Belmont Hill Jamboree

Belmont, Mass. -- We've already covered three of the five teams at the Belmont Hill Jamboree, i.e. Belmont Hill, St. Andrew's College, and Proctor.

So we're going to concentrate on Winchendon and St. Mark's today.

Winchendon, which beat Belmont Hill 3-0 and tied St. Andrew's College 3-3 in Saturday's scrimmages, is much improved. Their top line of Matt Fawcett, Ben Thomas, and John Mulera -- all small, but skilled -- will be one of the better lines in prep hockey this winter.

Here are the players who stood out for us:

Winchendon

#22 John Mulera, RW -- Providence College recruit, who played for the Skipjacks U16 Team last year, is making the jump to prep hockey. A tenth grader, and a '99, he's a smart player, skilled, and a good skater. Needs to work on his game away from the puck. Similar in style to Patrick Harper, though not as dynamic. 5-7, 135 lbs.

#9 Ben Thomas, RC -- Top returning forward for Winchendon. A sophomore, he's the top line's catalyst. Makes plays. Pushes the pace. Has good hockey sense. Moves puck quickly with hard tape-to-tape passes. Was one of the standouts on the Cape Cod Whalers U16 Team going to Nationals. 5'9", 157 lbs.

#8 Matt Fawcett, LW -- 5'6", 135 lb. winger, a '99, is a transfer from Moses Brown where he was the leading scorer as a freshman with 30 points in 25 games. Fawcett is not a great skater, but makes up for it with his shiftiness. Competed hard, made plays, and worked.

#18 Sam Rand, RD -- 5'10", 155 lbs. defenseman skates well, and defends well with an active stick. Good size for an '00. Looked very much at home, like he'd been playing prep hockey for a year or two. Played last winter for Junior Bruins 16U team.

#19 Ivan Zhuravlev, RD -- 5'11", 165 lb. '96-born defenseman from Russia is a big, strong physical kid who defends well. Played a physical role on the back end. Senior is a returnee from last year's team.

#31 Brandon Graf, G -- 5'11" New Jersey native came up with some big saves against St. Andrew's College, allowing his team to emerge with a 3-3 tie. Junior split time in Winchendon net last season.

St. Mark's

#2 Henry Thrun, LD -- We expect Thrun, an '01 from the Minuteman Flames, to be one of the elite defenders in prep hockey in short order. He's got it all. He's savvy, smart, patient, can skate, and has good hands.

#17 Zach Tsekos, LC -- Sacred Heart recruit was St. Mark's leading scorer last season. 5'10", 165 lb. senior from Montreal is a late '96, so has experience and has proven himself as one of prep hockey's top forwards. Very slippery, excellent stick, dangerous down low. Has a real nose for the net. Had 58 points as a 10th grader, ,and 54 points last year.

#25 Peter Housakos, RD -- 6'3", 187 lb. late '96 defender from Montreal is a bit of a rover out there, covering a lot of ice surface. He has excellent size, is strong on pucks. Had a 14-22-36 line in 29 games last season.

Notes:

St. Mark's goaltender Ryan Ferland, crucial to the Lions' hopes to replicate last season's success, did not play, as he is out with an ankle injury.

We liked St. Andrew's junior LW Regan Kimens, a '99, more today than on Friday. Kimens is not a great skater, but at 6'0", 175 lbs. showed potential as a Div. I power forward.

***
Back in Cambridge
We stopped in at BB&N to see the Knights scrimmage Roxbury Latin. Both teams had merely three practices under their belt, and were in tryout mode. Roxbury Latin didn't have numbers on their jerseys, which didn't make things easy.

From what we saw today, both teams are solid defensively but lack offensive flair. The game was 2-2 after two periods. The third was played exclusively as special teams and the final score was 3-3.

We liked the play of BB&N senior goalie Sihak Lee. With South Korea hosting the next winter Olympics, they'll be icing an Olympic team and Lee, a late '97, is expected to get the nod in net. Facing NHL shooters might be... an experience. Lee is being recruited by Williams but may be deferring a year for the opportunity to play in the Olympics.

