Break Out the Mukluks

It's crouched like a puma off the Mid-Atlantic coast, bombogenising its way to the Northeast, and just looking for ways to mess with the winter sports schedule. Here at USHR, scheduling is a serious business. To ensure accuracy in the standings, we need to account for every single NEPSIHA game. For that, we rely on the community: coaches, friends, and the kindness of others. Send us what you have. We'll update as information comes in. Please email info to news@ushr.com  Thank you!

Prep Highlights: Wed. Jan. 26th, 2022

@ Tilton 6, New Hampton 4 -- Senior D Noah Leithman's PPG at 15:15 of the second proved to be the game-winner. Senior F Nick Brennan (2g,2a) had a big day, and Leo Piandes had four assists to give him 24 on the season, which puts him second overall in prep hockey, trailing only KUA's Tyler Wishart. Piandes leads prep hockey in GPG with 2.33. Shots were 40-40.

@ Portsmouth Abbey 3, St. George's 2 -- The Ravens got late-third-period goals from sophomore Chris Hahn and junior Joe Vanderbur to win their sixth straight, knocking off a solid St. George's squad in the Battle for Aquidneck Island. Abbey senior Rorke Applebee (36/38) earned the win; sophomore Matthew DellaRusso (38/41) took the loss.

@ Pomfret 8, Hoosac 0 -- Senior Declan Chapman had two goals and six other players had singletons as Pomfret improved to 9-4-1. Senior G Kellen Beauton (16/16) and soph Zach Bloxam (9/9) shared the shutout.

Berkshire 5 @ Hotchkiss 1 -- Senior Ben Boren (2g,1a) and junior Tanner Marsh (3a) led the Berkshire attack, and junior G Danick Leroux kept Hotchkiss at bay.

Avon 4 @ Loomis 2 -- Four different Winged Beavers scored goals, Nick Capasso had two assists, and Conor Callaghan (28/30) earned the win in net. For Loomis, both goals were scored by sophomore D Drew Anastasio. Junior Will Reardon picked up an assist on both of them. #2 Avon is 14-1-0. Loomis falls to 7-7-0.

@ Salisbury 8, Gunn 0 -- Senior Dylan Hryckowian had two goals, and six of his teammates had one apiece to lead #8 Salisbury's attack. Senior G Austin McNicholas (23/23) earned the shutout. Salisbury, now 11-4-0, had a 42-23 edge in shots.

@ Cushing 3, NMH 3 (OT) -- #5 Cushing held a 3-0 lead early in the third, but the Hoggers fought back to tie it on goals from senior forwards Jack Alecia (2) and Nicholas LeClaire. Cushing senior Colin Ronan (36/39) and NMH junior Mason Rosado (31/34) were strong in net. Cushing is 9-1-3 in NEPSIHA play; NMH is 8-4-2.

Governor's 2 @ Lawrence Academy 2 (OT) -- Junior F Daniel Markevych scored both LA goals, sandwiched around Gov's pair in the second, from senior F Ian Olenick and junior D Jack Farrell. Soph Cam Russo assisted on both of Gov's goals. Gov's senior David Palandjian kicked out 40 of 42 shots in net.

Groton 3 @ BB&N 2 -- Freshman Angus Frew's third-period goal -- assisted by senior Max Noll, lifted the Zebras to their first win of the season. The goal was the first of Frew's prep career.

South Kent U18 5 @ Brunswick 4 -- In a non-NEPSIHA game, South Kent's U18 team edged #6 Brunswick in OT.

Holderness 6 @ Brewster 2 -- A balanced attack -- six goals, six different scorers -- and a four-goal second period produced another win for #9 Holderness, now 13-1-1. In net, junior Evan Plunkett (29/31) picked up the win. Holderness outshot Brewster, 41-31.

Proctor 5 @ Vermont Academy 3 -- After VA tied it up early in the third, Proctor sophomore Avan Pyle's second goal of the game broke the tie. Proctor added an empty-netter for the final margin of victory. Proctor senior G Donald McCarthy (20/23) earned the win; Vermont's Tommy Martin (41/45) handled a lot of shots, but came up on the short end. VA's top scorers were Liam Lucas (3a) and Luke Dube (2g).

