Flood-Marr Tournament -- Nobles Wins First Title Since '92

Sunday Playoffs @ Noble & Greenough:

8:00 am -- 7th Place: Deerfield 5, Westminster 3 -- Andrew Ammon (2g,1a) led the attack.

10:00 am -- 5th Place: Hotchkiss 3, Kimball Union 0 -- Petr Placek, Mike Borge, and George Russell were the scorers.

12:00 pm -- 3rd Place: Salisbury 5, Milton 1-- Salisbury breaks open a 1-1 game with four third-period goals. Three assists for Kyle Hughes. Andy Iles in net for Salisbury; Michael Baldino for Milton.

2:00 pm -- Championship: Nobles 5, Andover 3 -- Nobles, on an early third period goal by junior defenseman Gus Young, took a 4-3 lead en route to a 5-3 win over Phillips Andover in the finale of the 2008 Flood-Marr Tournament. The win gave Nobles its first Flood-Marr title since 1992, and it's second all-time.

Jared Lackey, with a pair of goals, came up big for Nobles; Chris Kreider had a pair for Andover.

This was a fun game to watch. Great tempo, some high end players to keep the level of play high, and several shifts of momentum. Nobles came out hard in the first period, and got on the board just 1:16 in, when Ian Graves took a feed out of the corner; his shot from the point was rebounded home by Billy Arnold. Nobles went up 2-0 at the 10:49 mark when Lackey converted a rebound. Then, less than three minutes after that, Andover took charge, with Kreider taking a short goal-mouth pass from linemate Brooks Dyroff and slipping it past goaltender Gene Lane to cut the Nobles' lead to one. Kreider struck again 57 seconds later on a wraparound, tying the game at 2-2 -- and that's where the period ended. In the second, Nobles struck for another early goal, taking a 3-2 lead when Lackey picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and took off, picking the top corner, and beating Andover goaltender Glenn Stowell cleanly. Andover got it right back 54 seconds later when Dyroff, off a face-off in the Nobles' end, spied a clear path to the net and, with no defender picking him up, bored in on Lane and tied the game back up, at 3-3. About a minute later, on a drive to the net, Arnold was taken down by big Andover defenseman Luke Duprey. Arnold was awarded a penalty shot, but Stowell stopped him with a glove save. Andover's Garnet Hathaway had a chance to put his team up 4-3 late, but rang one off the crossbar.

In third, as in the two periods preceding it, Nobles drew first blood when a Gus Young shot from the left point broke off Stowell's pad and into the net at the 2:26 mark. This time, though, Andover would be unable to answer. Instead, Nobles struck again, emphatically, when Nick Raffone, flying down the left side, snapped one top shelf to make it 5-3 at the 4:18 mark. This time Nobles wasn't going to give up their lead, and they didn't.

"In the third period," said Nobles head coach Brian Day, "we competed a lot harder than in the first two periods. The kids worked hard and never lost their composure. We have three real good lines and our third line came up with both goals in the third period. It was a total team win. Andover is a hell of a hcokey team. they work hard. It was an accomplishment for us to beat them."

Brendan Corcoran, Joe McNamara, Dom Jancaterino, and Casey Cronin (on a penalty shot) scored the Arrows' goals. Shots were 33-33. Don McGuirl (St. Seb's) and Ben Meisner (Winchendon) manned the nets. Winchendon, up a goal, had to kill off a major over the last five minutes of the game. "That was the most important part of the game," said Winchendon head coach Patrick Leahy, adding, "This was a good overall team effort. We kept it loose, we had fun, and we played as a team."

The final day of the Brooks-Pingree Tournament has been canceled.

Barber Tournament (Day 2 of 2):
All Games Canceled

12/19/08  Updated 9:00 am

The latest weather changes for Saturday: The Winchendon vs. Rivers game (@ Rivers) is now scheduled for 10:00 am.

Plus, at Lawrence Academy on Saturday morning, the times have changed: Culver vs. Cushing will be at 10:00 am, with LA and Hill to follow at noon.

Sorry for the delay in getting these up. After battling through the storm to get back to the office, we found our wireless connection down, but things are (mostly) fine now.

--- Note: Friday's slate of games at St. Sebastian's has been wiped out. The tournament will now start on Saturday morning and continue through Sunday with a somewhat compressed schedule. Halves will be played instead of periods. First games Saturday will be at 8:00 am, with a game at Rivers and one at St. Seb's. All subsequent games will be at St. Seb's. Scroll below and check This Week's Schedule for more details.