Roxbury Latin goaltender Bryan McGrath, a '98 junior who played every second for RL last season, played the first and third periods on Saturday, and was solid, though not tested much.

We liked some of BB&N's young players, like 9th grade RD Max McKay, who played at St. Mary's of Lynn last winter. A smart, gritty player with a quick stick, he's coming off shoulder surgery.

Grade 10 RD Mike Bermingham, a 5'8", 180 lb. from the Junior Bruins, was solid. A '99, he should be even better when he sheds some of his baby fat.

Junior LD Joe Gilbert, a transfer from Framingham HS, was another solid blueliner. Good skater.

Cam Cokinos, a '00 9th grade d-man, is huge, raw, and doesn't quite have his feet under him, but could become something in time.

We've seen 10th grade RC Jack Studley play better, but he's another BB&N player to keep an eye on. He's a '99.

BB&N's most polished, experienced player today was senior RD Michael Bibbey, a '97. Bibbey tore his MCL last year and missed nearly two-thirds of the season, so has something to prove. He should make for a solid NESCAC player.

Roxbury Latin, which finished 14-8-2 last year, returns the core of their team.  The top d-men are late '99 sophomore -- and Providence recruit -- Michael Callahan, late '98 junior Max Alsarraf, '98 junior Joe Doherty.

Up front, the three leading scorers from last year are all back: '97 seniors Ronny Lestan and Max Ginsberg, and '00 sophomore Jimmy Duffy.

St. Andrew's Edges Belmont Hill, 4-3, in Scrimmage

Belmont, Mass. -- A 4x3 powerplay goal by St. Andrew's College defenseman Jacob Ledson late in the third period lifted his team to a 4-3 win in a scrimmage at Belmont Hill late this afternoon.

St. Andrew's, playing its twelfth game (8-4) of the young season, broke out to a 3-0 first period lead on goals by Morgan Barron, Kody Clark, and Reid Yochim. The game had all the earmarks of a blowout. But senior Christian Faggas, from behind the net, made a pass out front to Peter O'Connell to cut it to 3-1 at the first intermission.

In the second, Belmont Hill junior Jonathan Folsom scored a pair of goals 1:30 apart to lift Belmont Hill to a 3-3 tie, which is how things stayed until Ledson's game-winner.

"We were just OK," said St. Andrew's coach David Manning. "We were mentally soft, and we didn't execute the way we expect. We did just enough to win."

Belmont Hill coach Jeremiah McCarthy's team is still in the middle of tryouts and was missing four key players to injury in Brian Matthews, Christian O'Neill, and John Copeland, who should all be back next week; and Sam Hesler, who hopes to be back for the Lawrenceville Tournament.

Given all that, McCarthy was sanguine about today's result. "St. Andrew's is big, physical, and fast," he said, "and some of our boys have not had experience playing at that level. I was pleased to see them settle down and battle back to tie the game. I thought that was a real point of pride. For me, it was exciting to see."

Players that stood out for us:

Belmont Hill

#35 Connor Hopkins, G -- A youngster off the '00 Eagles came in midway through the second period, and kept his team in the game, only allowing one goal the rest of the way.

#10 Jonathan Folsom, F -- Scored the two goals in 1:30 that wiped out SAC's 3-1 lead. First goal was on a shot that broke off the glove of SAC senior goalie Cole Chapman. On the second he was left alone in the slot -- and took advantage of it, firing it high blocker-side. '98 birthdate, and a junior.

#4 Christian Faggas, RC -- Late '96 worked really hard, got in quickly on the forecheck, and was an all-around pest. Made a nice play on Bel Hill's first goal. Late '96 birthdate, and a senior.

#24 Ricky Cronin, RD -- Good skater stood out on the PP. A '97-born senior, Cronin showed poise and a good shot from the point. Drew a penalty that gave his team a late chance to tie it up.

