Sat. Feb. 16 Highlights
Westminster 3 @ Berkshire 2 – Berkshire, on goals by juniors Adam Tracey (ppg) and Tipper Higgins, took at 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Midway through the second, Westy scored a pair of goals 20 seconds apart – juniors Mario Benicky and John Pappas converting – to knot it up at 2-2. And then, at 5:15 of the third, PG Ethan Holdaway scored the game winner, with assists going to seniors Ryan Mowery and Vincent Gisonti. For the game, Berkshire outshot Westminster, 30-29. Westy junior goaltender Zac Hamilton (28/30) picked up the win, and Berkshire senior Tim Ernst (26/29) was on the wrong side of the ledger for the first time since a 4-1 road loss to Gunnery back on Dec. 5th. Berkshire, ranked #1, falls to 19-3-3. Westminster improves to 14-6-2.

@ Canterbury 3, Kent 2 – Kent, after a goal by junior Lewis Zerter-Gossage with 1:57 left in the second period, took a 2-1 lead into the third but couldn’t hold it. Host Canterbury tied it up at 3:54 of the third on a Jordan Klotz goal and, with 2:45 left in regulation, junior Lucas Habich notched the game winner. Kent outshot Canterbury, 41-27, but senior goaltender Austin Essery (39/41) came up big for the Saints. Senior Charlie Fennell (24/27) took the loss. This is a tough loss for Kent, fighting for a spot in the Elite 8. They are now 13-6-3 in NEPSIHA play.

@ KUA 8, Cushing 3 – Seniors Nick Roberto (2g,2a), Niko Rufo (2g,2a), Casey Miller (1g,3a) and junior JD Dudek (1g,3a) each had four-point days. KUA led by 6-1 after one period, and 8-1 after two en route to the 8-3 win. The Wildcats are now 21-2-0 in NEPSIHA play, and Cushing is 14-7-4.

Salisbury 2 @ Avon 2 (OT) – Junior Nick Hutchison scored two goals late in the second period to pull the Winged Beavers into a 2-2 tie with #6-ranked Salisbury. Avon junior goaltender Cody Doyle kicked out 31 of 33; Salisbury soph Callum Booth stopped 30 of 32.

@ Deerfield 5, Exeter 0 – Junior Trevor Yates notched a hat trick and senior goaltender Jake Thoubboron earned the big shutout. This was a tough loss for Exeter, which is battling for a spot in the Elite 8. They fall to 12-7-5 in NEPSIHA play.

@ Bel Hill 3, Nobles 2 – A natural hat trick in the first period from junior Will Golonka helped the Hillies improve to 21-3-1 in NEPSIHA play. Golonka has 21 goals so far this season.

Choate 2 @ Taft 0 – Sophomore Charley Borek and senior Mickey Foley scored the goals and sophomore goaltender Sam Tucker kicked out 45 shots to lead #8 Choate to the shutout win.

Gunnery 9 @ Albany Academy 2 -- #4 Gunnery got big nights from junior Joey Fallon (2g,2a), senior Anthony Bird (1g,3a), senior Robert Darrar (2g,1a), and soph Ryan Dmowski (3a). Senior Dawson Sprigings (26/28) got the win as Gunnery improves to 19-2-4 in NEPSIHA play.

@ Milton 2, BB&N 2 (OT) – A goal by junior D Brien Diffley midway through the third lifted the visitors to the tie. Milton outshot BB&N 44-22, but BB&N senior Matt DeLuccia came up big with 42 saves. Senior Anthony Sabitsky scored both of Milton’s goals, giving him 15 on the season.

@ St. Sebastian’s 2, Governor’s 2 (OT) – Trailing 2-0 on the road, Gov’s got a pair of third-period goals from senior F Lucas Bombardier (his 18th) and senior D Geoff Sullivan to eke out a 2-2 tie. In net, senior Brendan McMenimen stopped 36 for Gov’s; junior Tedy Loughborough kicked out 25 for St. Seb’s. Gov’s (9-8-5) remains a game over .500 in NEPSIHA play.

@ Middlesex 2, Rivers 1 -- A goal by senior AJ Lucchese, his 18th of the season, late in the second period broke up a 1-1 tie and held up as the game-winner. In net, Middlesex freshman Derek Goguen (31/32) and Rivers soph Ryan Colena (37/39) were both strong. Middlesex improves to 13-5-4 in NEPSIHA play.

@ NMH 3, Loomis 2 --- Junior D Corey Moriarty scored early in the third to break up a 2-2 tie and the Hoggers held on for the win. In net, senior Ben Csiernik (31/33) earned the win.

St. George’s 3 @ Groton 3 (OT) – Senior Kristofer Shelton scored with 1:29 left in regulation to lift the visiting Dragons to the tie. Junior F Tim Doherty (1g,2a) figured in all three St. George’s goals. St. George’s (8-9-3) remains a game under .500 in NEPSIHA play.

@ Andover 4, Brooks 0 – Andover got goals from four different scorers and senior Ross Bendetson stopped all 18 shots he faced.

Tilton 4 @ Hebron 2 – Tilton got goals from four different scorers and PG goaltender Brenden Cain stopped 30 of 32 for the win. PG Ethan Studley scored both of Hebron’s goals. With the loss, Hebron drops a game under .500 in NEPSIA play at 8-9-1.

Portsmouth Abbey 8 @ Harvey 3 – Freshman Josh Vertentes scored three goals – he has 22 on the season – to help lead PA to the road win. Junior Robert Van Raamsdonk figured in all three of Harvey’s goals (2g,1a). He has 37 goals on the season.

@ Hill 3, Moses Brown 2 – Freshman Michael Novello scored a pair of goals for the Hill.

KUA KO’d
A year after sending just one team to Salem, NH for prep hockey’s Final Four, the Connecticut boarding schools made a clean sweep of things today as all four Connecticut schools won – and all non-Connecticut schools lost.