@ Andover 5, Winchendon 2 -- Andover broke a 2-2 tie with three third-period goals, from Nolan Roche, Sam Myles, and Jonathan Surrette, to improve to 10-6-0.

@ Millbrook 8, Williston Northampton 3 -- Millbrook blew this one open with a five-goal third period. All of Millbrook's goals came from different scorers; ditto for Williston. (We're see a lot of that tonight.) Jake Hugessen (22/25) picked up the win. Millbrook had a 45-25 edge in shots.

Nobles 3 @ St. Sebastian's 2 (OT) -- After a Colin Norton one-timer with 2:44 left in the third tied the game at 2-2, junior Ben MacDonald's OT goal -- his second goal of the game -- gave Nobles, which had lost four straight coming in, a desperately-needed win. The game was 1-1 through the first two periods and well into the third, as MacDonald's first goal, in the first period, was matched by Seb's, which got a goal from sophomore Colin Gorman.  That was it, until freshman Teddy Mutryn's tough-angle shot gave the Arrows a 2-1 lead with 5:29 left in regulation. Goaltenders were Thatcher Bernstein and Ryan Kazmouz. We don't have shots and saves yet. The Arrows, ranked #4, fall to 10-3-1; Nobles is 9-4-1.

@ Canterbury 4, Albany Academy 1 -- Senior F Cole Heintz had two goals, including an empty-netter, to pace the Canterbury attack and bring the Saints back to the .500 mark (5-5-3). Senior G Dan Gerts (33/34) picked up the win. AA junior Will Mizenko (38/41) took the loss.

Kimball Union 3 @ Exeter 1 -- KUA senior F  Will Blackburn's goal with 2:26 remaining in regulation lifted the #3 Wildcats to the win. Assists went to seniors Alex Keller and Kareem Alazem. Alazem added an empty-netter in the final minute. KUA's Jaiden Moriello and Exeter's Kurt Gurkan traded goals in the second period to account for the rest of the scoring. Alazem (1g,2a) had a hand in all three of KUA's goals. Blackburn had an assist to go with his GWG. Goaltenders were juniors Dan Heroux for KUA, and Michael Salvatore (33/33) for Exeter. With the win, KUA goes to 17-1-1. Exeter is 8-4-2.

@ St. Paul's 1, Milton 0 -- Host SPS was outshot, 38-19, but came away with the 1-0 win on junior Bryce Terry's second period goal. Sam Sibold and Matt Grady picked up assists on the goal. Senior Callum Welch (38/38) was a standout in net for SPS. Milton senior G Jake Cardonick (18/19) took the tough loss. SPS put a halt to its four-game losing streak. Milton has lost four of its last five and drops to 6-6-1.

Belmont Hill Remains #1 in USHR Prep Poll

This week's prep poll is up, and, as February's stretch run looms, Belmont Hill (10-0-2) holds onto the top spot.

There are two new teams in the poll, which of course means there are two teams that have dropped out.

Apologies for posting this so late in the evening. Your faithful correspondent found himself lost down the bunny hole of statistical research and fact-checking.

So here it is:

USHR Prep Poll, Week of January 24, 2022

Prep Highlights: Saturday, January 22, 2022

Grier En Fuego
Dragons Prevail in Lions' Den
A Rarity at Berkshire
Cushing's Irving Posts 4th Shutout

@ Portsmouth Abbey 6, Roxbury Latin 1 -- Junior F Michael Patko notched two goals and added an assist, and senior G Ryan Rosenau stopped 26 shots to lead Portsmouth Abbey to its fifth consecutive win. Shots were lopsided, 62-27. Roxbury Latin sophomore goalie Evan Zhang (56/62) could have used more help.

@ Taft 3, Canterbury 3 -- The Rhinos and the Saints got all their goals from different players. Goalies were senior Dan Gerts (33/36) for Canterbury, and sophomore Rudy Guimond (21/24) for Taft. It was Guidmond's second start.

@ Lawrenceville 6, Albany Academy 4 -- Albany Academy held a 4-3 lead entering the third period, but gave up three unanswered goals, the last an empty-netter. L'ville got hat tricks from both junior Eric Vivinetto and senior Justin Solovey to account for their six goals.

