Hatch Leads Exeter Over Rivers

Exeter, NH – PG Matt Hatch, a Massena, NY native, had a hand in Exeter’s first three goals today in a 5-1 win over Rivers.

Exeter scored a power play goal in the first. Senior Jeff Reppucci, manning the blue line alone, fired a shot that senior Tommy Larkin tipped past Rivers junior goalie Tim Corey at 6:30 of the first. Hatch got the second assist on the goal.

In the second period, Hatch knocked home the rebound of a point shot by Michael Kennedy to make it 2-0. Exeter went up 3-0 when, on a 2-on-1, Hatch converted a Dan Weiniger pass.

In the third, Rivers got on the board at the 1:48 mark when super sophs Connor  Dempsey and Cam Brown went to work – Dempsey got the goal, beating Exeter senior goalie Andrew Jankowski, who had started the third in place of Max Fenkell, who had posted two shutout periods (19/19).

Juniors Ryan Breen and James Shannon added insurance goals for Exeter in the third.

This game was a bit of a foregone conclusion early on. However, Rivers, given that they have only had two days of practice after tryouts, hung in there nicely. They were also short a line, as two forwards are making lacrosse visits and another was out with an injury. So they went with two lines and four d-men today.

"I thought we may have been a little better than people expected,” Rivers coach Brendan Fleming said. “Exeter is a very solid team with a great goaltender and it took us some time to get used to the speed, because last year we didn’t play anyone outside the league of this caliber. But I thought we did well, though we have some work to do.

Rivers boasts two very good players in the above-mentioned sophs. Brown, a left-shot center, led Rivers in scoring as a freshman last season. He’s a nifty little player, and we do mean little – try 5’0” and about 105 lbs. He’s a ’93 so he probably has a growth spurt in front of him. We can tell you that he has nice mitts, isn’t afraid of traffic, and is a lot of fun to watch. Some people might say he’s too small to project him as a  Div. I player, but the kid is a hockey player.. Ditto for Dempsey, a ’92 and, like Brown, a left-shot center. Whereas Brown is an elusive little bugger who can stickhandle in a phone booth, Dempsey, who’s around 5’6”, 150, is a more traditional type, constantly skating, and constantly looking to move the puck to the open man. He, too, is a Div. I prospect.

As for Exeter, Hatch, who centers Weiniger and Nick Kondiles, is a Div. I prospect. At 6’0”, 170 lbs. Hatch has enough size, and he can skate see the ice. He's definitely worth keeping an eye on. So too is Reppucci, who may walk on at UNH. Reppucci, a Newburyport, Mass. native, played well today, moving the puck with authority. Reppucci's defense partner, Larkin, a Colgate recruit who’s 6’4” plus, and 215 lbs., seemed out of sync. His hands weren't doing what his head was telling them too.

Avon Old Farms transfer Max Fenkell played well in goal for Exeter, stopping all 19 shots he faced.

Sun. Nov. 30 Jamboree Results

-- At Concord, NH:

Taft 6, St. Paul’s 3 – Senior Jesse Root notched a pair of goals, both assisted by PG Erik-Lars Hansen (from Minnetonka HS) to lead Taft to a 6-3 win over St. Paul’s today. Matt Herskovitz had a goal, off a nice pass from Robbie Bourdon. Talented freshman Corbin McGuire, a ’93 from Ridgefield, Conn., also scored a goal, as did junior defenseman Zander Masucci.

The Taft forwards looked good, though the St. Paul’s defense had a bit to do with that, allowing them way too much space below the dots.

For St. Paul’s, ’92 sophomore Brendon Bourgea, the younger brother of Jason, had a goal and an assist. Jonathan Liau looked his usual quick and clever self, also notching a goal and an assist. ’92 sophomore defenseman Ben Kaplan, a rangy kid with upside – and another in the endless stream of Vermonters who make their way to SPS – also had a goal, rushing to the net to tip one home.

Steve Racine was between the pipes for Taft, and T.J. Bowse for St. Paul’s.

Note: Mark Bozek is the interim head coach at St. Paul’s this season, as Tim Pratt is taking the year abroad in France.

Canterbury 4, Tabor 3 – With 30 seconds remaining in the game, Canterbury senior Sean Murray finished off a 3-on-2 to lift his team to a 4-3 win over Tabor. Senior Scott Machinksi made a really nice pass on the play, and junior Kevin Goumas also picked up an assist.

