchups because they have a very high TUC record (#4 in TUC).  If that changes negatively Choate will have a difficult time making the Elite 8 because they could suddenly find themselves losing some of the comparisons they currently hold because of a lower TUC record.  If Kent loses, they will most likely still be in the Top 8. However, because their TUC record will drop, a loss could cost them home ice on Wednesday.

St. Paul’s @ Thayer (Fri., 4:00 pm) — After St. Paul’s OT loss to Dexter last night, this one might not matter as much as it did 24 hours ago. We think it is unlikely that St. Paul’s can make the Elite 8 at this point, as their RPI has dropped and they would need outside help to get in. As for Thayer, a loss will affect their seeding, but they are pretty much a lock for the Elite 8.

Exeter vs. Andover (Sat., 4:15 pm) — If Exeter loses they could drop, but probably not out of the Top 8. It looks like Andover would need a lot of outside help in order to get into the Top 8.

Other things to watch for:

-- Can Westminster stay in the top 16?  If Rivers or Groton is able to hop over them that could have a big impact on the TUC’s.

-- Things are also pretty close in RPI between Nobles, Berkshire and Cushing. The RPI is the driver for a lot of things, so changes there can definitely cause shifts, but the reality at this point is that if the ‘expected’ teams win across the board, then there probably won’t be huge RPI swings at this point. However, anyone can beat anyone and a loss by one team can have a snowball effect across the board.

-- We think that Salisbury, Kent, Thayer, Exeter, and Nobles are pretty likely for the Elite 8.  Salisbury is the only team we feel is a lock for home ice next Wednesday. Three of the other top teams (Kent, Exeter, and Thayer) are playing games against Top 16 teams, and with that there could be lots of possible outcomes for home ice.  Throw Nobles into that mix and it really looks like the only team that is pretty set is Salisbury

Latest RPI & JSPR Ratings

Here are the NEPSIHA RPI and JSPR rankings as of Thursday noontime.

RPI Through Games of Wed. Feb. 19, 2014

JSPR Through Games of Wed. Feb. 19, 2014

Wed. Feb. 19 Highlights
@ Exeter 3, Pomfret 2 (OT) – Exeter, in a battle for home ice in the Elite 8, almost got skunked today, but an OT goal by Teddy Hart saved their bacon (forgive the metaphors). After Pomfret senior Andrew Slotnick tied the game with 29 seconds left and the goalie pulled, Exeter was able to come through in OT as PG David White’s saucer pass between two Pomfret D sent Teddy Hart in on the breakaway for the game-winner. The story of the game was Pomfret senior goalie Chris Johnson, who kicked out 45 of 48 shots.

“I have the utmost respect for (Pomfret head coach) Bruce Paro and his team,” said Exeter head coach Dana Barbin afterward. “They battled their ass off from the opening drop. They played a great game. They played hard. It wasn’t like Exeter was not awake. On another day, against another goalie, we might have had eight goals. But (Johnson) was outstanding. He played a great game.” Exeter improves to 22-4-2 in NEPSIHA play, while Pomfret falls to 3-20-2.

Kent 4 @ Deerfield 3 (OT) – Kent clinched the 2014 Founders’ League title, but they had to battle for it. After Kent went up 2-0 in the first on Max Kaufman and Phil Klitirinos goals, Deerfield came right back in the second as seniors Camil Blanchet and David Lackner tied it at 2-2 going, and that’s how things stood going into the third. After James Ricciardi put Kent up 3-2, Deerfield’s Lackner came back late in the third to tie it up at 3-3 and send it to OT, where senior Mitch Allen, from Lewis Zerter-Gossage, scored the game-winner. Kent is now 19-3-1 in NEPSIHA play and finishes the season Saturday, hosting Choate. Deerfield is 9-10-4 in NEPSIHA play and will look to reach the .500 level Friday at Salisbury and then back home vs. Westminster in Saturday’s finale.

Loomis-Chaffee 1 @ Choate 0 – Loomis junior goalie Nick Desimone’s 36-save shutout put a halt to Choate’s eight-game winning streak. The only goal the Pelicans needed came at 4:16 of the third period when senior forward Thomas Chateauvert (great last name, by the way) scored his second goal of the game, with assists going to senior F Henry Tobin and junior D Zach Giuttari. This is a tough loss for Choate, as they are on the bubble for a spot in the Elite 8 – and have to go on the road to Kent for Saturday’s regular season finale. Choate junior G Andrew Tucci (23/24) was today’s hard-luck loser.

Salisbury 8 @ Hotchkiss 4 – Salisbury, entering the third period in a 4-4 tie, got four unanswered goals to win its tenth in a row. Senior F Derek Barach (2g,2a) and sophomore D Griffin Luce (1g,2a) led the way offensively. Only four of the 12 goals in this game were even-strength, as the two teams combined for 22 penalties. Senior F Evan Smith (1g,1a) and senior D-men Will Toffey (1g,1a)  and Adam Baughman (2a) each had two points for the Knights.

@ St. Paul’s 4, Belmont Hill 1 – St. Paul’s, on fire for the last month, won its seventh in a row and continued its quest for a spot in the Elite 8. Senior Cam McCusker (2g,1a) and junior Connor Sodergren (1g,2a) each had three points. Junior goalie Nathan Colannino kicked out 27 of 28, continuing his strong play of late.