Avon Old Farms 5 @ Berkshire 2 -- The #3-ranked Winged Beavers got first-period goals from junior Joe Odyniec (his first), senior Matt DiMarsico, and PG Brendan Fennell and never looked back. With under two minutes to go in the third, and trailing 4-2, Berkshire pulled junior G Danick Leroux (24/28) for the extra attacker. Berkshire gained puck possession after a faceoff, and sent it back to their offensive blue line, but no one was there, and the puck kept on its little journey, traveling the length of the ice -- and into the empty net. Avon senior defenseman Sam Court, who had battled for the puck off the faceoff and was thus the last player to touch it, was credited with the goal. One could watch a thousand games and never see that once. PG goaltender Conor Callaghan (18/20) got the win for Avon, now 12-1-0.

@ St. Sebastian's 2, Governor's 1 -- Senior Jayden Grier scored both of the Arrows' goals. Grier, who's been on a scoring tear, with 7 goals over his last three games, scored even-strength goals in each of the first two periods. Gov's junior D Jack Farrell's PPG in the second brought the visitors within one, but they could get no closer. Seb's senior goalie Matthew Choi (21/22) earned the win; Gov's junior Max Lacroix (21/23) took the loss. The #4-ranked Arrows are undefeated over their last six (5-0-1), and are now 10-2-1 on the season.

St. George's 5 @ St. Mark's 3 -- Lions vs. Dragons. A battle between the top two teams in the Eberhart Division. St. Mark's coming off a tough loss to Belmont Hill on a buzzer-beater Wednesday. St. George's coming with a four-game win streak. They would stretch it five.

Here's how it happened: After St. Mark's senior Dom Murphy's first period rebound goal gave his team a lead they they took to the first intermission, St. George's came out hard in the second, tying the game at 1-1 just a few minutes in on a Ben Buckley goal off a nice headmanned pass from D Jake McIntosh. At 10:12, LW Matt Kursonis finished off a nice pass from his center, Ben Buckley. A few minutes later, a Ryan Buckley shot from the point was deflected home by Donovan Frias. That was it for the period: 3 unanswered goals. The Dragons owned the period.

In the third, St. Mark's responded quickly, as senior F Peter Maro deflected home D Maddox Lizotte's shot from the point to cut the Dragons lead to one. St. Mark's would tie it up at 3-3 midway through the period, on a Michael Fisher point shot redirected by Dom Murphy. But that's where the St. Mark's surge ended. Just a minute or so later, a turn-around shot from the high slot by St. George's first line center Julian Frias eluded St. Mark's goaltender Charles Watson, who felt he'd been tripped. The bottom line: St. George's was back in front. The dagger came less than a minute later, as Kursonis scored his second of the day, a tough-angle, bar-down shot that put a ringing exclamation point on the win.

To sum things up, the top players for St. George's all came through: Matt Kursonis (2g,1a), Ben Buckley (1g,2a), Ryan Buckley (2a) and Jack Almeida (2a) along with the twins, Donovan and Julian Frias, both of whom notched a goal. St. Mark's got two goals from Dom Murphy and one from Peter Maro. Freshman F Richard Gallant and senior D Michael Fisher each had two assists. St. George's 6'2" sophomore goaltender Ryder Shea (22/25) earned the win in net; St. Mark's senior Charles Watson (30/35) took the loss. The teams will meet again Wed. Feb. 23rd at St. George's.

@ Rivers 7, BB&N 1 -- Rivers spread out its scoring, with seven players finding the twine. Rivers' sophomore G Jason Delehoy, in his first full game, stopped 14 shots for the win. Rivers improves to 5-5-1. BB&N falls to 2-9-0.

@ New Hampton 4, Brewster 4 -- New Hampton senior Evan Moore scored two goals; Brewster junior Dalton Kane did likewise. Junior Scott Lagos (1g,1a) had two points for New Hampton. Junior F Doyle Coughlin and senior D Grady Pierce each picked up two assists for Brewster. New Hampton outshot Brewster, 33-21.

@ NMH 5, Hebron 1 -- Seniors Nicholas LeClaire (2g) and Brock James (1g,1a), and junior Frankie Hipp (2a) -- each had 2 points to lead the NMH attack. Oliver Morris and Robbie Kenyon also scored for the Hoggers. Senior Nick Bevilacqua (23/24) earned the win in net. NMH improves to 7-4-1; Hebron drops to 7-4-0.