As reported earlier, the Barber Tournament is canceled; and Brooks-Pingree has a revised schedule (see below). As of now, all other games listed below will be played as scheduled.

Sat. Dec. 13 Recaps

-- Belmont Hill Wins Fourth Straight

Leaving aside a season-opening shutout of Pingree, Belmont Hill has been outshot by a wide margin in their last three games, First, Nobles, then Governor’s, and, today, Lawrence Academy.

They’ve won all of the games. And they’ve taken more penalties than their opponents in all of those games.

The wins are nice, but, as Belmont Hill coach Ken Martin after the game, “It’s a bad pattern.”

For now, though, Belmont Hill is getting away with it, It helps that they have a standout goalie in senior Mike Condon, a Princeton recruit, who stopped 39 of 41 shots. While Condon had very few problems on the initial shot, there were a number of pretty nice rebounds out front, probably more than Condon would like to allow. Lawrence, however, had difficulty turning them into good scoring opportunites.

Lawrence broke out to a 1-0 first period lead when, on the power play, senior Logan Gillis converted the rebound of a Micah Williams point shot at the 8:21 mark.

Shortly afterward, it looked like Lawrence had taken a two-goal lead, but a Steven Whitney wraparound was waved off, as Condon had dislodged the post.

At the 9:57 mark, pinching Belmont Hill sophomore defenseman Dylan Pike took a nice pass from senior Ryan Walsh and snapped one off from the right faceoff circle, beating Lawrence sophomore goaltender Mac Haight, and tying the game at 1-1.

Early in the second, Whitney drove to the net and the puck slipped under Condon, crossing the goal line. It appeared to be a pretty clear goal but the referee, on the far side, lost sight of the puck, blew the whistle -- and Whitney again came up empty.

It remained a 1-1 game. Six minutes later, sophomore Connor Brickley made a nice short pass in center ice, springing sophomore linemate Brandon  McNally, sending him in alone on Haight. McNally, with a defender hanging on him, waited until Haight committed, then cashed in to give Belmont Hill a 2-1 lead at the 9:51 mark.

Lawrence kept getting power plays – they’d have three on the period, to Belmont Hill’s none – and kept firing away at Condon but coming up empty.

Belmont Hill made it 3-1 when Dawson Luke drifted down the right side into the Lawrence zone, and hit Will Gray with a nice pass goalmouth pass. Gray knocked it past Haight at the 13:26 mark.

Lawrence cut the lead to 3-2 when Luke turned it over on the blue line, and freshman Devin Tringale sent sophomore Zack Phillips in alone. Phillips ripped one from the slot – just  a great shot.

Less than a minute later, however, as the period wound down, Belmont Hill answered as McNally scored his second goal of the game, knocking home the rebound of a Luke point shot.

Lawrence outshot Belmont Hill in the second, 15-6, but went into the intermission trailing, 4-2.

In the third, Mike Blake scored an insurance goal, a back-door tally, putting Belmont Hill up 5-2.

Lawrence kept the pressure on, and outshot Lawrence 19-6 in the third, but had nothing to show for it.

“We have to get better at putting the puck into the net,” Lawrence coach Kevin Potter said afterward. “We just have to find a way to score goals.”

@ St. Mark’s 6, Brooks 5 (OT): A goal by senior David Murphy – his third of the game – lifted St. Mark’s to their first win since the ’06-07 season. After going 0-23-1 last season, St. Mark’s had started out this season with four straight losses. And today could have made it five. After busting out to a 4-1 lead, St. Mark’s, which hasn’t had much experience protecting a lead, allowed Brooks to come back and tie things up at 4-4. The teams then swapped goals seven seconds apart late in the third to send it to overtime. Murphy had quite the day for St. Mark’s, scoring a hat trick and figuring in five of his team’s six goals. Junior Scott MacDougall (2g,2a) and senior Chris Cyr (1g,3a) had days to remember as well. Actually, come to think of it, the whole St. Mark’s team did.

Northfield-Mount Hermon 3 @ Holderness 3: A lot of shots in this one – 101 in total – and not a lot of goals. Senior David Grilk (35/37) played two periods in the Holderness net, and junior Jeff Wasson (20/21) played one. For NMH, junior Branden Komm (40/43) went the distance.

Salisbury 5 @ Kent 2: Salisbury got goals from five different scorers, and junior Andy Iles kicked out 26 of 28 shots.