#2 Eric Butte, RC -- Strong skater, played a strong game in all three zones. A senior, Butte is a '97 birthdate.

#25 David Giunta, RD -- Solid defensive defenseman. Could have been more physical. '97-born senior.

Belmont Hill suited up a couple of '00 defensemen worth following in Robert Radochia and James Perullo. Don't know if they will make the varsity this year, but we expect they will soon enough.

St. Andrew's College

#19 Corey Andonovski, RC -- Princeton recruit, a '99 junior, has size, skill, good hockey sense, and upside. Would like to see him take over the game more. He has the ability. Eligible for 2017 draft.

#20 Morgan Barron, LC -- 6'2" junior center from Halifax, NS,  a Dec. '98 birthdate, is a power forward with skating ability. Took the puck to the net, and finished his checks. Scored his team's first goal, just by driving to the net. Has pro upside. Is eligible for the 2017 draft.

#9 Mitchell Martan, LW -- 5'8" senior, a '98, was consistently noticeable. Strong skater kept his feet moving, made hard, accurate tape-to-tape passes, competed, finished checks, and pushed the pace.

#12 Conor Ali, LD -- 6'0" junior, a '99, wasn't too noticeable at first, but picked it up as the game moved along.  Good skater, good positioning on PP. Was a little shaky under pressure early on. Canada U17 invitee.

#15 Reid Yochim, LD -- 5'7", 180 lb. senior blueliner, a Princeton recruit, was confident handling the puck, has a good stick, and really good feet. He's short, but stocky and strong.

Exeter Trounces New Hampton, 8-1

Exeter, NH -- A Jakov Novak goal 25 seconds into the game gave the visitors from New Hampton an early 1-0 lead in Tuesday afternoon's game here, but that was all Exeter goaltender Joey Lazzaro would allow the rest of the way as host Exeter came out on top of an 8-1 decision.

Exeter freshman LW Garrett Foster scored a pair of goals, as did senior RC Devin Moore. Forwards Ben Solin and Ryan Petti each had two points, as did defensemen Trevor Cosgrove, Jacob Dupont, and Peter Christie.

Exeter outshot New Hampton, 49-22.

The first period was noteworthy for the fact that New Hampton was called for five penalties, and wound up on the PK for pretty much the entire period. Exeter put 20 shots on New Hampton senior goalie Jacob Burhans. The puck was seldom down at the other end; New Hampton put three shots on Lazzaro.

So...not a good hockey game. After Exeter scored four goals in a six-minute span late in the second, it was as good as over. This typist could have spent the third period writing a concerto for the fluegelhorn, shearing sheep, or playing Tetris... something, anything.

New Hampton lost a lot in the offseason. Their top five leading scorers departed, four having been graduated. Also, Arizona State recruit Robert Herrman, a sophomore last season, left to return to his native California were he plays for the Anaheim Jr. Ducks U16s. That hurts.

New Hampton's top line this year consists of 6'3" senior Jakov Novak, 5'10" junior Chris Lemay, and 5'9" senior Josh Pope-Ferguson.

Novak, a late '98 from Windsor, Ontario, is a power forward. Lemay took the top-line center spot that would have been Herrman's had he stayed. On the right side, Pope-Ferguson showed good hockey sense and puck skills.

Third line center Ty Turgeon injured his shoulder on a hit from Jordan Haney late in the first, so didn't really get a chance to show what he could do.

6'2" sophomore RD Michael Kesselring, an '00 and coach Casey Kesselring's son, is New Hampton's top prospect. He appears a little stronger and more filled out than last season.

The key for Exeter is the return of all six d-men from last year. Co-captains Cosgrove and Christie, as well as Dupont, Jordan Haney, Derrick Spencer, and Graham Rutledge. If that's not the best group of d in prep hockey, they're not far off.

Cosgrove, a Colgate recruit, had a strong game, and is the team's #1 blueliner. Haney, a late '96 senior from Sanford, Florida, looks like he could have a breakthrough year. He's big, he's strong, and he's a powerful skater.