Middlesex 2 @ Groton 1 -- Middlesex, down 1-0 after the first, scored two second-period goals, from soph Tedy O'Keefe, and, on the PP, Joe Calo. O'Keefe, a sophomore, and Calo, a senior, also assisted on each other's goals. Senior Ned Crozier (20/21) earned the win in net. Senior Jack Ehrgott scored Groton's lone goal.

Cushing 4 @ Loomis 0 -- Junior forwards Linas Dedinas (1g,2a) and Zach Rizzo (1g,1a) led the Penguiins' scorers, and senior G Jackson Irving posted a 25-save shutout. The shutout was the fourth of the season for Irving (1.37, .944). Soph Landon Resendes and junior Nikita Belik each added a goal. With the win, #4-ranked Cushing improves to 9-1-2. Loomis, 7-6-0 on the season, has lost three straight.

Berwick 6 @ Bridgton Academy 3 -- Senior Nick McSorley (3g,1a) and sophomore Justin Maasa (2g,2a) led the Berwick offense. Liam Martin, Josh Felton, and Asa Forbes each added two helpers. Senior goaltender Jared Swisher (27/30) picked up the win.

Middlesex 6 @ Roxbury Latin 5 (OT) -- This was a 3-3 game in the third period and up for grabs. Then things got crazy. Middlesex struck first, getting a pair of goals a couple of minutes apart to go up, 5-3, with 5:07 left in regulation. But a few minutes later, with time dwindling to under 3 minutes, RL's Connor Berg had a moment, notching 2 goals, with the second coming with the goalie pulled and 35 seconds left in regulation. Just like that, they're tied up again, and headed to OT. Just 27 seconds in, Middlesex soph Tedy O'Keefe scored with an assist going to Bryan Tang. Undefeated Belmont Hill #1 in USHR Poll

Due to the near-total wipeout of New Year's tournaments as well as the first week back at school, we've held back on doing a weekly poll until enough games had been played to warrant one. Now, we're back with the first poll since the conclusion of the Christmas tournaments.

Spoiler alert: We have a team making a debut in the USHR poll. And we're talking first-ever appearance. Welcome, Holderness!

Fennell, Avon Flip the Script on Kent
Gallant Pots GWG in St. Mark's Win
Exeter Edges Andover
Worcester Wins on OT Penalty Shot

@ Avon Old Farms 2, Kent 1 --
Avon flipped the script on Kent, which had defeated the Winged Beavers by the same 2-1 score in the championship game of the Avon Tournament on Dec. 18. This time around, a 0-0 second-period deadlock was broken up by Avon senior Nikita Nikora, with an assist from Brendan Fennell. But Kent got it back on a PPG by senior captain Dante Palombo. In the third, Fennell scored the game-winner at 6:03, with assists from Matt DiMarsico and Charles Blanchard. Fennell, a PG and three-sport athlete out of Melrose (Mass.) HS, certainly picked his spots today. Both goalies, Avon's Conor Callaghan and Kent's Aidan Hopewell, stopped 24 shots. Avon is now 10-1-0; Kent is 8-5-0. This was Kent's seventh one-goal game of the season.

BB&N 5 @ NYA 3 -- BB&N never trailed in this one, though NYA made it interesting in the third, cutting the visitors lead to one before BB&N added an empty-netter late. For BB&N (1-7-0), it was their first win of the season. Senior D Henry Grabowski, a team captain, picked up his first two career goals, and junior G David Mallio (32/35) picked up the win. Cooper St. Hilaire notched a pair of goals for NYA, now 5-5-1 in NEPSIHA play.

@ Deerfield 5, Trinity-Pawling 3 -- The Big Green (2-8-0) scored three third-period goals to end an eight-game losing streak. Soph Jesse Allecia (1g,2a) led Deerfield scorers. PG Jake Fillion (22/25) picked up the win in net. T-P, which carried a three-game win streak into the game, falls to 4-6-0.

@ Salisbury 4, Westminster 2 -- Lee Parks (3a), Cole Eichler (1g,1a), and Liam Chapman (2a) led Scarlet Knights' scorers. Senior D Justin Chaput scored both of Westy's goals. Salisbury senior G Austin McNicholas (18/20) picked up the win; Westminster senior Jacob Osborne (40/44) took the loss. Salisbury improves to 7-4-0; Westy falls to 6-3-0.

