MLK Day Melee Correction
Avon Old Farms Head Coach John Gardner reports that he has studied game tapes from last Monday’s Avon-Westminster game and that Westy senior forward Sean Orlando was not the player who accidentally hit Avon Old Farms assistant Bill Maniscalco in the dustup that occurred as time expired.

“It was not Sean Orlando,” Gardner said.

We asked Gardner who it was.

“We could not determine from the film exactly who was involved and, really, at this point we wouldn’t say even if we did know. It was accidental anyway. It’s in the past. But we don’t want him (Orlando) hurt by this.”

Gardner said he expects Wednesday’s game to go smoothly, with no repercussions.

Sat. 1/26/13

Sat. Jan. 26 Highlights
@ Andover 2, Loomis 1 (OT) – PG Conal Lynch took a short pass from senior D Connor Light at the offensive blue line and let one rip from the right faceoff circle, beating Loomis senior goaltender Danny Tirone to the short side. This was a tremendous game to watch, as both goalies were strong, with Tirone and Andover soph Eric Wurman being forced to come up with big stops. Tirone, whose glove hand is his right hand, faced the lion’s share of the shots, especially early. The Conn. native, ex of Shattuck U16s, may not be big, but he’s a very strong Div. I prospect. He certainly gives his team a legit chance every time out. Both teams had glittering opportunities in a scoreless third period and a bunch more in OT – at least until Lynch’s big goal. Andover improves to 6-8-2, while Loomis falls to 10-7-1.

@ Berkshire 4, Salisbury 3 – After #7 Salisbury came back from a 3-1 first period deficit to tie the game at 3-3, Berkshire junior forward Craig Puffer came up with the game-winner for the #3-ranked Bears with just 1:20 remaining in regulation. Also coming up big again for Berkshire was junior forward Tipper Higgins, who notched two goals. Salisbury outshot Berkshire, 44-24, but Bears senior goalie Tim Ernst,  ex of Salisbury, kicked out 41shots for the win. Berkshire’s unbeaten streak is now at 16.

@ Belmont Hill 8, Cushing 2 (OT) -- Seniors Carl Hesler (2g,1a), EJ Rauseo (1g,2a), and Mike Najjar (3a), as well as junior Matt Melanson (1g,2a) each had three points as #4-ranked Belmont Hill dismantled #6 Cushing 8-2. These are two teams headed in opposite directions. Belmont Hill has won five in a row; Cushing has now lost three in a row.

@ Canterbury 2, Pomfret 1 – Senior forward Jeff Celniker’s goal with 3:12 to play lifted host Canterbury to a 2-1 win over Pomfret. Canterbury, now 9-7-3, outshot Pomfret, 41-18, but senior goalie Alex Joyce came up big in a losing cause, stopping 39.

@ Kent 5, Westminster 4 (OT) –  Tied 3-3 going into the third, Kent junior forward Lewis Zerter-Gossage (1g,1a) put #9-ranked Kent back up by one with under eight minutes to go. But with the clock ticking down to 10 seconds and the goalie pulled, Westminster PG forward Ethan Holdaway slipped home the tying goal. Westy’s late comeback was for naught, however, as Kent sophomore forward Max Kaufman (1g,1a) lifted the Lions to victory at the 2:54 mark of OT. Kent outshot Westminster 39-21. Kent is unbeaten in their last seven (6-0-1). #5-ranked Westminster has had a tough go of it, having gone four games (0-3-1) without a win.

Governor’s 3 @ Brooks 2 – Senior forward James Murphy’s second goal of the day, a power play tally with 3:23 left, lifted Gov’s (8-8-3) to the .500 mark. Of the five goals in the game, four came on the powerplay and one was a shortie. Brooks outshot the Governors 33-18, but senior goaltender Brendan McMenimen came up with 31 saves to earn the win.

@ Choate 4, Avon Old Farms 1 – After going into the third tied at 1-1, Choate reeled off three unanswered goals to knock off #10 Avon. Mickey Foley (1g,2a) had a three-point day for the Wild Boars. And sophomore goaltender Sam Tucker came up big, kicking out 38 shots to earn the win.

@ Exeter 3, St. Sebastian’s 0 – 6’3” Exeter sophomore goaltender Michael Lackey posted a 27-save shutout.

@ Dexter 8, St. Mark’s 2 – Senior Trevor Fidler  and junior Ian Sheridan each had a pair of goals for #8 Dexter, now 13-1-4.

BB&N 8 @ St. George’s 5 – In a back-and-forth game, BB&N junior forwards Cam O’Neill (4g) and Bobby Mullins (1g,2a) led the Knights' attack. Senior forwards Hunter Johnson (2g,1a) and Gino Roy (1g,2a) had big days for St. George’s.

Middlesex 6 @ Rivers 4 – Rivers jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Middlesex came back to tie it at 3-3, and again at 4-4 before junior forward Ben Franks (1g,2a) scored the game-winner with 3:14 to play. Sophomore forward Eric Shaw (2g,2a) also had a big game for Middlesex, now 9-5-2. Rivers falls to 12-6-2.

@ Groton 5, Roxbury Latin 0 –Junior forward Matt Borghi (2g,1a) and junior defenseman PJ Johnson (1g,2a) led the Zebras’ offense, while junior goalie Matt Pompa earned the shutout, stopping 14 shots.

@ Millbrook 7, Kingswood Oxford 1 – Junior forwards Brett Supinski (2g,2a) and Ryan Harper (2g) led the Millbrook scoring.