Last year at this time, only one school from the Nutmeg State was making its way to the big stage. That, of course, was Salisbury, and they were eliminated in the semifinals. This year, three of the four teams going – Kent, Salisbury, and Westminster -- are from the Founders’ League. And two of them had to really work to get there, as both Salisbury and Westminster needed OT. Hats off to them.

And hats off to #8 Gunnery, too. They didn’t need OT. All they did was put their end-of-the season two-game losing streak in the rear view mirror by playing David to #1 Kimball Union’s Goliath -- and coming out on top, 4-1.

Quarterfinals Highlights

Stuart/Corkery Tournament (Elite 8):

#7 Westminster 3 @ #2 Belmont Hill 2 (OT)
– Westminster PG F Ethan Holdaway (2g,1a) figured in all three of Westminster’s goals today, but it is the last one, when the Trinity recruit buried a partial breakaway, tucking the puck behind Belmont Hill junior goalie Ryan McConnell at 8:23 of OT, that will be remembered, as it gave the Martlets their 8th win in a row and propelled them to the Final Four, where they will face Salisbury in the second semifinal on Friday (8:00 pm).

Earlier, in the first period, Holdaway’s line, centered by senior Vincent Gisonti and with senior Ryan Mowery on the opposite wing, scored both of Westy’s goals, putting them up 2-0 midway through the period.

Belmont Hill came back, though, carrying the play at the end of the first and right through the second. Midway through the second, a Mike Najjar centering pass off the half wall deflected in to cut Westminster’s lead to 2-1, and that’s where things stayed for a long stretch. Late in the third, Bel Hill had a power play with 3:47 to go but, despite some good opportunities, couldn’t get the equalizer. That would come a few minutes later when, with McConnell pulled for the extra attacker, junior Joe Welch found Will Golonka alone at the back door. Golonka buried it to send the game to OT, where, at the 8:23 mark, Holdaway sent Westminster on to the next round. Westminster has been a perfect 8-0-0 in February, and will hope March is as kind. They face off against Salisbury Friday night at 8:00 pm in the second semifinal.

Belmont Hill outshot Westminster, 43-20, though it didn’t really seem that lopsided. Belmont Hill’s forwards had to generate a lot of offense coming out of their own end, and would wind up flinging a lot of shots on net and following up nicely, looking for rebounds. They had plenty of good opportunities, too, though there weren’t as many plays made down low as the shots on goal would indicate. That said, Westminster junior goalie Zac Hamilton was sharp, and wound up stopping 41 of 43.

#6 Salisbury 3 @ #3 Berkshire 2 (OT) --
A point shot off the stick of junior defenseman Will Toffey while Salisbury was on the power play at 12:33 of OT lifted #6 seed Salisbury to a 3-2 win over host – and #3 seed – Berkshire.

The two teams traded goals in the first period. Berkshire got on the board just seconds in on a goal from junior Tipper Higgins, but Salisbury junior Evan Smith – who would figure in all three Salisbury goals before the day was done -- was able to answer at the 14:23 mark.

After a scoreless second period, Higgins, with his team on the PP, struck again – his 20th goal of the season – to give the Bears a 2-1 lead. However, Salisbury senior D Willie Brooks evened things up at 2-2 with 4:28 remaining to send the game to OT.

Salisbury outshot Berkshire, 34-25. Sophomore Callum Booth (23/25) got the win; senior Tim Ernst (31/34) took the loss.

The Crimson Knights move on, and face Westminster in the second semi on Friday (8:00 pm).

#8 Gunnery 4, #1 Kimball Union 1 (at Deerfield Academy) After a scoreless first period, Gunnery senior F Robert Darrar put his team up 1-0 at 4:49 of the second. Several minutes later, KUA answered when senior D Doyle Somerby cashed in on the power play to make it 1-1. But that was it as far as KUA scoring went. Meanwhile, Gunnery answered with three straight tallies, from senior Marc Cibelli, junior Chris Cobham, and senior Anthony Bird.

In net, Gunnery senior Dawson Sprigings kicked out 27 of the 28 shots he faced for the win, but he wasn’t really forced to stand on his head or anything. He was steady as a rock, making all the saves he was expected to. The real key to this game was the team effort Gunnery showed, running a 1-2-2 to perfection, bottling up the high-powered Wildcat forwards and forcing them into 1-on-1 attempts to get their offense going. And it never did get going.

And, with that, it will be Gunnery that is going to Salem this weekend. They take on Kent in the first semifinal on Friday (5:30 pm).

#4 Kent 7, #5 Dexter 1 (@ Loomis)Junior Anthony Rinaldi notched a hat trick to lead the Lions’ attack. Junior Lewis Zerter-Gossage (2a) and senior D Mike Graham (2a) each had two points for Kent, which outshot Dexter 35-22. Kent will face Gunnery in the first semifinal on Friday (5:30 pm).

Martin/Earl Tournament (Large School):

@ #3 Avon 8, #6 Choate 0 – The #3-seeded Winged Beavers had no problem with the #6-seeded Wild Boars today, outshooting their visitors 44-14 and outscoring them 8-0.

Junior Nick Hutchison (1g,3a), senior Peter McGinley (2g,1a), soph Chase Zieky (1g,1a), senior Mason Krueger (1g,1a), and junior Sam Levin (1g,1a) led the attack.

Junior Cody Doyle, with 14 saves, earned the shutout. Avon will go up against Thayer Academy in a semifinal tilt on Saturday (5:30 pm).

@ #1 Cushing 4, #8 Governor’s 2 – Cushing got goals from four different scorers and senior Mike Dion stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced for the win. Gov’s senior Brendan McMenimen stopped (45/49) took the loss.

Lucas Bombardier (1g,1a) and Nathan Ferriero (2a) figured in both Gov’s goals.

Cushing faces Exeter Saturday at 3:00 pm.

#5 Exeter 6 @ #4 Milton 3 – PGs Jake Lessick (2g,3a) and Colby Cretella (2g,2a) led Exeter’s attack. And senior John Cross (1g,2a) wasn’t far behind.