@ Brunswick 4, Hill 2-- Dartmouth recruit Hank Cleaves and Yale recruit Eli Friedman each scored first-period goals and later added assists to lead Brunswick (9-3-0) to a sweep of Hill (3-3-2 vs. NEPSIHA opponents) in the back half of a home-and-home series. Junior G Brendan Holahan (30/32) earned the win; Hill junior G Ryan Sanborn (41/45) took the tough loss. (Sanborn, by the way, is the nephew of long-time Cushing Academy football coach, AD, and faculty member Wayne Sanborn.)

@ St. Mark's 3, Rivers 2 -- St. Mark's freshman scoring ace Richard Gallant broke a 2-2 deadlock with a goal at 13:21 of the third period, with assists going to Dom Murphy and Calvin Beard. Gallant (1g,2a) and junior Jim Lyver (2g) led the Lions' attack. Senior Ziv Deener-Chodirker (1g,1a) figured in both of Rivers' goals. St. Mark's junior G Charles Watson (23/25) earned the win; Rivers' senior Conor Sullivan (27/30) took the loss. St. Mark's improves to 8-1-1; Rivers falls to 4-4-1.

@ Exeter 3, Andover 2 -- PG Ryan Sordillo's goal at 14:14 of the third period lifted host Exeter to the win. Junior G Michael Salvatore (30/32) earned the win; Andover senior Shane Shelest (27/30) took the tough loss. Exeter, now 5-3-2, will again face Andover (8-5-0) in Part II of this ancient rivalry. That will be at Andover on Sat. Feb. 26, the final day of the regular season. Don't you dare miss it.

@ Tilton 6, Vermont Academy 3 -- The visitors from Vermont broke out to a 3-1 first-period lead on goals from senior Jack Pattison and junior Liam Lucas, who had two. All three of VA's goals were on the PP. But that was it. Tilton woke up, VA's sticks turned to dust and, over the next two periods, Tilton reeled off five unanswered goals to take the win. Seniors Leo Piandes (1g,3a), Kyle LoNigro (1g,3a), and Matthew Hale (1g,1a) led the Rams' attack. Tilton senior G Ryan Melia (9/12) took the win; Vermont PG Aidan Healey (46/51) absorbed a tough loss. Tilton improves to 5-4-0; VA falls to 2-9-1.

@ Williston Northampton 5, Berkshire 0 -- Junior Connor Hagness (2g,2a) figured in four of Williston's five goals and senior goaltender Ryan Hennigan stopped all 32 shots he faced to lead the Wildcats who, after starting the season 0-6 (albeit vs. strong opponents), have now won three of their last four.

St. Sebastian's 5 @ Tabor 1 -- Senior F Brendan Gorman (1g,2a), sophomore D Aidan Connors (1g,1a), and junior D Nolan Joyce (1g,1a) led the Arrows' attack, and senior G Ryan Kazmouz (26/27) did the rest. St. Seb's improves to 7-2-1; Tabor drops to 4-5-1.

Worcester Academy 4 @ Albany Academy 3 (OT) -- Worcester, trailing 3-1 on the road, reeled off  a pair of second-period goals -- from soph Jason Flaherty and senior Mike Locke -- to tie it at 3-3. After a scoreless third period, Worcester PG Nate Palumbo won it in dramatic form: a penalty shot in overtime. Junior G Ben Plotner (33/36) picked up the win. Worcester reaches the .500 mark at 5-5-0. Albany falls to 1-6-1.

Pomfret 5 @ Millbrook 0 -- Senior Matthew Spears (2g,2a) and junior Aidan D'Urso (1g,2a) came up big, and senior G Kellen Beauton posted a 15-save shutout. Millbrook was outshot, 28-15. Pomfret goes over the .500 mark at 6-4-0; Millbrook loses its third in a row and falls to 3-6-2.

Kimball Union 4 @ St. Paul's 1 -- Senior Jaiden Moriello (2g,2a), junior Jackson Kyrkostas (4a), and senior Tyler Wishart (1g,1a) led the Wildcats attack. Junior G Dan Heroux (17/18) picked up the win; St. Paul's senior G Callum Welch (45/49) came up big in a losing cause. KUA improves to 13-1-1; SPS falls to 2-8-1.