Andover 3 @ NMH 1 – In a battle of two teams fighting for playoff position, visiting Andover, behind a 31-save effort from junior Erik Wurman, went on the road and improved to 15-6-3 in NEPSIHA play. NMH dropped to 16-9-1.

@ Berkshire 4, Millbrook 1 – Berkshire, 12-2-2 in their last 16 games, took a big step toward securing a spot in the Elite 8 today. Seniors Charlie Corcoran (3a) and Craig Puffer (2g), and soph Barclay Gammill (1g,1a) led the attack. Senior George Blinick earned the win in net. Berkshire had the edge in shots, 36-15. Berkshire finishes the regular season at Gunnery on Saturday at 4:00, a big game for two teams virtually deadlocked in the standings.

Gunnery 2 @ Westminster 1 (OT) – Gunnery got a goal from senior Kevin Darrar at 4:56 of OT to edge a Westminster team which had only one loss in its previous six games. Sophomore G Trevin Kozlowski (26/27) earned the win. Gunnery, now 13-1-1 over its last 15, took a big step toward securing a spot in the Elite 8. They have a huge game Saturday, hosting Berkshire at 4:00 pm.

@ Thayer 6, Milton 5 – Thayer, playing at home, held a 5-2 lead early in the third period of this one, but Milton sophomore – and leading scorer – Trevor Turnbull struck for a natural hat trick in a span of  8:41 in the third period to tie up the Tigers. However, Thayer junior F Ryan Pfeffer came through with a huge goal with 57 seconds left in regulation to allow his team to escape with the win. Thayer, now 20-3-0 and in the driver’s seat for home ice in the Elite 8, hosts St. Paul’s Friday and then travels to St. Seb’s on Saturday for the regular season finale.

Dexter 3 @ Holderness 3 (OT) – Host Holderness, on a goal from senior D Steve Wilk, took a 3-2 third period lead, but Dexter junior F Sam D’Antuono was able to get it back and allow the visitors to escape with a 3-3 tie. Dexter junior Ryan Donato notched his 33rd and 34th goals of the season. He leads New England prep hockey in that category. Dexter, which will go on to the playoffs, plays its regular-season finale at St. Paul’s Thursday afternoon.

@ Nobles 7, Governor’s 1 – Nobles, making a push for home ice in the Elite 8, improved to 19-6-1 in NEPSIHA play with today’s win. Junior Cal Burke (2g,1a) had three points, while fellow juniors Cody Todesco (2g) and Miles Wood (2a) each had two points. Freshman Cam Burke (2a), soph Luke Stevens (1g,1a), and senior D JC Brassard (1g,1a) also had two points. Nobles, which outshot Gov’s 46-20, finishes up the regular season at Milton on Saturday (4:15 pm).

@ Cushing 10, New Hampton 2 – Junior Jake Simons had a hat trick and senior Matt Hoover and sophomore Max Brainin each had two goals to lead the Penguins. Soph Trevor Mallett had both of New Hampton’s goals. Cushing, 20-8-0 in NEPSIHA play and battling with St. Paul’s and Choate to squeeze into the Elite 8, finishes the regular season Saturday at Berwick (1:00 pm).

@ Taft 7, Trinity-Pawling 5 – Junior forwards Dan Quirk (2g,1a) and soph Sam Nestor (1g,2a) led the Rhinos attack. For T-P, senior Johnny Coughlin had two goals.

Groton 4 @ Middlesex 1 – Sophomore Michael Brown (2g,2a) and junior Ace Cowans  (1g,2a) – Groton’s leading scorers – came up big today, as Groton improved to 14-6-3 in NEPSIHA play. Senior Matt Pompa (17/18) earned the win.

@ Avon Old Farms 6, Canterbury 4 – Avon, behind junior Chase Zieky (2g,2a) and soph Tyler Carangelo (1g,3a) snapped its six-game losing streak. PG CJ Grinnell scored a pair of goals for the Saints.

Rivers 5 @ Brooks 1 – Senior D Miles Gendron and junior F Joe Sacco each had two goals -- and junior Ryan Colena stopped 17 of 18 shots -- to lead Rivers to its sixth win in a row. Rivers is now 16-9-1 in NEPSIHA play. Brooks is 16-10-1.

Worcester Academy 4, Portsmouth Abbey 3 – In a Holt League play-in game, visiting Worcester, behind a pair of goals from senior Michael Cusato and a 33-save effort from Jordan Davies, edged host Portsmouth Abbey. Sophomore Josh Vertentes notched a pair of goals for PA.

@ St. Sebastian’s 2, Lawrence 0 – Junior Danny Higgins stopped all 33 shots he faced as the Arrows pulled a game above .500 in NEPSIHA play. Senior Corey Ronan scored both goals, the second an empty-netter. Now a game above .500 in NEPSIHA play at 12-11-1, the Arrows finish up with a tough one, hosting Thayer on Saturday.

@ Tilton 2, Vermont Academy 1 – Junior G Andrew Hermann kicked out 18 of 19 shots and junior Justin Goldman and senior Nick Tomljenovic scored the Rams’ goals. Vermont Academy senior G Simon Leiva, who has had a strong season, was the hard-luck loser, kicking out 40 of the 42 shots he faced.

Brewster Academy 7 @ Hebron 3 – Senior F Joe Osaka, and junior F Conor Caffrey, and junior D Julien Choiniere-Denicourt each had two goals to lead Brewster.