For Milton, seniors Elliot Vorel (1g,2a) and Anthony Sabitsky (2g) supplied the bulk of the offense.

@ #2 Thayer 4, #7 St. Sebastian’s 3 (OT) -- An OT goal from senior Jon Sheedy sent the Tigers to Salem, where they will face Avon Old Farms in a Saturday semifinal (5:30 pm).

Thayer went up early, behind consecutive goals from freshman Ty Amonte and a single tally from sophomore D Jack Judge.

St. Seb’s, down 3-0 late in the second, came up with three unanswered goals – from Tommy Kelley, John Doherty, and Jake McLaughlin – to make it a 3-3 game with a little over seven minutes to play. And that’s where it stayed, until Sheedy came through.

St. Seb’s outshot Thayer, 42-39. Tigers junior goaltender kicked out 39 shots for the win.

Piatelli/Simmons Tournament (Small School):

@ #3 Brooks 4, #6 Middlesex 0 --- Brooks cashed in on a pair of power plays in the first period, getting goals from freshman D Connor Moore and senior F Greg Conrad. Senior Andrew Bruno added an even-strength goal early in the second to make it 3-0, and that was all they needed. Mitch Nylen had two assists, and Moore, in addition to his goal, notched an assist. Senior Colin Langham stopped all 19 shots he faced.

#1 Kents Hill 4, #8 Millbrook 1 (@ Lawrence Academy) – Junior forwards Jared Cockrell (1g,2a) and Oscar Croon (1g,2a) each had three points and senior D Logan Day (1g,1a) chipped in with two to lead Kents Hill today.

Millbrook outshot Kents Hill by a healthy margin --- 31-17 – but Kents Hill junior goaltender Kyle Porter came up big, kicking out 30 of 31 to send his team on to Salem for the semifinals on Saturday.

Note:

Two postponed games will be played Thursday afternoon: They are: #7 Holderness @ #2 Rivers (4:15 pm), and #5 Tilton @ #4 Winchendon (5:00 pm).

Sat. Feb. 23 Highlights
Kent 4 @ Choate 3 (OT) – In a tilt with big playoff implications, Kent, trailing at Choate 3-2 in the final minute of play, and with the extra attacker on, cashed in when junior Lewis Zerter-Gossage scored from the top of the slot, a low shot into the corner of the net, to tie the game at 3-3 and send it to OT. With 28 seconds left in the extra frame, junior Brendan Soucie, from behind the goal line, dished the puck out front to junior Jimmy Ricciardi, who went top shelf for the game winner. Soucie also had an assist on the game-tying goal.

Earlier in the game, Choate had a 2-0 lead, but Kent came back and tied it at 2-2. With 5:04 left in the second, though, sophomore Jeremy Germain gave the Wild Boars a 3-2 lead which would hold up…until the final eight seconds of regulation.

In the game, Kent outshot Choate, 42-36. Soph Sam Tucker (38/42) had a strong game for the Wild Boars, especially in the third when he came up with some big saves to keep his team in the game. Junior Charlie Fennell (33/36) earned the win for Kent. The Lions, who have a strong record vs. the iron, are in very good shape for the Elite 8, and might even earn home ice. Choate, on the other hand, had a strong season, but faltered in the last week, losing three straight. The Wild Boars finish the regular season 13-9-3 and await to see how their prospects are for the large school tournament.

@ Berkshire 4, Gunnery 1 – In a season-ending battle of heavyweights, the Berkshire School avenged an early-season (Dec. 5) loss to Gunnery, coming back from a 1-0 deficit early in the third with four unanswered goals, the final one into an empty net. Gunnery soph Ryan Dmowski scored his 18th goal of the season to put Gunnery up 1-0 at 11:25 of the first, and the game stayed that way until junior Jeff Thompson got Berkshire on the board at 4:01 of the third. Within the next five-plus minutes the Bears would add two more – from juniors Craig Puffer (his 16th) and Nick O’Connor (his 13th) – to take a 3-1 lead. Charlie O’Connor scored his 16th of the year -- an empty-netter -- with 1:07 left. Once again, senior Tim Ernst (34 saves) came up big for Berkshire. Gunnery outshot their hosts, 35-24. The Bears will now wait and see if they have locked up home ice for the NEPSIHA playoffs starting Wednesday.

Avon 5 @ Loomis 3 – Avon got goals from five different scorers and sophomore Tucker Weppner stopped 28 of 31 shots for the win. Avon improves to 14-8-4. Loomis drops to 13-11-1, a huge leap for a program that finished last season 2-23-0, but probably didn't come up with enough of a finishing kick to propel themselves into the large school tournament.

@ NMH 8, Tabor 1 – Junior Spencer Lee (2g) and PG Kevin Cotrone (2g,1a) and senior Jake Marley (1g,2a) paced the Hoggers’ attack and senior Ben Csiernik stopped 36 of 37. NMH finishes at 9-16-1; Tabor at 7-18-1.

@ Kents Hill 7, Hebron 3 – Junior Oscar Croon (2g,3a), junior Jared Cockrell (1g,3a) and senior D Logan Day (1g, 3a) led the attack. Kents Hill is now 18-5-1, and is in excellent position to gain a high seed in the small school tournament -- possibly #1. Last year they finished 13-6-0. Hebron finishes a game under .500 at 9-10-1.

@ Millbrook 6, T-P 4 (Empire Cup consolation)– Junior Brett Supinski had a pair of goals. Millbrook finishes the season at 10-10-4 and will wait to see if they make the small school tournament. Right now, they are on the bubble.

@ KUA 5, Proctor 1 (Lakes Region semifinal) – KUA got goals from five different scorers and senior goaltender Ryan Lund kicked out 20 of 21 shots as KUA finishes NEPSIHA regular season play at 23-2-0. They will host Holderness tomorrow (Sun. 2/24) at 1:00 pm for the Lakes Region championship. The game will not count toward the NEPSIHA calculations. In the meantime, the Wildcats -- a virtual lock for home ice -- will wait to see where they are seeded for the Elite 8.