But that wasn’t the story of the game. For pretty much the entire third period the puck was in the Canterbury end, but 6’0” senior goaltender Brian Taptick was outstanding, stoning the Seawolves left and right. Taptick, a ’90 from Middletown, Conn., flat-out stole this game for Canterbury. We don’t have a save total for you, but he made plenty, as the shots came in flurries, including many quality shots. One third-period save was a big-time stop. Tabor was just all over this kid in the third period.

Taptick was actually outstanding the entire game. The goal he allowed in the first period came from a scrum during which everyone was whacking away at the puck for a long stretch period of time before someone – Mark Meads? – jammed it home. The second goal Taptick allowed was on a shorthanded breakaway by Regan MacLean. On the third goal Taptick allowed, big Tabor defenseman Andrew Latta, on the power play, fired one through a screen, beating him top corner.

While Taptick played the entire game for Canterbury, Tabor gave one period to each of their three goalies. Nick Betti played the first, Robert Kang the second, and Josh Kanter the third.

We thought 6’0” returning senior Jayson Megna, a ’90 and a right-shot center, looked particularly good for Tabor. So, too, did Seawolves junior defenseman Derek Henderson, a 6’0, 175 lb. ’92 birthdate from Smithfield, RI. Henderson is a sturdy, poised kid who bears watching.

Tabor is a solid team, with a nose for the net and some size on the blue line. It will require good goaltending -- like today’s -- to beat them.

Taft vs. Tabor, 4:00 pm

St. Paul’s vs. Canterbury, 6:15 pm

-- At RPI; Troy, NY:

Northwood 8, St. Andrew’s 4 – Junior T.J. Hermans (2g), senior Kevin Cole (1g,1a), PG Adam Boxill, PG Adam Berkle (1g,1a), and seniors Sean O'Neil (2a) and Huck Saunders (2a) led the way offensively as Northwood topped St. Andrew's College, 8-4. Senior Morgan Bonner (1g,3a) figured in all three of St. Andrew's goals, while senior Griffin Lacy scored a pair. Courtney Lockwood was in goal for Northwood. Max Dizgun, a '92 and the younger brother of former Deerfield goalie Michael Dizgun, was in goal for St. Andrew's.

Salisbury 4, Pomfret 3 (OT) – no details available.

-- At Alpharetta, Georgia:

Hebron 3, New England Stars 1 – Eric Rodriguez (1g,2a) and Chad Goodwin (1g,1a) led Hebron to a 3-1 win over the New England Stars. Andy Bettencourt also scored for Hebron. Picking up the win in net was goaltender Colin Taylor, who played a strong game, kicking out 32 of 33 shots -- and even adding an assist.

Lawrence 2, Cushing 1 -- Steven Whitney stole the puck in the neutral zone, stepped over the blue line and fired a rocket under the crossbar with about seven minutes to go in the second half to give Lawrence a 2-1 win over Cushing tonight. In was a fun game to watch, though not for Cushing head coach Rob Gagnon, who saw his team go on the power play for maybe 15-17 minutes of the second half (25-minute halves were played) and that included a couple of brief 5-on-3's. Lawrence's penalty, needless to say, was outstanding. And Lawrence's goalie, Matt Walsh, came up huge, stopping 27 of 28 shots. Marcus Calvanico stopped 17 of 19 for the Penguins. Lawrence outshot Cushing in the first period, 13-9, and took a 1-0 lead on a Brendan Cottam goal, assisted by Wayne Simpson. In the second half, Cuhsing tied it up on a Casey Brugman goal, with assists going to Kenny Simon and Neil Lavanchy.

-- at Belmont, Mass., morning games:

Winchendon 6, Belmont Hill 4 -- Belmont Hill, on goals by Connor Brickley, Matt Ronan, and Brandon McNally, took a 3-0 first period lead, but Winchendon's Hugo Turcotte cut it to 3-1 before the break. Winchendon then exploded for three quick ones early in the second -- from Corey Lee, Adam Hercules (great name!), and Adam Dallaire – to go up 4-3. Jack McNamara came back and tied it up for Belmont Hill at 4-4. In the third period, though, a shot from the point by Winchendon defenseman Patrick Coulombe found its way through a crowd in front. A power play goal, it put Winchendon up 5-4 and turned out to be the game winner. PG Corey Bellamy (younger brother of Rob and Kasey) added an insurance goal with 1:29 left.