Williston-Northampton 7 @ Albany Academy 2 -- PG Max Willman (2g,2a), and juniors Tyler Scroggins (1g,2a), Brandon Borges (1g,2a), and Brandon Bork (2g) led the attack. Williston, which outshot the Cadets 42-21, is now an even .500 (10-10-2) in NEPSIHA play. They finish vs. Winchendon Friday, and at Pomfret on Saturday.

St. Mark’s 6 @ St. George’s 1 – St. Mark’s got goals from six different scorers today to improve to 15-8-4 in NEPSIHA play.

Berwick 6 @ Pingree 2 -- Senior Cam Toohey had a hat trick, classmate Alex Hopkins had four assists, and junior Lucas Michaud had a goal and two assists to lead Berwick’s  offense. Junior goalie Joe Lazzaro stopped 25 of 27 for the win. Berwick, now 14-8-1 in NEPSIHA play, finishes the season with a game Friday against Governor’s (@ UNH) and a home game Saturday vs. Cushing.

Latest RPI and JSPR

Here are the latest numbers for the NEPSIHA playoffs. These include games through Sunday Feb. 16. They do not include Monday's games. If they did, you would see a shift at the top, with Salisbury moving up to #1 and Kent dropping to #2 in both RPI and JSPR. Although six of the 16 teams rated in JSPR played yesterday, there appears to be, below the #1-2 flip-flop, only the tiniest of shifts. Tomorrow, Kimball Union is the only one of the 16 not playing, so we'll see what happens then.

Berkshire Stuns Top-Ranked Kent, 6-3

In last night’s prep poll, we highlighted the fact that Kent had held opponents to three or fewer goals in 18 of their 21 games. A noteworthy record, to be sure, but Berkshire has been just as stingy lately. Since a 4-2 loss to Nobles on Dec. 28th, the Bears reeled off a string of 13 straight games in which they, too, held opponents to three or fewer goals. That, however, came to a crashing end on Saturday, when Berkshire traveled to Westminster and was tagged with a 5-1 loss. Today, though, the Bears, playing at home on their big sheet, came out with a purpose and blitzed the #1 team in prep hockey 6-3.

Sophomore Barclay Gammill, a 5’9” ’97 forward from New Canaan, Conn., had four goals for Berkshire.

We were not at this game, but had a chance to talk with both head coaches afterward.

Berkshire head coach Dan Driscoll said, “I thought we played our most complete game of the season. We had good shape and structure in all three zones, and we were patient and welcomed the grind in our end. And we were opportunistic with the chances we did have."

On Gammill, who Driscoll has playing with seniors Charlie Corcoran and Craig Puffer: “It was a coming out party for him. He’s a cerebral player with great hands and a knack around the net. He can really shoot it. He was called up from the JV team halfway through last season. He worked hard and developed. Today was the culmination of his efforts. It was fun to watch.”

Driscoll has Tipper Higgins, who played all of last season with Corcoran and Puffer,  playing with fellow seniors Nick O’Connor and Jeff Thompson. “I did that because I was trying to get a little more balance and depth. That line was also great tonight.”

“I thought we were disciplined in all three zones – especially the neutral zone, where I felt we limited their ability to attack on the rush. We limited their number of shots.”

“The opportunities we had, we capitalized on. It’s big win for us.”

Kent head coach Dale Reinhardt, said, “(Berkshire) is a good team with crafty forwards. They outplayed us and they outworked us. Our guys didn’t have their legs and we struggled to get into the game. They were definitely the better team today. We were lucky to get out of the first period at 1-1. And then when they scored a couple to go up 3-1 in the second and we tried to play catch-up, we just couldn’t do it. They were the better team.”

“They clogged up the neutral zone well and gave us a very hard time. We kept trying to skate through the neutral zone and that certainly impacted us.”

We asked Reinhardt about senior goaltender Stephen Morrissey, who has been a major part of Kent’s success this season.

“It wasn’t Steve’s best game. He gave up a soft goal or two but they also scored on a couple of point-blank shots. He’s been so great for us all season, but he’s not going to have his best game every single day. A goalie needs his teammates to help him out sometimes, but that didn’t happen today. Everybody on the team is better than they showed. I thought it was a poor effort. I would say poor mental preparation hurt us more than anything.”

Sat. Feb. 15 Highlights

North Andover, Mass. – A goal by PG Robert Devaney – his second of the game -- with a minute left in regulation lifted a surging Andover team to a 3-2 win over host Brooks today.

In an entertaining back-and-forth game, Brooks held a 2-1 lead until late in the third, but Andover kept the pressure on and got the tying goal from senior Michael Lata with 3:31 to play, followed shortly thereafter by Devaney’s game winner.

Early on, both teams had stretches during which they carried the play. Andover’s top line of Tommy Bishop, Lata, and Devaney was particularly good.

Brooks got on the board first, when sophomore D Connor Moore beat two Andover players and fed sophomore forward Henry Cormier on the back door for a tap-in at 10:15 of the first. Andover came back to tie the game a little over a minute later when Devaney finished off a nice passing sequence, beating Brooks junior goalie Max Prawdzik low to the blocker side. Lata, and senior D Michael Kim picked up assists on the play.