Portsmouth Abbey 4, Berwick 3 -- Junior Josh Bonrouhi (2g,1a) and senior Jacob Ierfino (1g,2a) paced the Abbey attack as the two teams traded goals throughout the game. That means the last one is the biggie, and today that came off the stick of junior Michael Patko, from senior Logan Furlong and freshman Matthew Burgner at 16:35 of the third. PA senior goalie Rorke Applebee (23/26) earned the win, and Berwick senior Jared Swisher (51/55) took a very tough loss. PA has won three in a row and improves to 7-4-0. Berwick falls to 0-10-0.

@ Pingree 2, Middlesex 0 -- Senior Michael Lynch, Pingree's leading scorer, scored both goals, and sophomore Ryan Kavanagh picked up assists on both. Senior G Matt Cusolito posted a 35-save shutout. Taking the loss was Middlesex senior Nate Crozier (30/32). Pingree improves to 4-8-1. Middlesex, with its sixth straight loss, falls to 2-7-1.

We're giving you the works here. In case you are wondering who's coming out of Flin Flon, Omsk, Linkoping, Minsk and other hockey outposts, there's plenty to dig through here.

Culver Comes Up Short, Again
T-P KO's Kent in OT
Giles Leads Brunswick
Andover-Tilton: No Defense Here
No Luck for the Big Green

@ Dexter 5, Culver 4
-- With 19.2 seconds remaining in regulation, Dexter LW Culin Wilson, with the final move of a nice tic-tac-toe sequence, put a deke on Culver G Vaughn Makar, neatly slipping the puck behind him for the game-winner.  The play had started at the right point, with senior D Matt Fusco sending the puck down to junior RW Grayson Badger, who sent it back to Fusco, who in turn set up Wilson for the game-winner. It was Wilson's second goal of the day, Fusco's third assist, and Badger's second assist.

A beautiful goal to end a game that, in the words of both coaches, Dan Donato and Kevin Patrick, was an "ugly" one. Culver had an edge in play at times; Dexter at other times. Basically, it was a fairly even game that just never got off the ground and took flight. A lot of whistles. A lot of penalties. Not a lot of flow. Both teams came off three games in three days at the True Hockey Prep Cup over the weekend, and were dragging a bit.

Culver winds up its four-game swing through New England with four losses, each a one-goal decision -- to the Gunn School, to Nichols, to KUA, and Dexter. Today, it looked like Culver's luck might change when they took a 3-1 lead early in the second,  but Dexter scored two. First, a Sean Keohane point shot deflected off Nick Larkin to make it a one-goal game. Then, 21 seconds later, a Wilson wide-angle shot found the back of the net to tie it at 3-3. But not for long. Culver took the lead right back when junior D Isaac Fecteau's point shot deflected off something or someone, allowing Culver to take a 4-3 lead into the final frame.

In the third, a Dexter SHG -- a Fitz Frechette tip of brother Mick's shot from the point -- tied it at 4-4, and minutes later Wilson scored the game-winner.

As Culver is an affiliate member, this counts as a win in the NEPSIHA standings. Next up, Dexter (8-3-2) hosts New Hampton on Saturday (3:45 pm).

@ Westminster 3, Taft 1
-- Senior Jacob Osborne had 24 saves, and Adam Mendelson, Vic Barakett, and Danny Judge each scored a goal to put Westy up 3-0 going into the third. Jackson Holl scored the Rhinos' lone goal. Taft senior G Mickey Roberts (32/35) took the loss.

@ Brewster 2, Kents Hill 1 -- Senior Jackson Matthews and soph Mason Meltzer scored for Brewster and junior G Patrick Green (22/23) earned the win in net. Kents Hill senior Justin Tremblay's goal in the third period kept things interesting. Brewster is now at .500 (5-5).

@ Winchendon 3, Pomfret 2 -- Winchendon got goals from Benito Calvanese, Brendan Coughlin, and Michael O'Malley to eke out a 3-2 home win over Pomfret. Wapitis senior G Matt Pierce (23/25) earned the win. Sophomore Zach Bloxam (29/32) took the tough loss.