Groton 3 @ Rivers 2: Senior Jono Turchetta scored all three Groton goals, and junior Dale Adams kicked out 22 of 24 shots.

@ South Kent 6, Berkshire 1: PG Jim Fuorili (2g,1a), senior David Benmocha (1g,2a), and junior Mike Pereira (1g,2a) led the Cardinal attack. Sophomore goaltender Sam Locke stopped 28 of 29 shots for the win.

@ Gunnery 5, Williston 2: Junior Thane Heller (2g) led the attack. Gunnery outshot Williston, 55-10.

@ St. Sebastian’s 5, BB&N 2: Senior Chris Brown figured in three of St. Seb’s five goals, the last an empty-netter. The Arrows outshot BB&N, 53-19.

POSTPONED:

Cushing @ Exeter:
This game, scheduled for today, was postponed due to the ice storm, which has left nearly a million New England homes and businesses without power. It will be made up on Monday (Dec. 15) at 5:00 pm.

And Winchendon, due to the ice storm, bowed out of this weekend's Albany Academy Tournament. Only one of their scheduled games in the tournament, the opener against Albany Academy, a league game, will be made up.

Polls on the Horizon

We received a few emails today that asked, in one form or another, “Where’s the USHR Prep Poll?”

The Prep Poll is alive and well. The first one will be this coming Sunday, Dec. 14. We are aware that when we set up the prep pages earlier in the fall, we listed the first prep poll as being scheduled for Dec. 8th. Our bad. We subsequently studied the academic calendar a little more closely and realized that Thanksgiving was five days later this year than last, meaning that, in order to stick to our schedule of previous seasons, we had to push it back to the following week. Our tradition dictates that the first poll arrive the Sunday before all the major Christmas Tournaments begin. At any rate, it all adds up in the end. There will be 10 Div. I polls in the 2008-09 season, exactly the same number as there was last year. (Div. I Poll dates this season will be: 12/14, 12/22, 1/12, 1/19, 1/26, 2/2, 2/9, 2/16, 2/23, and 3/2).

And trust us on this: there’s not enough evidence to do a poll now. Most Keller Division and Founders’ League teams have only played one game. There will barely be enough on Sunday, but that’s never stopped us from giving it our best shot.

The Div. II poll starts, as usual, a week later, with the first one scheduled for Dec. 23, right after the Christmas Tournaments. There will be nine Div. II polls in total, the same as last year.

We are looking for an intern – or two -- to help us keep track of the won-lost records of all NEPSIHA teams. As those of you who have read USHR for a while know, once we get into late January, we start crunching numbers, utilizing the NEPSIHA playoff formula in order to paint an accurate picture of the prep playoff race. The success of this endeavor depends entirely on our possessing totally accurate game results from all teams. Everything has to add up. There’s more to it than meets the eye.

Naturally, we use much of the same info for the polls. In short, we are looking for someone with an interest in statistics and, beyond that, an ability to interpret them in ways that tell a larger story. A good sports statistician separates the wheat from the chaff. We’re looking for someone who can devote a little bit of his or her spare time to this project. All we ask is that applicants be unbiased, and carry a cheerful approach to the work at hand.

This position is an internship, though if someone older would like to do it, we’re totally open to that, too. We’re just trying to find the right person – or persons. If they can handle the work we will go to bat for them, provide them references as needed, and, perhaps, launch them into other positions in the sports world. We’ve done it for others, with good results. Please email cwarner@ushr.com for more information.

Thanks.

Note:

We want to thank all the coaches for posting all their schedules and rosters. We now have all 61 NEPSIHA schools covered. We also have a handful of schools from outside NEPSIHA, including Delbarton, Hill, Lawrenceville, Northwood, Stanstead College, Wyoming Seminary, and Lake Forest Academy.

If weather forces changes to your team’s schedule let us know directly at information@ushr.com and also update your schedule using the schedule update feature. That way, you are covered two ways. We pride ourselves on providing schedules people can depend on. However, we need your help in getting us the info.

-- Blake, Condon Lead Belmont Hill Past Governor’s, 4-1

In a Keller Division matchup at Byfield, Mass. this afternoon, senior forward Mike Blake (2g,2a) figured in all of his team’s goals as visiting Belmont Hill knocked off Governor’s Academy, 4-1.

Seniors Will Gray (1g,2a), and Jack McNamara (1g,1a) also had big days. And in net Mike Condon kicked out 33 of 34 shots for the win. Senior Dom Malerba stopped 16 of 19 in the Governor’s net.