In the second period both teams had solid chances but both goalies, Prawdzik and Andover junior Erik Wurman, came up with big saves. Brooks took a 2-1 lead on a nice breakaway move, as senior defenseman Zach St. Pierre stepped up and stole the puck at the Brooks blue line and fed sophomore forward Paul Capozzi, who tucked it through Wurman’s five-hole.

A boarding penalty assessed to Brooks with just eight seconds left in the second carried over to the third, but Brooks dug deep and killed it off – Prawdzik came up with some nice saves on point-blank rebounds. Even after Brooks killed off the penalty, Andover kept coming hard, transitioning well, forechecking hard, keeping pucks in the Brooks end, and keeping plays alive. Late in the third, Lata walked into the low left faceoff circle and roofed one short side past Prawdzik’s glove to tie the game at 2-2. On the next shift, Wurman came up big for Andover as Brooks junior forward Matt Serrao blocked a shot at the point and took off on a breakaway. Faking right, and shooting back low across the grain, Serrao’s shot was denied by Wurman, who got a pad on it to tip it wide of the post. Shortly after, Andover got the game-winner when Brooks turned the puck over in their end and Devaney finished off a nice rush. Brooks had a couple of chances with Prawdzik pulled for the extra attacker in the final minute of play, but Andover made it tough to penetrate the zone, got a couple of clears, and ran out the clock.

This was a good effort for both teams. For Brooks, the loss snapped a three-game winning streak, while Andover won its fourth in a row and is now 7-1-3 over their last 11 games as they make a late-season push.

@ Northfield-Mt. Hermon 5, Loomis-Chaffee 3 – Senior Brandon Palacio (2g), PG Matt Greenwood (1g,1a), and sophomore d-man Jamie Dorsey (1g,1a) each had two points for the #10-ranked Hoggers, who are 6-1-1 over their last eight games. Loomis has lost three in a row since edging Kent 5-4 a week ago.

Kimball Union 4 @ Cushing 3 (OT) – A Tyler Bird goal at 3:22 of OT lifted Kimball Union to the OT win over #8-ranked Cushing. In addition to Bird (1g,1a), seniors AJ Greer (1g,1a) and Joey Dudek (2a) each had two points for the Wildcats. Senior Paul Leger (34/37) earned the win in net. Sophomores Bailey Conger (1g,1a) and David Cotton (1g,1a) each had two points for Cushing. KUA is undefeated in its last six (5-0-1), while Cushing suffered its fourth loss in a row.

Choate 3 @ Taft 0 – The Wild Boars got second period goals from senior Joey Caffrey and soph Brendan Murphy, and added an empty-netter in the third for the 3-0 margin of victory. Junior Jeremy Germain had a couple of assists. Choate junior G Andrew Tucci posted the 28-save shutout. Taft freshman Andrew Farrier (35/37) was the hard-luck loser. For Choate, this was their seventh consecutive win.

@ Proctor 5, New Hampton 1 – Freshman D Reilly Walsh (1g,2a) figured in three of the Hornets’ five goals. Junior goaltender Beau Collins kicked out 26 of 27 shots for the win.

@ Westminster 5, Berkshire 1Senior goaltender Zac Hamilton stopped 27 of 28 shots to lead surging Westminster past #6-ranked Berkshire. Junior Jack Fitzgerald had two goals – one even-strength and one SHG – and soph Taggart Corriveau also had two goals (his second was an empty-netter) to lead Westminster, which has won three in a row. Berkshire saw its five-game unbeaten streak come to an end.

@ Rivers 6, Middlesex 2 – Junior Joe Sacco (2g,1a) had a three-point afternoon to help lead Rivers, which won its fifth in a row, past Middlesex. Junior Hunter Dempsey (1g,1a), and seniors Steve VanSiclen (1g,1a) and Miles Gendron (2a) each had two points for Rivers.

@ Salisbury 7, Avon Old Farms 3 – Seniors Neil Robinson (2g,1a) and Evan Smith (1g,2a) each had three points. Seniors Mitchell Smith (2g), Derek Barach (2a), and Will Toffey (2a) each had two points. So, too, did juniors Vimal Sukumaran (1g,1a), and Kale Kane (2a). #2-ranked Salisbury, which has won nine in a row, outshot Avon 38-18. Avon, which has lost six in a row – and nine of ten – got a pair of goals from sophomore Tyler Carangelo.

@ Exeter 4, Deerfield 2 – A Henry Hart PPG at 15:52 of the second period broke open a 2-2 tie and sent #3-ranked Exeter, which has won seven of its last eight, on to victory. Exeter got goals from four different scorers while Deerfield got both of its goals, one a shorty, from senior Trevor Yates. Sophomore D Trevor Cosgrove had a goal and an assist for Exeter.

Brunswick 7, Kents Hill 2 – In a game played at Colby College, Brunswick freshman Christian LeSueur notched two goals and added an assist to lead his team to the win. Senior F Sebbi Foster (2g), senior D Mark Esposito (1g,1a), and sophs Matt Sealy (1g,1a) and Colin Slyne (1g,1a) each had two-point days. Junior G Matteo Esposito (28/30) got the win in net.

@ Tilton 5, Hebron 0 – Junior Justin Robertson scored a pair of goals to lead the Rams.

Millbrook 9 @ Kingswood-Oxford 2 – Seniors Brett Supinski (2g,1a) and Aidan Parker (1g,2a), and juniors Brett Barry (2g,1a) and John Buckley (1g,2a) each had three points for Millbrook. Freshman Chris Adamsons had both K-O goals.