This win was no fluke. Belmont Hill is a good team, but so is Winchendon, which not only worked extremely hard, but also has some skilled players. 5’8” senior center Hugo Turcotte, a crafty type from Laval, Que. with good hands and hockey sense, was very noticeable, as was his Raphael Pouliot, his 6’3”, 205 lb. winger. Pouliot, a 4/16/91 birthdate who played on the Quebec Under-17 team at last winter’s World Under-17 Challenge, is eligible for June’s NHL draft and will be followed. Going solely on today's game, we saw late-round potential. Other forwards we liked included 5’7” junior center Phil Arnone, who played on the Monarchs Empire team last year and can scoot; Hercules, a 6’3” PG out of the OPJHL; and Bellamy, whom we mentioned. On the blue line we liked 6’1” PG Brad Devereaux, formerly at Hingham High; and 5’9” Evan Yanovitch, who played on state runner-up Malden Catholic last winter. Winchendon’s 5’9” goalie, Ben Meisner, showed quickness, which allowed him to recover quickly.

As for Belmont Hill, senior Michael Condon, who played the first two periods before giving way to Derek Metcalfe for the third, was not up to his usual standards. He might have lost his focus a bit during the minutes that Winchendon reeled off three quick ones. The McNally-Brickley-Ronan line looked very good for Belmont Hill. Big sophomore defenseman Dylan Pike moves well for a kid his age and size.

Proctor 3, Governor’s 3 – After getting drubbed 11-1 by Nobles in a Friday afternoon scrimmage, Proctor head coach Mike Walsh was interested in seeing how his kids would respond. “You get your butt whipped, you better show up for the next day,” he said. Well, did they? “I think our guys responded well, at least for two periods. In the third, it got away from us a bit.”

This was a curious game, GDA only has four defenseman on their roster this season, and one of them, sophomore Reed Kennedy, was injured. So coach Peter Kravchuk adjusted his strategy, which the forwards struggled early to adjust to. However, there is plenty of skill up front on this team. Core players like Brian Ward, Cody Ferriero, and Alex Gacek – all underclassmen are back. Two new forwards with significant upside are 6’1”, 160 lb. sophomore Nick Wirth of Ashburn, Virginia; and 6’0”, 185 lb. junior Jake Picking of Wellesley, Mass. Both are legit Div. I prospects.

As for the game, Proctor was led offensively by PG Rob Toczylowski, a big winger off the Reading High team that won the Mass state championship last March. Toczylowski, dangerous down low, figured in all three Proctor goals, scoring two and assisting on a third – a really nice goalmouth pass, actually.

Picking scored for Governor’s in the second period. Trailing 3-1 entering the third, Governor’s got goals from Trevor Hines, who snapped one under the crossbar; and Ferriero, who, on the power play, converted a Gacek pass. With the score tied 3-3 Governor’s poured it on late, and hit a ridiculous number of posts. If they were aiming at the posts, they couldn’t have done any better. Did you know that a former Tabor student who played at Middlebury studied color and did a study that postulated the theory that the eye is drawn to a color like red, which makes it the absolutely wrong color for posts. The colors, he believes, should be flipped, i.e. red twine and white posts. But he was a forward. Goalies are perfectly happy with the way things are.

Note:

Proctor sophomore Brett Kangas, the son of Williams coach Billy Kangas, was hammered into the end boards in the second period and taken to the hospital, where a catscan showed he had a grade two concussion. He'll be out 7=10 days.

Afternoon games:

Belmont Hill 2, Proctor 2 – A third period goal from Mike McNamara, off a pass from brother Jack McNamara lifted Belmont Hill to a 2-2 tie with Proctor. Brandon McNally scored Belmont Hill’s other goal. Proctor, which was down a d-man (Kangas) and a forward (Connor Toomey DQ'd due to a hit from behind in the day's first game), got a very strong goaltending performance from sophomore Frank McCormick of Peabody, Mass. and St. Mary's of Lynn. Junior Keith Buehler and PG Rob Toczlowski scored the Hornets' goals.

Governor's 7, Winchendon 3 --
Alex Gacek, Cody Ferriero, and Brian Ward led the attack (no scoresheets were kept at these games so we can't give you precise details), and Dom Malerba and Luke Montoni split duties in net.