@ Brooks 4, BB&N 2 – Junior Ian Speliotis scored two goals and senior Colin Langham (23/25) had a strong game in net as Brooks won the Eberhart Division crown – for the second season in a row -- in an end-of-season winner-take-all tilt. Brooks is 14-7-5 and in a good possibility for home ice in the small school tournament starting Wednesday. BB&N is 15-8-3.

@ Cushing 8, Berwick 2 – Junior Michael Turner and freshman Cam Askew each had two goals for Cushing. Junior James Winkler scored both Berwick goals. Senior Mike Dion kicked out 11 of the 12 shots he faced for the win. Cushing appears to have home ice for the large school playoffs pretty much locked up.

Andover 5 @ Exeter 2 – Junior Michael Lata scored a pair of goals – his team-leading 13th and 14th of the season -- and senior Ross Bendetson kicked out 30 of 32 shots he faced to lead Andover to a win over its archrival. Exeter, which never held a lead, outshot Andover 32-22.

@ Thayer 3, St. Sebastian’s 1 (Valicenti Cup) – After nearly 40 minutes of scoreless hockey – and a goaltending battle between junior goalies Rob McGovern of Thayer and Tedy Loughborough of St. Seb’s -- Thayer, with a PPG and shorthanded goal 2:09 apart early in the third, took a lead they would not give up. Sophomore winger Lincoln Griffin, who just committed to Northeastern this week, had a goal and an assist for Thayer. St. Seb’s outshot the Tigers, 27-24. Thayer finished the regular season with a 13-7-2 NEPSIHA record. More importantly, they were 3-0 over the last week, which included wins over Milton and St. Seb's, two teams high in the RPI. Thayer looks like a lock for the large school tournament, and has a very good chance at home ice Wednesday. St. Seb's, 13-10-3, is very much alive for a slot in the large school tournament.

Brunswick 3, Albany Academy 2 (Empire Cup Championship) – Brunswick came back from a 2-0 deficit to win the 2013 Empire Cup. After senior d-man Peter Khoury scored a power play goal at 11:28 of the second to cut the deficit to 2-1, Brunswick junior Stephan Seegar scored a shortie midway through the third to tie the game at 2-2 and -- less than two minutes later -- scored an unassisted game winner. Senior G Gryphon Richardson (23/25) got the win.

@ Taft 6, Hotchkiss 1 – Senior Bobby Dutton (2g), junior Cole Maier (2g), PG Henry Pierandri (1g,1a) soph Trevor McGee (2a), and junior Matt Foos (2a) each had two points for the Rhinos. Senior goaltenders Ryan Coon (15/15) and Marc Schiller (16/17) split time evenly and shared the win. Taft finished the season on a high note, winning four of their last five to finish the season a game over .500.

St. George’s 4 @ Middlesex 4 (OT) --  Middlesex, which led 3-2 after one period, allowed two second period goals to fall behind 4-3. However, with 31seconds left in the second, senior Chris Jellison tied it up for the hosts. Middlesex outshot St. George’s 58-36. Junior Justin Ferriera (2g,1a) and senior AJ Lucchese (3a) each had three points for Middlesex, which finishes the regular season at 14-6-5. Sophomore Hunter Johnson had two goals for the Dragons, while St. George’s senior goalie Will Silverstein was kept busy (54/58) in a losing cause.

@ Rivers 6, PA 3 – Junior Miles Gendron (3g,2a) figured in five of Rivers’ six goals. Freshman Josh Vertentes scored all three PA goals and now has 25 on the season. Rivers, which finishes the regular season at 17-8-2, outshot PA 60-17. Rivers looks to have home ice advantage in the small school tournament starting Wednesday.

Holderness 4 @ Tilton 3 (OT) (Lakes Region semifinal) – Holderness, trailing 3-1 halfway through the second period, came back with three unanswered goals – one in the second from senior Tyler Mathieu , one in the third from senior d-man Phil Johansson (his team-leadaing 28th point of the season), and the finalone in OT from Mathieu, his second goal of the game and 13th of the season. Holderness travels to Kimball Union tomorrow (Sun.) for the Lakes Region final, a 1:00 pm faceoff.

St. Mark’s 4 @ Groton 3 – St. Mark’s, down 3-2 with less than two minutes left in the third, got goals from senior Mark Upton, with 1:14 left to tie it, and, with 33 seconds left, from senior JT Lynch to win it. St. Mark’s finishes the season at 10-15-2 – not bad at all considering they started the season 0-8.

RPI & JSPR, Thurs. noon 2/21/13

Notes:

-- Dexter does not have a strong schedule, so even though their RPI (#5) is good they lose comparisons to Kent and Exeter, both of whom are below them in RPI but ahead of them in record against TUC's and common opponents. Dexter has a great won-loss record at 20-1-5 but they have only played four of the top teams. The key is that, unlike previous years, they have lost only one game all season, which is no small thing. So, while their margin of error is much smaller than other teams because of their schedule, they should be in the Elite 8 tourney if they win out.

-- Gunnery compares favorably with everyone below them in RPI -- except Kent, to whom they have lost twice in head-to-head play this season. In addition, Kent now has a better TUC record than Gunnery due, in significant part, to Canterbury dropping out the top 16 (they are at #17 now). That’s a blow to Gunnery, which has a 2-0-1 record vs. Canterbury. Last week, Gunnery had a better TUC record than Kent and therefore won the JSPR comparison between the two schools. Yesterday, however, Gunnery lost to a top 16 team and Canterbury dropped out of the top 16, hence they now lose the comparison with Kent.

-- As of today, three small schools – KUA, Gunnery, and Dexter -- would make the Elite 8. After that, there are only two other small schools – Kents Hill and Rivers -- before you get to #24-29 slots in the RPI rankings, at which point you find six small schools in a row. We feel this speaks well to the concept of having both large school and small school tournaments -- in addition to the Elite 8, of course.