@ Gunnery 10, Albany Academy 0  -- Seniors Kevin Darrar (3g) and Nathan Sucese (1g,2a) and junior Alec Mehr (2g,2a) led the attack up front. Junior d-men Mike Lee (3a) and Max Luukko (2a) added offense from the back end. Senior goalie Matthew Schneider posted a 17-save shutout while his teammates put 51 shots on the Albany Academy net. #5-ranked Gunnery has won 12 of 13, its only loss in that span being an OT loss to Salisbury.

Hotchkiss 2 @ Trinity-Pawling 0 – The Bearcats got goals from senior F Sam Rice in the second, and junior D Evan Korizis. Sophomore goaltender Kyle St. Denis posted a 23-save shutout.

Groton 7 @ St. George’s 2 – Junior Ace Cowans had two goals and an assist, and senior goaltender Matt Pompa kicked out 27 of 29 shots to earn the win. Groton is 5-1-1 over its last seven games.

@ Kent 8, Canterbury 2 – The Saints’ eight game undefeated streak (7-0-1) came to a crashing end against #1-ranked Kent. Senior Phil Klitirinos (2g,2a) had four points, while seniors Mitchell Allen (2g,1a) and Lewis Zerter-Gossage (1g,2a) and sophomore Satchel Clendenin (3 assists, but extra credit for a great name) made big contributions. Kent outshot Canterbury 41-25.

Wed. Feb. 12 Highlights

Westminster 3 @ Loomis-Chaffee 0 – After a scoreless first period, Westminster struck for two second period goals – one from sophomore Brian Smyth and one from junior Jack Fitzgerald. Senior Mario Benicky added the final goal in the third. Junior D Will Brophy had a pair of assists. Westminster senior Zac Hamilton got the shutout, as Westminster outshot Loomis 30-17.  This, we should point out, is not the same Westminster team that started the season 0-3. They’re young and they went through their growing pains early, but are playing very good hockey now, and look to be even tougher for opponents to deal with over the next couple of years. There’s a good reason college recruiters have been following them around non-stop lately.

“I thought we managed the puck well, especially in the first two periods,” said Westminster head coach Tim Joncas afterward. “Our structure in all three zones  was good. Overall, it was a very solid game. Not a lot of flash, but very effective. Zac (Hamilton) played the way he has to, and I thought our transition game was good; we got a lot of opportunities off the rush.”

Loomis head coach J.R. Zavisza was less than thrilled. “Westy is a really good team and any team that doesn’t show up and play with passion won’t win against them,” he said. “We didn’t bring energy today.”

@ Andover 6, Cushing 3 – Andover, which has come on strong in the last month, going 5-1-3 since a Jan. 17th loss to Thayer, got goals from six different scorers today to send #8-ranked Cushing to their third consecutive loss. Junior Erik Wurman kicked out 30 of 33 for the win. Cushing outshot Andover 33-20, but couldn’t keep the puck out of their own net. Andover is now 12-6-3 in NEPSIHA competition.

@ Choate 5, Avon Old Farms 3 – Seniors Owen Powers and Joey Caffrey each had two goals and two assists, and junior goaltender Sam Tucker stopped 26 of 28 to lead the Wild Boars. These are two teams going in opposite directions as Choate (now 12-5-3 in NEPSIHA games) won its sixth in a row, while Avon lost its fifth in a row.

NMH 7 @ Exeter 3 – NMH, which lost 1-0 to #3-ranked Exeter on Saturday, journeyed to New Hampshire and took the second half of a home-and-home series today. The Hoggers trailed 2-1 late in the second, but struck for five unanswered goals to win this one going away. Junior Ben Freeman (2g,3a) had five points, and senior Kevin Dazkevich (3g,1a) had four points to lead NMH. Junior goaltender Conor O’Brien (24/27) earned the win. NMH has now gone 5-1-1 in its last seven games, and is 15-7-1 in NEPSIHA play.

Kimball Union 6 @ Proctor 3 – Host Proctor had a 2-0 lead at the first intermission but couldn’t hold it, as KUA came back with five unanswered goals en route to the 6-3 win. Seniors AJ Greer (1g,1a) and Tyler Bird (1g,1a), junior Jack McCarthy (1g,1a), and soph George Sennott (2a) each had two points to lead the Wildcats’ attack. For Proctor, soph Derek Tillotson had two goals, both assisted by fellow soph Jake Pappalardo. KUA outshot Proctor 19-15. KUA, which is undefeated (4-0-1) in its last five, got Joey Dudek back for today’s game. Dudek, who had an assist, separated his shoulder vs. Governor's Jan. 12th at Fenway Park, and missed the next 11 games.

Millbrook 2 @ Trinity-Pawling 1 – Seniors Brett Supinski (1g,1a) and Ryan Harper (1g,1a), and junior Brett Barry (2a) teamed up for both Millbrook goals today. PG Josh Davies kicked out 36 of 37 shots for the win.

@ Kent 6, Hotchkiss 1 – Senior Phil Klitirinos (2g,1a) paced the #1-ranked Lions attack and, in net,  senior Stephen Morrissey (15/15) and junior John Gnan (9/10) combined for the win.