At Needham, Mass.:

Nobles 7, St. Sebastian’s 4 – No rosters, no numbers on the jerseys, so this was a tough one on the scouts who showed up. At any rate, Nobles’ top line will be tough to handle this year, as Billy Arnold (3g,2a), Kevin Hayes (1g,4a), and Matt Harlow (1g,2a) again led the way. Gus Young looked good on the Nobles blue line. Steve Rogers, Chris Brown, and Dom Jancaterino played well for the Arrows. Goaltending at both ends was suspect.

At Alpharetta, Georgia:

Lawrence 7, New England Stars 5 – details to follow

Hebron 8, Florida Alliance 5 – Florida came out flying and held a 5-3 lead at the end of the first half. In the second half, Hebron went to work, scoring five unanswered goals. Junior Andy Bettencourt (3g,1a), senior Chad Goodwin (1g,3a), PG Eric Rodriguez (1g,1a), senior Billy Brewster (1g,1a), and junior Bryan Felice (2a) led the Hebron attack.Four of Hebron’s goals came on the powerplay. Shots were 44-31 in favor of Hebron.

Cushing 3, New England Stars 3 -- For Cushing, Mike Bosco notched a pairand Neil Lavanchy had one. For the New England Stars, Jeff Gee, Guillaume Vallee, and Adam Chevarie each scored one goal. Owen Clark was in net for the Penguins, and Josh Brand for the Stars.

At Union College, Schenectady, NY:

Northwood 2, Salisbury 1 – Northwood came out with a lot of jump to their game. On the power play, PG Ben McLaughlin deflected home a Marc-Antoine Carrier shot from the point for a 1-0 lead. Later in the period, Adam Berkle set up Jordan Hobaica for a nice goal to make it 2-0. In the second half, Salisbury got their legs under them and played much better, with Max Edson scoring a power play goal to make it 2-1, which is where it ended. Northwood outshot Salisbury, 26-19.

“Salisbury has a nice team,” Northwood coach Jeff Matthews said. “The fact that we have played more was an obvious advantage in terms of playing our system. But we had to hold them off. The game had a good pace.”

Matthews also reports that, about ten minutes into the second half, Salisbury goaltender Andy Iles came up with an unbelievable save, one of the best he’d ever seen at any level – one of those diving-across-the-net-with- the-glove-coming-out-of-nowhere saves.

Junior Raphael Girard had a strong game in net for Northwood.

 St. Andrew’s 5, Pomfret 2 – no details available.

Fri. Nov. 28 Jamboree Results

At Alpharetta, Georgia:

Lawrence Academy 5, Florida Alliance 4 (OT)
– The Florida Alliance went up 2-0 early only to see LA come back with four straight goals – by Jason Molle, Scott Shiner, and a pair by Wayne Simpson -- to take a 4-2 lead into the final minute of the game. But things got interesting as the Alliance cashed in on back-to-back power play goals -- to tie the game at 4-4 and send it into OT. At around the 3:30 mark, Steven Whitney scored the game winner, with assists to his linemates, sophomore Zach Phillips and Simpson. LA outshot the Alliance by 49-16. The game consisted of 25-minute halves, and Lawrence, utilizing a 24-man roster for the weekend, played all three of their goalies – Matt Walsh, Jeremy Bellino, and Mac Haight.

Hebron 3, Cushing 2 – Senior goaltender Craig Ryan, a ’90 birthdate from Wallingford, Conn., kicked out 41 of 43 shots, some in spectacular fashion, to lead Hebron to a 3-2 upset win over Cushing Academy. Hebron came out hard, outplaying Cushing for most of the half and, on the strength of goals by juniors Cam Moniz and Vlad Gavrik, took a 2-0 lead into the break. In the second half, Cushing came out and poured it on, tying the game up on goals by juniors Brendan Conklin and Mike Conderman. With a little over two minutes to go Hebron junior Bryan Felice scored the game-winner on a fortuitous bounce, with the puck hitting the knob of Cushing junior goaltender Mike Reed’s stick and falling back over the goal line and into the net. Cushing, down a goal, kept swarming in a desperate attempt to tie it up, but Ryan, who was recruited to Hebron by current Cushing coach Rob Gagnon, came up big.

Hebron coach Matt Plante said what most impressed him about his team tonight was the way they weathered the storm when Cushing came back to tie it at 2-2. “It would have been easy for them to buckle,” Plante said. “But they didn’t. Instead, they played their best hockey. It showed me the character they have, to do that in the first game and against an opponent like Cushing.” Plante reports that Reed, who split time in net last season, has come to “understand that he needs to be more consistent mentally while at the same time improving technically. He’s become more efficient (in his movement).”  Gavrik had an assist to go with his goal, and junior Andy Bettencourt had two assists.