-- The top 8 in RPI are also currently in the Elite 8 tournament, so the RPI/JSPR correlation is pretty high right now. That can change. Keep in mind that JSPR just takes everything to a finer point by means of measuring the best against the best.

-- Here are some weekend games that bear watching -- and why:

Canterbury @ Salisbury (4:30 pm Fri.) --A Canterbury win would drop Salisbury, but would also catapult Canterbury back into the top 16, thus affecting Gunnery, Kent, Berkshire and other top teams who have played Canterbury.

St. Sebastian's @ Thayer
(2:00 pm Sat.)  -- Two top 16 teams, though both near the bottom (Thayer is at #11 and St. Seb’s is at #16). A loss could drop either one out of the top 16 and thus mix things up above them.

Gunnery @ Berkshire
(2:30 pm Sat.) -- Two top 8 teams could affect things a lot as it will affect TUC records of both teams.

Kent @ Choate (5:00 pm Sat.) -- Two top 16 teams. Kent is higher than Choate due to a better TUC record, though this game could affect that.

-- Finally, snow could be the biggest challenge this weekend. It is projected to arrive Saturday afternoon, though the National Weather Service reports that the heaviest snow will come overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning. Whatever the case, Salisbury vs. Canterbury and Westminster vs. Deerfield have been moved to Friday while Cushing has moved up the start time of their Saturday home game by a couple of hours. Look for more changes to follow. Hopefully, all games get played. Remember, games played through Saturday count toward the NEPSHIA playoff standings. Anything after that does not (see Lakes Region tournament). This could be a huge deal as only games that are played count -- and every game affects the standings in some way.

Wed. Feb. 20 Highlights
Westminster 7 @ Gunnery 4 – Westy PG Ethan Holdaway scored a natural hat trick in the second period and added a fourth goal – an empty-netter – with 1:07 left in regulation. Westminster got a big game from junior G Zac Hamilton (39/43). For Gunnery, senior Dawson Sprigings (19/25) took the loss. Westy, after suffering through a five-game winless streak (0-5-1) in late January, has now gone 6-0 thus far in February, and, with a 16-6-2 record, have forced their way right back into the Elite 8 picture with three consecutive wins over Berkshire, Choate, and now Gunnery. Gunnery, 20-3-4 , saw their five-game winning streak snapped. Westy has one game left (vs. Deerfield Sat.); Gunnery has one game left (@ Berkshire Sat.)

@ Loomis 5, Choate 1 – Junior Cory Swift scored two goals and senior goaltender Danny Tirone stopped 31 of 32 shots to lead host Loomis to a big win over the Wild Boars, who have stumbled, losing two games in the last two days (they lost to Westy yesterday). Loomis outshot Choate, 52-32. Wild Boars soph goaltender Andrew Tucci had 47 saves in a losing cause. Choate is now 13-8-3, with one game left, a home tilt Sat. vs.Kent. Loomis improves to 13-10-1.

@ Kent 7, Deerfield 3 – Junior James Ricciardi scored a natural hat trick as host Kent exploded for five first period goals to take a 5-1 lead into the first intermission. Deerfield cut it to 5-3 in the third, but that was as close as they would get as Kent salted it away with a late empty-netter. Senior Charlie Fennell (27/30) picked up the win as Kent improves to 15-6-3 with one game left (@ Choate on Sat.). Deerfield falls to 11-10-2 with one game left (@ Westy on Sat.).

Berkshire 4 @ Millbrook 3 – Berkshire, trailing 3-2 early in the third, got goals from juniors Adam Tracey and Tipper Higgins (ppg) to pull it out. Junior Brett Supinski (2g,1a) figured in all three Millbrook goals. The Bears went 3-for-4 on the PP. Berkshire improves to 21-3-3; Millbrook falls to .500 at 9-9-4.

Taft 4 @ Trinity-Pawling 3 (OT) – Junior Andrew Gaus won it in OT for the Rhinos. Earlier, with 3:32 left in regulation, T-P junior Charlie Zuccarini had forced OT by tying things up at 3-3. Taft sophomore goaltender Joseph Lissak (33/36) got the win for Taft; soph Felix Marcotte-Hetu (30/34) took the loss for T-P.

@ Belmont Hill 2, St. Paul’s 1 (OT) – Sophomore Charlie McConnell scored at 1:15 of OT to lift host Belmont Hill to a big win. Earlier, Bel Hill junior Mike Najjar had scored at 12:32 of the third to allow the hosts just to get to OT. Bel Hill improves to 22-3-1.

@ Dexter 6, Holderness 0 – Dexter rolls along, improving to 20-1-5, with a 6-0 home shutout of Holderness. Junior Mark Webber scored two goals for Dexter.

@ Salisbury 3, Hotchkiss 2 – After PG Matt Pugh scored a PPG midway through the third to put the hosts up 3-1, Hotchkiss was able to answer, cutting the lead to 3-2 on a goal by senior D Ryan Begoon with 1:02 in regulation. Hotchkiss, however, was unable to get the equalizer. Salisbury improves to 17-5-3. They have an eight-game unbeaten streak going, and finish at home Sat. afternoon vs. Canterbury.

Brooks 4 @ Rivers 3 – Brooks got goals from four different scorers. Rivers made things interesting late, when soph Joe Sacco scored with the goalie pulled and 19 seconds on the clock. That was as close as Rivers would get, though. Rivers falls to 16-8-2. Brooks, now 12-7-5, has two games left, both at home (vs. St. George’s and BB&N). The game vs. George’s, which is tomorrow, Thursday 2/21, at 7:15 pm ( immediately following the girls’ game) is Pink the Rink Night, with all game proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Cushing 4 @ New Hampton 0 -- Freshman forward Cam Askew scored a pair of goals and sophomore goalie Joey Daccord stopped all 16 shots he faced as Cushing improved to 15-7-4 in NEPSIHA play.

Middlesex 5 @ Groton 3 – Middlesex freshman goaltender Derek Goguen stopped 40 of the 43 shots he faced to lead Middlesex, now 14-5-4, to the win. Middlesex got goals from five different scorers.

