Prep Season Opens for Real

Andover, Mass. -- A much-improved squad from Lawrence Academy battled Andover to a 3-3 tie on the road today, and came close to heading home with a win. However, Andover ninth grade goaltender Glenn Stowell, starting the season in place of injured senior Matt Ward, kicked out 39 of 42, saving his teammates bacon.

Lawrence Academy scored just 1:20 into the game, as ninth grader Steven Whitney, off passes from brother Joe and Jason Schneider, beat Stowell to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Andover got it back at the 6:46 mark, as J.P. Martignetti hit a streaking Paul Engelhardt with a perfect pass which Englehardt was able to deflect past Lawrence goaltender Justin Gates on a bang-bang play at the corner of the crease.

Andover went up 2-1 when a Lawrence defenseman mishandled the puck at his blue line and sophomore forward Stephen Bury stole it and walked in alone, tucking it by Gates at the 9:28 mark.

Lawrence tied it at 2-2 when senior Brett Moore made a play from the left corner, connecting with Joseph Ehiorobo for a power play goal with 58 seconds left in the period.

The second period was quite different, turning into a tug of war, with a lot of early-season lack of connectivity on plays. No goals were scored, and the period kind of lurched along.

In the third, things picked up a bit, as Joe Whitney missed an open net at one end, and at the other end an Andover defenseman clanged one off the crossbar.

A power brown-out sent both teams to their locker rooms with 14:52 left in regulation. When play resumed after a delay of 10-15 minutes, Andover’s Tommy Dignard, following up on the rebound of a Martignetti shot, had plenty to shoot at, and didn’t miss, giving Andover a 3-2 lead with 13:58 remaining on the clock.

With 4:35 left, Lawrence senior forward John Simpson moved the puck from below the goal line out to Stevie Bergin, stationed at the left point. Bergin fired it, not terribly hard, but plenty accurately, kind of a change-up that found a big chunk of open net, and the game was tied at 3-3.

In overtime, Andover’s Chris Cahill had a sparkling opportunity to give his team the win, but his shot went just wide of the net, and time ran out.

Lawrence outshot Andover, 42-34. Andover took nine penalties to Lawrence’s two, and a number of them were unnecessary.

“We were extremely undisciplined,” Andover coach Dean Boylan said. “Kevin (Potter) has a a good team, but we can’t go helping them out like we did with our undisciplined play.”

As for the visitors, Potter said “We’re young, we even have a 14-year-old, Steve Whitney, in the lineup. This game could have gone either way. But to start the season with a point on the road at Andover… I’m happy with this team. It’s a good way to start the year.”

Sophomore Anthony Borelli kicked out 17 of 18 shots to pick up the win… Berwick took a 3-0 lead into the third period, and looked to be dominating Kent’s Hill – they would end up outshooting them, 44-17 – but Kent’s Hill came back with three third-period goals for a hard-earned tie. Kent’s Hill sophomore goalie Will Reyes worked up an honest sweat, kicking out 41 shots. Junior forward Shawn Feeney (2g,1a) had a hand in all three Kent’s Hill goals. For Berwick, junior Steve Scott (1g,1a) and senior Marc Levangie (1g,1a) led the way offensively… Berkshire senior goaltender Adam Szczepanski stopped all 23 shots he faced and got plenty of offensive support in an 8-0 win over Albany Academy. In Concord, NH, St. Paul’s junior goaltender Tyler O’Brien had a 27-save shutout over Governor Dummer. Junior Jason DeGiovanni (2g), junior Francois Brisebois (3a), and sophomore Ben Albertson (2a) each had a multi-point afternoon. Defenseman Peter Child also scored for St. Paul’s…. At Dedham, Mass., senior Ryan Maguire picked up four points (2g,2a) in Noble & Greenough’s 4-1 win over Pomfret. Matt Rhone (1g,1a) and defenseman Chris Huxley (1g,1a) each picked up two points, and junior goaltender John Muse kicked out 24 of 25 for the win. Defenseman Ryan Joyce scored Pomfret’s lone goal… Westminster, playing on the road, topped Kent, 5-2. PG Miles Miller (2g,1a), junior Nick Pitsikoulis (3a), and senior Ben Smith (1g,1a) led the way for Westminster. Senior Alex Higgins had two assists for Kent.... At Middletown, RI, St. George's knocked off Thayer Academy, 5-3.

Game Changes

The St. Paul’s vs. Gov. Dummer game scheduled for tomorrow (Wed. 11/30) has, due to a forecast of warm southern winds and high humidity that could affect the ice, been moved north to St. Paul’s. Game time will be at 4:45 pm.

The second meeting of the season between those two teams has been flip-flopped. That game will be played at GDA at 5 pm on Feb. 1st.

-- Today, Belmont Hill will be hosting the Boston Jr. Bruins Empire Jr. B team at 5:00 pm. It’s a scrimmage, but they’ll be playing it as a real game -- three 18-minute periods with real officials, etc.

In addition, on Thursday (12/1), Belmont Hill will be hosting the Irish National Team at 5:00 pm. More on that later.