Trinity-Pawling 5 @ Kent 4 (OT) -- Senior Tobias Iantorno's goal at 3:41 of OT, assisted by junior Lucas Buchanan, lifted T-P to the road win. Freshman G Gavin Geraghty (27/31) earned the win for T-P: Kent junior Harrison Fogel (17/22) took the loss. Kent senior captain Dante Palombo (1g,2a) was the game's top scorer. The scoring was spread around for both teams. No one had more than one goal. Today's game was the first OT of the season for T-P; for Kent, it was their fourth. The Lions fall to 2-2 in overtime, and 8-4-0 overall.

@ Brunswick 5, Millbrook 3 -- Soph Brendan Giles had two goals for host Brunswick and junior G Brendan Holahan (29/32) earned the win in goal. Brunswick had what looked like a comfortable 5-0 lead in the third, but Millbrook kept at it, cutting Brunswick's lead to two goals before running out of time. Priior to the game, a moment of silence was observed in memory of Teddy Balkind.

@ New Hampton 9, Proctor 3 -- Senior F Alex Moeller notched a hat trick, and Evan Moore and David Helledy each had 3 assists to pace New Hampton's attack, which put 50 shots on Proctor sophomore G Caden Pasqualone.

Portsmouth Abbey 3 @ Middlesex 2 (OT) -- A PPG from junior F Josh Bonrouhi lifted PA to the OT win, coincidentally their second in a row over Middlesex. (They met on the final day of the Barber Tournament.) Senior G Rorke Applebee (46/48) earned the win; Middlesex senior AJ Finta (30/33) took the loss. The Abbey is now 6-4-0. Consider that in '19-20 they went 2-21-1. Head coach Alley Skelley appears to have the program headed in the right direction.

@ Loomis 3, Deerfield 2 -- A third-period strike from Loomis senior F Oliver Flynn -- his second goal of the game -- lifted the host Pelicans to the win. Loomis improves to 7-3-0. Deerfield drops to 1-7-0. Today's loss was the seventh in a row for the Big Green. Four of those seven losses have been one-goal decisions. They could use a little puck luck.

@ Gunn 4, Albany Academy 0 -- Forwards Ryan Novo (1g,2a) and Julian Facchinelli (2g), and freshman D Luke Calabria (1g,1a) led the attack, and junior G Ryan Crowshaw (17/17) picked up the shutout. Gunn outshot AA, 42-17, and is now 9-4-0 in NEPSIHA play.

@ Canterbury 7, Choate 4 -- The big difference was the second period, when the host Saints busted open a 2-2 game, outscoring the Wild Boars by 3-0. Top scorers were Canterbury junior F Jed Brazzo (4g,1a) and senior center Patrick O'Shaughnessy (2g); and Choate junior Jake Kavanagh. Canterbury had a 41-31 edge in shots.

Andover 9 @ Tilton 7 -- Not much defense in this one. Jonathan Surrette (2g,3a), Connor Fitzpatrick (3g,1a), and Nick Royster (2g,2a) led the Andover attack. For Tilton, Matthew Hale (3g,1a), Leo Plandes (2g,2a), and Kyle LoNigro (1g,2a) were the top guns. Tilton outshot Andover, 49-32.

@ St. George's 4, Brooks 1 -- The host Dragons scored three second-period goals to take control of this one. Leading the scorers were three sophomores: Donovan Frias (2g,1a), Julian Frias (1g,1a), and Ben Buckley (2a). Another soph, G Ryder Shea (19/20) earned the win; Brooks senior Jake Inzirillo (32/35) took the loss. St, George's, winner of their last three, are now 6-2-1. Brooks falls to 4-4-2.

@ Salisbury 16, Hoosac 0 -- Senior F Connor Driscoll had four goals, Cole Eichler had two, and many of his teammates -- 10, to be precise -- had a single goal. Salisbury (6-4-0) now has 48 goals on the season -- and one-third of them were scored today. Hoosac is 1-6-1 on the season. Prior to today, the Owls worst loss of the season was a 6-0 decision to Avon Old Farms on Dec. 4.

@ Holderness 1, St. Paul's 1 -- SPS soph F Lino Viau scored in the second, and Holderness senior captain Nick Messina evened it up with a third-period PPG. But this one was really about the goalies: Holderness junior Evan Plunkett (26/27) and St. Paul's senior Callum Welch (43/44). Holderness is now 8-1-1, and Plunkett has a lot to with that.