St. Paul’s 4 @ St. Sebastian’s 2 – St. Paul’s, which has won five straight and eight of its last nine, got a pair of goals from junior Connor Sodergren and a 31-save performance from junior goalie Nathan Colannino. St. Sebastian’s outshot St. Paul’s 33-19 but came out on the losing end.

@ Rivers 3, St. Mark’s 1 – St. Mark’s, which came in with a five-game winning streak, took a 1-0 lead into the second period, but Rivers got three goals from three different scorers in a span of 4:03 to take this one. Rivers, which won its fourth straight, got 17 saves from junior Ryan Colena.

Canterbury 3 @ Williston-Northampton 1 – Canterbury, on the road and trailing 1-0 entering the third, got a pair of powerplay goals to take a 2-1 lead and then added an empty-netter to seal the deal. Senior Christian Short (26/27) got the win; senior Tim Nowacki (33/35) took the loss. Canterbury is undefeated in its last eight games (7-0-1). The only blemish in that time was a 0-0 tie vs. #6-ranked Berkshire. Williston is winless in its last four (0-3-1).

@ Thayer 3, Tabor 2 – #4 Thayer got goals from underclassmen Ty Amonte, Adam Gaudette, and Monte Graham to take a 3-1 lead. Tabor junior Wiley Knight converted with the goalie pulled and 53 seconds on the clock to make things interesting. Sophomore Erik Foley (1g,1a) and senior Joseph Slovak (2a) figured in both of the Seawolves’ goals. Sophomore Mike Royer (22/24) got the win for the Tigers.

North Yarmouth Academy 3 @ Bridgton Academy (Prep Team) 1 – 7th grader Oliver Wahlstrom (2g,1a) and soph Josh Chapman (3a) figured in all three NYA goals. Freshman Jeremy Thelven (21/22) picked up the win. NYA held a 39-22 edge in shots.

@ Brunswick 5, Albany Academy 0 – Freshman Christian LeSueur (1g,3a) and junior Michael Faulkner (1g,2a) led the Brunswick attack. Junior Matteo Esposito posted a 17-save shutout.

Brooks 2 @ Groton 1 – Brooks, entering the third period down 1-0 on the road, got goals from juniors PJ Kelleher and KJ Moore – both were assisted by junior d-man Chris White – to pull out the win and improve to 15-8-1 in NEPSIHA play. Groton falls to 12-6-3. Junior Max Prawdzik (24/25) earned the win; senior Matt Pompa (31/33) took the loss.

Dexter 4 @ Berwick 1 – Junior Ryan Donato (1g,2a) and soph Kevin Hock (1g,2a) each had three points, and junior Sam D’Antuono (1g,1a) had two to lead #9-ranked Dexter to their 10th win in their last 11 games. Senior Pat Fraser (20/21) got the win.

@ Taft 3, Deerfield 2 -- Taft got goals from three different scorers to pull within a game of .500 (9-10-2), while Deerfield falls a game under .500 at 7-8-3. Senior Camil Blanchet scored both of the Big Green's goals -- one short-handed, and one on the PP. Both of these teams had played OT road games 24 hours earlier. Taft coach Dan Murphy felt his team, which trailed 1-0 after one period, was a little flat, and was also concerned freshman goalie Andrew Farrier (11/12), who had faced 52 Salisbury shots on Tuesday (see today's USHR News), might tire by the third, so he put in junior Joseph Lissak to start the second and the Rhinos scored three of the next four to earn the win. Lissak stopped 21 of 22.

Berkshire 9 @ Pomfret 2 – Senior Nick O’Connor (3g,1a) led the Bears' attack and sophomore goaltender Sam Merrill stopped 22 of 24 to lead #6 Berkshire, which is 4-0-1 in its last five.

@ Winchendon 7, Holderness 1 – Juniors Jarod Fitzpatrick (3g) and Brian Brooks (2g,1a) led the Wapitis attack, and PG goalie Tyler Morrel (25/26) took care of business at the other end.

@ Belmont Hill 4, Milton 1 – This was a 1-1 game going into the third, but Belmont Hill scored three unanswered goals, the last an empty-netter. Junior Charlie McConnell had a pair of goals – the game-tying goal and the GWG, to be precise – and classmate Charlie Michalowski had the assist on both of them. Bel Hill is 4-1-1 over its last six games.

Middlesex 6 @ Portsmouth Abbey 1 – Junior D Harrison Markell (1g,3a) and junior F Eric Shaw (1g,2a) helped Middlesex snap a four-game losing streak.

@ Brewster 4, Tilton 4 (OT) – Brewster had a 4-1 lead entering the third period, but the visiting Rams scored three unanswered goals – the final one by Jason Bogacz – to send it to overtime, where nothing was decided. The goal by Bogacz, a freshman, was his first of the season.

Lawrence 2 @ Governor’s 0 – Lawrence senior John Stratton kicked out all 28 shots he faced to earn the shutout.

@ Vermont Academy 3, New Hampton 1 – Sophomore Justin Cole (1g,1a) figured in two of the three VA goals and senior Simon Leiva picked up the win. Vermont has won three in a row.

@ Noble & Greenough 7, BB&N 1 -- #7 Nobles won its fifth in a row behind three-point games from junior forwards Miles Wood (2g,1a) and Cody Todesco (3a), and senior d-man JC Brassard (1g,2a). Soph Brendan Cytulik (22/23) got the W.

@ Pingree 3, Worcester Academy 1 – Junior Chris Devito stopped 23 of 24 shots to earn the win.