Up front, there are a couple of freshmen you will want to keep your eyes on in Foster, mentioned above, and Hunter McCoy. Both are '00s. Foster is a 12/12/00 so, in the Exeter scheme of things, he's young. Actually, very young.

5'7" right-shot center Devin Moore was very good yesterday. He has an excellent stick, makes plays, and is a terrific DIII prospect. His skills are top shelf, but he is also small and gets muscled off the puck easily -- when a defender is able to line him up, that is.

5'10" senior Ben Solin was excellent. The NESCAC schools are totally onto him, and Div. I schools are starting to show interest. Solin is not a dynamic type, but the puck seems to follow him around. His offensive instincts are acute. Just a pure hockey player. We can see him succeeding on the Div. I level, provided he plays a year or more of juniors and is able to gain additional strength. A lot of offense flows through the senior from Madison, Conn., so look for opposing defenders to key on him. Yesterday, he played on a line centered by Moore, with Petti, a PG, on the other wing.

"Solin has talent coming out of his pores," Exeter head coach Dana Barbin said. "He's made a lot of improvement in a year. He competes all over the ice. He's a hound out there. He's hungry."

Teddy Hart was graduated from Exeter last spring and is at Yale. Exeter doesn't appear to have someone to fill his skates. By that we mean a forward who combines size, athleticism, and skating ability. That could hurt them against some of the bigger, stronger teams they'll be facing. In due time, we shall see.

Northeast Showcase Schedule

This, the schedule for the Northeast Showcase, just arrived yesterday. The tournament will be held at the Tilton School starting this Friday, Nov. 27th and will run through Sunday. Overflow games will be held at Plymouth State University in Plymouth, NH, which is 25 miles north, just off I-93.

Large School -- Small School Breakdown

Here is the Large School/Small School breakdown for the 2015-16 season. The schools in the left-hand column are large; the schools in the right-hand column are small. The numbers to the right of the school name indicate the number of male students in each school as of the start of the academic year.

2015-16 Small School-Large School Breakdown

Delbarton Hands Dexter 3-2 Loss

We got to see a second scrimmage involving Dexter today, as they bowed to the visitors from Delbarton, 3-2.

Delbarton, which had tied Berkshire 2-2 yesterday in Sheffield, Mass., was clearly the better team today.

Dexter came out sluggishly and trailed 2-1 at the end of the first. Delbarton extended their lead to 3-1 in the second, before Dexter got a PPG with 2:55 left in the third. The key to the game was the fact that Delbarton just made better decisions, better plays, and outworked their hosts. They are
well-coached, work hard, compete for pucks, backcheck, and finish their checks. The big sheet at Dexter didn’t faze them in the least. They seldom chased the game.

Last season, Steve Agriogianis (Penn State), who was a sophomore, and Anthony DelGaizo, who was a junior, were Delbarton’s two leading scorers. Both are now gone, to, respectively, the North Jersey Avalanche U16 and New Jersey Rockets (EHL).

That’s a lot of goals left on the table. Now, Delbarton will have to count more heavily on young players than they were perhaps expecting.

We thought the following players were key for Delbarton:

Junior goaltender Troy Kobryn (’99) -- Sound positioning, consistently square to shooters. Kept rebounds to a minimum. Stood strong in the crease when Dexter tried crashing the net.

Senior RD Andrew Petrillo (’98)  -- Delbarton's best defenseman, and the top player in today’s game. Petrillo played a lot of minutes. Vermont recruit is a good skater, wheels the net well, and protects the puck using his body. We liked the way he defended, keeping tight gaps, engaging physically.

5’10” sophomore LD Jalen Kaplan (’00) -- Paired with Petrillo, and played a lot. Defends well, has an active stick, and plays physically. Caught running around in the defensive zone and found himself out of position at times. Decision-making with the puck was okay, but not great. He has upside to his game. Moves the puck well and is tough. Is the younger brother of Salisbury senior forward Jordan Kaplan.