@ NYA 5, Pingree 1 -- After spotting Pingree a 1-0 lead, NYA reeled off five unanswered goals. Senior Nathaniel Peretz (3g,1a) had his third hat trick of the season as the Panthers moved a game over .500 at 5-4-1.

St. Mark's 8 @ Roxbury Latin 0 -- Freshman Richard Gallant and soph Austin Borgaard each had two goals and Dom Murphy had four assists to lead St. Mark's to an 8-0 road win at Roxbury Latin. St. Mark's improves to 7-1-1.

Kimball Union 6 @ Vermont Academy 2 -- Jackson Kyrkostas (1g,2a) and Revelin Mack (2g) led the KUA attack. Junior D Billy Durand (1g,1a) figured in both Vermont goals. KUA, now 12-1-1 in NEPSIHA play, outshot VA, 55-24.

Prep Highlights: Sat. Jan. 8, 2022

Halliday Brothers Romp
Bel Hill, with a Tie, Remains Undefeated
NEPSIHA Teams Go 0-3 in True Prep Cup Action

Rivers 3 @ Governor's 1
-- A goal from Gov's senior F David Moriarty tied the game 1-1 early in the third. It must have awakened Rivers: halfway through the period the Red Wings notched a pair of goals 43 seconds apart, from junior D Luke Swaim (his first of the season) and Stephen Canavan, respectively. Senior Conor Sullivan (29/30) earned the win in the Rivers' net.

Avon 5 @ Taft 1 --  Avon busted open a 1-1 game with three straight second-period goals to take a commanding lead, one they would never relinquish. Leading the Winged Beavers' point-getters was senior D Sam Court, who had 3 assists. Goal scoring was balanced, coming from 5 different scorers. Senior Conor Callaghan (22/23) picked up the win. For Taft, senior Mikey Roberts (46/51) took the loss.

St. Paul's 8, Tilton 1 -- A big day for the Halliday brothers of Saugus, Calif. -- it's about 40 miles north of LA -- as sophomore F Josh Halliday (4g,2a) and senior F JT Halliday (2g,2a) figured in 7 of the 8 SPS goals, and combined for 10 points. Senior F Sam Sibold (2g,1a) and senior D Caid Cox (4a) were other big offensive contributors. Senior Callum Welch (23/24) earned the win in the SPS net.

St. Sebastian's 3, Belmont Hill 3 -- Seb's held a 3-1 lead after senior Brendan Gorman's goal at 10:06 of the second, but host Belmont Hill quickly answered, scoring a pair of goals within the next 3:32, from junior Daniel Markham and senior Jack Houser -- his second of the game --  to tie it at 3-3. There was no scoring in the third as Bel Hill sophomore goalie Sam Scopa (20/23) and Arrows' senior Ryan Kazmouz (28/31) barred the doors. Bel Hill remains undefeated at 5-0-2. Seb's is 6-2-1.

True Prep Cup
at the Icenter; Salem, NH:

St. Andrew's College 6, Kimball Union 3 -- Luke Devlin (2g,1a), and Fionn Keon (1g,2a) led St. Andrew's past KUA. St. Andrew's faces Nichols in Sunday's consolation game (10:35 am, Olympic Rink). KUA will face Culver -- both are winless here -- in the early game (9:15 am, NHL Rink).

Nichols 1, Culver 0 -- Nichols G Lawton Zacher kicked out all 33 shots he faced and Joseph Muldowney's PPG midway through the third was all the scoring Nichols needed. Culver G Vaughn Makar (28/29) took the tough loss.

Northwood 4, Dexter 0 -- Jan Korec posted a 24-save shutout, and Bill Zonnon had a pair of goals to lead Northwood. Dexter, which edged St. Andrew's, 6-5, in a shootout Friday night, will face Gunnery on Sunday (11:55 am, NHL). Northwood faces Mount St. Charles in the championship game (1:15 pm, Olympic).

Mount St. Charles 6, Gunn 4 -- Jason Stefanik (2g), Zachary Aben (2g), and Cam O'Neill (1g,2a) led the Mount past Gunn. Kyle Smith had a goal and an assist for Gunn. The Mount will face Northwood in Sunday's title game (1:15 pm, Olympic), while Gunn will face Dexter at 11:55 am (NHL).