@ St. Sebastian’s 3, Lawrence 3 (OT) – St. Seb’s junior Corey Ronan scored with 3:55 left in the third to lift the host Arrows to the tie. Junior Tedy Loughborough had 35 saves for St. Seb’s; junior Drew Michals had 24 for LA.

BB&N 6 @ Roxbury Latin 3 – Junior Bobby Mullins (2g,3a) figured in five of BB&N’s six goals today.

@ St. Mark’s 4, St. George’s 1 – St. Mark’s got goals from four different scorers. St. George’s falls a game under .500 at 9-10-3 and have two games left (vs. Brooks tomorrow and Middlesex Saturday).

Thayer 2 @ Milton 0 – Junior goaltender Rob McGovern came up big for the Tigers, stopping all 38 shots he faced for the shutout win. Soph Drew Hotte (21/23) took the loss. Junior D Ryan Peterson and sophomore winger Lincoln Griffin scored Thayer’s goals.

Exeter 2 @ Pomfret 1 – A goal from sophomore Stanley Brenner with 1:08 left in the second period turned out to be the game-winner. Soph Michael Lackey (24/25) earned the win in the Exeter net; Pomfret senior Alex Joyce (30/32) was the hard-luck loser.

Nobles 5 @ Governor’s 4 – Junior F Cody Todesco scored a hat trick – one goal in each period – to lead Nobles to the win. With the loss, Gov’s drops to .500 at 9-9-5 (with one game remaining, vs. Berwick on Friday).

Albany Academy 6 @ Williston 3 – Sophomore F Jake Marello scored four goals – two even strength, one shorty, and an empty-netter – to lead Albany Academy to the road win. In net, junior Josh Egan kicked (35/38) earned the win.

Tilton 6 @ Vermont Academy 1 – Senior Hunter Laslo scored two goals and PG goaltender Brenden Cain (23/24) came up big in net to lead the Rams, who improve to 16-10-3.

Avon 3 @ Canterbury 2 -- A Mason Kreuger PPG – his second goal of the game – lifted Avon to a 3-2 road win at Canterbury. Junior Cody Doyle (29/31) got the win; Saints senior Austin Essery (22/25) took the loss.

@ Andover 5, NMH 1—Senior Eddie Ellis (1g,3a) figured in four of the five Andover goals and junior Jake Pelton (17/18) picked up the win in net.

Kingswood-Oxford 6 @ Portsmouth Abbey  2 – K-O got goals from six different scorers and senior Anthony Giordano stopped 44 out of 46 to lead the Wyverns to victory.

@ Berwick 7, Pingree 0 – Senior Lucas Michaud scored a hat trick – on single tallies in the first, second, and third periods – and senior Max Motew stopped all 21 shots he faced for the shutout.

RPI:

RPI, Mon. noon 2/18/13

Some thoughts on the numbers:

-- By beating Kent, Canterbury jumped into the RPI top 16. This impacted other teams (Kent, Gunnery, Berkshire, Belmont Hill, Westminster, Choate), all of whom have played Canterbury this season. The Saints have a tough schedule remaining (@ Gunnery, home vs. Avon, @ Salisbury) which will affect a lot of teams -- themselves included, of course.

-- Dexter is helped out by having Kents Hill in the top 16, which moves them to .500 vs. TUC. As a result, Dexter wins a couple more JSPR comparisons.

-- Berkshire, though dropping three slots, is still solidly in fourth. At this point, it would take a huge losing streak to drop any of the top four teams – KUA, Belmont Hill, Gunnery, and Berkshire -- out of the Elite 8 tournament. In addition, it’s likely they will all hold onto the top seeds. The bottom four seeds are very much up for grabs, however.

-- Westminster, which defeated Berkshire on Saturday, made a huge jump in both RPI and JSPR.

-- Loomis dropped out of the top 16. This has had an impact on a number of teams, particularly Founders’ League teams, as Loomis had a lot of games against the top 16.

-- On the small school front, Millbrook – at 9-8-4 -- is one small school that is close to .500. If they dip below, as they did last year, they will not be allowed to play in the post season (per NEPSAC tournament rules).

--- Look for standings to change a lot though this week. There’s no shortage of parity this season.

RPI and JSPR: Updated Numbers
Here are the updated JSPR numbers as of noon today.

 1. Berkshire (15)
 2. KUA (14)
 3. Belmont Hill (13)
 4. Gunnery (12)
 5. Kent (11)
 6. Salisbury (10)
 7. Exeter (8)
 8. Dexter (8)
 9. Choate (7)
10. Cushing (7)
11. Westminster (4)
12. Milton (4)
13. Avon (4)
14. Thayer (1)
15. Loomis (1)
16. St. Sebastian's (1)

Here, for a deeper look at the above, and how the tiebreakers work, are links to printable PDF files of both the RPI and JSPR rankings.

RPI, 2/14/13

JSPR, 2/14/13

Some thoughts on the numbers:

-- Dexter, despite a 17-1-5 record and a virtual dead heat with Kent and Salisbury in RPI, has dropped down to #8 in the JSPR Ranking. This is where JSPR really gets to the nitty gritty in measuring strength of schedule. Dexter is 0-1-2 against top 16 teams (a loss to Exeter and two ties vs. Cushing) and their opponents’ and opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage are also both low. JSPR, for those of you who are new to this, is a mathematical formula that aims to determine how each team would fare if all played an identical, equally tough schedule. The system was created when Div. II prep hockey was dropped four years ago and smaller schools with historically weaker schedules suddenly became Div. I teams.

-- Choate is helped by their TUC Ranking as they are an impressive 4-1-2 against the Top 16 (two wins over Avon, plus single wins over Westy and Loomis; a loss to Salisbury; and ties vs. Berkshire and Exeter). However, all of that is balanced against the fact that they have also lost a number of games to teams that they ‘should have’ beaten. If the season were over right now the Wild Boars, currently at #9 in JSPR, would be kicking themselves. Of course, every year teams that finish just south of the Elite 8 have one or more games that really eat at them.