5’6” junior wing Mark Benemerito (’98) -- Undersized forward with good foot speed and a 200-foot game. Showed a strong awareness of where his teammates were on the ice, and did a nice job finding them with the puck. Worked hard, kept his feet moving, and can scoot.

5’9” freshman RC John Farinacci (’01) -- Strong centerman played the full length of the ice. Showed a good understanding of the game, and competes hard. Played with a little confidence and swagger. Our prior viewing was in an ’01 tournament a couple of months back when he was playing for the New Jersey Colonials. Stands out amongst his age group. And will soon stand out at this level.

6’0” freshman RC Jack Malone (’00) – Good sized, around the puck a lot. Has a powerful shot. Definitely caught our eye. We look forward to seeing him more.

For Dexter, we liked:

Senior D Ryan McDougall (’96) – Played a solid game. You get what you would expect from someone his age: he's steady on the back end, defends well, and has a physical presence. Not a great skater but gets where he needs to be and moves the puck well. Scored Dexter’s second -- and final -- goal, a wrist shot from the left point on the powerplay. A good Div. III prospect.

Senior wing Kevin Hock (late ‘96) -- Strong performance from Hock in this game. He played a solid two-way game and made Delbarton work for every inch of ice. Scored his team’s first goal. Competed for pucks in the dirty areas and finished his checks. The University of Maine was taking a look at him.

5’10” sophomore LD Jack Rathbone (’99) -- Not his greatest showing today, but he played a decent game. Took it upon himself to skate the puck up ice quite a bit. Uses his body to protect the puck well. Still gets caught trying to do too much at times. Needs to continue working on managing the risk in his game, though without unduly sacrificing offense.

5’11” junior RD Sean Keohan (‘99) – Was steady. Slows the play down with his patience and calmness. Makes crisp tape-to-tape passes with the puck and defends well.

6’2” senior wing Jack Donato (late ’97) – His skating isn’t the greatest, but he’s big and strong, a power forward who competed hard and moved the puck effectively. Has improved a lot since last year. (By the way, the Donato family was well represented today. Harvard forward Ryan Donato and his father, Ted, were among the spectators. Ted’s brother Dan was, of course, behind the Dexter bench. Skating for Dexter were Ted’s children Jack and Nolan, a sophomore forward. And their cousins, John and Anthony Farinacci, are forwards for Delbarton. Just a fun fact.)

Note: Delbarton will be back in Boston in four weeks for games against Malden Catholic (Dec 19th, 1:00 pm @ Merrimack) and Catholic Memorial (Dec. 20th, 2:00 pm @ BU).

Dexter Edges Proctor in Scrimmage

A pair of goals 18 seconds apart early in the third period lifted host Dexter to a 2-1 win over Proctor Academy before a surprisingly robust -- this was a scrimmage, mind you -- Friday night crowd.

Both Dexter goals were of the flukey variety. On the first, with Dexter shorthanded, the puck deflected off the referee's skate along the far wall and deflected out to Patrick Daly in center ice. Daly broke in alone on Proctor senior goaltender Connor Simpson, who made the original save. The loose puck seemed harmless enough but somehow or another got banged around or deflected back toward the net and slipped in behind Simpson. Daly was credited with the goal, tying the game at 1-1.

Just 18 seconds later, Dexter sophomore center Jay O'Brien, well-covered at the near half-wall, flung a shot on net that linemate Jack Donato tipped past Simpson.

Other than those two goals, Simpson was flawless. He came up with a particulary great save on a Kevin Hock power play attempt. Dexter got strong goaltending, too. Junior Aidan Murphy, a transfer from Xaverian, posted a shutout first period. Sophomore CJ McKennitt, who played the second and third periods, came up with a couple of great stops. The only goal McKennitt allowed was on a penalty shot by Tate Singleton at 8:05 of the second.