This was a funny game, in the sense that there were a good number of penalties -- a total of 18 were called (10 called against Bel Hill, and eight against Governor’s) -- that kept the game from developing any real flow. And, although Governor’s outshot Belmont Hill by 34-19, it didn’t really feel that Condon or the Belmont Hill defense was under significant pressure.

In the first period, Belmont Hill went up, 1-0, when, on the power play, Gray cashed in on a back door goal at the 11:03 mark.

In the second, Governor’s tied it up on a shorthanded goal, as sophomore Jack Ceglarski, coming down the slot, took a nice pass from Tim Winslow and snapped one off, beating Condon top corner, glove side, at the 4:55 mark.

Less than four minutes later, Belmont Hill scored what would turn out to be the game-winner when Jack McNamara, along the goal line to Malerba’s right, shot one off the back of Malerba’s right leg, at knee level, and into the net for a 2-1 lead. That’s where things stood after two.

In the third, Belmont Hill scored a nice goal when senior defenseman Ugo Dibiase, at the left point, held the puck nicely and then put a low shot on the net, which Blake was able to deflect past Malerba, giving his team a 3-1 lead 2:55 into the period.

Blake added an empty-netter with 59 seconds left.

Governor’s is only going with three defenseman this year. And, with sophomore Reed Kennedy hurt, they are utilizing just two – senior Jeff Menard and sophomore Drew Tallett (the brother of Harvard defenseman Ian Tallett). Governor’s uses two men up front and three back, in the manner of Middlebury coach Bill Beaney.

“I think our defense did a really good job keeping the shots to the outside – Governor’s attacked with speed – and (Condon) came up big,” said Belmont Hill head coach Ken Martin.

”We’re generating offense but not a sustained offense,” said Governor’s head coach Peter Kravchuk. “Part of that was Condon and part was not getting good shots and good rebounds and going to the net.”

Daily Double

A pair of former prep defensemen from the class of '02 -- Deerfield's Ben Lovejoy and Taft's Jaime Sifers -- made their NHL debuts last night.

Lovejoy, an '84 who graduated from Deerfield and Dartmouth, was called up by the Pittsburgh Penguins from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) and played 10 plus minutes in a 4-3 Pittsburgh loss to Buffalo. Lovejoy, who is 6'2", 214 lbs. now, was undrafted and signed as a free agent. He's the older brother of current Deerfield defenseman Nick Lovejoy, a junior and a Dartmouth recruit; and former Deerfield defenseman Matt Lovejoy, who is playing lacrosse at Virginia. The boys' dad, Carl, played college hockey at Colby, and their mother, Cari, was an excellent lacrosse player in college. In sum, a ridiculously athletic family.

Sifers, an '83 who graduated from Taft and Vermont, was called up by the Toronto Maple Leafs from the Toronto Marlies (AHL) and played 17 minutes in a 4-2 Maple Leafts home win over the New York Islanders. Like Lovejoy, Sifers, who is now 5'11", 205 lbs., was undrafted and signed as a free agent. His sister, Jennifer Sifers, was a forward for the Harvard women. Another talented athletic family.

***

We missed this one, but a reader just brought it to our attention. Former Taft (class of '03) and Boston University goaltender John Curry made his NHL debut for the Pittsburgh Penguins on Nov. 26, Thanksgiving eve. Curry, who had been brought up from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) came on in relief after Dany Sabourin gave up a goal that put the Pens, playing the NY Islanders on the road, down 3-0. With Curry in net, Pittsburgh came back with a vengeance, scoring five straight goals for a 5-3 win. ''I didn't have time to think. All I could do was just go in and play,'' said Curry, a 5'11" Shorewood, Minn. native. ''Believe me, it was very nerve-racking.'' Two nights later, Curry got the start at Buffalo, and stopped 28 of 32 shots in a 4-3 loss. After that, Marc-Andre Fleury returned to action. In his two NHL games to date, Curry has a 2.67 gaa and a .907 save percentage.

***

Several nights later, on Nov. 29, former Phillips Andover and Boston College goaltender Cory Schneider, who saw plenty of Curry from the opposite end of the ice during his college years, made his NHL debut. Schneider, an '86 from Marblehead, Mass., has played five straight games filling in for Roberto Luongo, who is out with a groin pull. In those games, the 6'2" Schneider has a .896 save percentage and a 2.80 gaa. Prior to being called up, Schneider, Vancouver's first round draft pick in '04, had played 11 games for Manitoba (AHL), posting a .945 save percentage and a 1.37 gaa. Not bad at all.