-- Milton Academy moves into the Top 16 this week and Canterbury moves out. Milton, which beat Belmont Hill for the second time this season yesterday, has played and defeated a number of top 16 teams, but they have also lost to a number of them.

-- Keep an eye on which teams are entering into and dropping out of the top 16 over the next couple of weeks. That is likely to have a greater impact on who makes the Elite 8 tournament than anything else.

-- Right now, the top four teams – Berkshire, KUA, Belmont Hill, and Gunnery – look like a solid lock to make the Elite 8. They are significantly ahead of the next four in RPI. That said, their seeding -- and even whether or not they earn home ice – is still up in the air. Berkshire vs. Gunnery on the final day of the regular season could be a huge game.

-- Dexter, Kent and Salisbury are in a virtual dead heat for the fifth RPI spot but this could easily change in the next few games.

-- After a down year last year, the Founders’ League has bounced back, with six teams currently in the Top 16.

-- We published this a few weeks ago, but a couple of people asked us where exactly on the site it was hidden away, so here it is again, the large school/small school breakdown. With this document (it's a Word doc), you can begin to get a sense of which schools, should they fail to reach the NEPSIHA 'Elite 8', would land in the Martin/Earl 'Large School Tournament' and which teams would land in the Piatelli/Simmons 'Small School Tournament.'

Wed. Feb. 13 Highlights

Juniors Tipper Higgins (3a), Craig Puffer (1g,1a), and Charlie Corcoran (1g,1a) each had their usual productive game. Berkshire last lost on Dec. 5, at which time they dropped to 2-2 on the season. They have gone 17-0-3 since.

@ KUA 2, Proctor 1 – Senior Nick Roberto’s goal at 13:43 of the third period lifted #3 KUA to a 2-1 win over Proctor Academy. KUA outshot Proctor but had a hard time solving Harvard recruit Merrick Madsen (45/47). Senior Ryan Lund (12/13) got the win in the KUA net. KUA is now 20-2-0 in NEPSIHA play.

Groton 2 @ Brooks 1 – Groton junior goalie Matt Pompa came up huge, kicking out 43 of 44 shots, and junior D Joe Gentile scored the game winner with 20 seconds left in regulation to lead the Zebras to the upset win. Brooks outshot Groton 44-10.

Trinity-Pawling 6 @ Millbrook 4 -- After spotting their hosts an early 1-0 lead, T-P came back with three goals within three minutes -- and never looked back. Senior Andrew Zona had a pair of goals for T-P.

@ Tilton 8, Brewster 0 – Senior Blaise Healy (1g,3a) and PG Peyton Baldillez (2g,1a) led the Rams’ attack. PG goaltender Brenden McCain posted a 25-save shutout.

Governor’s 6 @ Lawrence 4 – Senior Lucas Bombardier (2g,2a) figured in four of the six Governor’s goals. For Lawrence, senior George Hunkele (3a) figured in three of their four goals. With the win, Gov’s moved a game above .500 in NEPSIHA play and are now 9-8-4.

Kent 4 @ Hotchkiss 1 -- #7-ranked Kent got goals from four different scorers and senior Charlie Fennell kicked out 15 of 16 to pick up the win. Kent improves to 13-5-3 in NEPSIHA play.

@ St. George’s 6, Roxbury Latin 3 – Junior Tim Doherty (1g, 3a) and senior Kristofer Shelton (1g,1a) led the Dragons’ attack.

Taft 5 @ Deerfield 3 – PG Henry Pierandri (1g,1a) and junior Andrew Gaus (1g,1a) led the Rhinos’ attack and senior goaltender Ryan Coon kicked out 25 of the 28 shots he faced for the win. With the loss, Deerfield drops to .500 in NEPSIHA play. Taft is one game under at 8-9-2.

@ Canterbury 8, Williston 0 – Soph Shane Sellar (2g,2a), PG Anthony Langevin (2g,2a), and senior Jeff Celniker (1g,3a) each had four points for the Saints. Junior Christian Short (29/29) posted the shutout. Canterbury outshot Williston, 54-29.

@ Dexter 5, Berwick 4 -- #5-ranked Dexter got a hat trick from junior Jake McDonough (3g,1a). Senior defenseman Charlie Donners (1g,2a) had a big game as well. Junior James Winkler had a goal and an assist for Berwick.

Rivers 2 @ St. Mark’s 0 -- Sophomore Ryan Colena had a shutout and sophs Hunter Dempsey and Joe Sacco scored the goals. Rivers improves to 14-5-2 on the season.

@ Middlesex 7, PA 0 – Junior Justin Ferreira (2g,2a) had a four-point afternoon and senior goaltender Derek Williams posted the shutout (16/16). Middlesex, now 12-5-4, outshot PA 43-16.

@ Holderness 2, Winchendon 1 -- Senior defenseman Phil Johansson’s second period goal stood up as the game winner. In net, John Musciano (29/30) took the win, while Winchendon senior Simon Jasmin (35/37) was the hard-luck loser.

Kents Hill 4 @ Bridgton 3 – Kents Hill, down 3-1 on the road, came back with three unanswered goals, the last a PPG from senior Marc Dufour at 16:19 of the third, to pick up the win.

@ St. Paul’s 5, St. Sebastian’s 4 – This was a 1-1 game after one, but host St. Paul’s exploded for four unanswered goals in the second period to take a 5-1 lead into the second intermission. But the game wasn’t over, as St. Sebastian’s came back with three in the third – the final an Alex Calabro goal with 1:01 on the clock to cut the SPS lead to 5-4. The Arrows, however, were unable to get the equalizer. Senior Nate Wark (2g,1a) had three points for St. Paul’s today.  Sophomore defenseman Noah Hanifin had a pair of goals for the Arrows. St. Paul’s outshot St. Seb’s, 39-37. The Arrows fall to 13-9-1 in NEPSIHA play.