Digression: Coincidentally enough, the official who called the penalty shot, Marino, was the same official who, in the Small School semifinal last March 7th, awarded a penalty shot to Proctor's opponent, St. Mark's, with 1.8 seconds remaining in a 4-4 game. St. Mark's forward Derek Osik cashed in and St. Mark's advanced, winning the title the next day with a 3-1 win over Westminster. We were able to view some conclusive video shortly after that game, and the call, in this observer's eyes, was a bad one, as the ref raised his arm prematurely. The play had not concluded. The shooter, who would actually get a shot off,  was hooked, certainly. But he was not "deprived of a reasonable scoring opportunity." None of this is to take anything away from St. Mark's. They were worthy champions last year. It is some kind of coincidence though, that Proctor's first goal of the new season (granted it was a scrimmage) came on a penalty shot. Just like the last goal against them last season. And the same official.

Anyway, back to the matter at hand: tonight's game.

Dexter's offense has a much different look without Ryan Donato. Dexter's top two players tonight were sophomore forward O'Brien (Providence) and sophomore defenseman Jack Rathbone (Harvard). It's asking a lot of young players, but they are going to have to lead the charge.

Dexter sophomore forward Jack Nisbet, a transfer from BC High, was given a major and a game misconduct for a hit to the head of Proctor's Jake Pappalardo with about five minutes left in the first period.

Prior to that, Dexter's lines had been John Femia (50 pts. at Canton HS last winter) with Daly and Hock on the top line. And Nisbet with O'Brien and Jack Donato on the second unit. Dexter coach Dan Donato said he views them more as a 1 and 1A lines, and will be looking to find scoring depth in the third and fourth lines.

Proctor's most interesting newcomers are sophomore winger Ryan King, who played last year for Bishop Hendricken. He's the son of Steve King, who played at Hendricken, Brown University, and in the NHL. King was also recently named the new head coach at Moses Brown.

We also liked Patrick Cotton, a '99 soph from Stockholm, Sweden. He's a good-sized power forward. His older brother, Eric, a junior, is also on the team. Both, by the way, played football on the Proctor varsity this fall. That, to us, is cultural assimilation personified.

Much like last year, the Hornets' two top players are junior RD Reilly Walsh (Harvard) and senior center Pappalardo (Maine). The supporting cast is a bit deeper this year, however.

Pappalardo, who was stitched up after taking the hit to the head, was not his high-flying self afterwards.

Dexter's O'Brien took a hit to the head in the waning seconds of the game. However, he escaped a concussion and will be in the lineup Sunday morning when Dexter hosts Delbarton in a 10:00 am scrimmage.

Dexter senior defenseman Ryan McDougall was credited with 12 blocked shots.

Welcome to 2015-16

The 2015-16 Prep Pages are now officially open.

All of last season’s news, rosters, schedules, and stats have been archived, and new material will start going into this season’s pages immediately, as coaches begin to upload their team’s schedules.

We want to remind new readers of a couple of new features we introduced last season. Players’ career prep statistics, for one. If you click on a player’s name on the roster you will see his final stats for all the seasons he has played prep hockey and, of course, running totals for the current season. If you click on the year, say 2014-15, it will show a player's game-by-game statistics.

It is also possible to download rosters, schedules, and all statistics pages in PDF form, which has the added benefit of giving pages a cleaner look when printed out.

Pretty much all columns are sortable. Just click on the top. This is useful for, among other things, separating scoring and goaltending leaders by school, birth year, position, points, etc.

We’ve also done a lot of work on the back end, mainly behind-the-scenes stuff that you probably won’t notice beyond the fact that the site will be running more smoothly than ever.

Once we have a reasonable number of schedules posted, we will begin to keep you updated on which of them are actually up, so you won’t have to waste your time looking for those that have yet to be uploaded.

We will also be posting jamboree and holiday tournament schedules. Look for those to start going up over the coming week as well. Note to coaches: send 'em along, please.

We are also accepting advertising for the upcoming season. Please write information(at)ushr.com for rates.

Of course, we will have the news coverage you have come to expect.

Welcome to the new season. We're glad to be here. We’re glad you’re here. And, as always, we thank you for your support.