***

This doesn't quite count as an NHL debut, since he was called up for one game late last season, but former Phillips Exeter and Harvard forward Tom Cavanagh was called up to the San Jose Sharks from Worcester (AHL) last week. Cavanagh, a sixth round draft pick of the Sharks in '01, has played one game with the Sharks since his recall. An '82 from Warwick, RI, Cavanagh played at Toll Gate High before taking a PG year at Exeter. He's from a ridiculously athletic family, too -- funny how these things work. His father, Joe Cavanagh, was one of the best forwards at Harvard -- ever. Just a great player. Trust us, we saw him play. Problem was, not many Americans even got a sniff from the NHL in the late 60's and early '70s.

Sat. Dec. 6 Results

Today at Marion, Mass., host Tabor took a 2-0 first period lead, but Phillips Exeter came back with three goals in the second and held on for a 4-2 win.

The Seawolves went up 1-0 when junior Tim Shea corralled a loose puck in the crease and made a nice goal mouth pass across to sophomore Mark Meads, who knocked it past Exeter junior goalie Max Fenkell at the 5:18 mark.

Tabor, on the power play, made it 2-0 at 16:26 of the first when junior defenseman Andrew Latta one-timed one from the point, the puck deflecting off an Avon defenseman on the way through. Fenkell had no chance.

Exeter struck quickly in the second, getting on the board with a power play goal just 48 seconds in, with senior d-man Jeff Reppucci making a nice play across to senior Nick Kondiles, who tapped it past Seawolves senior goalie Nick Betti.

Then senior Dan Weiniger went to work, tying the game while shorthanded from a scramble in front, and then coming right back with a 5-on-3 tally to put Exeter up, 3-2, which is where things stood after two periods.

Tabor thought they had tied it up in the third when Latta appeared to have beaten Fenkell on a breakaway. Latta thought he had a goal, threw up his arms in celebration – and proceeded to bowl over the referee, taking him right out of position to make the call. The shot may have crossed the line. The puck was in Fenkell’s body – he’d flopped back and smothered the puck. Basically, it was just hard for anyone, much less the referee, to make the call. So…no goal.

Tabor continued to press hard, but couldn’t tie the game up.

Exeter senior defenseman Tommy Larkin added an empty-netter with four seconds left.

The game lacked crispness, and was a bit on the sloppy side.

Weiniger played well for Exeter – he could have had three in the second, as he also rang one off the crossbar. Reppucci, a smart, smallish player, had a good game, too. PG Matt Hatch worked hard. Fenkell had a good game, kicking out 41 shots of 43 shots – Exeter had 28 shots on Betti.

For Tabor, senior Jayson Megna appears to be their most creative forward. Sophomore forward Cam Spiro, from Hingham High, showed a nice pair of mitts. Latta and junior d-man Derek Henderson were solid on the Seawolves blue line.

Schedules, Rosters -- and More

Schedules:

Coaches from 60 of the 61 New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association schools – that includes both Div. I and Div. II -- have uploaded their schedules. We know it’s a busy time of year, and we thank them. We’re waiting on only one school and that is -- nudge, nudge -- Rye Country Day.

Rosters:

Out of the 61 NEPSIHA schools, we have rosters from 57. Rather than list all the schools we do have, we will list the four schools we don’t have. Keep an eye for them. They should appear in the upcoming days. Our goal, of course, is to have them all -- a complete record.

We are still missing:

Div. I: Hotchkiss.

Div. II: Pingree, Portsmouth Abbey, and Rye Country Day.

All the rest we have.

As we are able to instantly see when there are new additions, we will be updating the list  over the upcoming days.

***

We don’t have as many rosters/schedules from schools outside New England as in recent years. We have the key schools that will be frequently traveling into New England, but we’re not doing as well on the Midwestern and Canadian preps. That’s probably a referendum on the east coast slant to our prep coverage, a situation that exists primarily for two reasons – the massive concentration of hockey-playing prep schools in New England, plus the fact that USHR is based in Boston, right in the middle of it all. Still, we have to figure out a way to branch out, and any ideas are appreciated.

We also want to improve the girls’ section of the U.S. Hockey Report, and are looking for a few ideas there – as well as some qualified people who would be willing to help out.