Exeter 3 @ NMH 0 -- #10-ranked Exeter got a 29-save shutout performance from sophomore Michael Lackey to improve to 12-6-5 on the season. RPI and JSPR Rankings
Here are the current RPI and JSPR Rankings. These numbers are current as of Friday morning, Feb. 8.

RPI:
 1. Belmont Hill
 2. Berkshire
 3. Gunnery
 4. KUA
 5. Dexter
 6. Salisbury
 7. Kent
 8. Cushing
 9. Avon
10. Westminster
11. Exeter
12. Loomis
13. St. Seb’s
14. Choate
15. Thayer
16. Canterbury

JSPR:
 1. Belmont Hill (15)
 2. Gunnery (14)
 3. Berkshire (13)
 4. KUA (12)
 5. Salisbury (10)
 6. Kent (9) -- Kent wins the direct JSPR comparison with Dexter
 7. Dexter (9)
 8. Cushing (8)
 9. Choate (8)
10. Avon (6) -- Avon wins the direct JSPR comparison with Exeter
11. Exeter (6)
12. Westminster (3) – see below
13. Loomis (3) – see below
14. Canterbury (3) – see below
15. St. Sebastian’s (1)
16. Thayer (0)

-- There is a complex three-way tie at the #12 spot. It breaks down like this:
Westminster wins the JSPR comparison over Canterbury; Canterbury wins JSPR comparison over Loomis; and  Loomis wins JSPR comparison over Westminster. That still leaves a three-way tie, so a tiebreaker is in order. For that, the RPI is utilized, and  Westminster (#10 in RPI) gets the nod over Loomis (#12 in RPI) and Canterbury (#16 in RPI).

For the full RPI Rankings of all schools, with the percentage figure, and the JSPR Rankings as well, please go to:

RPI and JSPR 2-8-13

Notes:

You may have noticed KUA's drop in RPI. This is happening because, while the Wildcats have a great winning percentage, their opponents’ winning percentage and opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage is not as stellar. KUA has only played four games against top 16 teams. Thus, their second loss of the season – in OT to Andover on Wednesday – plummeted them from first to fourth.

You may have also noticed that Choate, while 14th in RPI, is 8th in the JSPR Rankings. This is due to the Wild Boars’ strong 3-1-3 record against teams under consideration. Many of their losses have come against teams out of the Top 16 – even way out, like Pomfret. However, that strong record against the iron of prep hockey will help then going forward, assuming they get back on track after Wednesday’s loss. They do have four games against Top 16 teams remaining (Westminster, Avon, Loomis, and Kent) so things could change quite quickly for them.

There are three small schools currently in the Top 16, but all of them are currently in the top 8 in both RPI and JSPR (Gunnery, KUA, and Dexter)

After two years of it being the opposite, this time around the West has more teams in the Top 16 than the East (10 vs. 6). That includes six Founders’ League teams.

There seems to be a big break in the RPI between the top four teams and the rest.  This probably means that #1-4 are looking solid for the Elite 8 Tournament whether or not they gain home ice for the quarterfinals.  Belmont Hill seems to have the easiest schedule going forward, with no games remaining against top 16 teams.  KUA has one game against a top 16 team (Cushing). Berkshire plays Westminster and Gunnery. And Gunnery plays Loomis, Westminster, and Berkshire.

Loomis has the toughest remaining schedule. Five of their final six games are against top 16 teams (Gunnery, Salisbury, Avon, Choate, and Westminster).  If they make it into the top 16 -- and either one of the tournaments -- they will certainly have earned it.

Wed. Feb. 6 Highlights
@ Andover 4, Kimball Union 3 (OT) – In the upset of the day – the season, really – host Andover got a goal 28 seconds into OT from senior Eddie Ellis to hand #1-ranked KUA its second loss of the season. Four of the their last five wins have been 2-1 decisions. Thus far on the season, the #8-ranked Crimson Knights have played eight games in which they have scored only two goals, and another four in which they have scored only three. They haven’t played in many laughers: 11 of their games have been ties or one-goal decisions (either way).

@ Belmont Hill 4, St. Sebastian’s 1 – A second period goal by junior D Danny Kelly was the difference for Bel Hill today, breaking a 1-1 tie. The hosts added a pair of empty-netters in the final couple of minutes of play. Ranked #3, the Hillies are now 19-2-1 in NEPSIHA play, and winners of nine straight. The Arrows drop to 12-8-1.

@ Canterbury 4, Trinity-Pawling 3 – PG Anthony Langevin gave Canterbury a 4-2 lead midway through the third. T-P came back and made things interesting on a RJ Bishop goal with a little over six minutes remaining in regulation, but couldn’t get the equalizer. Saints senior goalie Austin Essery kicked out 28 shots for the win.

Middlesex 8 @ Roxbury Latin 1 – Senior AJ Lucchese and junior Justin Ferreira each had hat tricks, and senior Chris Jellison had two goals.  With the win, Middlesex improves to 10-5-3 on the season.

@ BB&N 6, Groton 0 – Senior D Connor Hegarty notched two power play goals and added an assist. and junior goalie Steven Grinsztein stopped all 17 shots he faced. BB&N improves to 13-6-2 on the season.

@ Loomis 4, Deerfield 2 – Senior D Max Harrington had a pair of power play goals and senior goaltender Danny Tirone kicked out 35 of 37 shots to lift the Pelicans to 12-7-1 on the season. Deerfield drops to the .500 mark (8-8-2) in NEPSIHA play.

Thayer 3 @ Lawrence 2 – Junior Rob McGovern kicked out 42 shots and Thayer got goals from three different scorers. LA outshot the Tigers, 44-25. With the win, Thayer moves a game over .500 (9-7-2).

@ Nobles 2, Governor’s 1 (OT) – An OT goal from freshman Colin White lifted Nobles to the home win. Earlier, Nathan Ferriero’s second period power play goal had given Governor’s a 1-0 lead, which held up until the final minute of play, when senior D Tyler Wood tied the game up for host Nobles.