Salisbury 14, Kingswood-Oxford 0 – Salisbury had the edge in shots, 86-6. This was the ninth game K-O has played against Founders’ League opponents this season – they have one more – and to date the aggregate score is 79-5. No one benefits from playing these games. It’s a waste of gasoline and motor oil -- and puts unnecessary wear on tire treads.

Sat. Feb. 8 Highlights
@ Choate 3, Westminster 2 (OT) – Sophomore Henry Marshall’s OT blast lifted the Wild Boars to the win. Westminster had held a 2-1 lead early in the third after sophomore Taggart Corriveau scored on a snap shot, but Choate tied it up at 2-2 just minutes later when junior Elliot Polur tapped home a great feed from junior D Vincent Ditmore. Choate junior Sam Tucker (27/29) picked up the win. Westy senior Zac Hamilton (26/29) took the loss. This was a really good game – and a highly-scouted one, too -- with back-and-forth action throughout. With the win, Choate improves to 10-5-3 in NEPSIHA play.

Canterbury 4 @ Cushing 3 – A third-period PPG from senior Mark Bowen – his second of the game -- broke a 3-3 tie and lifted Canterbury to a 4-3 win over #4-ranked Cushing. Cushing outshot Canterbury 50-29 but Saints senior goaltender Christian Short came up big, kicking out 47 shots. Each team incurred 12 penalties, and six of the game’s seven goals were powerplay tallies. Cushing saw its four-game win streak come to an end, while Canterbury, undefeated in its last six, improved to 10-9-1 in NEPSIHA play. Cushing has a chance to bounce back quickly, as they host #2-ranked Salisbury in a 3:00 pm Sunday tilt.

@ BB&N 3, Belmont Hill 1 – Less than 24 hours after upsetting #3-ranked Thayer, Belmont Hill went on the road to Cambridge and came up short against BB&N. The Knights got goals from senior d-men Connor Hegarty and Brien Diffley. Sophmore F Joe DeSimone (1g,1a) had two points. Shots were even at 22-22. Goalies were senior Steven Grinsztein (21 saves) for BB&N, and soph Matthew Barrow (19 saves) for Bel Hill. BB&N improves to 13-8-1 in NEPSIHA play.

Exeter 1 @ NMH 0 -- #5 Exeter, on a first-period goal from PG Patrick Besse, edged #9 NMH. Senior Jack Parsons – with 30 saves – earned the shutout. Hoggers PG Kyle Redmond (36/37) took the loss.

@ Berkshire 6, Governor’s 1 – Senior D Bryan Gerstenfeld, an Army recruit, had four assists, while senior forwards Craig Puffer (1g,1a) and Nate Summers (1g,1a) each had two points to lead the Bears’ offense. Senior George Blinick had 17 saves for the win, as #7-ranked Berkshire, now 14-4-3 in NEPSIHA play, outshot Gov’s 46-18.

@ Rivers 3, Roxbury Latin 0 – Senior F Steve VanSiclen scored two goals and junior D Matt Lombardozzi had three assists to lead the Rivers attack. Junior Ryan Colena (12/12) picked up the win; Roxbury Latin senior Jonathan Marchetti (42/45) was the hard-luck loser.

Rye Country Day 4 @ Portsmouth Abbey 2 – Junior Will Halloran had a pair of goals and senior Michael Mossman kicked out 30 shots for the win.

@ Deerfield 3, Avon Old Farms 1 – Seniors Trevor Yates (2g,1a) and Sam Lafferty (1g,1a) led the Big Green to the .500 mark in NEPSIHA play (7-7-3).

New Hampton 5 @ Kents Hill 3 – PG F Kyle Valliere (1g,2a) and PG D Matt McLelland (2g) led the New Hampton offense, and senior goalie Tim Sestak kicked out 38 of 41 shots for the win.  New Hampton (13-12-2) improves to one game over .500 in NEPSIHA play.

@ Kimball Union 4, Holderness 0 – Sophomore D Ben Finkelstein (2g) and senior forwards Tyler Bird (3a) and AJ Greer (1g,1a) led the Wildcats’ attack. Kimball Union junior goaltender Gavin Nieto (14/14) earned the shutout while Holderness freshman Logan Batemen (52/56) took the loss.

Millbrook 3, Williston 1 – PG goalie Josh Davies kicked out 25 of 26 shots and Millbrook got goals from three different scorers to improve to 12-9-0 in NEPSIHA play.

Dexter 5 @ Tabor 2 -- #10-ranked Dexter was led by junior Ryan Donato (1g,2a) and senior goaltender Pat Fraser (25/27). This was a 2-2 game until senior D Ian Sheridan scored an early second period goal to put Dexter up by a goal. Dexter added a pair of goals in the third.

@ Lawrenceville 3, Bridgton Academy 0L’ville sophomore goaltender Monty Cunningham stopped all 31 shots he faced to earn the shutout.

@ St. Mark’s 9, Middlesex 1Sophs Zach Tsekos (2g,2a), Luke O’Brien (2g,1a), and Owen Allen (2g,1a); junior Adam Lee (3a), and senior Jeff Cyr (2g,1a) led the Lions attack while sophomore goaltender Ryan Ferland kicked out 20 of 21. The Young Lions, who outshot Middlesex 48-21, have won five in a row and are now 14-6-4 in NEPSIHA play. After starting the season 0-3-2, they have only lost three of their last 19 games

@ Gunnery 3, Pomfret 1 -- #6 Gunnery got goals from three different scorers to win for the 11th time in their last 12 games.