Williston 10, Albany Academy 2 – Postgrad AJ Unker had a hat trick for Williston, and junior Matt Arnold added a pair. Sophomore Jake Mariello had a hat trick for AA.

@ Springfield Cathedral 5, Minnechaug 0 – Senior Artie Potter (2g,2a)  and sophomore forward Peter Crinella (2g,1a) figured in all of the goals for Cathedral, ranked #2 in Mass. high school hockey. Sophomore goalie Adam Mercer stopped all 14 shots he faced for the shutout win.

Wed. Jan. 23 Highlights
@ Berkshire 7, Hotchkiss 1 – The #3-ranked Lions extended their unbeaten streak to 15 today. The all-junior trio of Charlie Corcoran (3g,1a), Tipper Higgins (2g,1a), and Craig Puffer (5a) have it going. Senior G Tim Ernst (16/17) does too.

@ Kent 7, Taft 4 -- #9 Kent got a pair of goals from junior Dylan McCrory and extended their unbeaten streak to six (5-0-1).

@ Nobles 5, St. Sebastian’s 2 – Nobles (8-9-1) got two goals early in the second to break a 1-1 and never looked back. Junior Cody Todesco had a hat trick on two powerplay goals and an empty-netter. Senior G Connor Maher stopped 31 of 33 for the win. Nobles played their fourth straight game without their two leading scorers, sophomore Miles Wood and freshman Colin White. Wood is out for the season, having  fractured a growth plate in his foot when he lost an edge and hit the end boards. White, returning from a concussion, will be back on the ice for practice tomorrow.

@ Avon 4, Loomis 3 – Loomis, playing on the road, had leads of 2-1 and 3-2, but #10-ranked Avon got a third period goal from soph Chase Ziesky to tie it up and then, with 10 seconds left in regulation and Avon on the PP, senior Mason Kreuger netted the game-winner. A tough loss for the Pelicans. Avon, with just one loss in their last 11 games, improves to 10-4-3.

@ NMH 6, Cushing 4 – Host NMH came from behind, scoring five of the game’s last seven goals to knock off #6 Cushing. 6’4” sophomore Ben Freeman (2g,1a) led the Hoggers’ attack. Freshman Cam Askew had a pair of goals for Cushing.

@ New Hampton 2, Tilton 2 – Tilton reached the .500 mark by coming back from a 2-0 deficit on a second period goal by junior D Sean O’Brien and a third period tally by senior F Hunter Laslo. New Hampton junior G Tim Sestak stopped 35 of 37 but had to settle for a tie. Tilton outshot New Hampton 35-21.

@ Belmont Hill 4, Brooks 1 – Senior Mike Najjar (1g,3a) figured in all four goals for #4 Bel Hill. And all of Najjar’s points came in different ways – even-strength, shorthanded, on the PP, and with an empty-netter. Senior C Carl Hesler had a pair of goals.

@ Trinity-Pawling 4, Choate 3 – The Wild Boars held a 3-1 lead midway through the second period, but blew it, allowing host T-P to come back with three unanswered goals. The winner was scored by junior F Jason Lamot with 3:16 left in regulation. T-P junior G Greg Harney (26/29) earned the win; Choate soph Sam Tucker (29/33) took the loss.

Sat. Jan. 12 Highlights
@ Westminster 6, Salisbury 2 – Senior forwards David Hallisey (1g,4a) and Vincent Gisonti (2g), and sophomore D Frankie Sullivan (2g) led #8-ranked Westminster past the #4-ranked Crimson Knights. Junior Zac Hamilton was solid in net, stopping 33 of 35 shots. As for Salisbury, they used all three of their goalies, each for a period. In total, Salisbury allowed six goals on 22 shots. Westminster scored three of their goals when Salisbury was assessed a five-minute major following a Matt Pugh hit from behind in the first period.

@ Brooks 2, Roxbury Latin 1 (OT) -- A goal by freshman D Connor Moore at 3:46 of OT lifted Brooks, now 8-1-3 on the season, to a 2-1 win. Brooks outshot RL 43-11, but Roxbury’s Latin junior goaltender John Marchetti came up with a 41 save performance to throw a scare into the winners.

@ St. Sebastian’s 7, St. Paul’s 3 – The Arrows, now 9-4-1, employed a balanced attack as seven different scorers came through. St. Seb’s sophomore goalie Danny Higgins stopped 44 of 47 shots for the win. The Arrows were outshot 47-36.

Wed. Jan. 9 Highlights
@ Belmont Hill 3, Thayer 1 – A Will Golonka breakaway goal with 37 seconds left in the second period allowed host Belmont Hill to take a 2-1 lead and spelled the difference as the #2-ranked Hillies edged Thayer this afternoon. Earlier, at 7:40 of the first period, Thayer had taken a 1-0 lead when sophomore winger Lincoln Griffin, on the forecheck, won the puck and went short side on Belmont Hill goalie junior goalie Ryan McConnell.  Several minutes later, Belmont Hill senior Carl Hesler tied it up at 1-1, converting the rebound of a Golonka shot to tie it up at 1-1. Golonka, whose game-winner was the only tally in the second period, added an empty-netter in the final minute of regulation for the final margin of victory. Golonka, a junior, figured in all three Belmont Hill goals.

By the way, Thayer, with just one senior on their roster, was impressive, competing hard in all three zones, setting Belmont Hill back on their heels for good stretches, and keeping the game tight to the end. The Tony Amonte-coached Tigers, now 5-4-1 and with a 5-2 win over Nobles on Jan. 5th under their belt, look to get continually tougher over the next year or two as they mature together.