In the day's first game, Florida topped the New England Stars, 6-2.

At Dedham, Mass.:

Noble & Greenough bombed Proctor, 11-1, with the Billy Arnold-Matt Harlow-Kevin Hayes line combining for seven goals. Nobles also scored a total of seven power play goals.

Schedules Needed

Most coaches, though not all, have posted their team’s schedules. We mention this because we will be putting together the ’08-09 weekly composite schedule one week from today. From our end we will do everything in our power to be totally thorough. But we need your help. Please note that the composite schedules we post each week are drawn, by a computer program, directly from the schedules that coaches post to USHR. We then format them, and double check them, line-by-line. To ensure that no games are missed, we need every school’s schedule.

If any coaches are having problems uploading their schedule, please drop us an email at information (at) ushr.com. We will help.

We are missing schedules from the following NEPSIHA schools:

Belmont Hill
Berkshire
Brewster
Hotchkiss
Rye Country Day
St. Sebastian’s
Thayer
Tilton

We’re also missing schedules from several schools outside NEPSIHA that we like to include in our composite – e.g. Northwood, the Hill School.

Note:

We have 46 rosters posted so far. Please scroll down for the complete list.

Sheary, Calvanico Lead Cushing Past Northwood

Amherst, Mass. – Cushing Academy, after missing the playoffs last year, wanted to make a statement today, and did, with a convincing 6-1 win over Northwood at the back rink at UMass-Amherst.

The game was no classic. There were a lot of turnovers, scrambly play, and passes that didn’t connect. However, as the final score indicates, most of those mistakes were Northwood’s.

Cushing’s first line set the tone of the game. After a long feeling-out stretch to start the contest, the Penguins broke through with about seven minutes left in the period. Cushing junior forward Conor Sheary did the heavy work. With the puck behind the net, on the stick of a Northwood defenseman, the 5’8” Sheary buzzed in, flattened the Northwood defenseman, stole the puck, and fed it to his linemate, junior Mike Conderman in the slot. Conderman buried it for the first Cushing goal of the season.

Cushing went ahead 2-1 when senior D Grant Telfer moved the puck out of the Cushing end to Conderman, who tipped it over to Sheary in the neutral zone. Sheary carried it into the Northwood end and, from about four feet inside the blue line, ripped one top shelf past startled Northwood junior goaltender Raphael Girard.

Early in the second, Northwood got on the board. Nick Cecere took a shot from the point that rebounded to PG Ben McLaughlin whose shot, in turn, rebounded to Steven Verrilli. The 5’8” senior knocked it past Marcus Calvanico, Cushing’s 6’3” junior goalie, at the 3:15 mark.

For most of the second, it was a one-goal game. With 4:32 remaining, though, senior center Neil Lavanchy drew the puck back to his winger, Kenny Simon, who put it upstairs to give Cushing a 3-1 lead.

A little over a minute later, Cushing would make it 4-1 when junior Brendan Cocklin tucked home a backdoor rebound. Casey Brugman and Petter Aronsson assisted.

In the third, Cushing added a couple more. On the first, just 36 seconds in, Brugman made a nice play getting the puck to the net, and then Simon took care of the rest, scoring his second of the game when he poked the puck home from a scrum at the edge of the crease.

At the 10:24 mark, junior Brian Troy scored off a nice Aronsson pass to account for the final 6-1 margin of victory.

Cushing outshot Northwood, 30-22.

”We got great goaltending,” said Cushing second-year head coach Rob Gagnon. “And our defensemen kept it simple, getting it to our forwards with short five-foot passes. The strength of our team is keeping it simple. If we do that we can be effective because of our team speed.”

”Northwood is a great opponent, but they may have been tired after playing a good Gunnery team last night. And our guys were amped up and ready to go. I think this game was a statement that our guys are ready to play this year.”

Northwood head coach Jeff Matthews wasn’t about to use the Saturday evening game, which Northwood won 6-3, as an excuse.

”In college you have to play back-to-back,” Matthews explained. “And that’s the level these guys aspire to.”

”I am disappointed in our effort. Cushing deserved to win. They out-competed us. The won more battles. They wanted it more.”

Notes:

Northwood’s defensive corps was without talented junior Marc-Antoine Carrier, who is out with a high ankle sprain. On top of that , Nick Pokulok missed the first period with a skate problem. As a group, though, they were out of sync all day.