Salisbury 3 @ Loomis 1 – A day after knocking off #1 Kent, Loomis took a shot at #2 Salisbury and, although they were in a 1-1 game until late in the third, couldn’t pull it off as Salisbury senior Derek Barach scored his second goal of the game on the powerplay with 2:07 to play. The play came about when Loomis’ Eric Esposito tripped Evan Smith, who was breaking the puck out of his own end. With the ensuing faceoff in Salisbury’s end, senior defenseman Will Toffey, at the top of the umbrella, fed Barach for a one-timer slapshot that caught the top right corner – and sent the water bottle airborne – for one of the season’s better highlight-reel goals. Barach added an empty-netter with 15 seconds remaining to seal the win for Salisbury, now 14-1-4. Senior Evan Smith assisted on all three of Barach’s goals today, and Neil Robinson had a couple of assists as well. Senior Mitchell Datz (21/22) got the win; Loomis senior Nick Kamm (33/35) took the loss.

Hebron 5, Albany Academy 2 – In a neutral site game played at Phillips Exeter, Hebron got a pair of goals from PG Shawn Cameron and a 16-save effort from PG G Luke Tremblay. The Lumberjacks outshot AA, 49-18.

Brooks 4 @ St. George’s 2 – Junior F KJ Moore (1g,1a) and his younger brother, sophomore D Connor Moore (3a) led the Brooks attack. Junior G Max Prawdzik (20/22) earned the win. St. George’s freshman Shane Conlon (39/43) took the loss. Junior Gino Roy scored both of the Dragons’ goals.

@ Nobles 5, Milton 3 – Nobles broke up a 2-2 third period game with three goals. Juniors Miles Wood (2g,1a) and Cody Todesco (1g,2a) each had three points for Nobles, while soph Brendan Cytulik (22/25) got the win. Senior D Chad Malinowski had a pair of goals for the Mustangs.

@ Taft 5, Hotchkiss 2 – Juniors Ross Colton (2g,1a) and Marcus Mollica (1g,2a), and senior Cole Maier (3a) teamed up for three of the Rhinos’ first four goals en route to the 5-2 win. Freshman goalie Andrew Farrier (32/34) picked up the win.

Kent 5 @ Trinity-Pawling 2 – Junior Max Kaufman scored three goals, the last an empty-netter, to lead the #1-ranked Lions to the road win. Senior forwards Louis Zerter-Gossage (1g,1a) and Brendan Soucie (1g,1a), and sophomore D Greg Krisberg (2a) each had two points. Senior G Stephen Morrissey (31/33) earned the win.

Two Great Causes

On Saturday, Cushing Academy will be holding its Fifth Annual Pink the Rink Day to raise money for cancer research.

All three games, culminating in the boy’s game at 5:00 pm vs. Canterbury will be surrounded by events including a raffle for Bruins tickets, hockey memorabilia, and more. The Cushing players will be wearing special jerseys for the event.

Half of the proceeds from the benefit will go to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in memory of the mother of Cushing AD and longtime assistant hockey coach Bill Troy, whose mother, Mary Lou Troy, died of cancer last spring.

The other half of the proceeds will go to Mass General Hospital, in honor of Dolores Boettcher, who is current fighting breast cancer. Dolores is the mother of Cushing assistant athletic trainer April Boettcher, who is organizing Saturday’s event.

The Cushing community, April said, is excited about the opportunity to raise money for “a cause bigger than ourselves.”

If you can’t attend, but would like to make a donation, you can make a check out to: Cushing Academy Pink the Rink and send it to:

Tabor Academy will be hosting Dexter Saturday at 3:30 pm, which will also be “Pippa’s Paint the Rink Pink,” a fundraiser to support Tabor community member Pippa Larsen, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on the day before her first birthday.

Pippa’s mother, Ginger, is a science teacher at Tabor, and her father is an alum (class of ’97). Pippa has a three-year-old sibling, Liv.

All funds will be used to help offset the medical and related costs of the treatment for Pippa, which will likely be two years in duration. Pippa is being treated at Boston Children’s Hospital.

There will be a silent auction and raffle.

If you can’t make it to the game but wish to make a donation, you can make it out to the Pippa Larsen Fund and send it to boys’ head hockey coach Gerry Dineen. The address is:

Snowday

It doesn't look good for Wednesday's slate of games, as the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for pretty much all of New England.

Across Massachusetts, up to 10 inches of snow is expected.

If coaches could email information(at)ushr.com and let us know if your game has been canceled or postponed, we'd be grateful. If the latter, please let us know if you have a makeup date. We have some changes already, and they can be found in the prep composite schedule below.

By the way, the Weather Channel is calling this one Nika, which they are claiming is named for the Greek goddess of victory. When this typist was in middle school, the Greek goddess of victory was Nike -- with an e -- and still is, though perhaps that name was subsequently trademarked by the sneaker guys, assuming one can even trademark a Greek goddess. More likely, the Weather Channel didn't want people to think they were naming storms after sneakers. We can understand that. However, Nika, as in the name of the impending storm, is the ancient Greek word for conquer or victory, which seems like a foreboding name for a winter storm.
